Opis:
Black mollies are one of the most popular ornamental fishes in the aquarium hobby. Most People have had at one time at least one of these gentle and attractive fishes in their fish tank. They are one of the most popular feeder fishes due to high growth rate, birth size, reproduction and brood number. During fish development, supply of suitable food during culture period is the most vital factor to achieve good growth ratio. Present study aims at unfolding the feeding preference of Black Molly for which eggs of Pomfret, Carp and Tenualosa sp. and semolina and poppy seeds were provided as food of animal and plant sources respectively. It was observed that food with more protein contents (i.e. food from animal sources) were mostly preferred by Black Molly. It is concluded that food from animal sources could be beneficial to get good growth and survival of Black Molly.

Opis:
Due to the emergence of new species in ichthyofauna of the Zaporizke reservoir, there was a need to study their biology, ecology and patterns of their distribution. Biological invasions of new species of fish can have diverse effects both within aboriginal populations and within the entire ecosystem. The pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most common alien species in the Zaporizke reservoir, which has already adapted to the new environment and quickly develops the reservoirs of the region and increases its number. In addition, this species has a wide range of nutrients and can compete for feed resources with other species of fish. The purpose of the work: to study the biological and ecological parameters of the pumpkinseed, the basic laws of its physiology. The paper describes the results of fish morphological studies, estimation of the number and biomass of young fish, determines the morphometric parameters of peripheral blood, determines fertility indexes and features of the course of oogenesis. The paper presents preliminary results of the assessment of the consequences of the invasion of this species in the basin of the Zaporizke Reservoir.

Opis:
The thermal stratification of the upper water layers in the Baltic Sea varies seasonally in response to the annual cycle of solar heating and wind-induced mixing. In winter, the stratification down to the halocline is almost completely eroded by convection and strong wind mixing. Monthly averaged temperature profiles obtained from the ICES hydrographic database were used to study the long-term variability (1950 to 2005) of winter water mass formation in different deep basins of the Baltic Sea east of the island of Bornholm. Besides strong interannual variability of deep winter water temperatures, the last two decades show a positive trend (increase of 1–1.5◦C). Correlations of winter surface temperatures to temperatures of the winter water body located directly above or within the top of the halocline were strongly positive until the autumn months. Such a close coupling allows sea surface temperatures in winter to be used to forecast the seasonal development of the thermal signature in deeper layers with a high degree of confidence. The most significant impact of winter sea surface temperatures on the thermal signature in this depth range can be assigned to February/March. Stronger solar heating during spring and summer results in thermal stratification of the water column leading to a complete decoupling of surface and deep winter water temperatures. Based on laboratory experiments, temp erature-dependent relationships were utilised to analyse interannual variations of biological processes with special emphasis on the upper trophic levels (e.g.,stage-sp ecific developmental rates of zooplankton and survival rates of fish eggs).

Opis:
We have constructed and tested a device for incubation of individual eggs of fish. We measured the diameter of fertilized and water hardened eggs of vendace (Coregonus albula). Each egg developed in a separate incubator, which was a modified Pasteur pipette. Incubation of 315 eggs resulted in 249 hatched embryos (eleutheroembryos). The technique enabled identification of each eleutheroembryo hatching from a given egg. Example of relationship between external diameter of egg and the length of eleutheroembryo showed potential applications of the technique in studies on fish reproduction biology.
