Opis:
Fish meat is a valuable dietary component owing its exceptionally high nutritional value, as it contains high quality protein, fat (including n-3 acids) and a variety of vitamins and minerals. The aim of this study was to determine the content of ash and minerals (macro- and microelements) in three freshwater fish species, and quantitative changes in smoked and marinated products. The research material originated from three species, i.e. common carp (Cyprinus carpio), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykkis) and northern pike (Esox lucius). The following parameters were determined in samples of raw as well as processed fish meat: ash (using the gravimetric method, according to PN-ISO 936:2000) and the minerals Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu (using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry ICP-OES). The statistical analysis of the results did not show significant differences in the ash content in meat of the three fish species. The ash content in processed fish meat differed significantly from that in raw fish, thus indicating changes in concentrations of the minerals. The differences depended on the applied processing technology. As for the mineral content, the examined fish species achieved high nutritional quality, with the highest content of magnesium, iron and zinc in common carp, potassium and phosphorus in rainbow trout and calcium in pike. The levels of the minerals in processed fish meat differed significantly from those in the raw material, especially in carp products (higher amounts of almost all the determined elements). Smoking as well as marinating resulted in a considerable increase in the sodium contet, and the highest values were obtained for marinated rainbow trout. Monitoring the content of macro- and microelements in fish meat is important for the consumer.

Opis:
The present study was conducted to assessment the some heavy metals, chromium, cadmium, copper, lead, iron, zinc and manganese concentrations in gill, liver, kidney, intestine and muscle of the selected freshwater fish Tilapia mossambica, Claris batrachus, Labeo rohita, Mystus vittatus and Cyprinus carpio communis of the Veeranam Lake Cuddalore district, Tamilnadu, India collected between January 2010- December 2010. Heavy metals concentrations varied in significantly depending upon the type of fish tissues and locations. In the selected freshwater fish, liver tissues appeared to have significantly highest level of chromium followed by Cd, Cu, Pb, Fe, Zn and Mn. The maximum level of chromium in liver tissue followed by the gill, kidney and intestine was found in the of Tilapia mossambica, Claris batrachus, Labeo rohita, Mystus vittatus and Cyprinus carpio communis while the minimum level of manganese was observed in the muscle tissue of Tilapia mossambica, Claris batrachus, Labeo rohita, Mystus vittatus and Cyprinus carpio communis. These levels of metals higher in the fish tissue may be due to increased fertilizers, agricultural wastes, industrial effluents and some anthropogenic activities high in the investigated area.

Opis:
Fossil utricular otoliths (= lapilli) from cypriniform fishes have long been recorded from European Oligocene and Neogene freshwater and oligohaline sediments. Until now, their determination was limited to the family level owing to the lack of morphological investigations on lapilli of Recent cypriniforms. The present study introduces a terminology for the lapillus morphology that is based on the lapilli of 134 specimens of 20 cyprinid and one balitorid species. It is demonstrated that the lapillus has valuable characters for taxonomic classification. As a result, fossil lapilli from Oligocene and Miocene continental deposits from the western Mediterranean, the Swiss and the South German Molasse Basin, the Mainz Basin, and additionally from Anatolia could be determined. Nine species were identified: aff. Abramis sp. vel aff. Alburnus sp., aff. Alburnoides sp., aff. Barbus sp., cf. Leuciscussp., Palaeoleuciscus sp., Palaeotinca moeddeni sp. nov., Palaeotinca sp. 1, aff. Phoxinus sp., and aff. Rutilus sp. vel aff. Scardinius sp. Our study includes the oldest record of a Phoxinus−related and a Palaeotinca species from Europe. Additionally, aff. Abramis sp. vel aff. Alburnus sp. and aff. Alburnoides have been identified as fossils for the first time. The determination of the fossil lapilli has been supported by means of pharyngeal teeth, with the exception of aff. Abramis sp. vel aff. Alburnus sp., whose lapilli were found together with pharyngeal teeth of Palaeocarassius sp. It is suggested that these so−called Palaeocarassius pharyngeal teeth do not belong to an ancestor of the Carassiuslineage, but to a forerunner of the Abramis or Alburnuslineage. Our results support the previously described turnover in the Paratethys freshwater fish fauna about 17–18 Ma ago, when Palaeotinca spp. became extinct and the first appearance of Palaeoleuciscussp. and Palaeocarassiussp. (= aff. Abramissp. vel aff. Alburnus sp.) occurred. The Oligocene and Miocene cypriniform fishes did not evolve any provincialism from southern France throughout the Molasse Basin to the Mainz Basin.

Opis:
W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono, że dioksyny, furany i PCB występują w większych stężeniach w rybach bałtyckich niż w rybach słodkowodnych. Spośród dioksynopodobnych PCB w obu grupach przeważają kongenery 105 i 118, zaś spośród niedioksynopodobnych PCB kongenery 138 i 153.
Dioxins are a group of toxic substances hazardous to human health. The food of animal origin, including fish, is the main source of exposure to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCB), commonly called dioxin and non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (ndl-PCB). The aim of the study was to compare bioaccumulation of 29 dioxin congeners and 6 of ndl-PCBs in Baltic sea and freshwater fish. The pollution of Baltic and freshwater fish by PCDD, PCDF, dl-PCB and ndl-PCB was studied throughout years 2006-2009. Analysis of 113 samples of Baltic fish (herring, salmon and sprat) and 40 samples of farmed freshwater fish (carp and trout) were carried out To measure the concentrations, high resolution gaś chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC-HRMS) was utilized. Mass spectrometer with resolution over 10 000 allows for the identification and quantification of dioxins and related compounds at the level of 0.01 pg/g. The study results have showed that dioxins, furans and PCBs are present in higher concentrations in Baltic than in the freshwater fish. Dioxin levels are more than l .4 times higher, furans l O times, dl-PCBs over 13 times and ndl-PCBs 12 times higher in the sea fish. The dominant dioxin congeners in Baltic fish were OCDD, 1,2,3,7,8 PeCDD and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8 HpCDD, while in freshwater fish OCDD and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8 HpCDD. Furan congeners dominating in both groups were 2,3,7,8 TCDF, 2,3,4,7,8 PeCDF and OCDF in Baltic fish additionally. Among the dioxin-like PCB congeners PCB-105 and PCB-118 were in the highest concentration while among the non-dioxin-like PCBs: PCB-138and 153. Average concentration of ndl-PCBs in Baltic fish was about 25 ng/g while in freshwater fish 2.1 ng/g. Using toxic equivalency factor (WHO-TEF1998), the content of PCDD/F in Baltic fish expressed in WHO-TEQ was approaching the action level, which for fish is 3 pg/g fresh weight. Significantly higher accumulation of dioxinsin Baltic fish was due to their presence in the polluted aquatic environment.

Opis:
W Europie prowadzono wiele badań nad zanieczyszczeniem dioksynami i PCB ryb pochodzących z różnych rzek i akwenów. Badaniu poddano 48 próbek: leszcza (Abramis brama), sandacza (Sander lucioperca), szczupaka (Esox lucius), bolenia (Aspius aspius), płoci (Rutilus rutilus), okonia (Perca fluviatilis), złowionych w pięciu rzekach i jeziorach w Polsce: rzekach Wkrze (Żuromin), Brdzie (Człuchów), Wiśle (Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki i Kraków), Zbiorniku Rybnickim (Rybnik) oraz Jeziorze Łańskim (Olsztyn). Badania wykonano w ramach projektu badawczo-rozwojowego NCBR nr 12-0127-10/2010.
Dioxins are a group of organochlorine compounds which are toxic to humans. This group includes seven congeners polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), ten polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF), and twelve dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCB). The main source of exposure for humans is the food of animal origin (over 80%). Because fish are part of our diet, due to the safety and health of consumers, knowledge about their degree of pollution is very important. In Europe had many studies on pollution of dioxin and PCBs in fish from different rivers and water reservoirs. The lack of information on the level of concentrations of these compounds in fish originating from the Polish inland waters became one of the reasons for a research project, whose purpose is to define the levels of twenty nine congeners dioxins and PCBs in muscle of free-living fish. Forty nine samples of bream (Abramis brama), zander (Sander lucioperca), pike (Esox lucius), asp (Aspius Aspius), roach (Rutilus rutilus), perch (Perca fluviatilis) caught in Polish five rivers and reservoirs: the river Wkra (Zuromin), Brda (Czluchow), Vistula (Nowy Dwor Mazowiecki, and Cracow ), Rybnik Reservoir (Rybnik) and Lansk Lake (Olsztyn) were tested. Chemical analyzes were made using isotope dilution technique with high-resolution gas chromatograph and mass spectrometry detection (HRGC-HRMS). The results have showed there were no samples exceeding the maximum limits, which for the fish in accordance with Commission Regulation (EC) No. 1881/2006 of 19 December 2006 are set to 4 pg WHO-TEQ for PCDD/F and 8 pg WHO-TEQ for PCDD/F and dl-PCB per gram of fresh weight (f.w.). In waters classified as a clean: Brda, Wkra, Lanskie Lake, concentrations of compounds were very low, and were at the limit of quantification of the method, which is 0.13 pg WHO-TEQ/g f.w. for dioxins and furans and for the sum of 29 congeners 0.33 pg WHO-TEQ/g f.w. Potentially contaminated waters (the Vistula River and Rybnik Reservoir) concentrations of tested compounds were increased in varying degrees to the clean waters and depending on the place of collection of fish. PCDDs, PCDFs (Rybnik Reservoir) or dl-PCBs (Vistula River) were dominating compounds. The fish from the Vistula River the vicinity of Cracow, which contained the highest concentrations of tested compounds, dl-PCBs were found at concentrations of 1.06 ± 0.18 to 2.86 ± 0.48 pg WHO-TEQ/g f.w. The sum of all dioxin and dl-PCB congeners were in the range from 1.33 ± 0.22 to 3.49 ± 0.58 pg WHO-TEQ/g f.w. The elevated concentrations of dioxins in fish tissues from Vistula in Cracow and Nowy Dwor Mazowiecki vicinity as well as Rybnik Reservoir indicate contamination of the aquatic environment by dioxins and PCBs, and the existence of sources of these chemicals in the vicinity of fish collection.

In this study, the total mercury concentration was determined in the muscles, liver and gills of six fish species (rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss Walb., carp Cyprinus carpio L., bream Abramis brama L., perch Perca fluviatilis L., ide Leuciscus idus L. and flounder Platichthys flesus L.). The fish were acquired from October to November 2012. Mercury was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry using thermal decomposition, compounds of mercury and amalgamation. The mercury content in fish organs reached 0.006-0.168 (in mg kgˉ¹ wet weight) in muscles, 0.001-0.027 in gills and 0.003-0.045 in the liver. The muscles of perch and ide had significantly more Hg compared to the other fish’s muscles (P≤0.05). The liver and gills of perch, ide and flounder contained more Hg than the same tissues of the other fish (P≤0.05). Generally, the highest Hg content was determined in muscles (except rainbow trout) (P≤0.05), whereas the lowest Hg content was found in gills (except perch) (P≤0.05). The content of Hg in gills of perch did not differ from the one in the liver (P>0.05). There was a positive correlation between the weight or length of a fish and the Hg concentration in its tissues, except for the length and Hg in the gills of carp. However, a statistically significant positive correlation between the body weight and the Hg levels in fish appeared only in the case of the organs of ide (P≤0.004) and muscles of carp (P≤0.038). The correlation between the factor condition and the content of Hg, albeit positive (0.106 < r < 0.811) except for the organs of flounder, was not statistically significant (P>0.05).

Opis:
A fish-infecting myxosporean was found in the urinary bladder of the teleostean Colomesus psittacus, collected from the Amazon River, Brazil. Specimens were sampled in three different periods: May and June, with water temperature ranging from 18–23ºC; August, with water temperature ranging from 24–28ºC; and November and December, with water temperature ranging from 29–32ºC. Upon observation, several fish displayed abnormal behaviour, consisting of erratic movements, and mortality was recorded among them. Necropsy of all sampled fishes revealed hypertrophy of the urinary bladder only among specimens previously displaying the irregular behaviour. Microscopic analysis of this organ confirmed the parasitic infection, resulting in the observation of spores floating free in the urine, and numerous plasmodia attached to the epithelium of the urinary bladder. Light and ultrastructural studies allowed recognition of the spores and plasmodia morphological characteristics. Coelozoic plasmodia were polysporic with varying organizational structure, according to the sampling period. Spores were equilaterally triangular with rounded ends in valvar view, measuring 8.8 ± 0.4 μm (n = 30) in length and 8.4 ± 0.5 μm (n = 30) in width, and displaying a ridge surface pattern. Two polar capsules were observed in the anterior end of the spores, measuring 3.1–3.2 μm in diameter. The spores were morphologically identified as belonging to the recently described genus Triangulamyxa. Further observation and comparison to the morphological features described for Triangulamyxa amazonica, the only other species within this genus, allowed us to conclude our parasite as a new species, herein named Triangulamyxa psittaca sp. nov. from the Amazon River, Brazil. Also, three different stages were distinguished in the plasmodium evolution, based on the observed morphological features at the three sampling periods. Fish sampled during May and June displayed small plasmodia (up to ~ 15–20 μm long), containing early stages of sporogenic development. Fish sampled during November and December presented larger plasmodia (up to ~ 850 μm long), which appeared flattened against and lining the urinary bladder epithelial cells and contained the later stages of sporogenic development, including some mature spores. Fish sampled during August presented plasmodia displaying intermediate morphological features between those observed in infected fish from the other sampling periods. Several immature and mature spores were among the different developmental stages. The parasite-host interface evolution is described throughout the different observed stages, with emphasis on the formation of septate junctions. Considering several previous reports, as well as the different environmental conditions during the sampling periods, the plasmodium development here described appears to be influenced by environmental factors, namely water temperature.

Opis:

Opis:
The nucleic acid content in different tissues such as brain, liver, kidney & testis of both control and copper sulphate (CuSO4) exposed freshwater fish N. notopterus has been studied. The following observation is made in both control and copper sulphate (CuSO4) exposed fish. The testis contain large amount of DNA in comparison to other tissues. The degree of DNA content in control and copper sulphate (CuSO4) exposed fish testis >liver>brain>kidney. The RNA content also exhibited similar to that of DNA, having higher amount in the testis. The degree of RNA content in control and copper sulphate (Cuso4) exposed fish testis >liver>brain>kidney. The nucleic acid content of tissues get reduced under copper sulphate (CuSO4) exposed in the male freshwater fish N. notopterus indicating copper sulphate as a pollutant effect the nucleic acid content in the tissue.
