    The Covid 19 era presents yet another instance of the symbiosis between viral pandemic and pestilence in the political culture of the moment. Through a brief reprise of plague-riven history dating from antiquity, this article explores the symptoms of the current epidemic and offers a number of keywords that characterize the current maladies as viral plague and as political pestilence. The coupling of the viral and the political dates from the third century Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius who took the measure of the plague and political corruption of Rome during his reign. The lexical compendium offered here could constitute a study in cultural epidemiology that defines the exhibited symptoms of pandemic disease in its concurrent medical and socio-cultural manifestations.

    Black women do not want to become white women because they know that this is impossible. Yet, some black women straighten and curl their naturally kinky hair, or wear hair extensions, weaves and wigs that resemble Caucasian hair. Still, they recognize that hair is only one attribute of their Being and that even if they choose to wear non-African hairstyles, they can concurrently embrace other aspects of their black identity. So, is this a matter of cultural assimilation or integration, or is there a deeper ontological problematic underlying these cross-racial hair styling choices? I interrogate three arguments that black women usually advance for their hairstyling choices – the survival strategy argument, the protective styling argument, and the options-choice argument. I use Mabogo Percy More’s interpretation of Jean-Paul Sartre’s concepts of “the Look,” “facticity,” and “bad faith” to analyze Black women’s hair consciousness through the lens of his “Politics of Being” concept.

    This article investigates Augustine’s reflection on the death of his friend in Confessiones IV. A critical treatment of this passage discloses the three key themes which will form the main substance of the analysis: self-presence, the contingency of being, and divine absence. Integrating philosophical and theological methodologies with an historical-critical treatment of Augustine’s work, this article relates Augustine’s insights to his foregoing classical context and his reception in posterity, with particular attention to Lucius Annaeus Seneca (ca. 4 BCE-65 CE) and Martin Heidegger (1889-1976). This investigation shows that these three figures are connected by an appreciation of how self-presence and ontological instability are constant facets of human life, though easily neglected. Each advocates a curriculum of philosophical training, whereby one learns to pacify the mind by an awareness of the true nature of mundane reality. This research contributes to the renewed appreciation of how the therapeutic aspects of classical philosophy influenced early Christian authors; illuminates a key episode in Augustine’s life en route to his conversion to Christianity; and raises questions about the “apophatic” dimensions of Augustine’s theology and anthropology.

    Artykuł stawia tezę, że według Jean-Yves Lacoste’a zapomnienie bycia prowadzi do zagrożenia bycia. Problem zapomnienia bycia pojawia się we wczesnych dziełach Lacoste’a, jednak dopiero w książce Présence et parousie filozof po raz pierwszy przedstawia go szeroko w kontekście możliwości więcej niż egzystencji. Zwracając uwagę na fenomeny stanowiące aberrację w stosunku do bycia-w-świecie, takie jak: radość, nadzieja i liturgia, pokazuje, że bycie wykazuje nadmiar. Na tej podstawie autor niniejszego artykułu dochodzi do wniosku, że nadmiar bycia w stosunku do świata pokazuje, że nie ma w świecie nic, co przeczyłoby możliwości bycia-wobec-Boga. W książce Être en danger Jean-Yves Lacoste rozwija koncepcję zapomnienia bycia jako bycia-w-zagrożeniu. Na jej podstawie autor artykułu stawia tezę, że zapomnienie nie tyle zagraża byciu, co pokazuje, że bycie jest raczej niedostępne niż dostępne. Nadmiar niedostępnego w stosunku do dostępnego w byciu pokazuje, że nie ma w nim nic, co przeczyłoby możliwości pełni bycia. Na koniec autor stawia tezę, że pamięć o byciu otwiera możliwość ostatecznego, czyli eschatologicznego rozumienia bycia. Bycie jest wolą bycia, a nie tylko bycia po części. Dlatego możliwość pełni bycia jest wpisana w bycie i z konieczności się spełnia, prowadząc bycie do rozumienia siebie w kategoriach definitywnych, czyli eschatologicznych, a nie jedynie prowizorycznych. Pełnia bycia natomiast to Bóg. Dlatego bycie jest wolą bycia-wobec-Boga o wiele bardziej niż bycia-w-świecie.
    This paper argues that, according to Jean-Yves Lacoste, oblivion of being is danger to being. Although the issue of the oblivion of being appears in his early works, it was only in Présence et parousie that he fully developed his view in the context of the possibility of more than existence. Pointing out the phenomena which seem to be aberrations with respect to being-in-the-world, he concludes that there is an excess of being. This paper contends that the excess of being with respect to the world shows that there is nothing in the world that could contradict the possibility of being-towards-God. In Être en danger, Jean-Yves Lacoste develops the concept of the oblivion of being as being-in-danger. Contrary to Lacoste, this paper suggests that oblivion is not a threat to being. Instead, it shows that being is rather unavailable than available. The excess of the unavailable with respect to the available in being shows that there is nothing in being which could contradict the possibility of the fullness of being. Ultimately, the author argues that memory of being opens the possibility of the definitive or eschatological understanding of being. Being is the will of being. It is not the will of being to a certain extent, hence the will of being partially. Therefore, the possibility of the fullness of being is intrinsic to being and can be considered a principle which fulfils itself, providing being with a self-understanding that is definitive, hence eschatological, rather than provisional. Because God is the fullness of being, being in itself is the will of being-towards-God rather than the will of being-in-the-world.

    The article describes a corpus research with its theoretical background. The basis of our research is a press corpus with 27 million tokens, where the epistemic terms are annotated. The grammatical and lexical epistemic expression are consistently kept apart on the basis of the relevant literature. The next step is to investigate with a fully automatic method which expressions often occur together in a text. Semantic subclasses of epistemic expressions are defined on the basis of these quantitatively proven solidarities. Finally, concrete examples illustrate how the epistemic expressions structure the text.
    Im Beitrag wird eine Korpusuntersuchung mit ihrem theoretischen Hintergrund beschrieben. In einem 27 Millionen Tokens starken Pressekorpus werden die epistemischen Ausdrücke annotiert. Die grammatikalisierten und lexikalischen epistemischen Ausdrucksmittel werden aufgrund der einschlägigen Literatur konsequent auseinandergehalten. Im nächsten Schritt wird mit einer vollautomatischen Methode untersucht, welche Ausdrücke häufig gemeinsam in einem Text auftreten. Aufgrund dieser quantitativ nachgewiesenen Solidaritäten werden semantische Subklassen epistemischer Ausdrücke definiert. Anschließend wird anhand konkreter Textbeispiele gezeigt, wie die epistemischen Ausdrücke den Text strukturieren.

    Opis:
    The purpose of this essay is to present several important changes in the sphere of modern experience and the strategies of the neo-avant-garde which correspond to them. Subversive practices of the avant-garde, as well as the neo-avant-garde, are inscribed in the new systems of cultural functionalization, which in many of their manifestations, on the one hand, lead to the loss of art’s critical potential. On the other hand, however, the potency and the staying power of the avant-garde in its new form – despite numerous declarations of its death – lie in its critical re-immersion in contemporary human experience and in preserving the tension between engagement and critical distance characteristic of the experience of late modernity. This, however, requires the reworking of the old formulas of anti-modernist protest and the fragile alliances with postmodernism.
    Zamierzeniem niniejszego szkicu jest wskazanie na kilka ważnych dla zmian zachodzących w polu nowoczesnego doświadczenia i odpowiadających im strategii neoawangardy. Awangardowe, jak również neoawangardowe praktyki subwersywne wpisują się w nowe systemy kulturowej funkcjonalizacji, które w ich wielu przejawach prowadzą – z jednej strony – do utraty potencjału krytycznego sztuki. Jednakże z drugiej strony siła oddziaływania i moc przetrwania awangardy w nowej formule, wbrew licznym konstatacjom jej śmierci, po przepracowaniu dawnych formuł jej anty-modernistycznego protestu i kruchych przymierzach z postmodernizmem, tkwi w jej ponownym, krytycznym zanurzeniu się w doświadczeniach współczesnego człowieka. W przechowywaniu przez nią napięcia między zaangażowaniem i krytycznym dystansem cechującego późnonowoczesne doświadczenie.

    The concept of facticity that was developed by Heidegger from 1919 to 1923 composes the basis of all his further thought: the conceptions of Dasein and ontological temporality will originate namely from this concept. The article analyzes various expressions of the factitious life (care, Er-eignis, life, Self- Destruction, meaningfulness, death), yet the special consideration is paid to its religious aspects. Really the essence of facticity is treated by Heidegger as a temporality that is essentially correlated with the Christian experience. The influence of Saint Augustine to Heidegger and the Heideggerian concept of methodical atheism are analyzed and this analysis raises the intricate problem of the relation of the Black Forest philosopher to Christian faith and to God.

    In the text Agamben’s theoretical project serves as a negative point of reference for the messianic vitalism of Agata Bielik-Robson. The aim is to indicate a tension characteristic of the “dynamic anthropology”, which could be equal to a subtle dialectics of strength and fragility, necessity and potency treated as “moments” of human being. Viewed from this perspective, Agamben’s narration seems melancholic because of its tendency to celebrate pure potentiality with a resentment towards facticity. It conceals the gnostic angst of occupying any position. As a consequence nuda vita genuinly becomes vulnerable to the sovereign power and the domination of death. Messianic vitalism not only avoids such downsides, but also is able to use them to its advantage, since it is at the same time a foundation of a concrete civilisation project and – which is more expressed in my article – a lynchpin of a sublime art of living.
