    The elements of symbiosis between a literary work and fable are clearly reflected in the structure of Herbert George Wells short story The Beautiful Suit that was published originally as A Moonlight Fable. The distinct allusion of the author about the title as well as the fact of two titles indicates similarity to folkloristic genre and gives posibility to perceive the story in two ways: literary work and fable. The typical semantics of folkloristic works is introduced by a number of constant formulas and motifs. They are conditioned by the function of moonlight topos that creates the opposition man – moon. The determining character of this antithesis implies the main division of the text and provides the paradigmatic sequence man – earth – mortal life versus moon – heaven – eternity that constitutes the fundamental element to model the basic relationships of the space and time structure. As well as in the sources of mythology and folklore the motif of the moon in the Wells’s short story introduces the aspect of duality of the depicted world, has an allegorical effect on the protagonist’s fate that touches the secret of existence and happiness.

    Plato may be best known as a philosopher, but his depictions of people’s involvements in religion are important for social scientists not only because of the transcultural and transhistorical resources that they offer those in the sociology of religion, but also because of their more general pragmatist contributions to the study of human group life. Thus, although Plato (a) exempts religion from a more thorough going dialectic analysis of the sort to which he subjects many other realms of human knowing and acting (e.g., truth, justice, courage, rhetoric), (b) explicitly articulates and encourages theological viewpoints in some of his texts, and (c) sometimes writes as though things can be known only as ideal types or pure forms in an afterlife existence, Plato also (d) engages a number of consequential pragmatist (also pluralist, secular) aspects of people’s experiences with religion. In developing his materials on religion, Plato rejects the (popular) notions of the Olympian gods described by Homer and Hesiod as mythical as well as sacrilegious. Still, it is instructive to be mindful of Plato’s notions of divinity when considering the more distinctively sociological matters he addresses (as in the problematics of promoting and maintaining religious viewpoints on both collective and individual levels and discussions of the interlinkages of religion, morality, and deviance). Still, each of the four texts introduced here assume significantly different emphases and those interested in the study of human group life should be prepared to adjust accordingly as they examine these statements. All four texts are consequential for a broader “sociology of religion,” but Timaeus and Phaedo are notably more theological in emphases whereas Republic and Laws provide more extended insight into religion as a humanly engaged realm of endeavor. The paper concludes with an abbreviated comparison of Plato’s notions of religion with Chicago- style symbolic interactionist (Mead 1934; Blumer 1969; Prus 1996; 1997; 1999; Prus and Grills 2003) approaches to the study of religion. Addressing some related matters, an epilogue briefly draws attention to some of the affinities of Emile Durkheim’s The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life with Plato’s analysis of religion.

    Wiersz George’a Herberta „The Sacrifice”, będący częścią cyklu The Temple, jest lamentacją cierpiącego Chrystusa, a jego bezpośrednim źródłem są lamentacje biblijne, które można zdefiniować jako zwrot do Boga o pomoc w niedoli. Poprzez zakorzenienie wiersza w tej tradycji, podkreślony zostaje ludzki wymiar cierpienia Chrystusa. Ponieważ Pasja wydaje się być kulminacją Wcielenia, odwołując się do post-fenomenologii Jean-Luca Mariona i Michela Henry’ego, postaram się przyjrzeć, jaka wizja Boga wyłania się z wiersza, w którym paradoks Wcielenia obecny jest już od pierwszej strofy: „Ten, który dał nam oczy, przyjmuje je po to, by odnaleźć zagubionego grzesznika”.

    Wiersz Virtue George’a Herberta – jednego z angielskich poetów metafizycznych XVII wieku – stawia przed tłumaczem liczne wyzwania, zwłaszcza formalne. Autor artykułu podejmuje się analizy czterech przekładów tego utworu na język polski, powstałych w XX lub XXI wieku – autorstwa Jerzego Pietrkiewicza, Jerzego S. Sity, Stanisława Barańczaka i Macieja Frońskiego. Wskazuje przekształcenia dokonane przez tłumaczy w stosunku do oryginału, próbuje określić ich wybrane przyczyny i konsekwencje. Bierze pod uwagę takie czynniki jak osobowość twórcza tłumaczy, obrane przez nich cele i strategie translatorskie. Wyniki tych analiz pozwalają ocenić, jak wyżej wymienione czynniki wpłynęły na ostateczne przedstawienie Cnoty polskojęzycznemu czytelnikowi.
    The poem Virtue by the metaphysical poet George Herbert is a challenge for its translators, especially in formal terms. The author of the article analyses four translations of this work into Polish, made in the 20th or 21st century – by Jerzy Pietrkiewicz, Jerzy S. Sito, Stanisław Barańczak and Maciej Froński. He enumerates the transformations made in relation to the original, determines their reasons and consequences, taking under consideration such factors as the translators’ creative personality, their aims and applied strategies. The results of these analyses allow to evaluate how these factors influenced the final depiction of Virtue available to Polish-language readers.

    In this paper, I discuss the invaluable role played by William Shaffir, my mentor and doctoral supervisor, who shaped my approach to interpretive fieldwork and deepened my understanding of symbolic interactionist theory. Known affectionately as Billy to his colleagues and students, Shaffir is a gifted educator and one of the finest ethnographic researchers of his generation. My focus is on how the scholarly tradition that flows from Georg Simmel through Robert Park, Herbert Blumer, and Everett C. Hughes, passed from Billy on to me, is illustrative of what Low and Bowden (2013) conceptualize as the Chicago School Diaspora. This concept does not refer to the scattering of a people, but rather to how key ideas and symbolic representations of key figures associated with the Chicago School have been taken up by those who themselves are not directly affiliated with the University of Chicago. In this regard, while not a key figure of the Chicago School himself, Shaffir stands at the boundary between the Chicago School of sociology and scholars with no official relationship to the School. As such he is a principal interpreter of the Chicago School Diaspora in Canadian Sociology.

Wśród przywoływanych stanowisk znajdziemy odniesienia m.in. do Kirke, Komosa i Prometeusza. Autor – posiłkując się metodami badawczymi Johna White’a oraz Marie Miguet-Ollagnier – wskazuje miejsca, w których najczęściej występują odniesienia do mitu o Dedalu i Dionizosie. Tym samym poszerza dotychczasowy stan badań o nowe wątki mitologiczne. W konkluzjach autor artykułu zwraca uwagę na potrzebę odczytania utworu Wellsa w kontekście funkcjonowania zauważonych przez niego odniesień mitologicznych w świecie przedstawionym powieści.

    This article puts forward a reinterpretation of the presence of mythological tropes in H. G. Wells's, “The Island of Doctor Moreau.” Once the various contexts within which the novel tends to be read have been presented, attention is drawn to the interpretative approaches adopted by literary critics, such as Bergonzi, Bowen, Hayes, to name but a few, who search for connections between the author's chosen text and myths. Among the cited interpretations, we will find references to, among others, Circe, Comus and Prometheus.  Availing himself of the research methodology adopted by John White and Marie Miguet-Ollagnier, the author identifies the sections where allusions to the myths pertaining to Daedalus and Dionysus are to be most frequently encountered. At the same time, the author expands on the findings of previous research by highlighting newly-found mythological motifs. In his conclusion, the author of this article highlights the need for Wells's work to be now read against the background of the mythological allusions which he has identified as being present in the world of this novel.

    The article is a review of the most important works by Herbert George Wells in terms of the relationship between futurological vision, projected ideal and knowledge about the past. Wells is usually associated with a prospective attitude, with forecasting the future and modeling its desired image. Indeed, his science fiction novels, treatises and utopias try to answer the question of the paths of civilization’s development. But this work is accompanied by constant analysis of the past, correcting the scenarios of past events and shaping their new version. On the one hand, the retroactive formation of historical matter supports a utopia with a socialist profile, and on the other, it prevents its stabilization and closes it in the circle of left-wing melancholy, as described by Enzo Traverso. Some of the writer’s progressive ideas seem to be patient self-persuasion, others – such as fantasies about “fortunate disasters” – can be understood as attempts to escape from melancholy. Breaking free from its power, however, comes at a high price: it is the end of the socialist utopia, the abandonment of the idea of progress and the optimistic history of philosophy.
