It is argued that a renewed reception of the works of the Polish and American scholar should be furthered by the cultural turn in sociology. If the new cultural sociology is to get firm grounds it should go beyond the reaction against structural-functional normativism in search of classic studies of cultural dynamics as those of Florian Znaniecki. The authoress examines the reasons for blurring the influence of Znaniecki on 20th century sociologists, including Talcott Parsons and Alfred Schütz, and presents an overall review of his contribution to cultural sociology.
Oddziaływanie nowej, amerykańskiej socjologii kulturowej powinno sprzyjać pełnej recepcji klasycznej socjologii kulturowej. Tak zwany zwrot kulturowy w socjologii najnowszej nie spowodował jednak szerszego upowszechnienia perspektywy wskazanej przez Floriana Znanieckiego badania dynamiki kultury, ogranicza się bowiem do reakcji przeciwko strukturalno-funkcjonalnemu normatywizmowi. W artykule przedstawiany jest wpływ twórczości Znanieckiego na socjologią XX wieku, w tym na teorię struktur alno-funkcjonalną Talcotta Parsonsa i fenomenologię społeczną Alfreda Schiitza, a przede wszystkim na ukształtowanie orientacji kulturalistycznej w socjologii. Analizowane są przyczyny stopniowego osłabiania oddziaływania tej spuścizny. Podawane są racje przemawiające za ponownym odczytaniem dzieł Znanieckiego, które umocniłoby podstawy nowej socjologii kulturowej.

From Znaniecki’s point of view, and alluding to present-day conclusions about the so-called reflexivity of modernity, one would have to say that it is a problematic reflexivity, as long as knowledge about the principles of cultural becoming will be minimal. Znaniecki did not deny the justification of sociological studies that start out from naturalist premises. However, he rightly believed that the dependence of cultural order on natural order is not only shrinking, but the reverse is in fact happening-there is an increasing influence of cultural order on natural order, and the rising complexity of cultural phenomena renders the naturalist approach scientifically less productive. The development of sociology as a cultural science led, according to Znaniecki, to displaying the possibility of a world-society as a society founded on culture, while the development of cultural sciences would be an expression of global responsibility for the world-culture society.

In life course studies five principles guide social science researchers: (1) the principle of human development and aging, (2) the principle of human agency, (3) the principle of historical time and space, (4) the principle of timing, and (5) the principle of linked lives. We propose a sixth principle: life course tempo explicitly depends on other life course principles especially the external principles of (2), (3), and (5). Tempo changes may have sociological and psychological consequences. To demonstrate the sixth principle at work, we analyze a sample of the peasant letters both to and from America in Thomas and Znaniecki’s The Polish Peasant in Europe and America, the pioneer life history study of Polish immigrants in early 20th century. Two types of tempo change in transition into first marriage are evident in the letters, waiting/postponement and haste, which resulted from changed historical time and space and reorganized human agency of the immigrants. Thus, this research is inspired by Thomas and Znaniecki’s work on the Polish peasant and Znaniecki’s methodology and in turn uses the Polish peasant letters as data.

The Polish sociologist and philosopher Florian Znaniecki, well-known by his research together with W. I. Thomas on Polish immigrants in the United States, explicated the principles of his “analytic induction” in a later publication The Method of Sociology. This is a method in which research units are examined one by one and in which theoretical insights are adjusted to each observation. This process of continuous re-formulation of the research hypotheses completes when new observations do no longer offer new insights, i.e., when theoretical saturation takes place. In this paper a treatment of the original view of Znaniecki is offered. His starting-points-inductive approach, respect for the facts, dynamical fundamental attitude, special treatment of exceptions, attention for validity and intensional approach-are explained, as well as his formulation of analytic induction in four steps and the principle of structural dependence and the principle of causality. Starting from this original view, the advantages and disadvantages of analytic induction are balanced against each other and this method is examined with the aim of application. Critiques of the approach in the period around 1950, by Robinson, Lindesmith and Cressey and, later in time, by Peter Manning, are discussed and additional research examples from Belgium and the Netherlands serve as illustration of the arguments.

Znaniecki is difficult to classify theoretically, which may be why his ideas and writings have been neglected. He is a central and perhaps the central figure in American sociological theory. This is because he clarified the sense in which the social is symbolic. In addition his pioneering analysis of ethnic prejudice and racism makes him a central figure in the American reform tradition. The key to understanding his theoretical power is in his having fused or merged neo-Kantianism and pragmatism. This paper explains how Znaniecki achieved this highly creative feat and what consequences it led to.

The aim of the article is to look at the thoughts of one of the most prominent Polish sociologists - Florian Znaniecki - and to ask the question to what extent they may be useful for present-day social and migration studies. The hypothesis furthered is that migration literature should go beyond the seminal book on Polish peasants in America by Znaniecki and Thomas and focus more on the Polish sociologist’s early thoughts. The article emphasizes the importance of cultural anthropology and culturalism not only in migration studies but also in a broad range of social studies, including the assessment of post-communist transition.

In his works, Florian Znaniecki makes connections between empirical and theoretical sociology in the way he perceives social issues and problems. The author believed that all fields of science are reflected in human behaviour and that an individual is a “measure of all things”. His approach towards studying and explaining social reality takes into account the experience of an individual or collectivity. The knowledge of Znaniecki’s sociological hypotheses is a crucial factor in the protection of cultural and spiritual values which are displaced by increasing aggression and social callousness.

Florian Znaniecki mimo że był zdecydowanym oponentem socjologii wiedzy, poczynił wiele ustaleń, dzięki którym przyczynił się do umocnienia jej pozycji w refleksji naukowej. W niniejszym tekście wyłowiono wątki, dzięki którym klasyk socjologii wzbogaca namysł nad społecznym uwikłaniem wiedzy. W ten sposób starano się dowieść, że uczony, którego teksty poddano analizie realizował konstruktywny scenariusz badawczy dla socjologii wiedzy wbrew nastawieniu, jakie w stosunku do niej eksponował. Interpretatorzy poglądów Znanieckiego, badając jego dorobek związany z socjologią wiedzy, głównie skupiają swoją uwagę na wiedzy naukowej – uznając, że w tym obszarze poczynił największe odkrycia (co jest poniekąd słuszne), lub też, wychodząc z założenia, że inne rodzaje wiedzy niekoniecznie znalazły się w orbicie jego zainteresowań. Natomiast uwaga autora artykułu skupiona została nie na wiedzy naukowej, ale na wiedzy potocznej, celem pokazania, że także i wokół niej namysł uczonego jest znaczący. Z dorobku, jaki po sobie pozostawił Znaniecki, wydobyto aspekty związane z tym rodzajem wiedzy i w oparciu o nie poczyniono próbę zbudowania w miarę spójnego obrazu jego socjologii wiedzy potocznej. Obraz ten nie miał być wyczerpujący, nie było to zamiarem autora opracowania, ale wiodącym celem tekstu było jedynie wskazanie punktów wyznaczających zasadnicze jego dominanty. Z racji, że sam Znaniecki wysuwał wiele zastrzeżeń pod adresem socjologów zajmujących się wiedzą, prowadzony wywód wzmocniono odniesieniami mocującymi podejmowane przez autora Społecznych ról uczonych wątki w tradycji dyscypliny, by nie było wątpliwości, że mamy do czynienia z rozważaniami mieszczącymi się w granicach socjologii wiedzy. Nadto należy dodać, że wszystkie wspomniane dominanty nie wychodziły poza socjologiczne ramy interpretacyjne – wbrew obawom Znanieckiego, że przy tego typu przedsięwzięciach mamy z tym do czynienia – co uprawomocnia ich socjologiczny charakter.
Despite the fact that Florian Znaniecki was adamantly opposed to the sociology of knowledge, he provided many fundamental principles thanks to which he, on academic reflection, had strengthened its position. The following text provided the ideas thanks to which this founding father of sociology enriches the way in which we perceive how knowledge is connected with society. In this fashion we try and discover, the scholar, whose texts are analysed in the article and who brought a constructive research scenario for sociology using the very same approach with which he opposed it. Those who interpret Znaniecki’s views by studying his achievements within the sociology of knowledge mainly focus on his scientific knowledge considering that it was in these fields that he made the greatest discoveries (which is true nonetheless) albeit concluding that other kinds of knowledge do not necessarily find their place in his interests. The main focus of the author of the article however was not concentrated on scientific knowledge but on common sense knowledge with the aim to prove that even for scholars it is meaningful. Through his achievements as per himself, Znaniecki uncovered aspects connected with this kind of knowledge and on the basis of him failing to create a somewhat mutual picture of his sociology of common-sense knowledge. This image was not supposed to be decisive as it was not the intention of the author of the article, but it was supposed to show the defining key points. Given that Znaniecki himself critiqued many sociologists who were involved in the sociology of knowledge, his criticism was strengthened with references made by the author in The social role of the man of knowledge, to the goals of the tradition within the discipline itself to avoid any doubt as to the fact that we are dealing with blurred boundaries in the sociology of knowledge. Above all, it is worth mentioning that all of the key elements mentioned, do not extend beyond the boundaries of sociological interpretation, in spite of Znaniecki’s thinking that through this manner of approach we are dealing with what gives them their unmistakable sociological character.

The paper undertakes the problem of a social circle notion “wandering”. The main objective is the description of this process and the extraction of its key fields. My main argument is that as many of terms are borrowed from everyday language, its vagueness makes a social circle a notion differently interpreted in structural and interactionist perspectives, which constitute two main ways of its transfer. The analysis presents three transfers: from everyday life to cultural sciences theoretical framework; from low-operationalised notion to an acute one from perspective of different sociological paradigms; from a metaphor of collectivity to an element of network theory.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the problem of the transmission of scientific knowledge in the context of globalization of qualitative paradigm. This has to do not only with language barriers but also with political and scientific contexts, in which research is embedded [Flick 2014]. Here we will try to touch upon some aspects of the process focusing on Russian specifics in receiving and interpreting F. Znaniecki’s ideas and concepts. 1) How did the dominant normative model of society influence the professional attitudes and behavior towards “new” kind of sociological thinking? 2) How did “new” interact with the habitual system of knowledge and methodological orientations of scientific community? 3) How did internal differentiation influence on perception of new ideas? (“man of knowledge” type). The article tries to follow this process in a chronological way in the frames of changing social and professional context of the country. The first part is devoted to late Soviet period; the second – to the first post-Soviet period of democratization and humanization in social knowledge field; and the last – to current situation of developing national specifics based on initial export of methodological concept of “humanistic coefficient” (F. Znaniecki) along with the wide flow of European and American qualitative-interpretive tradition.
Artykuł poświęcony jest problemowi eksportu-importu wiedzy naukowej w kontekście globalizacji paradygmatu jakościowego. Dotyczy on nie tylko barier językowych, ale także kontekstów politycznych i naukowych, w których osadzone są badania [Flick 2014]. W artykule, starając się poruszyć niektóre aspekty tego procesu, koncentrujemy się na specyfice rosyjskiej w przyjmowaniu oraz interpretowaniu idei i koncepcji F. Znanieckiego. 1) W jaki sposób dominujący normatywny model społeczeństwa wpłynął na postawy zawodowe i zachowanie wobec „nowego” sposobu myślenia socjologicznego? 2) Jak kształtowały się wzajemne oddziaływania między „nowym” i „starym” systemem wiedzy i metodologicznymi orientacjami środowiska naukowego? 3) Jak wewnętrzne zróżnicowanie środowiska naukowego (w szczególności typ „uczonego”) wpłynęło na postrzeganie nowych idei? W artykule próbujemy śledzić ten proces w sposób chronologiczny w ramach zmieniającego się kontekstu społecznego i zawodowego kraju. Pierwsza część poświęcona jest późnemu okresowi sowieckiemu; druga – pierwszemu okresowi postradzieckiej demokratyzacji i humanizacji w dziedzinie wiedzy społecznej, a ostatnia - obecnej sytuacji rozwoju specyfiki narodowej opartej na początkowym imporcie metodologicznego pojęcia „współczynnika humanistycznego” (F. Znaniecki) wraz z szerokim przepływem europejskiej i amerykańskiej tradycji jakościowo-interpretacyjnej.

Opis:
An outstanding sociologist and philosopher of culture did not consider himself a pedagogue and was not perceived as one. An analysis of his books written during periods of great global crises: The Fall of Western Civilization (1921) and The Social Role of a University Student (1940), indicates that the fundamental transformation of education, especially university education, is a necessary condition for the formation of a new “aristocracy of the spirit”, new creative elites, capable of leading the masses (people) to the revival and development of Western civilization. American universities are particularly well-suited to this function. Both the content and the language of these books confirms that Florian Znaniecki was a radical humanistic pedagogue.
