Opis:
It is not a coincidence that urban fantasy is being identified with modern, futuristic metropolises. On its streets, two worlds are juxtaposed: the real and the magical. Unlike the first one, the latter is concealed in shadows, hiding elves, vampires, and other magical creatures from the watchful eyes of ordinary citizens. Only a handful of informed humans have the right to step into this world, which is presented only to the select few. The author of the article Guns and Hats, or a Drowner on a Bicycle: On the (Retro)Industrial Adaptation of Urban Fantasy Subgenre distinguishes between three main tropes of the eponymous convention: a presence of the city, a coexistence of magical and empirical world, and an influence of organisations guarding the secret of the otherworld. All three mentioned tropes are exemplified in two contemporary fantasy novels—Adam Przechrzta’s Adept (The Adept) and Charlie Fletcher’s The Oversight, both set in the nineteenth-century fictionalised reality, which bears resemblance to urban fantasy subgenre. In the end, nineteenth-century city turns out to be the best locale to set a fantasy story that addresses the primary sense of urbanization.

Opis:
Islands have always occupied a significant place in literature and have been a source of inspiration for the literary imagination. Fictional islands have existed as either lost paradises, or places where law breaks down under physical hardships and a sense of entrapment and oppression. Islands can be sites of exotic fascination, of cultural exchange and of great social and political upheaval. However, they are more than mere locations since to be in a place implies being bound to that place and appropriating it. That means that the islands narrow boundaries, surrounded by the sea and cut off from mainland, can create bridges between the real and the imaginary as a response to cultural and social anxieties, frequently taking the form of eutopias/dystopias, Edens, Arcadias, Baratarias, metatexts, or cultural crossroads, deeply transforming that particular geographical location. This article is concerned with insularity as a way of interrogating cultural and political practices in the early modern period by looking at the works of Cervantes, Fletcher and Shakespeare where insular relations are characterized by tensions of different sort. The arrival of Prospero and Miranda, Periandro and Auristela (The Trials of Persiles and Segismunda), and Albert and Aminta (The Sea Voyage) to their respective islands take us to a different world, revealing different political and cultural interests and generating multiple perspectives on the shifting relationship between culture, society and power.

Opis:
Discourse markers are part and parcel of linguistic behavior of speakers of all languages. In more reserved societies, people tend to express greater distance to other people. In more open societies, speakers maintain closer proximity with others, and are more inclined to preserve greater intimacy with people they come into contact with. All the same, depending on the society using the language, different forms of complementation of literal semantic meanings are used. In some cultures speakers feel, that apart from words, they need to respond to what other people say with, be it a gesture, a facial expression or an interjection. This reaction might be received as a kind of mockery by speakers of other languages. Native speakers of English seem to be more concerned with the point of view of their interlocutors. Whereas in some languages simple no! is enough to express disagreement, in English, a more likely response includes a discourse marker such as well, for instance. This well opens a plethora of interpretations, disagreement among them, but at the same time does not deprive the interlocutor of some degree of rightness. This paper discusses the problem of the use of well amongst native speakers of English, observed on the basis of CHILDES database.

Opis:
Słowo, kolor i dźwięk — Johna Goulda Fletchera hybrydowe „Symfonie kolorów” Artykuł podejmuje problematykę złożoności kompozycyjnej poetyckiego cyklu wierszy pt.
The paper undertakes as its subject the problem of complexity in the composition of a cycle of poems called “Colour Symphonies” written by an American modernist poet John Gould Fletcher in the first decades of the twentieth century. The uniqueness of composition of the entire cycle as well as its separate “colour” parts consists in combining visual representations with diverse sonic effects in a joint effort of creating in this way a singular poetic verbal equivalent. Such hybrid-like compound becomes in turn a carrier of emotional states which the poet attempts to render in successive parts of the cycle. Fletcher’s sequence of colour symphonies is a supreme example of modernist hybridity of composition so characteristic for its numerous poetic groups like for example Imagism.
