Opis:
This article shows the short story of the birth and development of underground military facilities in the Sowie Mountains area. Particular attention has been paid to the historical matter of “Riese” (“Giant”) facilities. In addition to the underground teaching paths they are an important source of information for the modern history and the past geological ages. This tourist attraction allows researchers to draw underground geological maps and aids the precise recognition of rock formations that surround the “Riese” facilities. This makes it possible to establish many geotouristical routes revealing the beauty of the surrounding nature and observe the geological structures impossible to see from the surface.

Opis:
Argentopentlandite has been found in samples collected on the dump of the Michael mine, an old silver mine in Zagórze Śląskie in the northern part of the Góry Sowie mountains. Though argentopentlandite is not a very common mineral, it is well known from high-temperature hydrothermal veins and from Ni-Cu deposits hosted in ultramafic rocks also containing platinum-group minerals. The argentopentlandite has been recognized in a sulphide nest in association with pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in massive barite. In comparison to other occurrences (see Table 2), this mineral is characterized by a low Ni content (ave. 16.02wt% - EDS; 16.43wt% - WDS), a lack of cobalt and a relatively high copper content (ave. 2.13wt% - EDS; 1.55wt% - WDS). Based on these data, it can be concluded that the argentopentlandite, and the associated sulphides, were precipitated from hydrothermal fluids shortly after barite, the major vein constituent. As the optical properties of the argentopentlandite in reflected light are rather similar to those of bornite, it can be overlooked during routine observations. Thus, argentopentlandite or associated ore mineralization may also occur in other barite veins in the area.

Opis:
This study provides the preliminary report about first occurrence of orthorhombic 11C pyrrhotite (Fe(1-x)S) from the Sudetes, Poland. Samples of pyrrhotite-containing two-pyroxene gabbro were found in a classic pegmatite locality in Michałkowa near Walim in the Góry Sowie Block. Based on microscopic methods, pyrrhotite is associated with pentlandite, chalcopyrite, chromite, ilmenite, gersdorffite, magnetite, biotite, magnesiohornblende, clinochlore, lizardite and talc. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) indicate that pyrrhotite has orthorhombic 11C structure and it is characterized by: a = 3.433(9) Å, b = 5.99(2) Å, c = 5.7432(5) Å, β = 90º and d102 = 2.06906 Å. Mössbauer studies confirmed the XRD data. Pyrrhotite has three sextets with hyperfine parameter values 30.8 T for sextet A, 27.9 T and 25.8 T for sextets B and C respectively, indicating orthorhombic structure, the composition near Fe10S11 and x = 0.0909.

Opis:
As part of the 2nd Scientific Workshop “Heritage and History of Mining”, which took place on October 3-4, 2020 in Ludwikowice Kłodzkie (Góry Sowie, SW Poland), two field sessions were conducted. The sites of the first of them, a pedestrian one, were located in Ludwikowice Kłodzkie. The first object shown was the Henryk adit (formerly Hellmuth), which was part of the 19th-century Glückauf Louis hard coal mine, incorporated into the Wenceslaus mine in 1914. The adit features a well-preserved brick wall housing and an explosives chamber from 1922. The Gontowa facility, an element of the Nazi RIESE complex, was built at the end of World War II. It is a system of two adits and drifts connecting them with a total length of 800 m. Elements of the geological structure and the preserved relics of the technique of mining works are perfectly visible in it. The second field trip led through the region of Walim, Zagórze Śląskie and Świerki. The small Silberloch adit is located below the Walimska Pass. The oldest archival records about it come from 1548, it was already considered old then. Earlier, silver ores were searched there, the works were carried out by hand. Traces of the use of hammers and irons are perfectly visible in several places. There are also blasting holes in the deeper part of the excavation. Near the Bystrzyckie Lake, there are remains of underground mining works carried out before the 18th century in the village of Schlesierthal. Lead, silver, zinc and copper ores were searched for in quartz-barite hydrothermal veins. In Świerki there is a large, closed melaphyre quarry, established in 1902 by the company Steinwerke C.C. v. Thaden. Ten years later, the plant was modernized and a nearly 3-kilometer long ropeway to a nearby railway siding was built. The mine, with breaks, operated until 2012. An interesting fact was the presence of a 1.5-meter-thick jasper seam in the deposit.

Opis:
Znosko (1981a, b) first stated the important fact that the Sowie Góry "nappe” was lying on the rocks of the Middle Sudetic Ophiolite Complex. In the light of current geophysical and tectonic data, it still remains up-to-date. Both those articles have initiated a new look at the Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Sudetes and its surroundings. This article presents an analysis ofpotential boundaries oflithostratigraphic terranes in the Sudetes and the Fore-Sudetic Block, confirmed by the waveforms of gravity horizontal gradients. Gravimetric modelling along the selected profile 3 makes it possible to present the subsurface geological structure. Metamorphic rocks of the Sowie Góry complex can probably reach a depth of almost 5 km on the Fore-Sudetic Block. Below them are mafic and ultramafic rocks, reaching a depth of up to 12 km, which belong to the Middle-Sudetic Ophiolite Complex. The kinematic data from the Sowie Góry metamorphic complex indicate displacement with the top-to-SW and to-S, as in the Middle-Sudetic Ophiolite Complex. Controversy over the origin and the geotectonic environment of the Early Ordovician protolith of the Sowie Góry gneisses, which are probably a magma product of arc-type magmatism formed above a subduction zone of the Tornquist Ocean. The Sowie Góry terrane can be considered as a relic of the Early Ordovician Paleozoic magma arc (the so-called peri-Baltic arc). The Sowie Góry terrane was moved towards the SW and S on obducted dismembered fragments of ophiolite sequences after closing the Rheic Ocean during the Eo-Variscan orogenesis.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to assess the degree of damage to spruce trees and stands and to study their growth responses to the changing environmental conditions in the Sowie Mountains (Central Sudety Mts.). To assess the degree of damage to trees, three methods based on crown characteristics were used. The types of growth responses of trees to changing environmental conditions were additionally taken into account in one of the methods. Regardless of the assessment method, spruce stands in the Sowie Mountains demonstrated a high level of damage. The poorest growth conditions were found in the period 1966−1980 when a large number of trees showed negative growth responses, indicating a decrease in radial increment. The period 1996−2010 showed an improvement in the growth conditions of trees because the proportion of trees with negative growth responses decreased, while the proportion of trees with positive growth responses increased. It was also found that the growth conditions for spruce were more favourable in the lower montane forest zone (above 600 m a.s.l.), and less favourable at the foothills (below 600 m a.s.l.), which may be caused by the competition of beech replacing spruce in the lower locations in the mountains.

Opis:
Creation or agricultural terraces is one of the main method of anti-erosional protection in the mountain regions. In the Sudetes Mountains the terraces are in many places relict landforms, which developed during previous centuries, when the extent of settlements and agricultural land use was much more widespread. The article presents the agricultural terraces in the Sowie Mts in the context of other, very few studies, which were conductcd in the Sudetes referring to agricultural terraces. Terracing leads to changes of slope longitudinal profiles, dividing them into separate units with erosion dominating in their upper parts and accumulation in lower parts, behind the upper edge of every terrace. The steeper and the longer is the slope, the higher is the terrace. Also the thickness of agricultural sandy-silty layer, which originates from slope wash and ploughing, and accumulates over the terrace edge, increases according to the increase or slope inclination and slope length. The material which is stored within the terraces is enriched with fine-grained particles (sandy-silty), due to the selective character or surface wash. In contrast, the upper parts of slope are left more coarsegrained. The material accumulated within the terraces allows for estimation of the minimum anthropogenic denudation from slopes under present or former ploughing. The values of denudation for the Sudetes range from 0,09 to 2,7 mm year⁻¹ and depend strongly on lithology, slope inclination and length.

Opis:
The newly discovered Julianna pegmatitic system from the Piława Górna Quarry (the Góry Sowie Block, Sudetes Mts., NE margin of the Bohemian Massif) is described in terms of geological setting, petrography and descriptive mineralogy. The system represents the largest pegmatitic occurrence in the Polish Sudetes and consists of a complex network of cogenetic rare-element granitic pegmatites that intruded into tectonized amphibolite as discordant dikes. The pegmatites range from barren and weakly zoned to texturally well-differentiated ones that are composed of a fine-grained border zone, coarse-grained wall zone, graphic and blocky feldspar intermediate zones and a quartz core. Unidirectional and skeletal solidification textures are well-developed. The Julianna pegmatites consist of rock-forming plagioclase (ŁAn39), microcline, quartz and biotite accompanied mostly by accessory to minor muscovite, tourmaline, garnet and beryl. They crystallized from anatectic melt of hybrid NYF (niobium-yttrium-fluorine) + LCT (lithium-cesium-tantalum) geochemical characteristics. Pegmatites with a low to moderate degree of fractionation, that dominate in the Julianna system, bear NYF-signature accessory minerals, such as allanite-(Ce), columbite-, euxenite- and samarskite-group minerals, fergusonite-(Y) and gadolinite-(Y). However rare dikes that attained a very high degree of fractionation contain typical minerals of LCT-signature including tourmalines of the elbaite-olenite-rossmanite series, lepidolite, lithiophilite, spodumene, Cs-rich beryl and pollucite.
