    Due to denazification regulations in the first years after World War II, former Nazi party members were excluded from any form of official political life in the reborn republic. Therefore, to break that isolation, they decided to team up with two liberal journalists, Herbert Kraus and Viktor Reimann, who advocated lifting any restrictors targeted at this social group mainly to prevent the growth of their hostility towards the reborn republic and to facilitate reconciliation between victims of the Third Reich and their oppressors. Finally, in 1949 the party Federation of Independents (VdU) under leadership of Kraus was founded. One of its main goal was to represent the interests of former Nazis. The party managed to win seats in National Council, but soon after its foundation, an internal confl ict between liberals and German nationalists began. That undermined its position severely. In consequence, in 1956 VdU merged with Freedom Party, which led to the establishment of a rightwing populist party Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ). Until today FPÖ plays an important role in the Austrian political life.

    The research objective of this paper is to analyse European programmes of the right wing, populist Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and the left wing, populist German Left Party (Die Linke), to present their 2014 election campaigns for the European Parliament, and also to assess the activities undertaken by Members of the European Parliament of these political groups on the forum of the eighth EP. The reflections presented in this work were divided into four parts. First, the analysis of a large body of literature referring to populism is made and selected concepts for indicating the characteristic features of populist groups are proposed. Next, the European programmes of the Freedom Party of Austria and the German Left party are analysed. Then, the main subjects around which the political campaign to the EP of right- and left-wing populists was concentrated are indicated. In the third part, the analysis covers the EP election results and the voter support gained by the respective groups in relation to previous European elections in which both populist groups participated. Finally, the fourth part of the paper lists the areas of ac- tivities and the tools for parliamentary work used by the MEPs from FPÖ and the Left Party, including an assessment of their influence on the policy of the current EP.

    The election of the head of state in Austria in 2016 was in many ways a breakthrough and its course was surprising. Norbert Hofer, a right-wing populist candidate of the Freedom Party of Austria, made it to the second round of presidential election. Technical problems related to the organisation of the presidential election postponed the final decision until December 2016. The aim of this article is to present the main elements of the populist narrative propagated by the FPÖ during the election campaign. The party reached for a well-known arsenal of means, trying to convince voters to their candidate. It underlined the protection of national identity, the defence of the interests of Austria in the European Union, declarations of strengthening the position of president and the inclusion of the people in the governing through direct democracy. The populist rhetoric recurred as well to its permanent elements: criticism of the establishment and the conspiracy theory of the Austrian elite aiming to prevent or postpone the victory of a FPÖ candidate.

    Nowadays, Austria is facing significant challenges in implementing integrational policy towards immigrants It’s basic assumption is to enethe economic inclusion as soon as possible. On the other hand, the integration program generates quite high costs, and this fact is repeatedly used in public discussion. The emerging soccismscepticism towards immigration has become one of the reasons for the electoral success of the far right, which is considered to be the anti-immigrant Freedom Party of Austria. The article undertakes an analysis of a selected topic, including several aspects: the attitude of political parties towards the so-called immigration issues, the nature of election campaigns and government initiatives on Austria’s immigration policy. On the other hand, the questions raised in the paper concern the following issunce whenidis the change in the nature of public discussion in Austria come about, under what influence have the factors of anti-immigrant rhetoric intensified and what are the effects of such rhetoric? Another important issue is whether nly Freedom Party of Austria remains the only carrier of such rhetoric.
    Współcześnie w Austrii realizowana jest polityka integracyjna. Podstawowym jej założeniem jest jak najszybsza ekonomiczna inkluzja imigrantów. Program integracji cudzoziemców generuje dość duże koszty, a fakt ten coraz częściej wykorzystywany jest w publicznej dyskusji. Pojawiający się sceptycyzm społeczny wobec imigracji stał się jedną z przyczyn sukcesów wyborczych skrajnie prawicowej, uchodzącej za antyimigrancką Wolnościowej Partii Austrii. W artykule podjęto analizę wybranego tematu z uwzględnieniem kilku aspektów: stosunku partii politycznych wobec tzw. kwestii imigranckiej, charakteru kampanii wyborczych oraz inicjatyw rządowych dotyczących polityki imigracyjnej Austrii. Postawione pytania dotyczą natomiast następujących kwestii: od kiedy mamy do czynienia ze zmianą charakteru publicznej dyskusji w Austrii, pod wpływem jakich czynników antyimigrancka retoryka uległa intensyfikacji oraz jakie są skutki takiej retoryki? Istotną pozostaje również kwestia czy nośnikiem takiej retoryki pozostaje wyłącznie Wolnościowa Partia Austrii.

    This article examines the political consequences of the biggest government crisis in the history of the Second Republic of Austria. This ensued after the media revealed in May 2019, the corruption in the activity of the Freedom Party of Austria. The video sting scandal, dubbed Ibiza-gate, has shaken Austria, prompted the collapse of the coalition between the Austrian People’s Party and Freedom Party of Austria, and subsequently brought down the government after the National Council had voted no-confidence to Sebastian Kurz’s cabinet. In this article, a hypothesis is put forward that the scandal has strengthened the Christian Democrats’ position on the Austrian political scene, despite opposition criticism that ÖVP, which decided to cooperate with the extreme right, is co-responsible for the political crisis.
    W artykule ukazano polityczne konsekwencje największego w historii II Republiki Austrii kryzysu rządowego, który był następstwem ujawnienia w maju 2019r. przez media korupcyjnych propozycji składanych przez polityków Wolnościowej Partii Austrii. Afera taśmowa nazywana „Ibiza-gate” wstrząsnęła Austrią, doprowadziła do rozpadu koalicji Austriackiej Partii Ludowej i Wolnościowej Partii Austrii, a następnie do upadku rządu Sebastiana Kurza w wyniku wyrażenia przez Radę Narodową wotum nieufności. W artykule przyjęto hipotezę, że skandal umocnił pozycję chadecji na austriackiej scenie politycznej i to mimo krytyki ze strony partii opozycyjnych, że ÖVP która podjęła się współpracy ze skrajną prawicą, jest współodpowiedzialna za kryzys polityczny.

    Celem artykułu jest analiza rozległych polityczno-kulturowych skutków wywołanych w Austrii przez europejski kryzys imigracyjny, a w szczególności – jego wpływu na wyniki wyborów do tamtejszych sejmów krajowych w 2015 r. oraz przeprowadzonych rok później wyborów prezydenckich. Badania opinii publicznej pokazują, iż w 2015 r. doszło w tym państwie do dramatycznego wzrostu negatywnego stosunku do imigrantów i uchodźców. Miało to ogromny wpływ na krajową scenę polityczną: prawicowa populistyczna Austriacka Partia Wolnościowa (FPÖ) zdołała odnieść ogromny sukces we wszystkich czterech wyborach do sejmów krajowych przeprowadzonych w 2015 r. w Austrii. W opinii autora za radykalizację austriackiego społeczeństwa odpowiedzialny jest nie obecny europejski kryzys imigracyjny, ale raczej kombinacja innych czynników, takich jak obawa o pogorszenie się wysokiego standardu życia w konsekwencji procesów globalizacyjnych i ksenofobiczny stosunek znaczącej części austriackiego społeczeństwa do setek tysięcy cudzoziemców, którzy w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach napłynęli do Austrii. Owi obcokrajowcy postrzegani są jako zagrożenie dla krajowego rynku pracy, rosnące obciążenie dla budżetu federalnego, a także zagrożenie dla austriackiej tożsamości narodowej.
    The aim of this article is to analyze the excessive political-cultural consequences of the European migration crisis in Austria, especially its impact on the results of state elections held in that country in 2015 and presidential election held in 2016. The research shows that in 2015 the dramatic growth of negative stances towards immigrants and refugees took place in the Austrian society. This had a very important impact on the national political scene, as a right-wing populist party, namely Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) managed to achieve a great electoral success in all four state elections held in 2015 in Austria, detriment of other, moderate, political parties. According to the opinion of the author, rather than the current refugee crisis, the combination of other factors is responsible for the radicalization of Austrian society, such as: fear of worsening of a very high living standard due to globalization as well as a xenophobic attitude of signifi cant parts of the Austrian population towards hundreds of thousands of foreigners coming to Austria in the last decades. What is more, those foreigners are perceived as a threat for the domestic labour market, a growing burden on the federal budget as well as a threat for the Austrian national identity.
