Sediments, carbon-datings on seashells, allow us to reconstruct the evolution of the average sea level for some 6000 years on the Taman Peninsula. The current sea level, regionally, appears to be the highest level ever reached on the peninsula. It seems that for the Anapa area and Tchouchtchka Spit area it is possible to propose a sea level curve characterised by a slow, continuous rising during the past 6000 years. On the Taman Peninsula itself, the sedimentary record of this slow ascent has been distorted by a heavy tectonic subsidence. We have identified this neo-tectonic subsidence effect on at least two areas on the peninsula. The south of the peninsula, Burgaz Spit and Vityazevos Lagoon, is the most affected area. The Taman Gulf is an intermediate area. The tectonic subsidence is particularly noticeable from 1500 to 500 BC, which we believe to have been misinterpreted until now, and to be at the origin of the notion of "Phanagorian Regression".

W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań terenowych i laboratoryjnych nad zjawiskami migracji archeologicznych zabytków krzemiennych po opuszczeniu stanowiska. Zjawiska te, zachodzące w większości stanowisk i obejmujące prawdopodobnie wszystkie rodzaje zabytków, są szczególnie dobrze widoczne w stanowiskach epoki kamienia ze względu na długi okres, który minął od ich opuszczenia przez człowieka. Umiejętność rozpoznania opisanych zjawisk w badanym stanowisku może decydować o poprawności rekonstrukcji faktów, które miały miejsce w przeszłości. W publikacji pokazano zjawiska migracji i grzęźnięcia zabytków krzemiennych na podstawie badań magdaleńskiego stanowiska w Dzierżysławiu i eksperymentalnych badań laboratoryjnych. Eksperymenty dotyczące zjawiska migracji zabytków potwierdziły różne tempo ich przemieszczania się. Zjawisko jest zależne od kształtu zabytków, ich ciężaru oraz środowiska, w jakim zabytki się znajdują. Małe i płaskie obiekty pogrążają się wolno, gdy tymczasem izometryczne i duże - szybciej. To wskazuje, że artefakty odkrywane w stanowiskach archeologicznych znajdują się w różnych stadiach migracji. Można także zauważyć, że migracja zabytków może być zróżnicowana nawet w obrębie jednego stanowiska archeologicznego.
This paper presents field and laboratory investigations concerning artefacts sinking in archaeological sites. These phenomena take place on most of archaeological sites. Most probably this process affect all categories of artefacts. Because of the time stone age sites are the best places to investigate sinking of artefacts. The correct interpretation of archaeological facts on the site could be based only on consciousness of the processes mentioned in this article. The particular example used here is Dzierżysław Magdalenian site and excavations on it as well as laboratory tests with "contemporaneous" flint flakes. Experiments concerning migration of artefacts confirmed various rate of their migration. Phenomenon is the result of shape of implements their weight as well as conditions at sediment. Small and flat objects migrated down slowly while isometric and heavy, faster. Was observed that during sinking tested objects did complicated motions. This suggest that artefacts discovered at archaeological sites are at various stages of migration. Moreover one can see that mentioned "activity" of objects is often various at various parts of one archaeological site.

Praca przedstawia najważniejsze wyniki badań multidyscyplinarnych realizowanych w zlewni Neru w regionie łódzkim w środkowej Polsce. Dla osadnictwa pradziejowego jako typowa przyjmowana jest jego lokalizacja w obrębie dolin rzecznych lub bardzo blisko ich krawędzi. Osady zakładane były przede wszystkim na słabo nachylonych stokach, przeważnie w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie den dolin. Zdecydowana większość stanowisk posadowiona została na podłożu piaszczystym. Zaobserwowano zakładanie punktów osadniczych związanych z gospodarką uprawową na podłożu bardziej drobnoziarnistym, zwłaszcza mułkowo-piaszczystym i drobnopiaszczystym, a punktów produkcyjnych zwykle na podłożu gruboziarnistym. Badania dowodzą, że punkty osadnicze zakładane były na obszarach cechujących siędużą różnorodnością morfologiczną, a co za tym idzie – dużą georóżnorodnością. Było to niezwykle sprzyjające dla rozwoju wielokierunkowej gospodarki rolnej realizowanej przez społeczności pradziejowe.
Paper presents the main results of multidisciplinary research undertaken in the Ner River catchment in the Łódź region in Central Poland. It is clear a location of prehistoric settlement within the river valleys or very close valley edge. Settlements were mainly established on gently inclined valley slopes in the close vicinity of valley floors. Almost all sites have been located on sandy ground. It seems to be interesting the fact of location of settlements connected with framing activity on the ground formed by fine-grained sediments - mainly by sands and silty sands. And settlements with productive activity remains have been established usually on the ground of coarser sediments. The research has shown that analysed points established in areas of different geomorphological zones, it means characterized by high geodiversity. It was a very suitable circumstance for development of multidirectional agricultural economy by prehistoric societies.

Re sults of geo log i cal and pol len in ves ti ga tions of the lake-bog sed i ments from the sec tion Wietrzychowice W5, located nearby the Neo lithic Fun nel Beaker Cul ture (FBC) mega liths, are pre sented. The pol len data re veal that sed imen ta tion at Wietrzychowice has be gun at the be gin ning of the Ho lo cene (Preboreal). Pol len anal y sis was used to determine stratigraphy with regard to sediment characteristics. The pollen spectrum was divided into 8 LPAZes (1-7Xa, 7Xb) which were also, where pos si ble, stratigraphically clas si fied. Ra dio car bon dat ing of 6 730 ± 90 BP (5 730–5 480 BC, MKL-702) at depth of 1.20 m con firmed the pol len anal y sis age es ti ma tion. Five set tle ment ep i sodes were found in or ganic sed i ments in the up per part of the W5 core. The first was pre sum ably dur ing the Preboreal, the sec ond in the early At lan tic, the third in the late At lan tic (prob a bly Neo lithic FBC), the fourth in the early Mid dle Ages and the last one in the late Mid dle Ages. The pol len anal y sis was use ful to point ir reg u lar i ties in sed i ment suc ces sion. Such a sit u a - tion made palaeoenvironmental in ter pre ta tion dif fi cult, but fur ther re search is still needed to en able an ac cu rate re construc tion.

This paper presents the results of multidisciplinary research on Neo-Holocene slope deposits cover undertaken in the Ner River basin in central Poland. An environmental archaeology research has been undertaken as part of archaeological investigations at the Szynkielew site. Distinctive archaeological relicts of human activity have been recorded at the site documenting periods of intense activity of human communities from the Bronze Age to Middle Ages. Geoarchaeological investigations of slope cover and overbank alluvia allowed for the recognition of fossil cultural layers, buried soils and sandy slope wash sediments accumulated on the surface of a valley slope and also thick overbank deposits in the valley floor. The features of studied slope deposits are most typical for “deluvial sands” and, if they concern more humic matter, for “soil deluvia”. Their accumulation resulted from natural processes initiated in the periods of intensive human impact. Artefacts and ecofacts included within deposits play a very important role to correctly recognise the chronology of covers. The origin and development stages of slope cover have been correlated with anthropogenic changes of the natural environment. Two main phases of acceleration of slope processes have been recognised as dated to the Middle Bronze Age and to the Early Middle Ages. The phase of accumulation of overbank deposits in the Early Middle Ages was recorded too. The medieval period of intense geomorphological processes took place in the 12th century AD after the area became a property of the chapter of the Cracow bishop.
Artykuł prezentuje wyniki multidyscyplinarnych badań neoholoceńskicj pokrywy stokowej odkrytej w zlewni Neru w Polsce Środkowej. Badania z zakresu archeologii środowiskowej zrealizowane zostały w ramach prac archeologicznych prowadzonych na stanowisku Szynkielew. Przyniosły one odkrycie na obszarze stanowiska bogatych reliktów intensywnego osadnictwa grup ludzkich od epoki brązu po wczesne średniowiecze. Przeprowadzone badania geoarcheologiczne pokryw stokowych oraz aluwiów facji pozakorytowej umożliwiły rozpoznanie warstw kulturowych, gleb kopalnych oraz deluwiów rozwiniętych na zboczach doliny, a także miąższej pokrywy osadów pozakorytowych w dnie doliny Dobrzynki. W obrębie pokrywy stokowej rozpoznane zostały deluwia piaszczyste, a także zawierające domieszki próchniczne tzw. deluwia glebowe. Akumulacja osadów stokowych zachodziła w warunkach silnej antropopresji, co potwierdzają występujące w nich artefakty i ekofakty, które ponadto umożliwiły precyzyjne określenie wieku odkrytych deluwiów. Inicjowanie oraz rozwój procesów stokowych zostały skorelowane z fazami antropogenicznego przeobrażania środowiska naturalnego. Wyróżniono dwie główne fazy wzmożenia tych procesów, których wiek określono na środkową epokę brązu oraz wczesne średniowiecze. Czas akumulacji pokrywy aluwiów pozakorytowych także określony został na wczesne średniowiecze. Wczesnośredniowieczna faza intensywnych procesów geomorfologicznych miała miejsce w XII wieku, po włączeniu „opola chropskiego” w obręb włości kapituły krakowskiej.

Scenario of climate changes in the Late Pleistocene and Holocene in Central Asia is very fragmentary and inconsistent. Therefore, interaction between the development and decline of ancient cultures and the climate fluctuations are difficult to be traced. To resolve this problem, the key role can be played by multidisciplinary studies of unique Late Pleistocene and especially Holocene loess – soil succession of the Tien Shan foothills in Uzbekistan. This area yields unique successions of paleosols interbedded with loesses that are particularly useful for paleoclimate analysis. They are represented by continuous and uninterrupted sedimentary sequences with a highly varied record of magnetic susceptibility. As such, they contain a full sequence of short-term climatic oscillations of the Holocene in high resolution and therefore, in this case, they are exceptional on global scale. The correlation of Late Pleistocene and Holocene climate changes scenario with stages of development and collapse of the past human settlement in Central Asia seems at present one of the most promising research directions, in line with the substantial course of interdisciplinary research on the interaction between humans and the natural environment.

This paper provides an overview of the first results of the Anthemous Valley Archaeological Project II, financed by the Polish National Science Centre (grant: 2013/09/N/HS3/ /01092). The aim of the project is to reconstruct the former landscapes of the alluvial Anthemous Valley in Northern Greece, near Thessaloniki City, in the light of archaeological and palaeogeographical data. The paper presents the results of two field surveys, which were conducted in 2013 and 2014 in order to gain a general understanding of the diversity of sedimentary environments in the valley in a wider context. Some palaeogeographical observations are also given.

Berenike Trogodytica was one of the key harbours on the Red Sea coast during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods and was a major trade and exchange hub connecting the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. Berenike’s geographical position was extraordinarily propitious owing partly to its natural harbours, protected against the prevailing northern winds, as well as its location in the vicinity of an ancient viewshed, the large peninsula of Ras Benas. This paper discusses how multifaceted geoarchaeological approaches to the study of ancient ports can contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms and logistics of maritime trade, as well as fluctuations in its quality and quantity. It also sheds new light on the significance of the effect that local and regional palaeoclimatic, landscape, seascape and environmental changes had on the development and decline of the port, and its changing role within the Red Sea–Indian Ocean maritime network.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań geoarcheologicznych i archeologicznych na stanowisku Rychnowo V położonym na wysoczyźnie morenowej pomiędzy dwoma rynnami subglacjalnymi odwadnianymi współcześnie przez górną Drwęcę i Grabiczek. Rzeźbę wysoczyzny urozmaicają zagłębienia po oczkach polodowcowych, o różnej wielkości i stopniu wypełnienia. Jeziorka te powstały w późnym glacjale i były zapełniane w holocenie przez osady organiczne i klastyczne. Na stanowisku archeologicznym stwierdzono kilka faz osadniczych związanych z kulturami łużycką (największa), wielbarską, a także wczesno- i późnośredniowieczną oraz nowożytną. Osadnictwo nie miało charakteru stałej osady, lecz raczej krótkotrwałych obozowisk. Najliczniejsze są artefakty kultury łużyckiej, których analiza sugeruje kilkukrotne powroty ludności na ten obszar w stosunkowo krótkim czasie (homogeniczna ceramika). Działalność ludności tej kultury (związana raczej nie z uprawą, lecz wypasem) doprowadziła na początku subatlantyku do erozji na stoku i fosylizacji gleby w bezodpływowej depresji.
The results of geoarchaeological and archaeological research at the Rychnowo V site are presented. The archaeological site is located on the moraine plateau between two subglacial tunnel valleys currently drained by the upper Drwęca and Grabiczek Rivers. Relief of the moraine plateau is varied by hollows on post-glacial depressions of varying size and degree of filling. These lakes were formed in the Late Glacial and were filled in the Holocene by organic and clastic deposits. At the archaeological site, several settlement phases have been identified related to the Lusatian (main phase) and Wielbark cultures, Early and Late Medieval and Modern periods. Not found in the site permanent or long-term settlement. The site should be considered as group of rather short-lived camps. The most numerous traces of Lusatian culture are not a single phase, but rather multiple returns to the same area at short intervals (the homogeneous ceramics). The activity of the people of Lusatian culture (connected not with cultivation but grazing) at the beginning of the Subatlantic led to slope erosion and soil fossilization in endorheic depression.

W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki geoarcheologicznych badań przeprowadzonych w obrębie oraz otoczeniu dwóch wielokulturowych stanowisk archeologicznych w Tominach i Zawadzie (południowo-wschodnia część Przedgórza Iłżeckiego), w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie północnej krawędzi pokrywy lessowej Wyżyny Sandomierskiej. Ich zasadniczych celem była kompleksowa rekonstrukcja osadniczej i gospodarczej aktywności człowieka w analizowanym obszarze w okresie ostatnich około 5 tysięcy lat, wraz z identyfikacją wszelkich jej uwarunkowań, zarówno na poziomie chronologiczno-kulturowym, jak i środowiskowym. Uzyskane wyniki pozwoliły na określenie przebiegu i skali lokalnych zjawisk kulturowych oraz związanych z nimi procesów osadniczych między późnym neolitem a czasami współczesnymi. Na podstawie uchwyconych śladów eksploatacji oraz przekształceń środowiska naturalnego podjęta została również próba określenia charakteru i stopnia lokalnej antropopresji w neoholocenie.
The article presents the results of geoarchaeological research carried out within and around two multicultural archaeological sites in Tominy and Zawada (south-eastern Iłża Foothills), in the immediate vicinity of the northern edge of the loess cover of the Sandomierz Upland. The main objective of the research was to comprehensively reconstruct human settlement and economic activity in the study area in the last ca. 5,000 years, along with identifying its conditions, both at the chronologicalcultural and the environmental level. The results allowed a determination of the course and scale of local cultural phenomena and related settlement processes between the late Neolithic and modern times. On the basis of traces of exploitation and transformation of the natural environment, an attempt was made to determine the nature and extent of local anthropopressure in the Neoholocene.

This study presents the results of a comprehensive geoarchaeological study implemented at an archeological site covering ca. 5 ha near the city of Csorna on the NW part of the Danube Plain, NW Hungary. The site itself exposed a complex fluvial system of an ice age creek with near bank and overbank areas (levee, point bar, back swamp). Spatial distribution of archeological features allowed for the interpretation of differential use of the fluvial landscape by different cultures. According to our data, the referred fluvial system must have emerged during the Late Glacial. At this time, creeks originating from hills to the SE followed a uniform NW trajectory. From the Holocene, small creeks were beheaded turning into inactive flood channels. It was the time when the gradual infilling of the floodplain started. Alternating layers of floodwater coarses and floodplain fines mark recurring floods at our site. These could have been correlated with cooler, wetter climatic phases of the North Atlantic, Western Europe and high stands in Central European lakes. Highest floods are recorded during the Late Bronze and Iron Ages besides the Neolithic. Pollen data enabled us to make inferences on the vegetation as well.

Remains of a vast Roman pottery production complex were found on the shore of the Plemići Bay (Općina Ražanac, Zadar county) in 2012, and confirmed by geophysical survey. Ground-penetrating radar measurements revealed outline of a rectangular building that finds analogies with Roman storehouses (horreum). The area occupied by remains of the Roman pottery workshop was covered by immense soil-debris flows. Three geological exposures located to the north of the remains of the Roman building were documented using lithological and malacological analysis, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The profiles revealed at least three generations of slope sediments, formed in result ofintensive soil or debris flows in a dry climate, most probably in 5th c. AD. In the next, wet phase sediments were transported downslope and deposited on the Roman structures after 5th c. AD. Environmental conditions at Pelmići weresupply with paleoclimate evidence from the Adriatic region. At ca. 1.5 cal. BP lake levels in the eastern Adriatic area were drastically reduced, probably because of strong decrease in humidity, correlated with the so-called North Atlantic Bond event 3. The drought was followed by a humid episode, also attested at the Plemići archaeological site.

The present paper attempts to attribute the role of bioclimatic indexes and their importance in the development and evolution of cultures. With the aid of GIS, a case study is presented aiming to point out the use of GIS is the study of bioclimatic indexes in theoretical study fields, such as, in this case, in Archaeology and more specifically, in the field of Geoarchaeology. Geoarchaeology is not a discipline, but an interdisciplinary approach, which has everything to gain by taking geomorphological methods and techniques into account (Fouache et al., 2010). Τhe study area is the Prefecture of Messenia, located in south west Greece. The Prefecture of Messenia is one of the best documented areas of mainland Greece. It has been both extensively surveyed and excavated. The archaeological finds are numerous, dating from prehistory to the modern times. Thus, a vast amount of information has helped historians, archaeologists and other scientists to recreate the past.

Nakhon Sawan Province is located in Upper Central Thailand, where the Chao Phraya River, the vital river of Thailand, begins. According to the distribution of the archaeological sites, the related geological features were divided into two groups by geodiversity scope: (1) hydrological sites - Chao Phraya river, Bueng Boraphet lake, (2) speleological sites - Tham Phet-Tham Thong cave and Khoa Nor mountain. The hydrological sites are the primary water resources of local people since many hundred years, including transportation, agriculture, and fishery, so there are many archaeological sites around there. In addition, the speleological sites are covered with limestones intruded by the granitic rocks, which has caused ore deposition in the form of skarn. The evidence of antiquities in the archaeological site near speleological sites suggests that ancient people discovered and produced their ores, notably iron in the studied area. Based on inventory, characterization, classification, and assessment methods, this preliminary geoarchaeology study can support Nakhon Sawan to promote geotourism for sustainability by their stunning geological features, fantastic nature as well as beautiful culture, both past and present.
