Opis:
This article is a comparative analysis of Marina Carr’s Ariel (2002) and John Millington Synge’s Riders to the Sea. The main research context comes from common critical treatments of Carr’s oeuvre within the scope of Synge’s influences. The plays discussed in this essay have not been subject to comparative studies before (to the best of the author’s knowledge). The main argument consists in examining the loci of invariance and their transformations with reference to themes, characters’ roles, and their relationships, which will be compared in terms of notions of necessity, generational suffering, reliance on the worldly, and death in the unknown realm, partly treated within existentialism.
Celem artykułu jest dokonanie analizy sztuki Ariel Mariny Carr i Riders to the Sea Johna Millingtona Synge’a. Twórczość Carr często traktowana jest jako kontynuacja dramaturgii Synge’a i utwory tej irlandzkiej dramatopisarki są analizowane w odniesieniu do dramatów Synge’a. Porównanie Ariel i Riders to the Sea wydaje się jednak tematem, który wciąż warto podejmować i wykazywać aspekty niezmienności i ich transformacji. Omówione porównania dotyczą takich motywów, jak: konieczność, pokoleniowe cierpienie, poleganie na doczesności oraz śmierć w nieznanej przestrzeni. Zostaną one częściowo potraktowane w swoim ogólnym odniesieniu do egzystencjalizmu.

Amid the chaos of pandemics or wars, the conflict extends beyond mere human struggles with (their) commonsensically understood “demons”—fears, ambitions, traumas, desires, angsts, and all of other conditions and structures always-already in place even before we become aware of them. Although, beyond doubt, such “side effects” of being-in-the-world or being-with-others generate facts that are effect-producing, whether these facts prove to be morally actionable depends on if and how we engage them. Summing up the mission of the post-Crisis IASA, I build my argument around Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of personal responsibility in the face of the Daemon of Eternal Recurrence, Paul Ricoeur’s phenomenological hermeneutics, and leading Western existentialists to demonstrate that, at least in the Western perspective, the conflict also entails, perhaps more crucially, a fierce battle between the daimōn and the daemonium. Recognizing the eternal recurrence of such catastrophes such as pandemics or wars, the “Greek mindset,” embracing the daimōn, fosters an existential philosophy that emphasizes participation in the realm of immanence, shaping our ethical considerations and propelling actions. In contrast, the “Latin approach,” in constant fear of the daemonium, seems to foster self-perception as constantly plunged in “fear and trembling,”  despairingly “sick unto death,” and prone to attributing malevolent forces to the “evil spirits,” thereby generating configurations that shift the narrative towards self-absolution, and ultimately legitimize refigurations that, diluting personal responsibility, delegate it to transcendence. Embracing Greek thought, we engage in an ongoing quest with facta-ficta, revising language critically (Gr. κρίνω), without expecting finality in our categories, acknowledging that our imperfect language is essential for defining our existence within immanence. Conversely, “Latin thinking,” in which demons are seen as elements of a transcendent realm—unreachable without relinquishing the self, or as part of a faith-based narrative, and in which human is potentially lacking tangible impact—involves the risk of rendering us indifferent to historical lessons, legitimizing a fatalistic nihil novi as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Opis:
The article is dedicated to the book Nowhere. Journey to the Edge of Russia (2019) by Polish philosopher, philologist, and traveler Michal Milczarek. The author of the article pays attention to the narrator’s image, the motif of a road, and the term “nowhere”. The author argues that the writer’s perception is rooted in the child’s phantasmatization (phantasm) and philosophical concepts of existentialism, most importantly Martin Heidegger’s ideas of “the hiddenness of being” and nothingness.
В статье исследуется книга В никуда. Путешествие на край России (2019) польского философа, русиста и путешественника – Михала Мильчарка. Автор статьи обращает внимание на образ рассказчика и создаваемый им мир сквозь призму мотива пути, понимаемого в пространственном и метафорическом значениях. Особенный интерес вызывает содержащееся в заглавии понятие «никуда». Автор доказывает, что восприятие писателем действительности основано на произрастающем из детского опыта фантазировании и на философских понятиях экзистенциального характера, прежде всего на философии Мартина Хайдеггера, в частности «скрытости бытия» и Ничто.
W pracy poddana została analizie książka Donikąd. Podróże na skraj Rosji (2019) Michała Milczarka –filozofa, rusycysty i podróżnika. Autorka zwraca uwagę na obraz narratora, a także świat, jaki kreuje w perspektywie motywu drogi rozumianego w sposób przestrzenny i metaforyczny. Szczególne zainteresowanie budzi pojęcie „donikąd”. Autorka dowodzi, że postrzeganie rzeczywistości przez pisarza wyrasta z dziecięcego doświadczenia fantazjowania (fantazmaty) oraz opiera się na pojęciach filozofii egzystencjalizmu, szczególnie Martina Heideggera, takich jak „skrytość bycia” i „nicość”.

Bolesław Leśmian enjoy unflagging popularity this days. Because of that, I tried to revalue Legends of longing, which appeared in researches as a rader modest, early works than valid mile stone in writing practise of Leśmian. To do so, I’ve read them mostly in hermeneutical way.

Modlitwa zdaje się pełnić wiele funkcji w życiu człowieka. W niniejszej pracy chciałabym przedstawić ją jako werbalny przejaw duchowości, jako narzędzie opracowywania doświadczenia, oblekania go w sens i wreszcie jako immanentny wyraz człowieczeństwa. Chciałabym potraktować tę pracę jako miejsce twórczego spotkania dwóch idei — Janusza Korczaka i Viktora E. Frankla. To nieśmiała próba spojrzenia na jednego oczami drugiego. W pracy przyjęłam za cel poznanie psychicznych reprezentacji Boga podmiotów wypowiadających się w utworze Korczaka, by na tej podstawie móc spróbować określić funkcje, jakie pełni dla nich modlitwa. Na końcu chciałabym przyjrzeć się pojęciu człowieczeństwa i roli, jaką odgrywa w jego konstytuowaniu szeroko pojęta duchowość.
Prayer seems to have various functions in human life. In this paper, it has been presented as a verbal manifestation of spirituality, as a tool for elaborating experience, for giving it meaning and finally as an immanent expression of humanity. I consider this work as a place of creative meeting of two ideas, whose authors are Janusz Korczak and Viktor E. Frankl. It is a timid attempt to look at one author through the eyes of the other. The aim of this article is to explore the mental representations of God as created in the minds of the subjects who speak in Korczak’s work Sam na sam z Bogiem and, on this basis, to attempt to determine the function that prayer plays for them. It also looks at the notion of humanity and the role that spirituality, broadly defined, plays in its constitution.

Artykuł stanowi próbę przeanalizowania religijnej i egzystencjalnej funkcji przyrody w prozie Wojciecha Kuczoka. Wielokrotnie przez pisarza podkreślana przed-człowieczość jaskiń, budzący grozę majestat górskich szczytów, obcowanie z formacjami powstałymi przed milionami lat – wszystko to „wywołuje metafizyczny dreszcz”, prowadzi do nadania naturze wymiaru sakralnego. Przekształceniu i przewartościowaniu ulega pojęcie czasu, żywot ludzki zdaje się być zaledwie mgnieniem w obliczu odwieczności świata przyrody. Dlatego też w pisarstwie Kuczoka prawdziwymi świątyniami okazują się nie wznoszone ludzką ręką kościoły czy katedry, a jaskinie i groty – tylko w owych „cudach odwiecznych” poszukiwać można „śladów Boga”
The article is an attempt to analyze the religious and existential function of nature in the prose of Wojciech Kuczok. The writer repeatedly emphasizes the pre humanity of caves, the terrifying majesty of mountain peaks and age of natural formations that were created millions of years ago – all this “causes a metaphysical thrill” and leads to finding a sacred dimension in natural world. The concept of time is transforming and revaluating, human life seems to be just a glimpse comparing to eternity of the natural world. Therefore, in Kuczok’s writings, the real temples are not churches or cathedrals built by human hands, but caves and grottos – only in these “eternal miracles” human is able to look for “God’s traces”.

W artykule zarysowuję egzystencjalną interpretację etiudy Romana Polańskiego Dwaj ludzie z szafą (1958). Pomimo sporej liczby publikacji traktujących o twórczości Polańskiego nadal brakuje pracy, która wprost i pierwszorzędnie ukazałaby filozoficzno-egzystencjalny potencjał tej wczesnej krótkometrażówki. Wywód został podzielony na pięć części. W pierwszej z nich przyglądam się zagadnieniom samotności i obcości prezentowanym w filmie Polańskiego. W drugim kroku nawiązuję do rozpoznań wybranych filozofów egzystencjalnych (J. Ortega y Gasset, E. Lévinas, J.-P. Sartre, A. Camus). W trzeciej części kreślę specyfikę charakterystycznych dla filmu motywów groteski i absurdu, uwypuklając ich związek z problematyką samotności. Następnie interpretuję film w kontekście autentycznego sposobu egzystowania, odwołując się do spostrzeżeń M. Heideggera i akcentując rozziew między „byciem sobą” a przynależnością do wspólnoty (społeczeństwa). W ostatniej części proponuję psychologiczno-egzystencjalne odczytanie etiudy Polańskiego, zwracając uwagę na psychologiczne uwarunkowania ludzkiej egzystencji.

Pandemia koronawirusa (COVID-19), która w 2020 roku rozlała się na cały świat, w boleśnie skonfrontowała współczesnego człowieka z doświadczeniem śmierci i straty. Zagrożenie własnego życia oraz odejście osób bliskich, pokonanych przez śmiertelną chorobę, dla wielu stało się wydarzeniem traumatycznym, które zmusza do ponowne-go postawienia pytania o sens życia i śmierci. Czy można zmierzyć się z tym pytaniem, przyjmując perspektywę filozoficznego egzystencjalizmu? To właśnie w ramach tego nurtu zrodziły się przecież dwa główne podejścia — ateistyczne i chrześcijańskie — pro-ponujące pewien sposób rozumienia kondycji człowieka dotkniętego dramatem śmierci. Niniejszy artykuł, opierając się na refleksji wybranych przedstawicieli obu kierunków i metodzie jej systematycznej analizy, stanowi próbę opisu egzystencjalnej sytuacji człowieka czasów pandemii oraz odpowiedzi na pytanie, co  doświadczenie śmierci może wnieść do jego sposobu rozumienia życia. W tym kontekście artykuł ukazuje wartość chrześcijańskiej koncepcji samoudzielenia się Boga w Chrystusie.
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which spread throughout the world in 2020, has painfully confronted modern human with the experience of death and loss. The threat to one’s own life and the passing of relatives defeated by a terminal illness have become a traumatic fact for many people, forcing them to ask again the question about the meaning of life and death. Can this question be addressed today from the perspective of existentialism? It was within this philosophical trend that two main approaches were born — atheistic and Christian — proposing a certain way of understanding the condition of a person affected by the drama of death. This article, based on the reflections of selected representatives of both directions and on the method of their systematic analysis, is an attempt to describe the existential situation of man during a pandemic and to answer the question of what the experience of death may bring to his understanding of life. In this context, the article shows the value of the Christian concept of God’s self-giving in Christ.

Although there is a relatively long tradition of research into the mechanisms underlying conflicts (both internal and interpersonal ones), the existential perspective of conflict has not as yet been the subject of extensive psychological studies. From the standpoint of existential psychology, conflict is primarily an expression of an individual’s confrontation with objective existential facts: freedom and the responsibility for oneself that freedom entails, the finitude of human life, existential loneliness and fate in its broadest sense. Although conflict, so defined, is essentially an immanent feature of human existence, it becomes a problem when a strong sense of helplessness and anxiety starts to accompany it, as a person loses their purpose in life and fails to realize their personal values. This research aimed to answer the question of whether there is a relationship between an individual’s behavior in response to (internal and interpersonal) conflict and his/her sense of meaning in life and preferred values. The study covered a group of 153 students aged from 19 to 26 years. Purpose-of-life was measured using the test developed by Crumbaugh and Maholick (1964). The Schwartz Portrait Values questionnaire was used to assess the respondents’ preferences for fundamental values. The behavior of the subjects in response to conflict was examined using linguistic (frequency) analysis of the verbs used in their open-ended answers.

Stanislaw Lem is one of the most famous figures of the Polish science fiction in post-world war two Europe. Solaris. His most famous novel, was published in 1961, and was adapted twice for the big screen, first in 1971 by Andrej Tarkovski, and in 2002 by Steven Soderbergh. The plot revolves around the psychologist Kris Kelvin, who is sent on the planet Solaris to try to find out if it is possible to communicate with the alien ocean that covers almost all of its surface. Confronted with a strange phenomenon and colleagues turned paranoid, Kelvin tries at first to understand what is going on at the space station. The unexplained arrival of the döppleganger of his ex-partner, Harey, will little by little make him accept the absurdity of his task and possibly of life itself. As Lem himself refused any final interpretation of his novel, there has of course been a flourish of them. One can however choose this exegetic impossibility as a major theme in the novel, and reflect on the implications of the situation Kelvin faces, caught between a desire to understand the nature of Solaris’s ocean and the sheer failure of doing so. In this essay, we will try to suggest that, by showing the limits of language as the means to express a satisfying epistemic frame, Lem’s parabol could be seen as an attempt to show the reader the existential limits of our anthropocentrism and scientific hubris.

This paper presents an analysis of the various aspects of freedom pictured by John Fowles in his novels The Collector and The Magus. The analysis consists of elements related to freedom in terms of social conventions, morality, sexuality, and free will. The methodology of the work is based on theories of postmodernism with an emphasis on existentialism and magical realism. The issue of freedom is a very extensive and up-to-date concept in the contemporary world, full of situations related to the violation of human rights, which is why this work is an interesting dialogue relating to this topic, so important for the humanity.
Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia analizę różnych aspektów wolności przedstawionych w powieściach Johna Fowlesa „Kolekcjoner” i „Mag”. Przedmiotem analizy są takie elementy, jak wolność w odniesieniu do konwencji społecznych, moralności, seksualności i wolnej woli. Praca wprowadza aspekty postmodernizmu z uwzględnieniem egzystencjalizmu i realizmu magicznego. The article presents a critical approach to „Filozofia” Jaspersa [Jaspers’ „Philos- ophy”] by Mirosław Żelazny (WN UMK, Toruń 2019). It discusses the main theses presented in the dissertation and invites to reflection on the existential philosophy of Karl Jaspers. The paper exposes the most important themes of Jaspersian think- ing — the dialectical method of philosophizing, understanding the worldview, the phenomenon of existential communication and the concept of borderline situations.

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of corporeality in the structure of postmodern philosophical thought and the conceptual foundations of feminist critique (an essay by L. Irigaray). Based on several samples of the late XX century women’s writing, the article traces the problems of women authors searching and finding the voice of their body, and emphasizes the importance of accepting and comprehending the bodily forms of their nature. The main motives and authorial intentions of I. Ensler’s drama “The Vagina Monologues” are considered, the writer’s view on women’s language and speech expression of their own corporeality and sexuality is argued. Methods. The research is based on general scientific methods of synthesis, analysis, selection and systematization of material. Elements of psychoanalytic, anthropological, hermeneutic approaches are partially applied. The tools of deconstructivism and feminist critique are used. We use information from linguistics, anthropology, cultural and gender studies for interdisciplinary consideration of corporeality in women’s writing. The descriptive method allows to present the subject of corporeality in separate works of fiction. Results. It was found that the analyzed phenomena of the description of the female body in women’s writing create a projection of corporeality as a dramatized existence with its inherent characteristics: balancing between speech and silence, permissiveness and condemnation, courage and shame; search for exact language means; selection of rhetoric and stylistics peculiar to this theme; attempts to establish a verbal connection between the voice and the body, fear of losing this connection. Ukrainian women’s writing of the late XX century is also mentioned in this context, particularly when regarding the expression of the concept of “body” in thematic and ideological terms. Conclusions. Analyzing some examples of women’s writing (scholarly – an essay by L. Irigaray, and artistic – a drama by I. Ensler), we summarize that their problem-thematic direction is determined by issues of the body capable of self-narration and self-representation in public space. Some elements of postmodern symbolism of body and corporeality are decoded, o-corporeal metaphors of women’s writing related to women’s freedom of choice are explained. Women’s writing is defined as a symbolic way of telling one’s own experiences of one’s own body.
У статті представлений аналіз тілесності у структурі постмодерної філософської думки та концептуальних засад феміністичної критики (праці Л. Ірігарай). На матеріалі окремих зразків жіночого письма кінця ХХ ст. простежено проблеми пошуку і знайдення авторками голосу свого тіла, важливість прийняття й осмислення тілесних форм своєї природи. Розглянуто основні мотиви й авторські інтенції драми І. Енслер «Монологи вагіни», аргументовано погляд письменниці на мовне й мовленнєве вираження жінками власної тілесності й сексуальності. Методи. Дослідження базоване на загальнонаукових методах синтезу, аналізу, добору та систематизації матеріалу. Частково застосовано елементи психоаналітичного, антропологічного, герменевтичного підходів. Використано інструментарій деконструктивізму та феміністичної критики. Послуговуємося даними лінгвістики, антропології, культурних та гендерних студій для інтердисциплінарного розгляду питань тілесності у жіночому письмі. Описовий метод дозволяє представити тематику тілесності в окремих творах художньої літератури. Результати. З’ясовано, що аналізовані явища дескрипції жіночого тіла у жіночому письмі творять проект тілесності як драматизованої екзистенції з властивими їй характеристиками: балансування між промовлянням й мовчанням, вседозволеністю й осудом, сміливістю й соромом; пошук точних мовних засобів; добір властивої цій темі риторики й стилістики; намагання встановити вербальний зв’язок між голосом й тілом, страх втрати цього зв’язку. Українське жіноче письмо кін. ХХ ст. теж згадано в цьому контексті, зокрема, щодо вираження концепту «тіло» в тематично-ідейному ключі. Висновки. Проаналізувавши окремі зразки жіночого письма (есеїстичного – праці Л. Ірігарай та художнього – драма І. Енслер), узагальнюємо, що їхнє проблемно-тематичне спрямування визначається питаннями тіла, здатного до себе-розповідання й саморепрезентування в публічному просторі. Декодовано окремі елементи постмодерної символіки тіла і тілесності, пояснено о-тілеснені метафори жіночого письма, пов’язані з жіночою свободою вибору. Жіноче письмо визначено як символічний спосіб себе-розповідання про досвіди власного тіла.

In The ethics of ambiguity, Simone de Beauvoir provides a powerful analysis of how we make our lives meaningful by disclosing the world. There are strong similarities between this account and theories of narrative identity: both describe how we select, interpret, and assess value for the events in our lives. Reading Beauvoir’s existentialist work through the lens of narrative identity allows us to better appreciate the social dimension of disclosure, however, since social narratives play a vital role in constructing our identity. For example, we find that our identities are partly assembled from life-scripts provided from our culture, which may define social groups in negative and rigid terms. This approach, then, allows us to understand the subtleties of racism and similar forms of oppression. Our ability to disclose a meaningful life is compromised by the imposition of restrictive and harmful narratives or by the refusal of others to recognize our chosen identities. The approach also offers ways to remedy these forms of oppression. In particular, it suggests the need to listen to the narratives of oppressed groups and think critically about how our own narratives impose or deny meanings.
