Opis:
In the years of 1784-1871 the university in Lvov was re-opened as a German Josephine University with the following faculties: Philosophical, Theological, Legal, and Medical. In the initial period of the 19th century the then professors did not conduct a more reliable and systematic research on the history of the Church. The history of the Church, nevertheless, was regularly lectured within the schedule of the particular faculties. The following father professors worked then: J. B. Fisinger, A. Bielecki, F. K. Zachariasiewicz, O. Krynicki, J.Delkiewicz, and others. From the 1960s onwards the university was gradually polonised, and in 1871 it became a Polish university at which the Ukrainian language had the same rights. It was only then that historians started research mainly on the period of the Middle Ages, including the origins of the Church in the world and in Poland. Works were written that discussed the organisational and political relations between the Church and the state during the first centuries. It was then that biographies of the first Polish bishops, archbishops, lives of the saints, the first papers characterising some pontificates, history of the papacy and the relations between the Polish Republic and the Vatican, together with some more reliable works on the history of the Eastern Church. At the Philosophical Faculty in the period of positivism there were the following departments: of universal history, of Austria, of Poland and modern history. The department of universal history was conducted from 1863 on by H. Zeissberg, then K. Liske. In the years of 1891-1914 it was run by R. Dembiński, who specialised in the history of the Church, studied the history of papacy and its position towards Poland. The department of the history of Austria was run from 1871 on by I. Szaraniewicz; he studied mainly the history of Russia and the Eastern Church. The history of the Church, the legal aspect of its existence and activity, remained in the field of interest of the scholars working at the Faculty of Law: E. Rittner and J. Kasznica. Their heritage was taken over in 1888 by the canon law professor W. Abraham, one of the then most eminent experts on the history of the Church at Lvov University. A separate department of the history of the Church was established at the Faculty of Theology. In this department lectures were delivered by Rev. J. Delkiewicz and Rev. E. Skrochowski. From 1895 to 1912 Rev. J. Fijałek worked in this department, an eminent historian of the Church, the author of numerous publications on the history of the Catholic and Eastern Churches, on the law and church organisation, on the Scriptures, and on the devotion to the Mother of God, and many others. Professors of Lvov University in the 19th century initiated pioneer researches on the history of the Church in Poland; many of their publications are relevant still today.

In 1397 Pope Boniface IX, at the request of King Władysław Jagiełło and his wife Saint Jadwiga (Hedvig), Queen of Poland, called into being a Faculty of Theology in Studium Generale in Kraków. Scientific talents and hard work together with universal support of the state and Church authorities set the young faculty on its feet immediately. The period of the first hundred years was a golden age in the development of the Faculty. It rapidly won fame not only in Poland but also in all Europe, mainly because of the speeches of its theologians at the Councils of Constance and Basle. The fame of Kraków theologians spread throughout Europe during the period of the Council of Basle. During the period of the Reformation, professors of the university, then called the Kraków Academy, were involved in defence of the Catholic Church. During the Council of Trent (1545–1563) in the university circles there appeared splendid works impugning the Protestant and neo-Arian views. The codification of dogmas at the Council of Trent facilitated the teaching methods and acceptance of Summa Theologica by St. Thomas Aquinas as the best interpretation of the Christian outlook. In 1795, Poland was completely erased from the map of Europe, torn and divided between Prussia, Russia and Austria. Kraków came under the sway of the Austrians, beginning a difficult period for the Faculty of Theology and the whole University. The Austrian system concerning politics and the Church, called Josephinism, was damaging to the theological studies there. The re-organisation of the Faculty in 1880 was very crucial. It restored full academic rights, and the increasing number of chairs initiated a period of intense re-building of the University’s role in Polish culture, which it had enjoyed in the 15th–16th centuries. In 1880–1939, the Faculty experienced something similar to a second spring, comparable with its golden 15th century. The successful development of the Faculty was dramatically interrupted by the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 and the following gehenna of the Nazi occupation. After the war, the struggle with the Church, atheistic policy and laicisation planned by the communist government prevented a normal development of the Faculty outright. The faculty’s existence was in jeopardy. The threat of liquidation appeared unavoidable and then it became fact. The Council of Ministers of the Polish People’s Republic by its unilateral decision of 1954, without any agreement with the Church, connected the Faculty of Theology of the Jagiellonian University to the Faculty of Catholic Theology of Warsaw University to form the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw, which had just been created by the government. The Faculty of Theology in Kraków survived as an independent faculty due to the uncompromising attitude of the Apostolic See and the Kraków bishops. In 1974 the Faculty, functioning within the Metropolitan Seminary, was bestowed the title ‘pontifical.’ A turning point in the history of the Faculty was its re-structuring as an academy with three faculties. In 1981, Pope John Paul II established the Pontifical Academy of Theology. In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI elevated it to the John Paul II Pontifical University.

After World War II at the Theological Faculty of Jagiellonian University in Cracow the dissertations in the area of the Holy Scripture were written by thirty two priests. Dissertations connected with the Bible were written at the seminar of Biblical Study of the Old Testament and at the seminar of Biblical Science of the New Testament. The priests wrote them under the guidance of the following lecturers: rev. Józef Kaczmarczyk, rev. Aleksy Klawek, rev. Władysław Smereka and rev. Piotr Stach. Twelve theses concerned issuses connected with the Old Testament, nineteen with the New Testament. One dissertation had both the Old and the New Testament connections. Most of papers were the translations from original languages with the comments of some parts of the Bible. Some of the priests with doctorates were employed at the theological departments of Polish universities and in seminaries. Doctors promoted by Theological Faculty of Jagiellonion University had great impact on the development of biblical thought and popularization of the Holy Scripture among the faithful in Poland in the second half of XX century.

Opis:
In 1919, in a Poland reborn after years of partitions, Poznań University was established and according to the intention of its founders one of the faculties was to be the Faculty of Theology, created by the University Senate and approved by the Apostolic See. However, this faculty was not launched. The author of the article, on the basis of Vatican archives shows the active role of Archbishop Dalbor, who in his abundant correspondence and personal conversations with Nuncio A. Ratti and Cardinal G. Bisleti tried to convince the Apostolic See to the project of the Poznań academic circles. Another important conclusion from the study of the archives is a positive assessment of the role of the Apostolic Nuncio in Warsaw. Finally, the author formulates the hypothesis that the main reason why the Faculty of Theology did not undertake its activity was the decision of the Congregation for Seminaries and Universities (later the Congregation for Catholic Education) which in the initial phase of the project precluded the possibility of seminarists taking up theological studies at the Faculty. It appears that the Apostolic See overlooked the historical moment which created an opportunity for the realization of the aspirations of the Poznań academic  milieu.

In the period of the Second Republic of Poland two attempts – unfortunately unsuccessful – were undertaken to organize the teaching of theology at university level in Poznań. Endeavors to create a Theological Faculty at Poznań University in the years 1919-1921 did not bring the expected effects. In 1937 Cardinal August Hlond addressed a plea to the Apostolic See to reinstate the Lubrański Academy in Poznań. The Primate’s vision included the construction of a modern building of the academy which he saw as his personal gift to the archdiocese and a “remembrance” of his primateship. The article takes up the above mentioned issue in the light of the Vatican’s archival materials. They allow us to grasp some essential historical facts and provide access to the drafts of the statutes of the intended reactivated Academy. Their publication herein seems to be an interesting contribution to the outlining of a complete history of the Faculty of Theology in Poznań.

Faculty of Theology of Stefan Batory University, whose professors also left Vilnius, resumed activity that day. Most of the lecturers of Vilnius Alma Mater moved to Torun, where they founded the Nicolaus Copernicus University, but professors of the Faculty of Theology who were also the lecturers of the Seminary remained in Bialystok. The Seminary at the Slonimska Street functioned until 1961 when the political authorities nationalized the building and gave it to the Education Supervision Body. The seminar had to leave the premises and search new premises for its operations. The seminar life was focused around the Church. Of St. Wojciech, which became a temple of the seminar.

Cardinal Karol Wojtyła had a considerable impact on the development of the universal and local Church, strengthening the bond between the Churches of the Metropolis of Krakow. The pontificate of John Paul II gave a new direction of the papacy by opening the Church to ethical, moral, philosophical and social problems. Encyclicals, exhortations, addresses, pastoral letters and the whole pastoral and theological heritage of the Holy Father have been an incentive to undertake further research by academics and students of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Silesia in Katowice. The results of these studies are reflected in the pages of “Śląskie Studia Historyczno-Teologiczne” and the dissertations of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Silesia. The problems addressed by the Pope have inspired the local academic community to reflect on the papal teaching.

W artykule niniejszym nakreślono szkic historyczny czasopisma „Polonia Sacra”. Uczyniono to w stulecie ukazania się pierwszego numeru. Czasopismo to powstało jako organ naukowy Towarzystwa im. Papieża Benedykta XV-go w roku 1918.
commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first issue. The journal was created as an organ of the Pope Benedict XV Association in 1918. After the dissolution of the Association in 1925, the periodical was taken over entirely by Fr. Jan Nepomucen Fijałek and it was published under the title „Nova Polonia Sacra”. The outbreak of World War II suspended the publication of the journal. Restarted in 1948 as an organ of the Faculty of Theology of the Jagiellonian University, it received a new title – „Polonia Sacra: a theological quarterly”. After the shutdown of theological faculties at Polish universities by the communist authorities and the transfer of the Faculty of Theology from the Jagiellonian University to the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw, the periodical became an organ of the Faculty of Law and it was published in 1954 – 1958 under the title „Polonia Sacra: a historical and canonical quarterly”. The journal was re-established under the original name of „Polonia Sacra” in 1997 at the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Kraków (since 2009 the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Kraków).

Opis:
Posiadały one wspólną czytelnię i zbiory liczące 11147 woluminów (w 1950 r.). W 1999 r. księgozbiór został przeniesiony do Coll. Jana Pawła II. W 2013 r. nasze zbiory liczyły niespełna 38 tysięcy woluminów. W 2014 r. włączono w stuktury Biblioteki Wydziału Teologii – Bibliotekę Instytutu Teologii Pastoralnej. Obecnie zbiory biblioteki wynoszą 62931 woluminów, a roczna liczba odwiedzin w czytelni to 24 tysiące (dane z 30.09.2015).
The Theological Library was established at the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) in 1920, soon after the foundation of the Faculty of Theology. During the World War II the books were preserved outside of KUL. After that, the collections was divided into biblical, dogmatic, moral, fundamental theology and history of the Church sections. In 1950 there was only one common reading room with the collections of 11,147 volumes. The needs increased in 1957, when the program of theological studies for lay people started. In 1970, there were 8 specialized departmental collections, handled by one librarian. In 1999 the Theological Library was transferred to the John Paul II College. In 2013 there were almost 38 thousand volumes. In 2014, after the integration with the Library of the Institute of Pastoral Theology, our collection counts 62931 volumes with 24 thousand visitors in the reading room. The Theological Library is the meeting place for researchers and students. There are workshops, expositions and once a year the final exams for license in theology. But the scientific information is its main activity. The old card catalog and 51% bibliographic descriptions of collections have been digitalized (Virtua system). 80% of resources are in Polish language but the number of books in English is growing due to the presence of English speaking doctoral candidates. The Theological Library is the integral part of Faculty of Theology and receives full support from its administration.

Opis:
In 1954, arbitrarily and without consulting with the Catholic Church, the communist authorities transferred the Faculties of Theology of the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw to a new university that they had created without a canonical mandate – the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw. Instead of accepting the Polish communists’ unilateral decision, the Holy See transferred the rights of the Faculty of Theology in Krakow to the Archdiocesan Major Seminary, whose faculty eventually was given the right to have the adjective “Pontifical” in its title. Although it did not have authority from the state, it continued to offer post-secondary education and bestow academic titles upon its graduates. On the basis of this, Pope John Paul II, who as the Archbishop of Krakow was not only officially its great chancellor but also its promoter and special custodian, established the Pontifical Academy of Theology in 1981. This article presents the history of the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in 1954-1982. Its activity in later years as the Pontifical Academy of Theology, which in 2009 became the Pontifical University of John Paul II, will be presented in the second part of this text.

Opis:
In 1950, Catholic faculties of theology on the territory of the present-day Czech Republic were unilaterally excluded from the university structures by statute, despite their frequent affiliation with universities from the beginning. Until 1990, the only official theological faculty was the Saints Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology in Prague, with its seat in Litoměřice (the branch of which was partially located in Olomouc in 1968-1974 as an actually operating facility). The reincorporation of those faculties was not possible until 1990, after the Velvet Revolution. Since then we observe a gradual growth of theological faculties and a search for their unique place within the Czech society. The article recapitulates the process of their isolation and reincorporation in the historical and canon law perspective. However, the Church’s establishment of theological faculties is again one of the many manifestations of the autonomy of the Church and religious organisations, which is guaranteed by law in the current legal order of the Czech Republic.
