    In the ninth part of the series entitled “Beetles (Coleoptera) of the Rogów region” the next several families of the Scarabaeoidea superfamily is presented, as the better-known families of beetles occurring in the Rogów area. The faunistic data of the listed species is supplemented by bionomical information. 1 species of Bolboceratidae, 4 species of Geotrupidae, 3 species of Lucanidae, 4 species of Trogidae and 58 species of Scarabaeidae were recorded in the study area.

    This paper provides initial data on the fauna of coprophagus species related to moose feces. The research was performed in Kampinos National Park where the moose is the largest ungulate species. In the year 2016 we analyzed the material gathered in bait traps set in three habitats: meadow, heathland and mixed coniferous forest. 33 coprophagus species were collected. It appears that moose feces constitute the food source for a high number of coprophagus species representing three families: Geotrupidae, Hydrophilidae and Scarabaeidae. They are also an attractive microhabitat not only for common and numerous species but also those considered very rare in the European scale, such as: Limarus zenkeri, Planolinoides borealis, Nimbus contaminatus and Sigorus porcus.

    The catch rate and body length of Anoplotrupes stercorosus and Trypocopris vernalis were studied in 2018 on permanent plots established in 2003 in Scots pine stands left for spontaneous succession in the Piska Forest (N Poland). The plots comprised treatment A – severely disturbed stands (canopy cover of 10−30%), treatment B – moderately disturbed stands (canopy cover of 40−60%) and treatment C – the least disturbed stands in which all or nearly all trees survived (canopy cover of 70−90%). Each treatment class was replicated six times. In addition, we included a Scots pine plantation established in 2006 after the soil preparation as a stand in the earliest phase of succession. The following hypotheses were set: (1) severity of stand disturbance affects the body size of both species and (2) in the surviving remnants of stands (later phase of succession development) the body length of both species is greater than in disturbed stands and in the young plantation. No differences between the catch rate of both species in different treatments was detected (tab. 1 and 2). However we found significantly longer body of T. vernalis. The increase in the difference between the length of both species in the least disturbed stands as well as in the late stages of stand development was found (fig. 1 and 2). The direct effect of the LAI and inversely proportional effect of soil temperature on the catch rate and length of the body of A. stercorosus and, to a lesser extent, T. vernalis were observed (fig. 1). The high catch rate of A. stercorosus and the length of its body was linked with the soil covered only with forest litter (which occurs in dense stands with a high LAI index) (fig. 2). The catch rate of T. vernalis was correlated with the predominant nitrophilous Deschampsia fexuosa, which suggests the preferential occurrence of T. vernalis in ‘open’ stands with a high level of solar radiation. In turn, the length of T. vernalis body correlated with a high proportion of Calluna vulgaris, which may suggest a dependence of this parameter on light reaching the soil. The above observations indicate that in the production cycle of Scots pine stands, T. vernalis prefers open stands (especially clear−cuts, young plantations), while A. stercorosus is more often met in dense stands. The catch rate of both species is not suitable for zooindication research, while the length of their body is suitable. The higher the stage of ecological successive of the pine stand, the greater the difference in the body length of these species.

    The aim of the study was to analyse the changes in abundance and species composition of dung beetles (coprophagous Scarabaeoidea) inhabiting Scots pine stands in various stage of the development. Beetles were collected in baited traps in Człuchów Forest, Pomeranian Lake District (NW Paland). In total we collected 87,596 specimens representing 41 species (tab. 2). The structure of dung beetle communities inhabiting analysed Scots pine stands changes in the course of the forest developmental cycle. Lands adjoining to a forest, clear−cut areas and plantations are inhabited by heliophilous communities of dung beetles, with superdominant species Trypocopris vernalis and dominant species such as Anoplotrupes stercorosus, Aphodius pedellus, Euorodalus coenosus and Chilothorax distinctus (tab. 2, fig. 5a). Thicket stage, pole timber stage, and the mature stand are inhabited by umbrophilous dung beetle communities characteristic for pine stands, with superdominant species Anoplotrupes stercorosus and dominant species Trypocopris vernalis (tab. 2, fig. 5b). At thicket stage the number of dung beetles species is dramatically reduced in comparison to other developmental stages (fig. 3). Moreover, a fundamental change in species composition is observed.

    The objective of this study was to learn to what degree the afforestations affected the seasonal dynamics and changes in population abundance of Anoplotrupes stercorosus (Hartm.). The beetles were caught in traps in the Człuchowska Primeval Forest in 1998−1999. A total of 51 814 individuals of A. stercorosus were caught. The obtained results have shown that the peak activity of this beetle falls on June and September, and the optimal habitat conditions are poletimber and mature stands. A. stercorosus colonised coniferous stands growing on former agricultural lands more frequently than the same stands growing on forest lands.

    Opis:
    A study was conducted in May–August 2006 in the Golczewskie Uroczysko Nature Reserve, UTM WV06, using 10 Barber traps containing ethylene glycol. A total of 2,141 beetles were collected, belonging to 58 species from 7 families. The epigeic beetle fauna of the reserve comprised mainly forest, grassland and peatland species. Stable populations of three ground beetle species under partial protection, Carabus convexus, Carabus coriaceus and Carabus glabratus, are present in the forest habitats. The most ecologically valuable species include hygrophilous peatland species: Agonum ericeti (VU), Pterostichus rhaeticus, Agonum hypocrita, Limodromus krynickii, Oodes helopioides (VU), and the rare click beetle Paraphotistus impressus, all of which have poorly known ecological preferences.
    Badania były prowadzone w maju–sierpniu 2006 roku na terenie Rezerwatu przyrody „Golczewskie Uroczysko”, UTM WV06, za pomocą 10 pułapek ziemnych z glikolem etylenowym. Zebrano 2178 chrząszczy, należących do 71 gatunków z 15 rodzin. Fauna chrząszczy epigeicznych rezerwatu ukształtowana główne przez gatunki leśne, łąkowe i torfowiskowe, W siedliskach leśnych występują stabilne populacje 3 gatunków biegaczy objętych ochroną częściową: Carabus convexus, Carabus coriaceus oraz Carabus glabratus. Do najcenniejszych przyrodniczo można zaliczyć hygrofilne gatunki torfowiskowe: Agonum ericeti (VU), Pterostichus rhaeticus, Agonum hypocrita, Limodromus krynickii, Oodes helopioides (VU), oraz rzadki sprężyk Paraphotistus impressus ze słabo poznanymi preferencjami ekologicznymi.

    The research was conducted in the Człuchów Forest (NW Poland). Eight research plots representing early developmental stages (forest plantation and thicket stage) of Scots pine stands were established. Five traps baited with cow dung were set in each of the plots. In total, 24,811 specimens representing 34 species of dung beetles (coprophagous Scarabaeoidea) were collected. The structure of dung beetle communities inhabiting forest plantations and thicket stages of pine stands changes in the course of the vegetation season. The culmination of the process takes place in July, when a dramatic drop in the number of both individuals and species occurs. Dung beetle communities inhabiting forest plantations and thicket stages of pine stands are dominated by earth−boring dung beetles (Geotrupidae). The proportion of individuals representing Aphodiinae and Scarabaeinae dung beetles amounts to less than 40% of the total. Anoplotrupes stercorosus plays the role of the superdominant in those communities, and Trypocopris vernalis is a superdominant or dominant species. Two communities of dung beetle were differentiated, based on the season of adult activity: spring−autumn type (characterized by high species richness and the presence of Agrilinus ater, Calamasternus granarius, Chilothorax paykulli, Copris lunaris, Esymus merdarius, Heptaulacus testudinarius, Melinopterus sphacelatus, Nimbus contaminatus, Oxyomus sylvestris and Rhyssemus puncticollis) and spring−summer type (characterized by the lowest species richness and the presence of Bodilopsis rufa, B. sordida, Geotrupes spiniger, Limarus zenkeri, Othophorus haemorrhoidalis and Rhodaphodius foetens).

    In Poland, Anoplotrupes stercorosus (Scriba) and Trypocopris vernalis (L.), are very common throughout the whole country and belong to the most numerous representatives of the Geotrupidae family. Research on the habitat selectivity of Anoplotrupes stercorosus (Scriba) and Trypocopris vernalis (L.) was conducted in the years 2004-2006 in the Wipsowo Forest Inspectorate (Regional Forest Department in Olsztyn). The dung beetles were collected using Barber traps installed in a clear-cut comprising, 2, 3, 5, 8, and 16 year old thickets and tree-stands aged 30, 45, 60, 80, 100 and 135 years. According to phytosociology these tree-stands are a plant community of fresh continental pine forest (Peucedano-Pinetum), while typologically all sites are within the fresh coniferous forest. During the course of this research 29197 individual dung beetles were captured, including 23137 individuals of A. stercorosus and 6060 individuals of T. vernalis. Both species were caught at each research site. At nearly all sites A. stercorosus dominated. Only within the clear-cut area were the number of T. vernalis was higher than at other sites. Very many individuals of T. vernalis were present in the clear-cut area but their numbers decreased gradually with increasing tree-stand age. An opposite situation was noted for A. stercorosus. There was an interesting statistically-significant decrease in the abundance of both species in the middle-aged tree-stands – 30, 45 and 60-year-old. Analyzing the seasonal dynamics revealed one peak in the population of T. vernalis in July, whereas there were two peaks in the population of A. stercorosus: a small peak in July and a much larger peak in September. There was a significant negative correlation between the numbers of T. vernalis and tree-stand age (p<0.05, r =-0.57), and a significant positive correlation between the A. stercorosus population size and tree-stand age (p<0.05, r = 0.48).
