Opis:
The intensive development of industry generates a number of negative consequences, which leads to an ecological crisis. As a result, the soil on which plant products are grown is polluted by radionuclides, heavy metals, pesticides, and chemicals. That is why in the early 1960s, the alternative farming, which is also called biological, biodynamic or organic, began to develop in Europe. The movement for alternative farming is widely developing in industrialized countries with a high level of chemization of agriculture. Therefore, the proposed topic is extremely relevant in terms of rational nature use, ensuring the sustainable development of territories, as well as food security in Ukraine. The article deals with agroecological assessment of suitability of agricultural land of the Steppe Zone of Ukraine for ecological farming and bases on the modern data from the Kherson branch of the state institution “Institute of Soil Protection of Ukraine”. Spatial modeling of the presence of nutrients in the steppe soil of Ukraine was made by the means of ArcGIS 10.1 product. Taking into account the obtained data and spatial modeling, the territories with soils of limited suitability for ecological farming occupy 67.2% (1194.5 thousand hectares) of the Kherson region, unsuitable soils are located on 16.7% (297.4 thousand hectares) of agricultural land of the Steppe Zone of Ukraine and suitable lands were detected on 16.1% (286.2 thousand hectares) of the territory of the studied lands. The conclusion was made that with the actual availability of lands occupied under ecological farming (4.3% or 75.9 thousand hectares), the territory of the Steppe Zone of Ukraine has a prime potential to increase the area under ecological farming by 4.2 times. Therefore, the article paid attention to ecological farming, taking into account the specifics of the content of trace elements in the steppe soils and their compliance with the methodology for determining whether soils belong to the categories of suitable, limited-suitability and unsuitable for ecological farming.

Opis:
The recent deterioration of the ecological condition of agricultural lands, the tendency of reducing soil fertility, and the production of plant products, mostly of low quality, necessitate an understanding of the role of trace elements in the process of plant formation. The content of trace elements in soils affects the efficiency of absorption of basic nutrients by plants. Deficiency of iron, manganese and zinc reduces the supply of nitrogen to plants. Copper and calcium promote the absorption of phosphorus by plants, but excess of iron inhibits it. Excess of copper and molybdenum reduces the transfer of potassium to plants. Due to high yields of agricultural crops, a significant amount of trace elements is removed from the soil, so the introduction of the optimal amount of trace elements against the background of high agricultural technology is an additional measure to increase the yields and quality of agricultural products. Heavy metals are an important environmental factor, which, on the one hand, is necessary for living organisms, and on the other (with increasing concentration of these elements in the environment) constitutes a negative factor in their lives. The activities of industrial enterprises, car exhausts and other attributes of civilization, increase the content of heavy metals in soils and as a consequence negatively affect their quality. The term “heavy metals” is used for the metals with a specific gravity exceeding 5 g/cm3 or an atomic number of more than 20. Among them, lead and cadmium are considered the most dangerous. Therefore, modeling the content of trace elements and heavy metals in the Steppe soils of Ukraine is an additional mechanism for quality control of agricultural land and, as a consequence, of obtaining quality products to ensure food security of the state.

Opis:
One of the main problems in the scope of public health is poor identification of the waterborne diseases and their etiology. One of the aims of the new directive concerning the quality of water intended for human consumption is to implement the principles of hazard assessment in water supply systems (WSS) in the member states, on the basis of water quality monitoring and analyses of the system functioning conditions. The implementation of risk management procedures in WSSs is to ensure an increase in the water supply safety and, in turn, protect the consumer’s health against the harmful effects of any potable water contamination. At present, the secondary legislation to the Polish acts implementing the Directive of the Council of Europe is the Regulation of the Minister of Health on the quality of water intended for human consumption, which also sets forth the scope of monitoring the quality of hot water for Legionella spp., which can be an etiological factor of legionellosis. Another act regulating the water quality in terms of Legionella spp. is the Regulation of the Minister of Health on water quality in swimming pools. These acts, referring to the parameter of Legionella spp., are complementary. This paper presents the results of evaluating the change in the sanitary status of hot water quality in terms of contamination with Legionella spp. bacteria in the selected swimming pool facilities in southern Poland (Silesian Voivodship). On the basis of the available water quality test from state inspections (Chief Sanitary Inspectorate), an analysis of the microbiological quality of hot water in swimming pools was conducted. The analyses included a spatial distribution of those facilities, which results from the regionalisation subject to the territorially competent public health authority exercising supervision over the water quality in the Silesian Voivodship. The methods were presented for determination of the health risk of swimming pool users as a result of contamination of swimming pool water with Legionella spp. in relation to the availability of a given recreation facility. The final result of these studies is the use of GIS (Geographic Information System) tools in spatial risk interpretation.

Opis:
Spatial analysis and GIS technologies support decision-making in many different fields. New applications are also emerging in agriculture and the environment, one of which is beekeeping. Climate change, noticed on all continents, means that one of the priorities is sustainable development and care for the natural environment, also in cities where one of the trends is increasing the area of urban greenery. It means that one of our priorities is sustainable development and care for the natural environment, also in cities where one of the trends is increasing the green urban spaces. In Europe, the main pollinators are bees. They are essential for maintaining ecosystems in balance and biodiversity. The location of the municipal apiary must be planned in such a place as to provide bees with good living conditions and access to food, but also so that insects do not pose a threat to the inhabitants. This article presents a two-stage methodology for the use of multi-criteria spatial analysis supporting the determination of the optimal location of an urban apiary. The first stage consists in determining the areas of apiary location, considering the location criteria, and the second stage creates a rank of areas from the first stage, taking into account the needs of the bee colony. In order to automate the testing of various scenarios of the proposed solution, a data flow diagram tool was created in the ArcGIS Desktop environment using the Model Builder application. The evaluation of the obtained results shows that the research carried out with the use of GIS technology proved that the hypothesis was correct.

This paper aims to introduce GIS, its definition, principle, application in any discipline particularly maritime, its process, data sets and features and its benefits to maritime and universities. Specifically, the paper intends to provide an overview of its wide applications in maritime including but not limited to marine transportation, marine environment, port management and operation, maritime education and training (MET) and maritime research. GIS simplest task is in mapping and visualization. But its most important function is in spatial analysis. Spatial analysis takes into account the location, geometry, topology, and relationships of geographic data, which lend itself to intelligent decision making. GIS is not just for researchers and students. GIS is especially useful for decision makers such as: managers, administrators, and directors of large and small projects. Scenarios are “seen” and analyzed even before events happen. To planners and decision makers, this is very important because they can assess the impact of events or scenario and may save a lot of time, effort, and money before implementing the actual project. An additional skill on GIS when learned or thought would certainly result to a technically competent maritime global workforce. The paper would provide ideas on possible areas for collaborations among TransNav member institutions for data sharing which may be processed and analyzed by a GIS specialist.

The International Hydrographic Organization’s (IHO) [1] Transfer Standard for Digital Hydrographic Data S-57 [2] standard has been in force for more than a decade, and has successfully been used for official ENCs adopted by Hydrographic Offices around the world and by navigation equipment manufacturers. Additionally S-57 has been used for many additional purposes. However S-57, and especially the administration of the standard, has also experienced limitations. In 2010, IHO released the next generation hydrographic standard called S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model [3]. A move that will open up the door to new possibilities to existing S-57 users and potentially broaden the use of IHO standards in the hydrographic community. This paper will try to explain why an S-57 replacement was needed and give examples on some possibilities with S-100 and its derived product specifications such as S-101.

Opis:
The rapid rate of development in many domains of life, science and technologies results in a constantly increased amount of information of various types. Attempts at categorization of gathered data in logical and useful way has resulted in the creation of many information systems and development of geoinformation technologies. Because of theirs continuous evaluation it is difficult to elaborate new information technologies in which future software and hardware could be completely included. The complexity of tasks and the lack of experience in long-term operation of systems in which information technologies are used necessitate further detailed studies of the components of such technologies. Recently, there has been significant scientific and technical work on the creation of a geoportal system in Poland. Since there is no experience in the creation of this type of information system on a national scale and because of the high financial and time costs, it would be reasonable to analyze all components of the geoportal, including the technologies of obtaining and updating of data, geoinformation databases, metadata standards and the forms of the reports for final users. In this article, the disadvantages of geoinformation technology, which is used in the GIS and the geoportal, are highlighted. The complexity of georelative (three-dimensional and semantic) model data, the lack of correlation between the database content and type of user, no developments in the realm of automatic selection methods and data generalization during display, the lack of capability of presenting the database content in the hard copy form of map, etc., are included among shortcomings. It is noted, however, that there are theoretical developments which make it possible to modernize this technology and to simplify the methods which produce 3D geo-information, without the necessity of using expensive GIS software for mass users, like civil servants (from different administrative units). The basics of the SIP-alphabet are presented. Examples of fragments of topographic maps with semantic information written on it by means of SIP-alphabet symbols is also shown.
