Opis:
The paper deals with the study on the use of the Fenton and photo-Fenton process for the treatment of landfill leachates from a stabilized landfill site. The effluents were characterized by pH of 8.1, color: 1320 mg Pt/L, COD of 1670 mg/L, of BOD5 155 mg/L, conductivity of 10.3 mS/cm, absorbance of UV254 0.332 and turbidity of 11 NTU. It has been shown that by using Fe(II) and hydrogen peroxide in the Fenton reaction, the organic compounds expressed as COD can be efficiently removed from the effluents. The process was carried out at various doses of H2O2 and Fe(II), using different reaction times in the Fenton process and different times of exposure in the photo-Fenton process. The best conditions for the Fenton process were obtained with a Fe/COD ratio of 1.4 and a H2O2/Fe molar ratio of 3.2. Under these conditions, the removal efficiency of COD was 85.8%. It was also shown that additional UV irradiation of leachate in the so-called photo-Fenton process and the use of appropriate hydrogen peroxide dosing conditions, can increase the effectiveness of COD removal. The maximum effect of COD removal in the photo-Fenton process was 70.7% at a dose of H2O2 3.3 g/L and a dose of Fe(II) of 0.6g Fe/L. An additional advantage of the photo-Fenton process is the ability to shorten the reaction time and reduce the dose of iron, which can thus reduce the amount of deposits generated.

Opis:
Selecting a method of leachate management should take into account, inter alia, changing the chemical composition of the effluent and its quantity. Conventional treatment methods are not always effective and efficient, especially in the case of the removal of these substances hardly biodegradable. Therefore, an alternative to these methods are the methods of AOP (Advanced Oxygen Processes). Among these methods, the most common method of Fenton is known for more than 100 years. The paper presents a theoretical characterization of the Fenton process and its several possibilities modifications. Moreover, in general presents research conducted by scientists from around the world on the use of classical and modified Fenton process in wastewater effluents.

Non-ionic surfactants in water solutions were made subject to degradation by the Fenton process. The species used in the study (Tritons, Tergitols and Symperonics) differed in the presence of aromatic rings in the molecule, in the type of the alkyl chain and in the length of the polyoxyethylene chain. Consideration was given to the problem of how the structure of the surfactant molecule affects the course of the oxidation process and the final mineralization of the solution. Analyzed were the following parameters: total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand and absorbancy of the solution. The study has substantiated the noticeably high efficiency of the Fenton process in degrading non-ionic surfactants.

The short biography of H.J.H. Fenton, an outstanding chemist, and brief history of Fenton reagent discovery were presented. Fenton reagent is defined, as a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and iron(II) ion (H2O2 + Fe2+). This is one of the most effective oxidizing agents for destroying organic compounds. The extraordinariness of Fenton chemistry results from the fact that it is very common in chemical, biological, and natural environmental systems. Nowadays, Fenton reagent plays a very important role in free radical biology and medicine. A very important role it also plays in natural environmental systems, and environment protection engineering (for example in wastewater treatment and remediation of groundwater). Therefore, it can be assumed, that the Fenton’s discovery has played a very important role in all aspects of our life.

Opis:
Sludge conditioning is an important stage in sludge management. In the present study, a sequence of freeze/thaw-electro-Fenton process was designed and specific resistance filtration (SRF) was monitored during sludge conditioning as an important factor in sludge dewaterability. Furthermore, protein and polysaccharide concentrations were measured during the experiments. Results showed that the lowest SRF value contributed to −10°C in freezing process which showed a reducing trend by decreasing solution pH. In addition, results revealed that solution pH less than 3 caused a significant improvement in sludge dewatering; so the lowest SRF has been registered at pH = 2. By increasing current intensity from 0.5 to 1A, SRF values were reduced and then followed by an enhancement with increasing current intensity to 3.2 A. The lowest SRF value (6.1 × 104 m/kg) was obtained at H2O2 = 30 mg/L which was the best conditions for sludge dewatering.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the possibility of degradation of formaldehyde in the effluents from the timber industry with Fenton's reagent. Effluent from the timber industry are characterized by a high concentration of organic compounds and formaldehyde as an obstacle to the purification of wastewater using microorganisms and therefore an alternative to biological methods is the use of solutions based on chemical methods. In recent years, considerable attention is given to testing and implementation of the so-called advanced oxidation methods (Advanced Oxidation Processes - AOPs). A common feature of these systems is that they allow the generation of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals OH center dot with 2,8 V oxidation potential, which react with almost all organic compounds. Fast-paced distribution of impurities, versatility and high efficiency make advanced oxidation methods are now increasingly considered as a promising alternative compared to conventional methods, techniques, wastewater and sludge treatment Wastewater used in the study came from the wood of an industrial plant where the business is the manufacture of chipboard. The study was conducted in three phases with different type of chemical reactants introduced into the technological system. In the first stage reactor was dosed only iron ions Fe3+, H2O2 in the second stage, while the third part of an experiment to test the Fenton reagent treatment was introduced Fe3+ /H2O2. Each stage is divided into five variants. The criterion for division of the variants was the dose of chemical reagents. The study confirmed the applicability of advanced oxidation technologies based on Fenton's reagent in the process of degradation of formaldehyde. It was found that the efficiency of removal of contaminants from wastewater was directly connected with the dose of chemical reagents introduced into the technological system. It was also noted that increasing the dose above the Fenton reagent Fe3+ 0,3 g /l and 3,0 g H2O2/l does not significantly affect the final results of the purification process. The highest results were obtained in the technology used in doses of 0,3 g Fe 3+/l and 3,0 g H2O2 /l to 0,6 g Fe3+/l and 6,0 g H2O2/l. Limiting values of COD in the experimental variants was approximately 70,0% while the concentration of formaldehyde close to 60,0%. If dispensing the water only Fe3+ ions obtained the highest efficiency and reduce the COD concentration of formaldehyde was 28,3% sequentially and 14,5%. The final concentrations of the analyzed indicators of pollution, if only H2O2 dosing were similar to their concentrations in raw wastewater.

Oxidative pretreatment methods such as the Fenton oxidation, ozonation, and photocatalytic treatment have been compared in reducing adsorbable organic halogens (AOX) and chlorophenolic compounds in untreated kraft pulp bleaching effluent. Their efficiency was also studied on effluent ultrafiltration fractions. The Fenton treatment removed all analyzed chlorophenolic compounds from the effluent. Ozonation and photocatalysis appeared to be much less effective methods. The efficiency of the Fenton oxidation appeared to be more pronounced in higher molecular weight effluent fractions. This suggests a novel design, where the filtration stage can be placed after the oxidation, and the high-molecular weight fraction is returned to the Fenton treatment.

In this studies the influence of the dose and ratio of chemical reagents (Fe2+ and H2O2) on the efficiency of COD removal and changes of BOD5/COD ratio in landfill leachate was analysed. The molar Fe2+/H2O2 ratio was lower than 1 and amounted to: 1:10, 1:5, 1:3, three research series with 1; 2.5 and 5 g/L Fe2+ concentration. A higher efficiency in removing BOD than COD, and therefore the decrease of BOD5/COD ratio in effluent was stated. The efficiency of COD removal from leachate was from 58.34% (Fe2+ 0.5 g/L, Fe22+/H2O2 1:5) to 8.33% (Fe2+ = 0.1 g/L, Fe2+/H2O2 = 1:10), while the efficiency of BOD removal ranged from 62 to 77%. With the molar ratio Fe2+/H2O2 equal 1:5 the BOD5/COD ratio was the largest for each of the analysed Fe2+ doses. The lowest BOD5/COD ratio was observed for the Fe2+ dose 0.1 g/L and molar ratio of reagents 1:3.

Chemical oxidation processes: Fenton process and catalytic ozonation with Mn2+ ions were investigated for effectiveness of formaldehyde (FA) oxidation. The influence of operational variables — O3, H2O2, Mn2+ and Fe2+ concentrations and reaction time were investigated. Researches were carried out on aqueous solution of FA, which concentration was 500 mg/l. Fenton process was investigated at pH 3 and catalytic ozonation at pH 7, 10 and 12. Results revealed that Fenton process was much more effective in FA degradation than catalytic ozonation with Mn2+ as a catalyst. The optimal H2O2/Fe2+ dosage for a Fenton process was 2000/1000 mg/l. COD and FA concentrations were reduced 59,6% and 79,5%. In case of catalytic ozonation with Mn2+ the eff ectiveness was much less and it was the biggest at pH 12 and Mn2+ dosage 25 mg/l where COD and FA concentration were reduced 14% and 38%. Therefore, Fenton process can be promising technology for FA wastewater pretreatment.

Opis:
The choice of the optimal method of municipal waste landfill leachate treatment should take into account such factors as: the variability of their composition and quantity over time, requirements for effluent or economic capacity. Due to the variety of compounds found in landfill leachate, it is advised to use a combination of different treatment processes. Biological methods are effective in the treatment of leachates from young landfills, but generally their efficiency declines significantly with the age of the landfill. Therefore, the physicochemical methods, i.e. advanced oxidation, adsorption, membrane methods or a combination of the mentioned, are preferred. The aim of the study was the assessment of the Fenton’s reagent utilization to process reverse osmosis concentrate of leachates collected from municipal non-hazardous waste landfill. The research was focused on the influence of pH on the process. Additionally, the effectiveness of organic compounds removal, increasing the biodegradability, as well as humic substances transformations were determined. The concentrations of humic compounds were measured by means of optical density at the wavelengths: 254, 265, 280, 320, 465 and 665 nm. In the experiment, the H2O2/Fe2+ 10: 1 ratio was tested at with a dose of H2O2 equal to 3.4 g/l (0.1 M). It was found that the pH affects the efficiency of COD removal and the increase of the biodegradability of the landfill leachate retentate, as well as the removal of humic substances and its transformation. It was found that at pH 3, the highest removal of COD occurs, with simultaneous increase in biodegradability, and decrease of absorbance caused by humic compounds.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań utleniania fenolu w procesie foto-Fentona z zastosowaniem heterogenicznego katalizatora Co-Clin (naturalny klinoptylolit, modyfikowany jonami Co(II)).

Opis:
The dairy industry is one of the most polluting of industries, not only in terms of the volume of effluent generated, but also in terms of its characteristics as well. The composition of waste water produced in the milk processing plants depends primarily on the type of production (such as fluid milk, butter, cheese, buttermilk, whey, yogurt, condensed milk, flavored milk, milk powder, ice cream, etc.). The factors influencing the composition and charge of waste water are the raw materials used, level of technology plant, cleaning and disinfection processes and the amount of water used. Still increased pollution, combined with increased industrial activity and increasingly restrictive laws concerning discharges, focuses on the problem of optimal industry wastewater treatment. High concentration of organic matter in dairy wastewater causes problems with their removal in biological methods. Combining advanced oxidation process (AOP) and biological process has received attention in recent years as a promising alternative for industrial wastewater treatment. Among biological treatment processes the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) have been widely applied for treating dairy wastewater. The advantages of this technology can include high flexibility and ease of adaptation of operating parameters. Sequencing batch reactor is the name given to wastewater treatment systems based on activated sludge, operated on a sequence changes of anaerobic and aerobic conditions in one reactor. Using AOP pretreatment is important to improve the biodegradability and produce an effluent that can be treated biologically These processes involve the generation of highly free radicals, mainly hydroxyl radical (HO) via chemical, photochemical and photocatalytic reactions. One of the most important AOP process is Fenton reaction. Effectiveness of Fenton reaction has been confirmed in the case of pharmaceutical wastewater, treatment of brines or treatment of paper pulp manufacturing effluents. The oxidation system based on the Fenton’s reagent (hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a ferrous salt under acidic conditions) has been used for the treatment of both organic and inorganic substances of the wastewater stream. The present study was aimed to treat the dairy wastewater by Fenton’s process and an aerobic sequencing batch reactor. The first part of this study examined the effect of operating conditions on Fenton`s process pretreatment of dairy wastewater. The effectiveness of the AOP pretreatment was assessed by evaluating wastewater biodegradability enhancement (BOD5/COD), as well as monitoring major pollutant concentrations (COD) with reaction time. The optimum dose Fe2+ and H2O2 was found to be 1.2 and 2.0 g/L, respectively. In a single biological treatment the average removal efficiencies of COD, and NH4+ were 67%, and 61%, respectively. Integration of Fenton`s process and biological treatment resulted in 93% removal of COD and 79% NH4+ from the dairy wastewater. The results indicated that the combined process would be a promising alternative for the treatment of dairy wastewater.

Opis:
Laboratory wastewater contains organic and inorganic compounds that are harmful to the environment when disposed of without prior treatment. Besides the high COD and BOD values, the laboratory wastewater also contains metals such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) which is categorized as dangerous waste material and can pollute the groundwater. Although the quantity of wastewater produced by the laboratory is relatively small, it has a real impact on the environment around the laboratory. However, the wastewater has to be treated properly before being discharged into the environment. The aim of the research was to study the laboratory wastewater treatment by using Fenton’s reagent with coagulation and adsorption pretreatment. In the pretreatment with coagulation, three types of coagulants are used, namely PAC (Poly Aluminum Chloride), ACH (Aluminum Chlorohydrate) and Aluminum Sulfate (AS) with their respective concentrations of 10–80 ppm. The highest percentage of average pollutant removal of 58.21% was found when 80 ppm of AS was applied. The pretreatment was continued by adsorption with activated carbon and zeolite adsorbents within 60–120 minutes of mixing time. It was detected that the most optimum adsorbent was activated carbon with average pollutant removal of 50.22% within 1 hour of mixing time. Processing was extended by utilized Fenton’s reagent using a variation of the molar ratio between 1:100 and 1:400. It was obtained that the best molar ratio to degrade the laboratory wastewater is 1:300 with an average removal of pollutant of 43.45%. As a result of laboratory wastewater treatment using combine Fenton’s reagent and coagulation-adsorption pretreatment, an average pollutant removal of 90.81% was obtained. The final content of COD, BOD, TSS, as well as Cu and Pb metal has met the environmental quality standard.
