Opis:
Dark grey podzolized soils on the loess like loams, which are represented in the soil cover within fresh and humidity gradients in the Western Forest Steppe of Ukraine, are characterized by high forest vegetation potential, which ensure the formation of mostly pure and mixed larch and spruce stands with high level of the productivity. Despite the fact that both species are coniferous, their effect on the soil, in particular, on its acid-base indicators (actual and potential forms of acidity, sum of absorbed bases, degree of saturation of bases, content of mobile aluminium), which are important components of soil fertility, are specific. Due to the fact that there is a close interaction between forest plantations and soil properties, changing the participation of species in the stand, it is possible to adjust the actual soil fertility. The soils under both pure and mixed spruce and larch stands are characterized by a high level of potential acidity that reaches the high acidic values in the upper horizons. A similar reaction of soil solution under coniferous forests is caused by acid hydrolysis of aluminosilicates and accumulation of mobile Al in the rhizosphere zone. Simultaneously, the same acidic characteristics, including the presence of movable aluminium, are also found in soils under broadleaved plantations. In general, acid-exchange properties of soils (high potential acidity, unsaturation of bases and availability of movable aluminium) traditionally are considered as unfavourable for vegetation. However, our researches refute it and prove that within certain values, these indicators do not limit the productivity of pure and mixed spruce and larch stands.

This work evaluates effects of tablet fertilizers Silvamix, Silvamix Mg and Silvagen on height and diameter growth of a young plantation of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] and European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) after the third year of fertilizer application. The experiment was conducted on one experimental plot in the Low Tatra Mountains. The fertilizers were applied at a rate five tablets (50 g) per each tree, considering not treated trees as the control. The tablets were laid on the ground and thoroughly trodden into soil. ANOVA analysis did not reveal any significant effects of fertilizers on height and diameter growth of Norway spruce trees. The use of Silvagen resulted in significant effects on height growth of larch trees.

A decomposition study was carried out on the leaf litters of Leucaena leucocaephala to determine the rate of decomposition of its leaves with respect to its placement on above or below the ground levels in L. leucocaephala plantations of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria. In the study, leaf litter were randomly handpicked from the forest floor, of this, 40 g each were weighed into thirty (30) litter bags of 2 mm mesh size in which 15 were randomly placed on the forest floor (above-ground) and the remaining 15 were buried in the soil between 5-10 cm depth (below-ground). Data were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques such as percentage, while inferential statistics (simple linear regression) was used to determine relationships between various nutrient elements and days of decomposition (DOD). We noted that the percentage of mass loss of leaf litter increased with time in days after deposit and was higher (29.93%, 32.43 % and 33.25%, 41.65%) at 80 to 100 days of placement above- and below-ground, respectively. Moreover, the exchangeable basic cations and chemical compositions of litters were not consistent with respect to DOD. Regression analysis of nitrogen (N) and organic carbon (OC) showed that these elements significantly contributed to the high (86 %) overall decomposition of litter (p < 0.05, p < 0.01) below-ground level. It is, therefore, concluded that decomposition of leaf litters occur faster below ground than above ground within the forest plantation.

The quantification of biomass carbon pools is important for understanding carbon cycling in forest ecosystems. This study was designed to reveal the effects of stand age on biomass partitioning and carbon storage of Chinese fir plantation stands in Dabie Mountains of Anhui, East China. A total of six even-aged Chinese fir plantation stands along an age-sequence from 10 to 50 years were selected. To quantify the biomass of different tree components, 18 trees with diameter at breast height (D1.3) from 6.5 to 35.2 cm were harvested from the different aged stands. Biomasses of understory vegetation, forest floor and standing dead trees were also investigated. Total biomass carbon storages ranged from 57.6 to 211.4 Mg ha–1 in the different aged stands. Tree layer comprised from 93.7% to 96.4% of the total biomass C pools in the different aged stands. The C pools of the necromass were from 1.8 to 6.2 Mg ha–1. Stand age had a significant effect on tree biomass partitioning, with an increase in proportion of root biomass. The root/shoot ratios were from 0.187 to 0.312, which was significantly positively correlated to stand age. The existing plantation stands are still developing and have somewhat high rate of biomass and carbon accumulations beyond the normal rotation period (usually 25–30 years) even over an age of 50 years. Appropriate prolongation of the rotation period of Chinese fir plantation will be effective in maintaining long-term productivity and providing large carbon sink. The measurements provide valuable data for modelling productivity of Chinese fir plantation forest.

A numerical analysis of the phytosociological relevés from ancient and recent woodland on a mesic forest site in central Poland was carried out. Three groups of forest stands were recognised: planted with Pinus, recent and ancient oak-hornbeam Tilio-Carpinetum. The species of ancient woodland occurred mainly in ancient oak-hornbeam forest stands, however some ferns: Dryopteris carthusiana, D. dilatata and D. filix-mas, and an orchid species Epipactis helleborine, are to be found mainly or exclusively in recent forests. The occurrence of ancient forest species in recent woods may be putatively explained by long-distance wind dispersal or by the thriving in situ in unrecognised small wood patches. Twelve ancient woodland indicators (i.e. 36% of a total number found in the region under study) occur exclusively in ancient woodland. It underlines the role of passive species protection in the maintenance of the regional species diversity.

The present study was executed in order to examine the influences of land use change on aggregate stability and soil organic carbon fractions in the humid region of the north of Iran. The study area featured three land uses which included natural Hyrcanian forest, tea plantation and paddy rice cultivation. One hundred soil samples were taken from the 0-10 cm layer in a grid pattern to allow for variations in the study area as much as possible in summer 2016. The results revealed that land use change significantly altered the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil, as the highest values of soil organic carbon and complexed organic carbon, and the lowest values of pH, calcium carbonate equivalent and bulk density, were observed in the natural forest. The greatest percentage of macro-aggregates was found in the natural forest followed by the tea plantation. Particulate organic carbon and soil organic carbon associated with clay and silt particles as well as soil organic carbon associated with all aggregate fractions showed the following trend: natural forest > tea plantation > rice cultivation. Overall, our results confirmed the importance of forest soils in C sequestration and the vital role played by soil organic carbon in soils to improve soil quality indicators and aggregation.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to recognise the species composition of beetles (Coleoptera) population occurring on hazel shrubs. Three-year studies were carried out on three ecosystems: on the cultivated hazelnut plantation, on an unprotected one and on shrubs of common hazel in the forest. The presence of 63 species was detected. The smallest number of species (22) and individuals (535) was noted in the protected plantation and the highest number in an unprotected one (46 species and 2787 individuals). In the forest the presence of 46 species and 1317 individuals was observed. The dominant species among beetles on hazel plantation in south-eastern Poland are from weevils’ family (Curculionidae). Curculio nucum and leaf-eaters from Phyllobius sp. genus were most often collected. The remaining species that were observed are non-economic pests of hazelnut, but giving up suitable chemical pest control and horticultural treatment results in an increase of their number. At that situation the number of species characteristic of common hazel growing in the forest increased on large-fruited hazel too. The species composition, number, dominance and the topic and trophic groups of Coleoptera adults are given in this paper.
W ciągu trzech lat badań zebrano ogółem 4639 osobników należących do 63 gatunków i 35 rodzajów. Warunki siedliskowe kształtowały skład gatunkowy i liczebność chrząszczy.

Opis:
The research was aimed at analysing the peculiarities of non-structural carbohydrate metabolism in the needles of Pinus pallasiana D. Don in anti-erosion plantations on the slope and in the thalweg of the Viyskovyi ravine under different forest growth conditions. The ravine is located in the Dnipropetrovsk region and belongs to the southern geographical variant of ravine forests. The studied plants grew at three experimental sites of man-made plantation: in the thalweg (forest growth conditions – mesophilic, fresh, CL2), in the middle part of the slope of the southern exposure (mesoxerophilic, somewhat dry, or semi-arid, CL1) and on the upper part of this slope (xerophilic, arid, CL0–1). Changes in glucose, fructose, reducing sugars, sucrose and starch during the period from May to October were studied. The concentration of osmotically active substances (glucose, sucrose) increases in the months with the most unfavourable hydrothermal parameters, especially in plants of mesoxerophilic and xerophilic forest growth conditions. The dynamics of fructose content revealed two maxima (July and October), when the concentration of glucose tends to increase steadily, with the highest values found in October. During the study period, the level of fructose in the needles under the arid conditions of the upper and middle parts of the slope was much lower than under the fresh conditions of the thalweg. The dynamics curve of the starch content tends to decrease from the maximum values in May to the first minimum in August. It is followed by some increase in the concentration of this polysaccharide that does not reach the previous values. The second minimum is registered in October. Such changes in the level of starch in the needles of plants are observed under all forest growth conditions. The decrease in polysaccharide content is consistent with the increase in glucose and sucrose, especially in August. A more significant increase in the concentration of soluble osmoprotective sugars (glucose, sucrose) in P. pallasiana needles under unfavourable hydrothermal conditions compared to normal moisture conditions indicates the ability of plants to adapt to mesoxerophilic and xerophilic conditions.

Support of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) plantations by amelioration has been tested in air-polluted sites in the mountains since 1993. The research locality is a site with humic podzol soils at an altitude of 960 m a.s.l. Dolomitic limestone (1 kg per tree) was mixed with soil used for planting tree seedlings. According to the results of a 15-year investigation (1993– 2008), liming had a positive effect on beech tree growth, while the positive effect of liming on tree growth was temporary in the case of sycamores. Ca content was higher in the limed beech plantations throughout the observation period. Soil analyses (sampled in 2002) showed that the application of dolomitic limestone influenced soil conditions markedly in terms of increased pH. The pH values measured in H2O increased from 4.9 to 6.2 for beeches and from 4.3 to 6.1 for sycamores.

Activity of soil dehydrogenase (DHA) was measured in the mineral soil in a forest stand of 15 to 16-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) from geographically diverse populations, as an indicator of biological activity of soil microorganisms, in a provenance experiment in Poland. The pine populations originated from six European countries (Sweden, Russia, Latvia, Poland, Germany, France) and differed widely in aboveground biomass and productivity. Soil DHA during two growing seasons showed pronounced seasonal variability, which was significantly related to the fine root concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates. Higher DHA was found in soil under canopies of the central and southern European populations than in those from more northern parts of the Scots pine range. Significant positive correlation between soil DHA and aboveground tree biomass suggest that these patterns most likely resulted from differences in carbon dynamics and productivity among populations.

Opis:
The resilience of forest ecosystems to climate changes such as elevated temperature and frequent drought episodes, strongly depends on how the soil subsystems and its inhabitants responds to these perturbation. The epigeic soil Collembola communities of mature mixed deciduous forest and adjacent young plantation on moderately humid soil were compared in two consecutive years, out of which the second one was marked by significant deficiency of precipitation in growing− −season. The study plots were established on the area of experimental forests of Warsaw University of Life Science−SGGW in Rogów (central Poland). The objectives of the study was to assess the sensitivity of forest Collembola communities to drought stress and to check if the reaction depends on stand age. We also aimed to test if an indicator species of climate changes can be appointed. The results showed that three months drought episode had negative impact on forest Collembola communities of mature stands, while communities of young plantation were not affected. The reduction of total abundance of Collembola and clear changes in communities structure in mature stand was detected in the year of lower precipitation. The Collembola communities of young plantation were also significantly transformed, but in result of clear cutting and soil preparation. Therefore, the successional changes were the most evident process in these communities and there were no signs of drought influence. Among the most numerous species in Collembola communities of mature forest Isotomiella minor was appointed as an indicator of drought, because its abundance was drastically reduced in the year of lower precipitation. The small number of specimen of this species in young plantation may also prove its sensitivity to deficiency of humidity in soil. The significantly negative response to drought episode was documented also for Psuedosinella horaki, Micraphorura absoloni and Megalothorax minimus. Our study provided strong evidence that the drought, which lasted only three months, had a detrimental effect on forest Collembola commu− nities.
