Opis:
The aim of this paper is to define and to analyse the fantastic universe of short stories by Manuel Baixauli published in the volume Espiral (2010), an original and highly significant example of modern fantastic literature that has abolished the real and imaginary borders, that is to say a significant example of fantastic literature conceived as a language phenomenon. The conception of reality integrates and naturalises the supernatural and the irrational in a vision that joins multiple dimensions and perspectives of reality. The self-referential component is also of essential importance in this fantastic, which assimilates and exhibits themes and motifs of inherited traditions in a fully conscious way.Baixauli reflects on the ways of perception and representation of reality, in a proposal in which he combines elements that come from some forms of genre whithin the fantastic tradition. And he does it with full awareness of the linguistic and cultural condition of the referents he uses, exploring implicit meanings, metaphorical value, expectations they generate, etc. A literature that, from the point of view of fantastic literature, opts for hybridism and self-reference.

Opis:
In Poland, research-related fanzines rarely include writings edited by Polish fans of science fiction, horror and fantasy. Active fans edited amateur magazines which were very important because they popularized fantastic literature and culture in Poland. The role of fantastic fanzines was not limited solely to the promotion of amateur creativity or publishing translations of foreign fiction not available on the market, but also consisted in the creation of creative bonds between writers and readers. The remnants of the activities of Polish fantastic fiction fans are about one hundred titles including “Quasar”, “Red Dwarf” and “Other Planets”. These three fanzines as effects of pure amateur work are also very similar to the professional magazines. Each of them has a different poetics and thematic dominant. They have also published stories written by famous Polish writers such as Ewa Białołęcka and Andrzej Sapkowski.

The article analyzes the connections between the questions of ecology and the formal presentations of landscape and topography in the dystopian prose of Paolo Bacigalupi. He models his literary world – the Earth in no so distant future – along the following framework. Today’s toponomastics refers to the places which have been transformed by eco-climatic disasters and devastated by modern economy on many platforms: geographical, political and biological. The shift of the widely recognizable world maps (geographical, physical, economic) underlies Bacigalupi’s literary constructs. On the one hand, it corresponds with the authorial analyses of socio-political-economic and civilization-ethical transformations around which his stories revolve. On the other, this change evokes in the reader the sense of alienation and, consequently, threat.

The article shows the importance of a tale “Breughel à l’Yser” in the context of the Franz Hellens’ identity transformation which takes place during the First World War. On the one hand, in his tale Hellens refers by different means to the Breughel’s oeuvre continuing in that way the myth of Belgian writer perceived as a heir of the Flemish painters. On the other hand, via the landscape, the typical element of the Flemish master’s style, the writer introduces the elements of fantasy into a realistic description of a battlefield, creating in that way his own aesthetics of “fantastique reel” (fantastic reality). Thus, this tale enables to examine how Hellens passes fluently from the “inherited identity” to the mature writer’s identity.

Introduction. A healthy lifestyle can help older people maintain their functional ability and, therefore, satisfaction with life. An important aspect of health promotion is the assessment of lifestyle factors over which patients have some control. Objective. The aim of this study was to analyze the lifestyle of the elderly in urban and rural areas using the Fantastic Life Inventory (FLI). Materials and method. The research group comprised 138 people aged 65–94 years (M = 72.41, SD = 6.90). Participants were recruited from urban 78 (56.5%) and rural 60 (43.5%) areas. The FLI used in this study has 25 closed-ended questions that explore nine domains, including physical, psychological, and social lifestyle components. Results. The overall lifestyle of most seniors was ‘excellent’ (45.7%) or ‘very good’ (41.3%); none of the respondents scored in the lowest category – ‘needs improvement’. The domains that mostly demonstrated the need for a change were related to activity, nutrition, insight, sleep, stress. Participants from rural areas tended to have lower scores in the activity (p= 0.017) and nutrition (p= 0.015) domains. The lifestyle of the elderly is determined by several factors, including age, gender, health status, level of education, and the place of residence. Conclusion. The majority of older persons demonstrated an ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’ lifestyle with healthy habits. The adoption of healthy lifestyle patterns, in particular a regular balanced diet and proper physical activity, can help prevent functional limitations among the elderly in rural areas.

Opis:
In the article the author examines fantastic novels by contemporary Polish writers (Andrzej Maleszka, Paweł Beręsowicz, Rafał Kosik and other) for young readers in a cultural context. In his essay he uses two well-known cultural categories “myth” and “magic” to his analysis of fantastic novels. According to the author, the myth and magic have two important functions in fantastic children’s literature. First, they lead young readers to knowledge about the world and depict different, complex phenomena of cultural dimension. Second, the myth and magic create a particular space (what “engulfs” young readers) of play and entertainment. Moreover, the myth and magic attract young readers to fabulous worlds including the elements of realistic literary convention. Thereby the writers increase their credibility among the youth. A “myth-magic” in the presented word of contemporary Polish fantastic novels assures balance between incredible entertainment represented by wizards, witches, dragons and the real world with characters having various digital devices within reach.

Opis:
The article John Crowley’s “Engine Summer”: A Postmodern Vision of the Processual Construction of Identity analyses the eponymous novel as pivoted around the narrative’s role in constructing both individual and collective identity. Drawing from Mieke Bal’s narrative theory, as well as a number of established (such as paratextuality) and emerging theoretical concepts (Piotr Kubiński’s emersion), Gancarczyk emphasises the multifacetedness of novelistic references, including the stereotypisation of the Other and top-down control of social relationships. Furthermore, Engine Summer is interpreted here as drawing the reader’s attention to the medium itself and to the embodied text which co-creates narrative identity, allowing for its inscription and transmission—an idea literally realised in a postapocalyptic world of the novel. Finally, Gancarczyk shows how Campbell’s concept of monomyth reverberates in Crowley’s narrative, proving pivotal for the overall interpretation, indicating the active role of the medium and narrative subjectivity in constructing the meaning.

The paper analyses three works employing a similar narrative strategy which triggers tension between the explicable and inexplicable and an interpretative crisis that allows a fantastic reading of the fictional text. This strategy is related to the paradoxical status of the narrator, due to which the reader is faced with an incomplete elliptic account because of the former’s reluctance (or impossibility) to offer a definite interpretation of the events.

This article examines the structure of Maurice Sandoz’s novel Le Labyrinthe (The Maze) in order to determine to what extent that novel belongs to the fantastic genre. Drawing on classical theories of the fantastic, the present article demonstrates that Sandoz’s Labyrinthe raises terminological issues, since it contains elements that canonical theories consider as fantastiques but also merveilleux (Todorov, Caillois). A detailed analysis of the Sandozian forewords’ characteristics makes it possible to show that the author plays with the notions of limit and hesitation. The latter are crucial in the seminal theories on the fantastique and are at the core of the Sandozian strategy that consists in the blurring of the boundaries between author, narrator, narrative, and “reality”. This study constitutes a first step towards a more detailed analysis of Sandoz’s fantastique and its goal is to underlines the necessity of a perspective shift in the comprehension thereof.

Opis:
This article refers to a “fantastic” period in Zdzisław Beksiński’s painting (1929-2005). The quest for the sources of imagination of this original Polish artist has a broad cultural background. Its horizons are marked by Marcel Brion and Roger Caillois’s research on fantasy as well as G. R. Hocke’s assertion regarding the epoch of mannerism. Taking the above into consideration, it can be stated that imagination has an achronological character and in the case of the herein described painter it was a determinant of his aesthetic style and artistic attitude. His specific creative technique involved breaking with the order of reality, bordering on a dream and using the mannerist-like rhetorical figures. Beksiński’s “fantastic realism” was based on oneiric visions transferred into small drawing sketches. Their range encompassed unconscious elements, dream and nightmare iconography and a-logical narrative structures, which the artist complemented, added nuances and subsequently developed while working on his paintings. Specific motifs, forms and palette of colours and matter encroach on the presence of those primary visions – the authentic “pictures form under eyelids”. However, their anteriority in the act of creation was indisputable. They carried a special meaning for Beksiński by summarising intense sensations derived from reality and dreams, he could, just for a moment, project himself beyond the material world and the reigning of the passing time.
