Opis:
My goal in the present paper is to carry out an analysis of the syntactic and discourse properties of Information Focus (IF) in Southern Peninsular Spanish (SPS) and Standard Spanish (SS) varieties. Generally, it has been argued that IF tends to occur last in a sentence since new information is placed in final position, following the End-Focus Principle as well as the Nuclear Stress Principle (Zubizarreta 1998). Focus fronting has been hence reserved for those cases in which a clear contrast between two alternatives is established, namely Contrastive Focus (CF) and Mirative Focus (MF) (cf. Cruschina 2012). The starting hypothesis here is that IF can appear as a fronted element in a sentence and that SPS speakers show a higher degree of acceptability and grammaticality towards such constructions, as opposed to SS speakers. This points toward a certain degree of microparametric variation in Spanish syntax (an understudied area), which will be tested by means of a grammaticality judgement task run among both SPS and SS speakers.

To avoid problems connected with peculiar features of the neutron emission from this kind of source, a preliminary standardisation of the method has been carried out. The results obtained have a practical interest in view of possible applications to the technology of extraction of minerals.

Opis:
The existence of plasma microturbulence in Plasma Focus (PF) devices is a widely accepted fact within the PF community. This microturbulence must be generated as a final stage of microscopic instabilities, which could develop during certain phases of the plasma evolution. Among the candidate instabilities to occur in these devices, the lower hybrid drift instability is the one with better possibilities, because its triggering condition (electron drift velocity approaching ion thermal velocity) has reasonable chances to be fulfilled. The main effect of the development of this instability is the modification of the collision frequencies in the plasma, which adds an anomalous term to the plasma resistivity. The theory for evaluating this extra term exists, and has been already used in PF 1D numerical simulations and in Z-pinch calculations. The role of this anomalous resistivity in PF behaviour has been the subject of considerable speculations. In this work, a 1D MHD (magnetohydrodynamics) calculation of the pinch stage in a PF device will be presented, including anomalous resistivity effects and their influence on electric fields and the discharge current are discussed.

The regulatory focus theory proposed by E. Tory Higgins differentiates between two distinct strategies for self regulation: (1) promotion and (2) prevention regulatory focus. The former is concerned with ideals, advancement, aspirations, accomplishments, and growth, while the latter – with oughts, obligations, responsibility, protection, and safety. The paper presents the main theses of the theory and results of selected studies concerning the role of regulatory focus in cognitive processes and decision making, different aspects of goal achievement, and also in experiencing emotions, assessment making and value judgments. The last part of the paper discusses strong and weak points of the theory as well as its associations with other cognitive models of self-regulation. It is also proposed to put the regulatory foci in a broader context of personality and temperament variables.

A global instability theory of pinching plasmas allows us to justify the well-known empirical facts of the use of a mismatched dense plasma focus (DPF) and heavy inert gas admixtures. We assume that an instability of tangential discontinuity is responsible for the instability of a current-carrying plasma column. To inhibit development of a tangential discontinuity in a plasma focus, an array of insulator fibers or metallic wires placed on the anode near the axis of a discharge camera can be used.

Plasma derived flash X-ray sources may find potential applications in medicine and industry. Notwithstanding, as is the case of Plasma Focus (PF) devices, their characterisation in term of photon energy, temporal and spatial beam stability is far to be considered satisfactory. In this work, a radiographic approach, which avoids the effects caused by the intrinsic instability of the pinch output of a PF machine, is proposed and an attenuation curve can be attained even in presence of Xray emission instability. Using two radiographic films for each shot exposition symmetrically positioned and collimated to the pinch region the mean energy of the photons in the X-ray beam are evaluated. The X-ray emission symmetry from the pinch region was then utilised to control the validity of the proposed methodology.

Opis:
The paper presents various designs of several medium and small size Dense Plasma Focus (DPF) chambers intended for numerous applications, a description of technologies used in these facilities, and some results reached with these devices by using a number of diagnostic techniques. In present experiments the DP foci have been used mainly as an X-ray source. We discuss here how it is possible to satisfy absolutely new and very strict demands on the construction and technology for the devices to be eventually applied in science and industry. Between these characteristics there are a high repetition rate (typically 1…15 Hz) and a long lifetime (over 1 million shots). Their switching elements, a collector and chambers must withstand a high quasi-continuous heat load (up to 100 kW). High energy density in the central part of the chamber anode and the necessity to provide a channel for radiation extraction demanded a special construction and specific materials implementation in this region. Their X-ray spectrum should be tuned. They have to operate with different working gases and preferably in a wide range of pressures. All these points are discussed in this report. Capabilities of the described techniques are illustrated by results of the recent experimental studies carried out with facilities located at the Nanyang Technological University (NX1) as well as at the Lebedev Physical Institute (PF-0.2).

Maintaining wellbeing and independence by elderly people results from implementing the rules of “successful aging” , based on activity and participation in professional and social life, as well promotion of healthy lifestyle. Increasingly greater importance is attributed to frailty syndrome among patients of old age. These patients are characterized by increased sensitivity to stimuli, impaired ability to cope with inner and environmental stressinducing factors, and they also have limited ability to maintain the state of physiological and psychosocial homeostasis. In such cases it is necessary to provide the patients with integrated care based on the support of the environment and the latest technology. Providing the residents of Lower Silesian Province with high quality of life, adjusting social services to residents’ needs, and social integration alone are compliant with The Strategy of Social Integration in Lower Silesia. For that reason, supporting such patients with technology in Lower Silesia was started with the CareWell and WRP® pilot projects. The use of the latest technologies requires a social campaign, media-distributed information, and awakening social interest or even a trend related to their use. It will allow the refining of new services, reduce costs and improve safety for people. Instead of costly specialist care, elderly patients will receive individualized care located within the environment, which will be less costly but more intensive. The FOCUS project deals with reducing the frailty syndrome load in the population of elderly Founpeople in Europe, taking note of enhancing the environmental support. The purpose of the SUNFRAIL project is to improve the identification, prevention and management of frailty, and care of multimorbidity by regional centers and institutions in EU countries of people aged 65 years and over living in the local community.

The Dense Plasma Focus (DPF) devices PF-1000, PF-6 and PF-5M working with different gases and in dissimilar irradiation modes were used to carry out experimental investigations of irradiation of a number of materials by powerful pulsed ion and high-temperature plasma streams. The materials under test were designed for application in structural and functional components of thermonuclear fusion devices with magnetic (MPC) and inertial (IPC) plasma confinement, as well as for working chambers of plasma and accelerator devices. The main features of the materials are low-activation and radiation-resistant properties. On the basis of the investigations a significant progress was achieved in understanding of dynamics of high-energy nano- and micro-second pulsed streams in DPF from one side as well as on the mechanisms of their influence upon materials under irradiation from the other one. We demonstrated that this approach can be useful for certain tests of plasma-facing materials (e.g. W for MPC and stainless steels for IPC) and of structural (construction) elements of the above-mentioned devices subjected to pulsed high-energy radiation streams. The results obtained suggest also that DPF devices can be used in new pulse technologies for material treatment by means of powerful nanosecond and microsecond pulses of plasma and ion streams.

The aim of the present experiments was to reproduce and to study in laboratory quasi-perpendicular supercritical collisionless shocks similar to the Earth-Solar Wind shock, by using a plasma focus facility as the plasma source. The experiments were performed on the PF-3 facility (Filippov-type plasma focus) at a level of energy supply of about 1 MJ. Directed plasma jets are produced with axial velocities ~107 cm/s after compression of a plasma-current sheath in the initial stage of plasma focus formation. These jets then travel through an ambient plasma resulting in early gas ionization by X-ray radiation from the plasma focus, and at an angle of 90° to the 2500 G external magnetic field applied by a system based on rear-earth magnets. Our experimental conditions allowed us to reach a range MA ~ 5÷10.

Focus Construction in Yoruba language and its dialects has attracted the attention of many Yoruba scholars. But to the best of our knowledge, none has investigated this phenomenon in Èkìtì and Oǹdó dialects. This forms the focus of this paper. The data collection relies on the informants who are native speakers of the two dialects. They are between ages 60 to 80 and they have spent almost their life-times in the selected dialect communities. Descriptive approach is adopted for the discussion. Findings reveal that although, the two dialects belong to different Yoruba major groups; Central Yoruba and Southeast Yoruba, there are some similarities and differences in the syntax of the two dialects. These similarities and differences can mostly be reflected on their focus constructions. The concern of this paper is to consider the similarities and differences between the focus constructions in the two dialects.
