GERMAN IMMIGRANTS
POLITICS
RADICALISM
CIVIL WAR
Opis:
Immigration from German-speaking countries to the United States rose dramatically after the mid-1840s, especially after the failed revolution of 1848-49. By the outbreak of the Civil War close to one million Germans had settled especially in Midwestern territories and states. The group contributed increasingly to the numbers of eligible voters, since Midwestern states, hoping to attract new settlers, liberalized their naturalization laws which allowed immigrants to vote even after receiving their “first papers,” i.e. after applying for naturalization as early as twelve months after their arrival in the new country. The votes of both groups were increasingly sought by the political parties. While the immigrant vote overwhelmingly favored the Democratic Party, because it offered protection and patronage in the face of nativist sentiments, the new Republican Party also made inroads into the German vote. The article points to the reasons for involvement of German radicals in antebellum politics and immigrants’ activity in the Republican Party despite apparent ideological and generational differences. The issue that helped unite liberals, radicals, and workers in this decade, was slavery and the fight for the abolition of this institution: whether in the media, or the political, and later, the military battleground.

INTERETHNIC RELATIONS
GERMAN AND SLAVIC IMMIGRANTS
TEXAS
MIDWEST
Opis:
A telling incident took place in a small Texas town in 1916: not the greatest year for German-Slavic relations on either side of the Atlantic, one might think. But even at this late date, the German language was still being taught in the public schools of Needville, Texas, about 60 km southwest of Houston, using a book originally published for the St. Louis public elementary schools. In the wartime anti-German hysteria, school authorities in Needville ordered all these textbooks to be gathered and burned, but one copy was rescued and preserved–ironically not by a German-American pupil, but by a Czech girl in the second grade, whose parents spoke German as well as Czech, and wanted her to learn the language. As my essay will demonstrate, this was only the tip of the iceberg. In Texas and much of the Midwest, especially in rural areas, relations between German immigrants and their Czech, Polish, and Sorbian neighbors was for the most part quite friendly. Much of this was based on their cultural affinities which set them apart from Anglo-Americans, and at times united them against a common enemy, one might say.

Opis:
The goal of the article is to show the partial multilingualism of the Brazilian Mennonites, especially the use of standard German and “Mennonite Low German” (Plautdietsch). A special attention would be given to two Mennonite diaries written in Brazil, which represent huge influence of different cultures and languages, showing in this way the life trajectory of the Mennonite immigrants in South America. The main questions are the constitution of the identity of German speaking Mennonites as well as the code switching in different roles and situations. Another aspect to discuss are the perspectives of use of Plautdietsch and its role as a language with less prestige.
De Sproak, detismiene kleine Heijmat. Osady mennonickie na południu Brazylii Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest częściowej wielojęzyczności brazylijskich mennonitów, w szczególności użyciu standardowego języka niemieckiego i dialektu Plautdietsch. Punkt wyjścia przyczynku stanowią dwa pamiętniki mennonickie napisane w Brazylii, które wykazują silny wpływ innych kultur i języków, pozwalając prześledzić drogi życiowe imigrantów mennonickich w Ameryce Południowej.

Opis:
The article deals with the influence which have the competences in mother tongue on the second language acquisition. Furthermore it is about the possibilities to apply these competences to German as a second language by young immigrants at school. Along with the theoretical expositions the author shows some implications for scholar instruction by using the mother tongue as a resource to acquire a second language.

Opis:
Social sciences are interested in ethnic entrepreneurship as a chance for migrants to (better) integrate into the host labour market, and in consequence into a host society. Th e multidimensional models capture a wide range of factors at the bottom of the economic behaviour of migrant entrepreneurs, and they increasingly consider that migrants might profit in business from sustaing their social ties with the country of their origin. Looking at Polish migrant entrepreneurs in eastern German regions bordering to Poland we plead for a relational perspective which considers migrants’ business activities in relation to the patterns of trans-border residential mobility and complex social and economic transformations in Polish and German border regions.

Opis:
Brazilian society received several groups of European immigrants. In the XIX and in the first decade of the XXth centuries, Germanic immigrants’ entrance was emphasized, although they had different cultural experiences. They were admired in the beginning of immigrant’s process, and have come to be seen as harmful in Brazilian people’s formation. In the face of the State that was establishing national identity through white optics, catholic and farmer, German immigrants lost their national references and have come to be seen as the exclusion prism: they were Protestants or Jews. The germanidade exaltation was neutralized and the conflict against these immigrants was concentrated on questions of religious nature; they were not Germanys anymore, they were non-Catholics. The present paper analyses the religious conflict among catholicism, judaism and protestantism, which involved German immigrants and its descendants in Brazil, when its national identity was replaced by its religion that was considered incomprehensible by 1930’s Brazilian’s government. Not-Catholics’ strength and beliefs was recurring in Latin America, which allows a dialogue between this research and other studies about religious re-strictions for immigrants communities
