The aim of this article ist to reveal the Chateaubriand´s arguments in favor of the catholicism and of the pope´s power. We try to rediscover his vision of the Church and the meaning he give to it in the public life. We would like also to emphasize the importance of the liberty, typical of this writer.

Opis:
The article traces the problem of relations between the older and younger generations, in line with national traditions influence the fate of a single individual. On the example of the heroes of the early XIX century French writer G. de Staël shows that the choice between following "the precepts of his father's" personal feelings and can often lead to tragedy. In the novel Corinne, or Italy, heard the call to deal with public opinion and national prejudices, which will undoubtedly lead to the improvement and renewal of any society, as well as to mutual understanding between the generations.

Our article talk (once again) about the literary history; it calls into question the relationship, not very good, between the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and the French writer Madame de Staël in the early nineteenth century. Devoid of all civic and political rights, like all women at that time, Madame de Staël has established herself before the most important statesman of Europe by her intelligence and by the great power of her writings.

Opis:
The article’s goal is an inquiry into the main contexts, in Polish and French Romanticism, for the metaphor of black sun; the metaphor belongs with images and themes clearly marked by the experience of melancholia. There was also a significant impact of astronomical fantasies which, perhaps surprisingly, were very popular in Romanticism. Another important reference point for the present text analysis is the Biblical tradition (related mainly to Old Testament books and The Revelation). However, it must be stressed that the popularity of the metaphor of black sun, both in France and in Poland, was undoubtedly fostered by the popularity of Dürer’s print Melancholia I, and Jean-Paul Richter’s famous Speech of the Dead Christ. In works by selected authors, who represent the two language areas under discussion (including Gautier, Nerval, Słowacki, and Krasiński), it is possible to notice significant differences, which allow for asserting the existence of a different model of dissemination of the image of black sun. Inasmuch as French Romantics mostly approach the image in aesthetic and existential terms, the Polish authors clearly focus on metaphysical and historiographical approaches. It is also important that contrary to Biblical sources, where the image of black sun was often related to God’s wrath or his intervention in earthly order, as in Last Judgement, and contrary to astronomical sources, which eliminated individual perspective and clearly strived for objective approach, the metaphor of black sun in texts by Romantic authors is mostly of anthropological quality; it is an image of the human being confronted by individually experienced transience (in the existential model, closer to French Romantics), or in confrontation with time of a community (historiosophic model, which dominates in texts by Polish Romantics).

Opis:
The 19th century, particularly in the conceptions of the evolution of humanity by Ballanche, Leroux or Quinet, seems to highlight the idea of freedom in its struggle with fatality, whether the latter is identified with natural forces or with social order rooted in political and economic reality. Indeed, the three mentioned authors conceive the destinies of humanity as a progressive emancipation. The purpose of this article is to study, following a comparative method oriented on the history of ideas, how the relationship between freedom and fatality is articulated in each of them. While the works of Ballanche, Leroux and Quinet present numerous analogies with regard to the process of emancipation of humanity, that of Quinet is distinguished by his idea of a secular State separated from the Churches, which is the final transformation of the religious principle.

Opis:
This paper considers French ecclesiastical rhetoric in the Romantic era, focusing on Lacordaire’s and Lamennais’ contrasting views on the role of eloquence in religious discourse. It argues that Lacordaire, despite employing secular language in his Conférences remains a classicist religious orator, whereas Lammenais expresses his deep distrust of the spoken word and condemns eloquence, turning to letters and political discourse. The comparison of the two concepts can be seen as an exemplification of the transition from littérature-discours to littérature-texte, a general phenomenon in the French Romantic literature as described by Alain Vaillant.

Opis:
During the 19th century, Giuseppe Mazzini communicated to his contemporaries the feeling of a strong hostility against France, to defend his project of emancipation of Italy (and Europe) from French tutelage. So he decided to choose other models and other examples, in European literature, that could serve as a guide and reference point. In particular, he was influenced by Polish poets, who convinced him that poetry could animate the “Europe of the people” and guide them to achieve the major objectives of the “new epoch”. Polish literature is the origin of Mazzini’s exaltation of Risorgimento poetry and constituted a positive reference point to counter the decline and loss of influence of French culture.

My aim in writing about Pièce Héroïque of César Franck is to discuss the aspects of interpretation, and to cite various recordings, books, papers, my own experience of organ studies with Mme Odile Pierre in Paris and the numerous times that I have performed this composition in a variety of musical situations. Another point of discussion will be attaining a spirit of Romanticism rather than a literal reading of the score when dealing with non-French organs. You will need a copy of the Durand edition of 1883 for this discussion, and having measure numbers marked ahead of time will be helpful.

Opis:
In France the 1820s and 1830s brought about enormous changes in the perception of literature and art as a whole. Young poets, encouraged by the success and novelty of Méditations poétiques by Alphonse de Lamartine, started seeking new possibilities of expression and ways of breaking with the several-centuries-old tradition. They met with a strong protest from conservative milieu, especially those linked to Académie française, and this made them fight for a new paradigm in literature. They eagerly experimented with language as sound (Lamartine, Sainte-Beuve) and graphic (Nodier) matter. They published their texts in the press (Le Globe) and presented them during meetings in artistic salons, which functioned as a kind of laboratory. Thanks to the support of Charles Nodier they could publish their poems in the best publishing houses, which largely contributed to their success. The final victory of the romantics was the premiere of Hernani by Victor Hugo in February 1830. Franz Liszt, who came to Paris in 1823, was an active participant in the artistic and intellectual life there. Moreover, he was also a friend of many prominent artists of the epoch, which can be seen in his letters, writings, and piano music from the early 1830s. A particular example of the relationship between the composer’s music and literary avant-garde is the piece Harmonies poétiques et religieuses of 1835. We find there the domination of the sound element, formal freedom, the intertwining of poetical techniques, experiments with structure, and a strong stress on the word aspect of the oeuvre, for example through very precise notation of tempo markings.
