Opis:
This paper presents a survey of works, selected from the period of the last twenty years, on deformations in the contact between rough surfaces. All the selected works use FEM. They deal with the modelling of individual contact asperities or the use of experiment to verify contact models. First, research directions connected with the modelling of single asperities, whose shape is usually approximated with that of a hemisphere or a half cylinder, are presented. Section 3 discusses research directions concerning models which include the layer under asperities, and models for small contact surfaces (about 1 mm2). Section 4 reviews directions in contact modelling which takes into account neighbouring asperities and laterally loaded asperities. Section 5 discusses directions in the development of models and experiments used or suitable for verifying models. Finally, conclusions concerning accurate contact deformation modelling are presented.

Opis:
The paper presents experimental and numerical study of the local phenomena during the riveting process. It is commonly accepted that technological factors of the riveting process has a strong influence on the fatigue life of riveted joints. The authors analysed the papers concerned the experimental researches of the riveting force influence on fatigue life. The magnitude of the life increase caused by the riveting force increase suggests the authors that this is not only the result of beneficial stress system but the change of the joint formation mechanism has taken place. This was an inspiration to undertake more detailed researches of the riveting process. The strain progress during the riveting process has been experimentally investigated for four types of aluminium rivets used in airframes. Measurements confirm very high strains near the driven head. For some types of rivets the reversal strain signal has been recorded. Several FE model has been use to investigate the riveting process. The axisymmetric and solid models were used. The agreement of experimental and numerical results in some cases were good, in other cases the numerical models demand further development. In any calculations, the reversal strain effect has not been obtained, This suggest that it is result of the phenomenon which has not been taken into account in numerical modelling. The working hypothesis has been assumed that during the riveting process adhesive joints (called cold welding) were formed and destroyed during the process, what was the reason of the observed reversal strain signal. The authors are going to continue this investigation.

A hybrid ANN-FE solution is presented as a result of two level analysis of soils: a level of a laboratory sample and a level of engineering geotechnical problem. Engineering properties of soils (sands) are represented directly in the form of ANN (this is in contrast with our former paper where ANN approximated constitutive relationships). Initially the ANN is trained with Duncan formula (Duncan and Chang [2]), then it is re-trained (calibrated) with some available experimental data, specific for the soil considered. The obtained approximation of the constitutive parameters is used directly in finite element method at the level of a single element at the scale of the laboratory sample to check the correct representation of the laboratory test. Then, the finite element that was successfully tested at the level of laboratory sample is used at the macro level to solve engineering problems involving the soil for which it was calibrated

The paper presents an FE model of coupled electromagnetic and thermal phenomena in Line Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (LSPMSMs). An algorithm for solving equations of a discrete model using the FEM has been presented. On the basis of this algorithm the author’s personally developed software for the analysis of coupled electromagnetic-thermal phenomena in the LSPMS motors was elaborated. This software was used to analyze the start-up process of motors with identical stator and rotor magnetic circuits and different materials of the starting cage. The start-up process of motors with the squirrel-cage made of aluminum and copper was considered. The influence of temperature on the start-up process has been taken into account. The results of simulation tests were compared with the results of measurements.

Opis:
This article shows the outcomes of a systematic series of finite element (FE) calculations relevant to the shear behavior of a particulate-continuum interface system under different normal boundary conditions. In this respect, shearing of a thin and long granular Cosserat layer in the vicinity of a rigid moving wall with varied surface roughness values is analyzed under constant normal pressure and constant volume conditions. The material behavior is defined with a special elasto-plastic Cosserat model, taking into account micro-rotation, micro-curvature, couple stress, and mean particle size. The interaction between the layer of boundary particles and the surface roughness of the adjoining bottom wall is modeled by the rotation resistance of particles along the wall surface. Herein, the coupled effects of normal confining constraints imposed on the layer and the surface roughness of the bottom wall, are considered on the response of granular material under shearing. The influences of pressure level and initial void ratio are explored as well. Numerical results demonstrate that the dilatancy constraint prescribed to the interface plane in the normal direction, and the wall roughness have visible influences on the interface shear resistance as well as the deformation field formed within the layer. After large shearing, the width of the localized zone along the wall does not necessarily depend on the normal confining constraint and the applied pressure level. However, the localized zone characteristics and the interface shear response are mainly affected by the initial void ratio of the material. In addition to FE analyses, DEM-based simulations are also performed to investigate the micro-mechanical response of granular medium adjacent to a wall under shearing. FE predictions are qualitatively compared with DEM results, and reasonable agreement is observed.

Lądowanie jest najniebezpieczniejszą fazą lotu samolotu. Głównym zadaniem podwozi lotniczych jest pochłanianie energii samolotu podczas lądowania i startu. Dlatego podwozie lotnicze musi posiadać odpowiednią wytrzymałość zapewniającą bezpieczeństwo i założony czas eksploatacji. Większość analiz zmęczeniowych i numerycznego prognozowania czasu eksploatacji podwozi lotniczych ogranicza się do liniowych analiz i badania zjawisk lokalnych występujących wokół uszkodzenia.
Landing is the most dangerous phase of aircraft flight. The primary purpose of the landing gear units is to absorb the impact energy of the aircraft when it lands and takes off. Therefore the landing gear has to sustain appropriate strength to guarantee safety and fatigue life. Majority of the fatigue numerical analysis and prediction of the landing gear's lifetime is limited to linear analysis and local phenomena appearing around a failure. The major advantage of the presented here numerical method is applicability there of to complete landing gear testing with artificially introduced flaws, what is impossible to be performed with other methods, including experimental testing work. The ideal FE model and the model with failure of the complete landing gear were studied in the paper to define the effort of particular components of the complete structure during various touchdown simulations.

The performance of passive safety devices to protect vulnerable road users, or otherwise endangered persons, from severe injuries in cases of impacts and accidents has improved notably in recent decades. The devices’ levels of performance appear to have plateaued but the numbers of severe injuries and deaths caused in such incidents could be decreased further if new solutions are found. At first, the possibilities for improving the impact behavior of passive safety devices may appear to be restricted to device geometry; however, it is in fact also possible to rethink the applied materials and to utilize natural principles in their design. In this study, impact related brain injury mechanisms and injury criteria are investigated using dynamic simulations and Finite Element Head Models, results from which are compared with data collected from real-life accidents. As these tools are advancing considerably in terms of accuracy, information density and complexity, they provide, like expert knowledge from the fields of biomechanics, biomedicine and neuroscience, valuable input for further development.

Investigated alloys had constant copper content equal to 0.9, 0.8 and 0.7 mole fraction, and varied iron concentration up to 0.1 mole fraction. A model predicting the density of ternary solution from knowledge of density of pure component and the excess of molar volume for limiting binaries is proposed.

Opis:
The article presents the results of the investigations into modelling a blast wave for huge charges of l kg TNT equivalent. Modelling of huge charges is a very interesting problem due to a scale effect. During numerical analyses a detonation phenomenon was ignored (for the reason of the analysis time). The paper considers the effects of the influence of a pressure wave coming from a huge TNT charge (modelled with energy) on a 6 mm thick steel plate as well as on a protective panel made of foamed aluminium with composite layer. A panel of foamed aluminium was used for the protection of the described plate. The particular elements of a panel, subjected to an experimental analysis, were jointed with the use of a glueing method. In the numerical model the particular component layers were jointed with contact. The ALE (Arbitrary-Lagrange-Euler) function was used for coupling between the Euler domain and the Lagrange domain. The method requires absolute location compatibility of the nodes from both jointed areas. In the results of the conducted investigations, the permanent deformation of the steel plate was obtained.. Additionally, the possibility of the steel plate deformation evaluation was considered on the basis of accessible literature. Due to a huge charge, the analysis was performed with the use of the finite element method with the eiperimental verification.

The detonation gas spraying method is used to study solidification of the Fe-40Al particles after the D-gun spraying and settled on the water surface. The solidification is divided into two stages. First, the particle solid shell forms during the particle contact with the surrounding air / gas. Usually, the remaining liquid particle core is dispersed into many droplets of different diameter. A single Fe-Al particle is described as a body subjected to a rotation and finally to a centrifugal force leading to segregation of iron and aluminum. The mentioned liquid droplets are treated as some spheres rotated freely / chaotically inside the solid shell of the particle and also are subjected to the centrifugal force. The centrifugal force, and first of all, the impact of the particles onto the water surface promote a tendency for making punctures in the particles shell. The droplets try to desert / abandon the mother-particles through these punctures. Some experimental evidences for this phenomenon are delivered. It is concluded that the intensity of the mentioned phenomenon depends on a given droplet momentum. The droplets solidify rapidly during their settlement onto the water surface at the second stage of the process under consideration. A model for the solidification mechanism is delivered.

The paper put forward a thesis that modelling dissymmetric non-linear multi-bolted connections as a system is possible. Modelling of the systems composed of four subsystems on the assembly state was presented. These subsystems included: a couple of joined elements (a flange and a support), a contact layer between them, and bolts. The physical model of the system was described considering the tightening of bolts according to a specific sequence. In this model: the flange and the support were built using spatial finite elements, the contact layer was formed as the non-linear Winkler model, and the bolts were replaced with simplified models made of flexible beams. The calculation model which can be applied to determine the changes in bolt forces, as well as in the normal contact pressure between the joined elements during the tightening of the system and at its end, was presented. The results of sample calculations for the selected multi-bolted system were shown.

High speeds and the resulting hydrodynamic pressure lead to significant floating of the linear guides. During this movement, the floating behaviour shows phenomena that can be explained by the Reynolds equation. This paper presents a dynamic model of the floating behaviour, which adds tribological approaches to the common Reynolds equation since the floating behaviour does not only depend on the speed, but also on numerous other conditions. This developed simulation method is based on the use of finite difference elements and was implemented using Simulink and Matlab, allowing flexible implementation of further influences such as lubrication cycles and geometry of the sliding surface. After adapting the simulation model and determining the parameters, the calculated floating behaviour corresponds well with the experimental results.

The article presents the case of multiple reflection ofa blast wave from a rigid obstacle. The pressure impulse was generated in the Euler domain according to Taylor-Sedov theory. Additionally, there the results of numerical and analytical investigations on the behaviour of the reflected pressure impulse from the flat stiff obstacle were discussed. The analytical considerations are pursuant to the accessible literature. This case is identical with the explosion under a flat bottom of the tank-type vehicle or BWP. All the considered obstacles which are influence by the pressure impulse are similar to the construction of the vehicles used by Polish Army. As it was mentioned above, the numerical investigations were supported by analytical modelsfrom the scientific literature. In the previous papers, the authors conducted the numerical and experimental investigations on the flat blast wave. Those papers concentrated on the selection of the Euler domain parameters and parameters describing an explosive charge for numerical analyses. Additionally, the parameters of the boundary elements of the Euler domain were selected in order to unable the uncontrolled influence of gases. The innovation presented in the paper is the description of the issue of the numerical problem of multiple pressure impulse reflection from a rigid obstacle. The presented papers aim at increasing the safety of the military vehicles crews during the stabilisation missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
