    Opis:
    This article focuses on documentary narration in literary prose, which is analyzed with regard to its function and poetics using the example of selected texts of GDR protocol literature and German documentary literature of the post-reunification years. The question of what constitutes the peculiarity of documentary literature and what caused its popularity in the pre- and post-reunification period will be explored. Furthermore, selected examples will be used to illustrate how the levels of the factual and the fictional intermingle and complement each other in the individual texts. The texts discussed in this article are narratives that remain close to factual events, but at the same time fictionalize them and therefore cannot be considered completely and unambiguously in either the category of literary fiction or documentary.

    Opis:
    Noch weit über dreißig Jahre nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung gibt es in der germanistischen Literaturwissenschaft in keiner Weise eine Einheitlichkeit in der Begriffsbestimmung zu der nach 1989 in Ostdeutschland geschriebenen Literatur. Termini wie Wendeliteratur, Regionalliteratur, ostdeutsche Literatur und Post-DDR-Literatur bestimmen die Aussagen. Dabei ist auffallend, dass in literaturwissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen der postkoloniale Diskurs über Jahre weitestgehend ausgeblendet bzw. sofort wieder in Frage gestellt wird. In der Aufnahme postkolonialer Verfahren wird in dem Beitrag der ‚dritte Raum‘ in der Post-DDR-Literatur bestimmt, indem die vom amerikanischen Kulturwissenschaftler und Philosophen Homi K. Bhabha geprägten ‚Gegengeschichten‘ in ihrer Bedeutung erschlossen werden, da sie kritische Perspektiven auf Einheit und Vielheit einer Nation sowie deren Postulat einer stabilen teleologisch und hegemonial informierten Geschichtspolitik artikulieren können.
    Jeszcze trzydzieści lat po zjednoczeniu Niemiec w literaturoznawstwie germanistycznym nie ujednolicono w żaden sposób określania literatury powstałej po 1989 roku w Niemczech Wschodnich. W wypowiedziach na ten temat pojawiają się pojęcia takie, jak ‘literatura przełomu’, ‘literatura regionalna’, ‘literatura wschodnioniemiecka’ lub ‘literatura post-NRD-owska’. Zauważalne jest równocześnie, że w pracach literaturoznawczych przez wiele lat unikano dyskursu postkolonialnego, bądź też natychmiast go negowano. W nawiązaniu do metod analizy zjawisk postkolonialnych w artykule określono ‘trzecią przestrzeń’ w literaturze post-NRD-owskiej poprzez uściślenie znaczenia tzw. ‘historii przeciwstawnych’ ukonstytuowanych przez amerykańskiego kulturoznawcę i filozofa Homi K. Bhabha, gdyż pozwalają one na krytyczne spojrzenie na jedność i wielość jednego narodu oraz jego postulat prowadzenia teleologicznie stabilnej i hegemonialnie zorientowanej polityki historycznej.
    The German unification process took for more than thirty years ago and still there is no consistency in German literary studies in how to define literature that has been produced in East Germany after 1989. There are terms like ‘Wendeliteratur’, ‘Regionalliteratur’, East German literature or Post-GDR-Literature. Postcolonial discourse has rarely been considered by German philologists or has been questioned from the core. By using postcolonial analysis methods my aim is to define the ‘third room’ in post-GDR-literature and to find ‘Gegengeschichten’ the American scientist and philosopher Homi K. Bhabha located in his postcolonial studies on modern nations. The ‘Gegengeschichten’ are able to articulate a critical perspective on unity and plurality of nations and questions their posit of a stable, teleological and hegemonical informed history policy.

    The politics of memory and culture of the Polish People’s Republic alludes to Ideologiekritik in its idiosyncratic way characterized by Marxist utopianism. In reality, this leads to reversing this theory. The causes of fascism are seen in “German imperialism”. For political and strategic reasons the German Democratic Republic becomes one of the main partners of the Polish People’s Republic, with regard to which it is capable of accomplishing the guidelines of its policy in the cultural dimension. This is accompanied by an intensive cultural exchange between the two countries. In the language of official politics manifested, for instance, in the strategy of publishing houses of the Polish People’s Republic the culture of the two countries develop in a parallel fashion, which is an obvious product of the propaganda.
    Z przyczyn polityczno-strategicznych jednym z głównych partnerów PRL, wobec którego jest w stanie realizować wytyczne swej polityki w wymiarze kulturowym jest NRD. Następuje intensywna wymiana kulturalna między tymi krajami. Na podstawie strategii wydawnictw PRL publikujących niemal każdy utwór literacki napisany przez pisarzy NRD można by sądzić, że kultury obu krajów rozwijają się równolegle. Jest to jednak oczywisty wytwór propagandowy.

    Literatura niemieckojęzyczna jest obecna w polskiej rzeczywistości literackiej od dawna z różną intensywnością. Obecność taką stymulują i umożliwiają tłumaczenia tekstów na język polski, bo wówczas dostępne są one szerokiej publiczności, przede wszystkim tej, która nie posługuje się językiem niemieckim. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiona została nieobecność literatury postenerdowskiej, tzn. tej literatury, która powstawała już po upadku NRD i zjednoczeniu Niemiec i charakteryzowała się przede wszystkim skupieniem na sprawach byłej NRD, jej idealizacji czy krytycznej obserwacji aż po nostalgiczne wspomnienia z dzieciństwa i młodości. Autor konstatuje, że po roku 1989 literatura taka jest dość skąpo reprezentowana na polskim rynku wydawniczym, mimo że tłumacze i wydawcy zadbali w ostatnim ćwierćwieczu, by literatura niemieckojęzyczna docierała do polskiego czytelnika. Jednakże opisywany tu nurt literacki jest rzeczywiście mało reprezentatywny w polskiej w przestrzeni wydawniczej. W artykule zostaje podjęta próba wskazania tekstów, które zasługują na to, by w całości być dostępnymi w polskiej wersji językowej. Chodzi tu o autorów takich jak: Christa Wolf, Hermann Kant i Thomas Brussig. Cała trójka reprezentuje różny rodzaj pisarstwa, różne pokolenia, zaangażowanie oraz estetykę. Co jest dla nich wspólne w kontekście nieobecności w polskich przekładach, to fakt, że swoimi książkami (Wolf – Was bleibt, Kant – Der Abspann, Brussig – Helden wie wir) wykreowali pewne wydarzenia, postawy i dyskusje. I dla lepszego i pełniejszego zrozumienia specyfiki dzisiejszych Niemiec Wschodnich przez Polaków poznanie także tych aspektów ma ogromne znaczenie.
    German literature has been present in Polish cultural reality for a long time − although with variable popularity − due to the translations that produced Polish versions available for wider audience, including readers unfamiliar with German language. Yet, the article discusses a branch of German literature still absent in Poland – the so-called Post-GDR Literature, written after the fall of the German Democratic Republic and the German reunification. The Post-GDR Literature addresses a variety of issues related to the GDR, idealizes or critically describesits reality often perceived by writers as the reality of their childhood or youth. The author of the article takes into consideration the fact that on Polish book market after 1989 this literature is almost unavailable despite numerous efforts of translators and publishers and their initiatives aimed at popularization of German literature in Poland. Thus, the article subsequently discusses texts (Was bleibt by Christa Wolf, Der Abspannby Hermann Kant and Heldenwiewir by Thomas Brussig) significant enough to deserve unabridged Polish versions. The three writers represent different genres, aesthetics, generations and level of involvement in political activity. Nonetheless, their works all inspired crucial discussions, attitudes or events and are therefore of vital importance for Polish readers willing to fully understand the reality of Eastern Germany and the impact of its legacy on current times.

    Uwe Johnson was perceived before 1989 exclusively as a writer of the division of Germany. Born in Pomerania (Kamień Pomorski), he spent his childhood and early youth in Mecklenburg. After obtaining his university degree in German philology in the German Democratic Republic, he moved to West Berlin. In the same year he published his first novel Mutmaßungen über Jakob (the Polish edition Domniemania w sprawie Jakuba appeared in 2008), which besides the reflection on the division of Germany in the context of the Cold War, dividing Europe into two political camps, extensively describes his holidays he spent until 10 years of age in Darzewice near Wolin. It was, looking through the prism of the author’s whole biography, the most happy period in his life and therefore a point of reference for forming a worldview in a bipolar world of the ideological indoctrination. The characters of his novels written in prose, like Jakob Abs, the main character of the novel mentioned above, hail from Pomerania. The article provides an analysis of determinants of the author’s regional identity from the perspective of self-reflection in which a central position occupies the category of small homeland as understood in the theory of concrete utopia (Ernst Bloch), as well that of spiritual affinity (Johann Wolfgang Goethe), and spiritual homelessness (Siegfried Kracauer).
    Uwe Johnson był przed 1989 rokiem postrzegany wyłącznie jako pisarz „podziału Niemiec”. Urodzony na Pomorzu (Kamień Pomorski), okres dzieciństwa i wczesnej młodości spędził w Mecklemburgii. Po studiach germanistycznych w NRD przeniósł się w 1959 roku do Berlina Zachodniego. W tym samym roku ukazała się jego pierwsza powieść Mutmaßungen über Jakob (pol. Domniemiania o Jakubie, 2008), która – oprócz refleksji nad podziałem Niemiec w kontekście klimatu zimnej wojny dzielącej Europę na dwa obozy polityczne – szeroko opisuje wakacyjny czas spędzany do dziesiątego roku życia w Darzewicach koło Wolina. Jest to, patrząc przez pryzmat całej biografii autora, najszczęśliwszy okres w jego życiu i z tego powodu – punkt odniesienia do ukształtowania się światopoglądu w dwubiegunowym świecie indoktrynacji ideologicznej. Bohaterowie jego utworów pisanych prozą wywodzą się, podobnie jak Jakob Abs, główny bohater z wyżej wymienionej powieści, również z Pomorza. Tekst ten poświęcony jest analizie determinantów tożsamości regionalnej pisarza z perspektywy samorefleksji, w której kategoria małej ojczyzny w rozumieniu teorii konkretnej utopii (Ernst Bloch), zajmuje miejsce centralne – pokrewieństwa duchowego (Johann Wolfgang Goethe) oraz duchowej bezdomności (Siegfried Kracauer).

    From all of the German literature distributed in Poland during the first half of the nineteen fifties, that of the GDR was the most strongly represented, because like the People's Republic, it was part of the Eastern Bloc. A substantial part of this literature touched upon the themes of the Second World War. As some prominent Eastern German authors had taken part in the Spanish Civil War in 1936-1939, this subject also couldn't be ignored.The introduction in 1949 of socialist realism as the most important criterion of art, and particulary strong political pressure, led to a great deal of confusion and insecurity, not only for Polish publishing houses, but also among the censors, whose task was to take decisions about what literature could be printed. Censors’ opinions in this period often differed, not only in terms of detailed matter, but also in the final decisions about the eventual fate of the title submitted for evaluation.

    The travel reports about observations and experiences journalists of the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT made while travelling in the GDR in the years 1964 and 1986 and which they published in books belong to the genre of travel literature (reference is made to Goethe, Schummel and Döblin). Both travels were made at the invitation of the government of the GDR and were allegedly completely free – but part of a “plan”. Due to the isolation resulting from the construction of the Berlin wall in 1961, both books met with great public interest. In their politically accented report, obviously designed to medially support the so-called “new East politics” of the Brandt government, the journalists paint a glowing picture, minimizing the reality of the party dictatorship, even though solid analyses of the actual conditions in the GDR were available. This can be compared to Lion Feuchtwanger’s “Moskau 1937” which he published “for his friends” about his travel to Moscow. However, the communist Feuchtwanger openly expressed his sympathy and characterized the Soviet Union as a dictatorship. To sum up, the reports of the ZEIT journalists can be classified as ‘political-fictional’ literature of purpose, on the one hand, because of their concealed political objective, and on the other hand, because the authors, due to their salon Marxist background, were, like Feuchtwanger, possibly of the opinion that they saw something “great”.

    The title of the story What Remains by Christa Wolf denotes one of the main topics of the present discussion about German literature after 1989. The article presents the new questions (e.g. one or two German literature(s)? What does ‘GDR literature‘ mean? Is it a ‘special case’?) and changing conditions of the study of East German literature. A few new historical works discussing German literature since 1945, mainly since the reunification, and a few theoretical approaches (e.g. GDR literature as a chronotope and as regional literature) are presented.

    Opis:
    Jürgen Fuchs (1950–1999) was born in the GDR and was a writer, journalist, essayist, peace movement activist and psychologist. Before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 Fuchs was the most important author living in the forced emigration. In 1976 Fuchs was arrested by the Ministry for State Security. The reason for prosecution was political. The government deprived of his citizenship and send him to the West Germany. The basis of the exile was connected with long conflict between authorities and Fuchs litetature. The article shows the biography, creation and political activity of J. Fuchs who was known in the 21st century mainly as a dissident and political author meanwhile he was a writer focused on GDR and the settlement with German dictatorship. This contribution explains the reason of difficult reception of his heritage and encourages the thinking about East Germany legacy.

    In der DDR-Literatur, in der die Problematik des Zweiten Weltkriegs zentral blieb, sind Texte, die den Völkermord an den Juden thematisieren, kaum präsent. Der Hauptgrund für diese Lücke liegt in der durch die SED-Spitze proklamierten politischen Linie: Die DDR-Führung, die den „antifaschistischen Gründungsmythos“ kreierte, ernannte den sozialistischen Staat zum „Sieger der Geschichte“ und wollte somit keine Verantwortung für die Shoah übernehmen. Darüber hinaus führte das DDR-Regime eine aggressive antiisraelische Politik. Das Schaffen Stephan Hermlins aus dem Gründungsjahr der DDR (1949) ist eines der wenigen Beispiele für die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Holocaust in der DDR-Literatur. Zum Ausgangspunkt seiner Ausführungen werden die von ihm 1949 besuchten Erinnerungsorte: Auschwitz und Warschauer Ghetto-Ehrendenkmal. Das Gedenken der Ermordeten wird bei dem Autor zur absoluten Referenz.
    In the literature of the GDR, where the problem of the II World War was a central topic, texts that were related to the annihilation of the European Jews were almost nonexistent. The reasons of this void were political matters: The political leaders of the GDR created so called “anti-fascist creator myth” of a new country and claimed themselves as “the heroes of the history”; additionally they declared aggressive anti-Israeli politics. The works of Stephan Hermlin, written in 1949, in the same year as the creation of the GDR, are a few of the examples that faced the Holocaust in the literature generated in the East Germany. The main starting points in the author’s writings were the places of the remembrance that he visited in 1949: Auschwitz and the Monument of the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising; in his writings the memory of the murdered victims becomes a value of a superior significance.
    W literaturze NRD, dla której problematyka II wojny światowej była tematem centralnym, teksty poświęcone zagładzie Żydów są niemalże nieobecne. Powodem tej luki są względy polityczne: przywódcy NRD wykreowali „antyfaszystowski mit założycielski” państwa i ogłosili się „zwycięzcami historii”, ponadto prowadzili agresywną politykę antyizraelską. Teksty Stephana Hermlina, powstałe w 1949 r., czyli w roku utworzenia NRD, są jednym z niewielu przykładów mierzenia się z Holokaustem w literaturze tworzonej we Wschodnich Niemczech. Punkt wyjścia rozważań Hermlina stanowią odwiedzone przez niego w 1949 r. miejsca pamięci: Auschwitz i Pomnik Bohaterów Getta Warszawskiego. Pamięć o zamordowanych staje się w jego tekstach wartością nadrzędną.

    Tematem artykułu są niemieckie literackie reakcje na zjednoczenie Niemiec w 1990roku i likwidację NRD. Na przykładzie powieści Uwe Tellkampa Der Turm. Geschichte aus einemversunkenen Land [Wieża. Historia z zaginionego kraju, 2008] pokazano sposoby nawiązywaniado tradycji literackiej (m.in. utopii) oraz posługiwania się wzorcami narracyjnymi.
    The article presents the German literary reactions to the German unification in 1990and dissolution of the East German state. It is focused on the novel Der Turm. Geschichte auseinem versunkenen Land (2008) by Uwe Tellkamp, his dealing with literary traditions (amongothers with utopia) and with narrative patterns.
