Opis:
The literary works discussed in this article exploit the motif of Fryderyk Chopin and his oeuvre in a variety of ways. The earliest novel is Lucrezia Floriani (1846), penned by the French writer George Sand, Chopin’s companion. The creation of Prince Karol (Chopin’s name in the novel), as if “detached” from the Polish composer’s biography, is an interesting, although none too original (even within the context of Sand’s oeuvre) example of the Romantic hero. Popular output, aimed at a readership seeking above all scandal and emotion, is represented by the German writer Hermann Richter’s novel Drei Frauen um Chopin (1935) and the contemporary thriller of collective authorship The Chopin Manuscript (2008). In these works, the composer is a tool designed to give readers the illusion of becoming acquainted with his biography or to interest sensation-seekers. Artistically the most interesting novel is Preludes, by the Danish writer Peer Hultberg (1989). Besides its original artistic form, the author is the only one to deal with musical material, attempting to present in prose that which ought to form the heart of every work about the brilliant musician, but which was achieved only by Cyprian Norwid in Fortepian Szopena [Chopin’s piano].

Opis:
The works of Simone de Beauvoir – an intellectual writer, an icon of feminism, and a representative of existentialism – explore the issues of gender identity and femininity. This article reflects on the writings of the author, which reveal the otherness of a woman who asserts her right to be present in culture. Her works also stress independence and autonomy. Beauvoir’s largely autobiographical texts express a search for identity by a woman with strong social and political commitments, who fought against injustice, intolerance, and wars, defending the rights of women and the human dignity. Through her critique of the bourgeoisie Beauvoir manifested her need for freedom, identified with her occupation. Aware of the limitations attributed to her sex, Beauvoir draws the portrait of a courageous woman with unrestricted identity. These works remain valid even outside the academic discourse owing to their constant emphasis on creation, independence, and individualism as well as revealing exposures. Self-creation provides an interesting perspective on today’s humanities and inspires women’s writing in the 21st century.

The oral character inherent to a theatre and the hybrid or multilingual character of modern French Canadian literature invests it with functions that pertain strictly to the spoken word and that translator must take into account. This paper examines translation strategies proposed and applied in English and Standard-French translations of the play "Le Chien", written by Franco-Ontarian playwright Jean-Marc Dalpé. In the play "Le Chien" the hybrid character of language and abundance of swearwords constitutes a symptom of inability to communicate of protagonists and animality of their discourse. This specificity, crucial in terms of interpretation of the play, is the major obstacle in translator’s work because he needs to target the specific, English and French-speaking audience which is unilingual and doesn’t have the same cultural experience.

Opis:
On the basis of two indecidable texts (Thomas Clerc, “Paris, musée du XXIe siècle. Le dixième arrondissement”, Gallimard 2007 and Philippe Vasset, “Un livre blanc”, Fayard 2007), we will reflect on new approaches to the city in contemporary French litterature. Clerc and Vasset, in their respective texts, suggest considering litterature as a series of practices connected with the exploration of the city (Clerc) and of the urban area (Vasset) according to the idea of an arbitrary itinerary. The image of the city whose space, subject to a permanent process of museification, is constantly considered to be a work of art (Clerc) contrasts with a project of viewing the deserted areas of the city and of its surroundings as an infinite collection of “artistic installations” created in daily life (Vasset). Clerc’s and Vasset’s artistic mentality leads them to the fascination with “works of involuntary art”, both concrete signs and tangible proof of the transitional period which they try to describe systematically, following, at the same time, the principles of an axonometric city map.

Opis:
In “My heart laid bare” Baudelaire writes about the “Universal Religion” devised for “the alchemists of thought,” “a religion that comes from man, considered as a divine memento.” The idea, as we read in the text, was inspired by the writings of Chateaubriand, De Maistre and those of the “Alexandrians”. And indeed, the two former authors wrote explicitly about a „universal tradition” that finds its fulfillment in the Catholic religion. It does not matter if we recognize the “Alexandrians” as representatives of the Neoplatonic school, the Alexandrian Fathers of Church, or disciples of Hermetism, the very term implies a tradition of both syncretic and mystic character that resembles gnosis. Baudelaire’s “Universal Religion,” despite his Catholic convictions, cannot be associated with Catholicism. Based on a universal transmission of myths and symbols, it rather refers to eternal truths about man as well as to the divine source of all beings – also in the modern world, which puts God’s existence in doubt.

Presented in the translation into Polish, Jacques Chaplain’s review is a fragmentary overview of the three volume monograph by a world-known physicist Emmanuel Desurvire , devoted to his ancestor, Karol Edmund Chojecki (1822–1899). This Polish emigrant of the era of Romanticism, known in France under the pseudonym Charles Edmond, was presented from the side of various, closer or further relationships with the representatives of French culture, science and politics of that time (such as Gustave Flaubert , Goncourt brothers, Pierre Joseph Proudhon or Georges Clemenceau ), as well as his own creative achievements (in the fi elds of playwriting, dramaturgy, publicism and art of translation). Source materials — family archives and other documents that were not printed before, abundantly collected by the French biographer, shed new light on of this interesting person and his vicissitudesof life.

Desurvire’s work — of impressive size and substantive content — has been currently published for the second time. The objective of the article is to compare two stories about journeys to Poland – graphic novel We won’t see Auschwitz of Jérémie Dres and a short novel of Henri Raczymow – Ten « polish » days. The author tries to analyse two diff erent ways of building a jewish memory of French immigrants during their visit and to compare two perceptions of Warsaw, Cracov and « jewish emptiness ». The results of this analysis allow to make important remarks about transgenerational transformations in memory structure.

Opis:
In France the 1820s and 1830s brought about enormous changes in the perception of literature and art as a whole. Young poets, encouraged by the success and novelty of Méditations poétiques by Alphonse de Lamartine, started seeking new possibilities of expression and ways of breaking with the several-centuries-old tradition. They met with a strong protest from conservative milieu, especially those linked to Académie française, and this made them fight for a new paradigm in literature. They eagerly experimented with language as sound (Lamartine, Sainte-Beuve) and graphic (Nodier) matter. They published their texts in the press (Le Globe) and presented them during meetings in artistic salons, which functioned as a kind of laboratory. Thanks to the support of Charles Nodier they could publish their poems in the best publishing houses, which largely contributed to their success. The final victory of the romantics was the premiere of Hernani by Victor Hugo in February 1830. Franz Liszt, who came to Paris in 1823, was an active participant in the artistic and intellectual life there. Moreover, he was also a friend of many prominent artists of the epoch, which can be seen in his letters, writings, and piano music from the early 1830s. A particular example of the relationship between the composer’s music and literary avant-garde is the piece Harmonies poétiques et religieuses of 1835. We find there the domination of the sound element, formal freedom, the intertwining of poetical techniques, experiments with structure, and a strong stress on the word aspect of the oeuvre, for example through very precise notation of tempo markings.

It appears that both insulars and travelling authors have interpreted the insular culture through their own depictions. These testimonies lead to cultural cross-fertilization. These diverse perspectives are an opportunity for enrichment of the islands’ cultures and a chance for them to preserve their heritage. Literacy is both a witness and a keeper of a culture. However, can the author, a sociologist, provide an objective view of the observed culture? If, in “Bildungsromans”, the influence of the land on the individual is obvious, the plurality of cultures is also observed within persons. This plurality of culture creates an open mindedness in each individual, which threatens the loss of his unique identity. Maintaining an insular culture may be the only way to delay its globalization.

The purpose of this paper is to attempt to answer the question of how the interpretation of the main character in The Stranger by Albert Camus as „an animal in the human skin” can be applied to understanding the actions of the character in the world. The next question posed is whether Camus describes Meursault literally as an animal or refers to the character symbolically. The author argues that such an extreme treatment of „the animality” of the character is useless in the broader context of this book since Meursault has a human nature which proves the complexity of his mental processes.

Opis:
The article comprehensively presents French art and literature in a socio-cultural weekly magazine that was published between 1944 and 1950, and that was considered to be one of the most prominent magazines in post-war Poland. Its widespread reach and open attitude towards culture that was reflected in “Odrodzenie” (contrary to Marxist approach represented in “Kuźnica”) influenced opinion-forming processes greatly and also shaped new literary canon. It was edited by Karol Kuryluk followed by Jerzy Borejsza — both editors had been genuinely involved in French culture since youth, hence the presence of writers and artists from that circle was explicit. Considering the amount of texts, “Odrodzenie” consisted mostly of Russian literature and also of French literature, that, having more artistic value, was ahead of English and Italian writings. Those proportions were also influenced by Aragon, Picasso and Eluard who were leftist and who were close friends with Kuryluk and Borejsza. Those connections were natural for both editors and they confirmed particular place that Poland took on the verge of Western and Eastern cultures. The transition that started to happen around 1948 and the processes that inhibited artistic freedom lead to a shift in the attitude towards Western culture which also included French culture. The beginning of Social Realism terminated artistic freedom and ended the publishing of “Odrodzenie” that was then perceived as too liberal. The magazine had printed classic writings by authors such as Diderot, Hugo, then-forgotten symbolists such as Verlaine, Rimbaud, and also by current writers that were gradually recognized in Polish culture.

14 is a recently published novel by a French contemporary writer, Jean Echenoz. Having the First World War as its core subject, the text covers the main traditional themes of war novels. Its interest, however, does not lie in what it says about the war, but rather in how the war is told. In fact, 14 points out the main horrors of the war, without engaging in pathos. In order to do so, Echenoz resorts to two groups of techniques, whose main purpose is to lighten the dramatic effect of the war scenes depicted. Surprisingly, the result is a text which recounts the crude horrors of war.
