Opis:
In November 1958, Michel Foucault arrived in Poland and became the first director of the French Cultural Centre at the University of Warsaw. He spent less than a year in Warsaw. Beside his work at the Centre and interactions with the world of culture and science, Foucault was also meeting boys. With some he was just friends, with others he was involved emotionally and erotically. Foucault had a particular relationship with Jurek. After all, Jurek collaborated with the secret service, and led to the situation in which the police entered the hotel room and caught the lovers. Homosexuality was not illegal in Poland, nevertheless Foucault was forced to leave the country. The author of the article Michel Foucault. Surveillance (who has recently published a reportage book Foucault in Warsaw) uncovered the identity of Jurek and reconstructed the daily life of Michel Foucault in Warsaw. He also discovered the secret service files containing information about the homosexual groups in communist Poland which include records concerning Foucault. They reveal, among others, Foucault’s private address, his favourite cafés and night clubs, as well as details covering whom he met with and how did he spent his free time. The author also tracked down the living witnesses of Foucault's stay in Warsaw and interviewed them. These reminiscences reveal the personality of young Foucault. Remigiusz Ryziński’s text brings up these biographical reveries, commenting on Foucault’s perception of Poland as well as the many other of his liasons with the country.

Opisuje dysonans pomiędzy sferą idealizacyjną, teorią, założeniami instytucji kuratora, a sferą instrumentalną, praktyką, czyli sposobem sprawowania  nadzorów kuratorskich.

Opis:
The article analyzes the alienation of the main character of the manga series Death Note, who owns the Death Notebook referred to in the title. The said notebook allows to kill any person. Drawing upon the theses of Michel Foucault related to the rights of monarchs of bygone times to condemn individuals to death, and to ritualizing death itself, the author of the article shows Kira as a continuator of the said monarchs. The motif of death from the hands of another person is indicated as a form of revenge for harms suffered by one, based on considerations by Jean Baudrillard. The text also aims to show that comic books are not just entertainment for the masses, but can convey serious content instead.

Opis:
The subjectivity can be produced by the spaces; Foucault analyzed that in the hospital, the school and the prison. However, all of those places are legal. Based on that and inspired by the “spatial turn”, this text questions if only legal spaces can produce subjectivity or which other spaces can produce it as well. To answer the latter, it is exposed the legal spaces cannot be considered as the equivalent to “everywhere” due to the fact that there are other spaces that exist but are not visible from the legal perspective of the space or the spatial perspective of the legal. Then, I name the spaces that exist parallel to the legal spaces as infraspace. The infraspace is an (il)legal-a-legal space that works as the counterpart of the legal space and can produce subjectivity as well but in different terms. The infraspace is proposed as the space that complements the spatial possibilities that can produce subjectivity. Therefore, subjectivity can be produced by spaces that are legal, illegal or a-legal.

Opis:
This article draws from the work of Michel Foucault to reconstruct an understanding of social policy and ageing in contemporary Britain. In many ways, policy provides three trajectories for older people; first, as independent self-managing consumers with private means and resources; second, as people in need of some support to enable them to continue to self-manage and third, as dependent and unable to commit to self-management. Governmentality provides the theoretical framework through which to view policy and practice that is largely governed by discourses of personalisation.

Opis:
An honest intellectual dutifully standing with truth against lies and treacheries of his society is a parrhesiastic figure in Foucault’s terminology. Foucault takes parrhesia as the fearless and frank speech regarding the truth of something or a situation before truth-mongering and public deception and he takes the parrhesiastic as the spokesperson for truth. In this light, Dr. Stockmann in Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People occupies a unique position within Ibsen’s political philosophy. Dutifully criticizing what the majority blindly take for granted from their liar leaders in the name of democracy, Dr. Stockmann fulfills the role of a parrhesiastic figure that stands against socio-political corruption. He enters a parrhesiastic game with both the majority and the officialdom to fulfill his democratic parrhesia as a truthful citizen before the duped community, while covertly preparing for his own philosophic parrhesia or self-care within the conformist community. However, his final failure lies in his confrontation with democracy itself, which wrongly gives the right of speaking even to the liars. This article thus aims at analyzing Ibsen’s play through a Foucauldian perspective regarding the concept of parrhesia and its relation to democracy. It is to reveal Ibsen’s satire on the fake ideology of democracy and highlight the necessity of humanity’s parrhesiastic self-care for the well-being of the self and the others.

Opis:
There are places which create their own rituals and circumstances give them functions. The kindergarten seems to be such a place - "a different space". The object of my considerations, in which I applied the understanding of the specific kindergarten space as a “no-place in the place”, are the six principles defining Foucault's heterotopy. Considering each of them, I refer to preschool as an institution which, apart from implementing its basic goals focused on care and supporting child’s development, becomes a unique microcosm for every pupil.

The aim of the article is to analyse Foucault’s pedagogy of resistance that positions itself not against power but against the states of domination. The states of domination, being the states of coagulation, annihilate the flow of the power-freedom force. In the first part of the paper, the vital relation between freedom and power as well as two opposed modes of production of the subject are presented (passive subjection that is assujetissement and active subjectivisation that is subjectivation). The second part is devoted to the issue of being nobody. Therein, being nobody is conceived of as the situation that completely works for the flow of the power-freedom force and at the same time is directed against identity as one of the states of domination.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to outline the philosophical genealogy of pedagogical discourse based on Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish (1977). The undertaken line of inquiry posits this re ection in light of the presupposed question about the core of pedagogical discourse since although in the course of the continuous academic debate stemming from Foucault’s writings many insightful works have emerged with regard to the critical analysis of the educational system and the inner logic underlying the functioning mode of the schools, and although the critical approach appears to be fundamental in the contemporary humanities, the very discourse seems to face an inter-conceptual resistance, which results in the fact that ‘with some hesitations and some dis- sent, contemporary critical traditions continue a nineteenth-century view of social redemption through schooling’ (Popkiewitz and Brennan 1998). In the article I put forward the possibility that the seemingly unresolvable theoretical resistance residing in the very essence of pedagogy as a scienti c discourse, once reexamined in fact veils an inverted conception of pedagogical philosophy as the core of Foucault’s stance.

This article is an attempt to interpret Witold Gombrowicz’s first novel in the context of cynicism, which is first conceptualized within the Foucauldian tradition as a practice of “frank speech” (parrhesia), and then, according to Peter Sloterdijk’s critical philosophy, as a form of modern consciousness based on inverted idealism. The opposition between an ancient subversive cynicism and its modern schizoid form allows one to analyze the complexity of Ferdydurke. In the course of interpretation it turns out that there are some intersecting planes: the protagonist searches in vain for lost insolence, but it is the author who manages to find it at the end of the novel.

Opis:
This paper offers a reflection on educational discourse with particular focus on pedagogical discourse about youth. It begins with terminological and methodological assertions. Making a distinction between the discourse of educational practice and pedagogical discourse, I attempted to identify some types of discourse about youth which have become prominent in pedagogical research. To grasp the characteristics of the discourse I referred to quite a wide selection of pedagogical texts which provide data about the ways of problematisation of the theme of youth. They included monographs devoted to youth, research reports and articles from pedagogical periodicals, published in the last decade. My research tools in the qualitative analysis of the texts were two basic analytical categories: ideological dominants (the concept of youth, dominant values attributed to young age and youth) and interrogative dominants (fundamental practices of formulating questions about youth, problematisation, and typical conceptual categories). The typology of discourses about youth derived from empirical studies was used to construct a theoretical model of the analysis of integration of knowledge about youth. The concluding section poses several questions pointing at some potentially interesting areas for future research into heterogeneous sources of knowledge about youth.

The article analyses the phenomena occurring in epistolary, namely the exchange of letters. The newly published correspondence of Jerzy Lisowski with Anna and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, during a very specific period, when, just after the war, the imposed socialist-realist regime was taking shape, will serve as an example. However, the practices connected with disciplining public order in Poland are not the subject of the article, but people with completely different aesthetic desires. Politics in this correspondence gives way to the plan of, for example, fascination with Romance studies and the achievements of Western culture, which not only united the authors of the epistolary dialogue, but also significantly shaped it for the rest of their lives. This is particularly important if one looks at the professions of both participants in the correspondence. The author of the article takes as a paradigm elements of Michel Foucault’s claims from the collection of lectures entitled Hermeneutics of the Subject from the College de France from the turn of 1981/1982. The correspondence is analysed in terms of claims related to the practices of the self, the exchange of letters between friends in the age of antiquity, and parrhesia. References to fragments of an elementary work on epistolography, namely Theory of a Letter [Teoria listu] by Stefania Skwarczyńska, are also an important element. One of the inspirations for writing the article was also New Theory of a Letter [Nowa teoria listu] by Anita Całek, who also proposes to look at the correspondence through the prism of the theorems of Foucault and Skwarczyńska. The aim of the article was to present not only the essential features of a letter in the context of the formation of interpersonal relations, but also the maturation of personality and to understand to what extent letters may become a testimony of rich autobiographical narratives.

The annual, nationwide “Independence March” taking place on the anniversary of Poland regaining independence has become a phenomenon and the only event of its kind at that time. It brings together – in the physical sense – thousands of Poles. However, it is even more engaging in symbolic terms. The research aimed to analyze the Independence March as a heterotopic space according to Michel Foucault and, more precisely, to refer to four of the six principles of heterotopia proposed by the French philosopher. The first two principles apply to society in general and, therefore, were not analyzed in relation to the event of the Independence March. The remaining four were successfully used to reflect on it more deeply. Research has shown that the “Independence March” is an example of heterotopia, and what distinguishes it from other previously studied spaces with heterotopic features is the simultaneous variability and spatial stability, the range of influence, the multitude of ways of entering its space and the significant function it performs because of its complexity.
