    Nam June Paik (1932–2006) is now considered to be the most influential creator in visual arts. He is said to be the first artist who presented television as a source of artistic experience. However, nowadays many people forget about his musical beginnings. Starting as a musician, he was inspired by, for example, John Cage, whose philosophical way of thinking had a positive impact on Paik’s future experiments with music and objects. Exposition of Music – Electronic Television (1963, Wuppertal) was artist’s symbolic transfer from music to visual arts, presenting prepared pianos together with prepared TV’s. The article presents the exhibition as well as the environment created by Paik, showing the equality, importance and impact of two not so different kinds of art.

    Esej jest próbą spojrzenia na grupę Fluxus jako na zjawisko, które w znaczny sposób wpłynęło na kulturę współczesną dzięki nieszablonowemu podejściu do aktywności artystycznej oraz płynnym przekraczaniu granic pomiędzy różnymi dyscyplinami sztuki a życiem. Głównym przedmiotem zainteresowania w obrębie Fluxusu jest redefinicja sztuki oraz czerpanie z technologii audiowizualnych, które przyczyniło się do rozwoju sztuki nowych mediów. W tym celu przywołany zostaje jeden z głównych reprezentantów i prekursorów wideo art Nam June Paik, amerykański artysta pochodzenia koreańskiego, który działał w kolektywie oraz tworzył indywidualnie. We wprowadzeniu do rozważań o Fluxusie nakreślony został kontekst historyczny, wskazujący na  tendencje i okoliczności towarzyszące powstaniu grupy. Przy przywołaniu najważniejszych artystów i ich około-artystycznych aktywności szczególny akcent zostaje położony na postać George’a Maciunasa oraz na lewicowe wpływy, jakim ulegał konstruując program Fluxusu. Kolejnym punktem rozważań jest analiza zjawiska pod kątem wyjaśnienia jego podstawowych założeń i ich realizacji, aktualności postulatów w czasach współczesnych oraz dziedzictwa. Finalnym i kluczowym elementem tekstu jest przywołanie lat 60. Jako złotej dekady technologicznych eksperymentów, na tle której Nam June Paik ukazał się jako niezwykle kreatywny wizjoner i inicjator procesów, związanych z rozwojem sztuki nowych mediów. The art redefinition and new media – FluxusSUMMARYThe present essay seeks to look at the Fluxus group as a phenomenon that largely influenced contemporary culture owing to an unconventional approach to artistic activity and the smooth crossing of boundaries between different art disciplines and life. The main subject of interest within Fluxus was to redefine art and draw on audiovisual technologies, which contributed to the development of the art of new media. For this purpose, the text refers to one of the main representatives and predecessors of video art, Nam June Paik, a Korean-born American artist, who worked creatively both in a team as well as individually. The introduction to the considerations on Fluxus outlines the historical context showing the tendencies and circumstances of the origin of the group. When referring to the most important artists and their accompanying artistic activities, special emphasis was laid on the figure of George Maciunas and the left-wing influences to which he yielded while he constructed the Fluxus program. The next point of presentation is the analysis of the phenomenon from the perspective of explaining its fundamental assumptions and their implementation, the relevance of the Fluxus postulates in the contemporary period and its heritage. The final and key element of the text is the reference to the nineteensixties as a golden decade of technological experiments, in whose context Nam June Paik appeared as an extremely creative visionary and initiator of processes associated with the development of art of new media.

    Pavlína Morganová Ways of interpreting action-art Based on the publication by three outstanding Czech theorists: Jindřich Chalupecký (1910-1990), Petr Rezek (1948) and František Šmejkal (1937- 1988), Morganova describes three different ways of interpreting action art. She analyzed art pieces from 1966, 1977 and 1981, referring to the early and mature stages of action art in the Czechia. The presented study brings together significant examples of Czech action artist, for example Vladimir Boudnik the precursor, and Milan Knížák, a younger follower. There are also references to the international context (for example the Fluxus movement), philosophy (phenomenology) and psychology (Carl Gustav Jung’s theories). Morganova draws readers’ attention to difficulties in unequivocally explaining and commenting on action art. The final reflections are aimed at resolving the question of whether and to what extent that kind of art belongs to postmodernism.

    Tekst dotyczy filmu The Flicker (1966), kinematograficznego debiutu zmarłego niedawno Tony’ego Conrada – wybitnego muzyka, odważnego reżysera, głównej postaci nowojorskiego undergroundu lat 60. Autor przedstawia kluczowy film amerykańskiej awangardy lat 60. na szerokim tle kultury epoki: od ówczesnych zjawisk w sztukach wizualnych, przez wątki amerykańskiej kultury masowej, po tendencje nowojorskiej sceny muzyki eksperymentalnej. Szeroka panorama kulturowych zjawisk układa się estetykę nowego, bezpośredniego oddziaływania dzieła sztuki na odbiorcę, oddziaływania, dla którego modelem staje się działanie substancji psychoaktywnych. Estetyka ta rodzi się pomiędzy koncepcjami Johna Cage’a, Norberta Weinera oraz Williama Burroughsa. Autor w końcowej części tekstu zestawia The Flicker z innymi filmami eksperymentalnymi z tego okresu, kładąc nacisk na te powstające w środowisku Fluxusu.
    The text deals with The Flicker (1966), the cinematographic debut by the recently deceased Tony Conrad – an outstanding musician, a courageous director, the major character of the New York underground of the 1960s. The author presents a film key to the American avant-garde of the 1960s against the backdrop of the wider cultural trends of the era: contemporary phenomena in visual arts, themes of American mass culture, and experimental New York musical scene. The wide panorama of cultural phenomena forms a new aesthetics of art directly impacting the viewer, where the impact is modelled after the effect of psychoactive substances. This aesthetics arises out of the ideas of John Cage, Norbert Weiner and William Burroughs. The author in the final part of the article compares The Flicker with other experimental films of the period, in particular those made within the Fluxus movement.

    In different historic periods, artists used the element of humor in their works of art and the results of their interest can be considered as aesthetic category. Humor was often combined with irony, self-irony, satire etc. Also, it was used as independent form. In popular and not necessarily in artistic work, humor played rather secondary role in the culture. Immanuel Kant and many later authors did not consider, however, humor-art as art-form. The Dadaists and other artists active after the 1960’s did not follow those gloomy ideas of their predecessors. As the result of that change, humor gained a new meaning. Today, the art forms which gained originality and significance because of humoristic content, are considered as important manifestations of art. Among them, special attention should be paid to art-form which gained strength because of their humor. Hence, we might say, as did Marcel Duchamp, paradoxically, that humor contributed to the seriousness of art. Also, we might highlight the role of practical joke.

    The paper introduces and discusses Strappo ad Asolo from 1973, a site-specific artwork by Dorothee von Windheim along with its vast documentation preserved at the Conz Archive in Berlin. The findings are based on the research in the archive conducted in the fall and winter of 2018 as well as the correspondence with Dorothee von Windheim. In the first part, the figures of the collector and curator Francesco Conz and the artist are introduced. The account of their activities in the early 1970s is followed by the description of their meeting and production of Strappo ad Asolo in 1973. In the latter part of the article, I look closer at the ontology of Dorothee von Windheim’s artwork and its uniqueness in the wider context of the site-specific art of the 1960s and 1970s as well as reflect on the documentation process as a part of the performative site-specific practice. In order to analysie Strappo ad Asolo, the notions of framing (Immanuel Kant, Jacques Derrida, Craig Owens) and index (Rosalind Krauss) are employed. In the final remarks, the importance of Strappo ad Asolo—both for Dorothee von Windheim and for Francesco Conz—is underlined.

    Dada movement stripped art of seriousness, turned art into a joke, a sophisticated fun. Where there were Dadaists, there was laughter, as Hans Richter once said. Dadaists formed an opposition: bour-geois false values, over which hovered the stench of death and money – versus life. They stood on the side of life; on the side of art stripped of bourgeois seriousness. But the Dadaists also found liberated joke – a joke that served no purpose, fought against nothing and attacked nothing. ‘Entracte’ by Francis Picabia and ready-mades by Marcel Duchamp were in fact the jokes, which formed a new concept of art – art liberated from the domination of taste. Readymades had all the attributes of artwork : author, title, year of creation, audience, critics, etc., but did they become works of art? The artists are the ones who choose and force us to follow their choices, who reject good taste and that is the way they take control over art – by separating good art from bad. The joke is changing the way we think about art, pointing to the ambivalence adopted by our assumptions about the world. In an interview, Duchamp said that the public treated very seriously contemporary art. Did he want to say that it was too serious? Fluxus developed dada-like ambiguity. Where the audience expected to see art, often they received something that could be perceived as joke. The ambiguity was attributed not only to Fluxus, but virtually to the entire art of the 1960’s, as evidenced by the Kamp aesthetics. Kamp is ‘the seriousness that fails’. Kamp means a change with respect to bad art and it shows that we can play with it. In the 1960’s and the 1970’s, in the second wave of feminism, laughter returns as a weapon, as a tool to combat patriarchal culture.

W odróżnieniu od książek artystycznych, których podstawowym założeniem jest stworzenie unikalnej formy estetycznej, a które często są drogimi, dużymi produkcjami znanych wydawców publikacji o sztuce, książka artysty jest produkcją własną, opartą na własnych możliwościach i koncepcji wynikającej z warunków społecznych, w jakich dana publikacja jest wytwarzana. Przykładem poddanym analizie i opracowaniu w tym wydaniu Galerii jest działalność artystyczna Polskiego artysty sztuki konceptualnej i mail art - Paweł Petasz. Był on twórcą prac-kolaży, a także licznych self-published swoich własnych książek artysty, oraz instigatorem magazynu Commonpress, który stał się zbiorowym dziełem artystów mail art działających na całym świecie. Celem piątej edycji Galerii jest przybliżenie dokonań artystycznych Petasza, tak aby na tej podstawie dokonać prób nowych interpretacji tego rodzaju aktywności artystycznej, reewaluacji tej formy twórczości w kontekście współczesnego świata sztuki.
    The program assumptions of the fifth edition of the Gallery in the Sztuka i Dokumentacja journal concern the artist's book. Contrary to art books, the basic assumption of which is to create a unique aesthetic form, and which are often expensive, large productions of well-known publishers of art publications, the artist's book is his own production, based on his own abilities and concept resulting from the social conditions in which a given publication is produced. An example analyzed and elaborated in this edition of the Gallery is the artistic activity of the Polish artist of conceptual art and mail art - Paweł Petasz. He was the creator of collage works, as well as numerous self-published works of his own artist’s books, and the instigator of Commonpress magazines, which became a collective work of mail art artists active around the world. The aim of the fifth edition of the Gallery is to present Petasz's artistic achievements, so as to make attempts on this basis for new interpretations of this type of artistic activity, and to re-evaluate this form of creativity in the context of the contemporary art world.

    John Cage, Fluxus i muzykalność Nam June Paika Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest analizie performance’u Nam June Paika. Autorka sugeruje, iż twórczość Paika, szczególnie po roku 1960, można uznać za wyjątkowo „muzyczną,” jeżeli spojrzy się na nią przez pryzmat Cage’owskiej muzyki-jako-działania. U Paika elementy słuchowe, wizualne i teatralne są zespolone w taki sposób, że performance staje się siłą jednoczącą i nadającą znaczenie. Autorka kończy artykuł argumentem, iż wpływ Cage’a był kluczowy, jeśli chodzi o rozwój dorobku twórczego Paika, skierowany w stronę eksperymentów w zakresie telewizji i wideo.
    In this paper, I offer an analysis of the performance art of Nam June Paik that suggests his works, especially those from the 1960s, are essentially “musical” when viewed through the influence of John Cage’s notion of music-as-action. In Paik’s work aural, visual, and theatrical elements are integrated such that performance becomes a unifying and meaning-generating force. I conclude by suggesting that Cage’s influence set the tone for Paik’s expansion into the experiments with television and video that would occupy him for the remainder of his career.
