Opis:
The reception of Chopin and his music in French literature follows the rhythm of the changes in the European intellectual and aesthetic climates. George Sand recorded in her memoirs the image of a romantic genius par excellence, a dark, torn and complicated soul. The decadent and symbolist poetry, best exemplified by Maurice Rollinat, presents a portrait ofa blood-spitting neurasthenic, a soulmate of the poet. Marcel Proust paints the image of an elegant dandy and exquisite artist, while the first part of the twentieth century is dominated by the neoromantic vision of Chopin as a great Polish patriot; this theme is perfectly illustrated by the poems of Anna de Noailles and Edmond Rostand. André Gide presents a radicallynew view of Chopin’s music, seeing the Polish composer as a neoclassicist pianist. Contemporary literature and art go on to dress Chopin in jeans, eagerly turning him into a mass culture hero.

The article deals with the problem of establishing the criteria to define the notion of discourse. It contains an analysis of the contemporary French feminine novels according to those criteria which leads to the conclusion that they are an expression of a pluralistic literary discourse. The article also presents a survey of different approaches to the notion of the strategy and specifies the leading ones inside the present discourse.

Opis:
Paul Valéry (1871–1945), the great French poet and essayist, did not finished his last work Mon Faust, however it was published after his death. It is poetic and philosophical drama in two parts. The story of the eponymous hero takes place in our times. Unlike in Johann Wolfgang Goethe,s Faust, the devil, not a man, is here tempted. It is obvious, because for Valéry the devil is not attractive enough to be the tempter par excellence. The unknown God is probably absent in the modern world, whereas man is lonely, tormented uncertainty. Mon Faust has not been translated into Polish, however, it is performed in theaters around the world from time to time.

In the article an attempt has been undertaken to analyse two poems: Gypsies on the Road (Bohémiens en voyage) by Charles Baudelaire and Gypsies (Zigeuner) by Georg Trakl. The Gypsies are an ethnic group whose existence is marked by the never-ending wandering. Changing places of residence, they are confronted with symbols of the Antique and the Christian culture. Though the world of the European civilisation offers them its values, the Gypsies hold to their own tradition that gives them happiness and safeness.

Antoine Volodine and Christian Garcin both make a distinctive use of shamanism in fictional novels. By multiplying shaman characters and intertwining the shamanistic principles and the narrative, they develop a poetic of instability noticeable through various hybridization processes notably strengthened by the intrusion of supernatural elements. The analysis of three motives in which this game of unstable balance is particularly mirrored – identity, History and fiction – shall turn our attention to the role of shamanism as a vector of fictional dynamism.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to attempt to answer the question of how the interpretation of the main character in The Stranger by Albert Camus as „an animal in the human skin” can be applied to understanding the actions of the character in the world. The next question posed is whether Camus describes Meursault literally as an animal or refers to the character symbolically. The author argues that such an extreme treatment of „the animality” of the character is useless in the broader context of this book since Meursault has a human nature which proves the complexity of his mental processes.

Opis:
The article addresses the issue of one of the parts of rhetoric – memory (memoria) in relation to fine arts (beaux-arts), a term invented by Charles Batteux. In the classical understanding of the rhetorical discourse, memoria is a set of rules allowing the speaker to remember his speech and then to deliver it in the best possible way. In terms of aesthetics and art, the mentioned term takes on many new meanings, to the extent that Diderot’s Encyclopedia does not use it at all. In order to explain the role of memory as a creative process, the French theoreticians of the Age of Enlightenment (Batteux, Dubos, Voltaire) use many other terms, which only shows the complexity of the term memoria. The aim of the article is to show the adaptation of the rhetorical term to the area of poetics and theory of art, and to present how this rhetorical concept becomes one of the foundations of the fine arts.

Opis:
In this paper, our analysis will focus on the concept of stereotype based on the notion of “bêtise” (stupidity) that French essayist and novelist Belinda Cannone deplores. We will study how she rethinks the “bêtise”, after Flaubert who defined it as the art of wanting to conclude. In La bêtise s’améliore (2007) Cannone gives the example of Flaubert, making the “bêtise” the doxa that touches all areas of social life. The central element of “bêtise”, according to Belinda Cannone, remains in many respects conformism. It is a question of seeing how, in Cannone’s discourse, these two notions – “bêtise” and conformism – are articulated and allow her to redefine her ethos of the engaged intellectual in the public space.

Simone de Beauvoir, gender identity, existentialism, feminism, French literature
Opis:
The works of Simone de Beauvoir – an intellectual writer, an icon of feminism, and a representative of existentialism – explore the issues of gender identity and femininity. This article reflects on the writings of the author, which reveal the otherness of a woman who asserts her right to be present in culture. Her works also stress independence and autonomy. Beauvoir’s largely autobiographical texts express a search for identity by a woman with strong social and political commitments, who fought against injustice, intolerance, and wars, defending the rights of women and the human dignity. Through her critique of the bourgeoisie Beauvoir manifested her need for freedom, identified with her occupation. Aware of the limitations attributed to her sex, Beauvoir draws the portrait of a courageous woman with unrestricted identity. These works remain valid even outside the academic discourse owing to their constant emphasis on creation, independence, and individualism as well as revealing exposures. Self-creation provides an interesting perspective on today’s humanities and inspires women’s writing in the 21st century.

Opis:
Although they made their spectacular literary appearance with the arrival of Romanticism, vampires were arousing a vivid interest well before the 19th century. At first, the present paper will briefly review the vampire motif in French texts from the second half of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th c., such as the articles published in Mercure Galant in 1793 and 1794 or the travel narratives published by François Richard (1657), Paul Lucas (1704) and Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1717). Afterwards, Traité sur les apparitions des esprits et sur les vampires ou les revenants de Hongrie, de Moravie, etc. [Treatise on the Apparitions of Spirits and on Vampires or Revenants of Hungary, Moravia, et al.] (1751) by Dom Augustin Calmet (1672-1757) will be analyzed in order to examine the way in which the Benedictine tackles this controversial subject in his book. The article closes with some thoughts on the reception of the treatise after its publication and its importance for the creation and consolidation of the subsequent concept of the vampire.

During the 19th century, Giuseppe Mazzini communicated to his contemporaries the feeling of a strong hostility against France, to defend his project of emancipation of Italy (and Europe) from French tutelage. So he decided to choose other models and other examples, in European literature, that could serve as a guide and reference point. In particular, he was influenced by Polish poets, who convinced him that poetry could animate the “Europe of the people” and guide them to achieve the major objectives of the “new epoch”. Polish literature is the origin of Mazzini’s exaltation of Risorgimento poetry and constituted a positive reference point to counter the decline and loss of influence of French culture.

In this article the author argues that in the works of Camus people are particularly associated with vegetation. Joanna Roś analyzes the selected passages from the three literary works by Albert Camus, successively proving that: in The first man the fun with a palm tree is a symbol of passion for life, which is inextricably linked with nature as a model of survival; in Happy death vegetation teaches the hero that what would dishonor him as a man is the desire of death, denial of life; and Camus, presenting in The Minotaur or The Stop in Oran this city as a place where vegetation is masked, shows how this space devoid of vegetation urges a man to seek a counterbal-ance in a wild nature.

Opis:
Over the years Annie Ernaux has been trying to deal with the theme of her father’s death. And yet she could not find the appropriate form to express a specific distance that emergedat some point when her father was still alive. By experimenting with various novel literary forms she came to a realization that only the departure from fiction would allow her to convey a kind of “truth” about her father and this unique distance (supposedly attributable to her leaving the social class she had been born and raised in). Consequently, Ernaux decides to reject “literature” and to write an autobiographical piece in the first person, which is somehow flat because it is stripped of all rhetoric layers. In this article I endeavour to show that a deeply engraved thirst for telling the truth about one’s father simultaneously becomes a story about one’s ambitions and about seeking one’s identity. Primarily, however, A Man’s Place is a story about searching for one’s own form of expression and growing up to writing.
