Opis:
The philosophy of the death of God, pronounced by Friedrich Nietzsche in 1882, resulted in many negative consequences experienced in contemporary culture. The Nietzschean critique of the classical hierarchy of values inspired radical declaration about the death of metaphysics and the end of human history. In its form developed in deconstructive postmodernism, this philosophy proclaims the dissolution of the human subject. Consistently, it rejects the very concept of human person and tries to reduce human existence to the level of psychoanalytic, social and/or cultural phenomena. In this conceptual framework, either the classical version of humanism must be questioned or its nihilistic reinterpretation, in terms of a humanism of despair, should be adopted.

W artykule podano wyczerpującą charakterystykę estetycznego i filozoficzno-światopoglądowego oblicza literatury ukraińskiej lat 60. XX w., pokolenia tzw.

The main followers of phenomenological-existential trend in the field of philosophy of God in Poland are: Marian Jaworski, Józef Tischner and Karol Tarnowski. Jaworski united thomistic arguments for existence of God with augustian philosophy of subject and personal-axiological experience. Tischner completely rejected thomism and his philosophy of God based on anthropology and personal values. Tarnowski also was critical toward ontological-cosmological arguments for existence of God. He is fallower of G. Marcel and therefore accepted religious faith as basis of theism.

Opis:
In the mid Sixties New Figuration appeared in Poland. Researchers interested in this chapter of polish art consider the reception of Francis Bacon's paintings as one of the sources of this kind of art. The subject of this article is mainly the painters, whose works show this reception, but also the sculptors. It concentrates on the Sixties and Seventies in Polish painting. At that time in the Polish art we can see a group of artists connected with existentialism. One of the most interesting phenomena is the painting of Teresa Pągowska (1926-2007), this artist, whom was older than others who were also working in the area of New Figuration, already had concrete artistic experience. In spite of similarities between many works of Francis Bacon and Teresa Pągowska, mainly in the composition and shot of the figure (deformed, not complete, dismembered), the works of Pągowska should be considered in their own right particular to her own style. Pągowska processed Bacon's art in an original way. Her distinction from other painters belonging to New Figuration comes from her experience, on the one hand Colorism (polish Postimpresionism), on the other hand – Abstraction, which led her to understand figures as a plastic sign, moving, full of color. In the second half of the Sixties we can find the inspiration of Francis Bacon's art in the paintings of Janusz Przybylski (1937-1998). Bacon in his compositions used spatial frame which was interpreted in different ways. It had been seen as a usual glass cage, confined the human being. The artist admitted that he uses this endeavour to expose a man in a better way. This solution became a kind of an artistic hook and it was taken by other artists. It spread so much that it became a kind of a manner. To avoid narration Bacon sometimes used a form of triptych. This was typically used by him and was imitated almost as often as placing people in a spatial frame. Both hooks were used by Przybylski, whose art in a different way fits in as a style of existentialism. The deformed human beings in the cages should show alienation and the drama of man. This aspect of polish artists' paintings more than others highlights connections with the English master's art. The polish painter of the Sixties and Seventies was not an artist who could be described as self-sufficient from what we can see by viewing their paintings and reading art critics. The reception of Bacon's painting we can also find in the art of a group from Cracow called “Wprost”, especially in the one of their member's art – Zbylut Grzywacz (1939-2004). Grzywacz confirmed that his interest in Bacon's art can be seen in his paintings created in the Seventies. The nature of these adaptations lay mainly in getting compositional solutions typical to Bacon and the original look of the deformed human being. However, the artist also underlined that used by him endeavours of body's deformation were connected with politics so they had a different context than in the work of Bacon. This highlights the large gap between English artists who's art concentrated on universal cases and the public art of the polish artist. Grzywacz painted with speed, carelessly, he just wanted to give us a short message, he didn't care about particular artistic problems. He wasn't a member of this group interested in Francis Bacon. Next to him we should remember Jacek Waltoś (born 1938). In his paintings we won't find such a direct connection with Bacon's art like as is the case with Grzywacz. Waltoś was fascinated by Bacon but he took from him just the ideas concerning problems of a painting's composition. This artist, contrary to other members of “Wprost” was mostly interested in the representation of emotional states, of what is inside the human being. Waltoś, a creator of existential art, feeling incomplete, the loneliness of human being, found in the Irish artist a kind of brother. There was also Wiesław Szamborski (born 1941) who was among the painters inspired by Bacon. In the first years after he finished his studies he exhibited often with Marek Sapetto (born 1939; until 1974). The art of both artists joins with Bacon's art color standardisation of painted surfaces and putting on them strongly deformed human beings. More painters were regarded as inspired by Bacon but there is not a description of their art in this article which is just an introductory reconnaissance of this problem. The image of a human being which was proposed by Francis Bacon turned out to be very interesting also for sculptors centred on existential reflection. The dramatically deformed face occurred to be the best medium to express people's anxieties, their feelings of emptiness and loneliness (Jacek Waltoś, Jan Kucz – born 1936, Wiktor Gajda – 1938, Adam Myjak – born 1947). The Eighties did not have such rich artistic material as can confirm a permanent fascination of Bacon's painting in Poland. It seems that in a world dominated by New Expressionism there is no place for it. Enough to say that the most interesting artist in dialogue with the English painter seems to be Grzegorz Bednarski (born 1954), consequently belonging to Figuration, connected with Cracow's environment. After his debut he moved to the area of existentialism. Nowadays Bacon's work is regarded as a classic. Artists quote his paintings in a conscious way (for example Marek Przybył, born 1961). Bacon happened to be a very popular artist in Poland in the Sixties and Seventies which corresponds with general trends in European art. At this time came after return to show a human being. It appeared New Figuration, antidote on the Abstraction, Conceptual Art and metavisual experiments of the Sixties. Bacon became the father to these new phenomena in art because he brought about a renewed artistic imagination and created a new image of the human being. Moreover, Bacon was regarded as a main representative of art identified with existential philosophy. This painting in a very good way expressed spirits of the time. It reflected Zeitgeist, that climate which was then best shown in the philosophy of existentialism. Bacon's reception in Poland had also local color. English artist's art was assimilated by polish painters, who were interested in politics, what was unfamiliar with Bacon who concentrated on universal problems. It seems that polish artists like thematic art, taking problems concerning a human being and his immediate environment, what constitutes the heritage of our history.

This paper brings close the human hermeneutic horizons of autonomous man and theonomous man, i.e. those approaches that result from the experience of transcendence or its lack. In its conception of man, Christianity takes Incarnation as its starting point. In the light of Incarnation, transcendence and immanence are mixed in the life and Person of Jesus Christ. Christianity is not an ideology, but it stresses the historical and personal experience of God-Man whose Person and life compose the foundation on which to understand the whole of reality. It is on this view that our perception of ethics depends. Ethics is different if this point is disregarded. However, ethics should always have primacy over politics. In order to cherish an overall human scope, ethics should be based on integral anthropology that respects all dimensions of the person: individual, social, spiritual, religious, the internal and external aspects. Contemporary personalism emphasises all the essential traits of the person, among which we find transcendence, freedom, relational and dialogical character. The person is fulfilled in relations because it is a relationship with regard to his or her essence. Christian ethics that is built on the foundation of personalistic anthropology recognises the dimension of human transcendence, especially in relation to persons and values. It does not reject, however, a different point of view, but at the same time disagrees to any discrimination of its position in the world of human values. A patient and concrete dialogue, such that aims at the good of every human being is the foundation of scientific ecumenism. This integral model of reality open to the dignity of each person and his social dimension is given by personalism. Only in the perspective of the person can we build a level of understanding and this should be a universal principle.

The text develops selected aspects of the philosophical-existential issues evoked by the quotation from K. Gąsiorowski's poetry contained in the title of the article. First of all tautology of the poetic quasi-definition of the world presented in the fragment is a problem. Secondly, the impression of the triumph of philosophical context (especially of E. Husserl and M. Heidegger) of the meaning of the word “world” evoked in the analyzed phrase over its semantic content in the aesthetic dimension (over the reduction of the poetic function, bordering on banality) is a contentious issue. In the discussion of the latter of these problems – limited because of the requirement concerning the brevity of the article – the category of “the third man” as a social construct formulated by Gąsiorowski – will prove helpful.

Opis:
Existentialism is an anti-system philosophy, since it concentrates on the subjectively experienced, individual existence of a subject. Existentialists focus on such aspects of a human existence as freedom, loneliness, finiteness and a desire for authenticity. In the 20th century existentialism it is possible to distinguish two trends: theistic and atheistic. For existentialists of both trends, a man is a dynamic and creative subject, subjectively experiencing the existence in the world. This existence is completely different from the existence of things and animals. For the representatives of the theistic trend, he is a dualist individual who stands out mainly due to his spirituality, ability to transcend towards the infinity, towards God. To the representatives of the atheist faction, on the other hand, he appears to be an immanent, finite in time and closed in the physical mortal life subject. The existentialists of both trends emphasise - though understanding it in various ways - the need for an authentic life and the axiological dimension of the human existence in the world, however, differently comprehending the origins and the way ethical values exist. Theistic and atheistic existentialism is an objection against the cultural mechanisms which degrade and depersonalize a man, it is a defence of human freedom and subjectivity against the unification and reification which threaten the man in the consumer civilization.

The works of Simone de Beauvoir – an intellectual writer, an icon of feminism, and a representative of existentialism – explore the issues of gender identity and femininity. This article reflects on the writings of the author, which reveal the otherness of a woman who asserts her right to be present in culture. Her works also stress independence and autonomy. Beauvoir’s largely autobiographical texts express a search for identity by a woman with strong social and political commitments, who fought against injustice, intolerance, and wars, defending the rights of women and the human dignity. Through her critique of the bourgeoisie Beauvoir manifested her need for freedom, identified with her occupation. Aware of the limitations attributed to her sex, Beauvoir draws the portrait of a courageous woman with unrestricted identity. These works remain valid even outside the academic discourse owing to their constant emphasis on creation, independence, and individualism as well as revealing exposures. Self-creation provides an interesting perspective on today’s humanities and inspires women’s writing in the 21st century.

This paper articulates an existential conception of culture using as an analogy the existential conception of science as formulated by Heidegger. As with the existential conception of science, the existential conception of culture corresponds to a mode of existence of Dasein. This distinguishes the existential conception of culture from other prevalent notions of culture that view culture as present-at-hand or ready-to-hand. However culture is not simply a mode of Dasein’s existence. It is a mode of existence that discloses that very mode of existence. More precisely, in culture Dasein discloses its very being by concretely working it out. Moreover, it is argued that the task of culture is to exist in such a way that one realizes values in an uncommon manner.

Opis:
This paper attempts to study and to describe the experience of conversion that is an existential change, whose aim is to initiate a relation with God. Although the category of conversion is biblical and theological, it is also an anthropological notion. Hence, research on this phenomenon by means of the phenomenological method may result in the extension of the knowledge of humanity. The article consists of two fundamental parts. In the first one three examples of conversion, as an empiric basis for further research, are presented: St Augustine of Hippo’s, Cardinal John Henry Newman’s and Edith Stein’s. An investigation of their ways enables us to enter into the horizon of the experience of conversion and to understand its basic intuition. In this approach the conversion is comprehended as a radical turn on the road of searching for the truth. A converting person gains the consciousness of being on the supreme way to the truth. In the further part of the article, the investigations bring a more universal description of this phenomenon. Conversion is certainly not only the single event, e.g. the turning point. It is rather a process which has its ‘before’ and ‘after’. On the way leading to conversion one may find such phenomena as: the integrated life of the person, an experience of emptiness and dissatisfaction, the courage to break present horizons and a readiness to accept the unexpected. In turn, ‘after’ the conversion one may notice the following phenomena: an experience of one’s own limits, the consciousness of the Absolute and an experience of freedom. The paper culminates in the discussion about the comprehension of conversion in terms of the process of philosophy or the ontology of becoming. Such concepts as Hegelian dialectic, Aristotle’s theory of act and potency or Kierkegaard’s leap of faith are rejected. The way of converting man has its explanation in the categories of the religious development according to J. H. Newman.

Wishing to defeat or silence a fear of death and not being able to find support from religion, neighbours, culture and ideas, turns Emil Cioran towards the philosophy of the East. Buddhism, which is not an institutionalized religion, refers to reflection and a cognitive effort, and aims at the purification of the consciousness from illusions of the external world. Those illusions create a number of attachments and desires and in this way, they arouse in a man constant anxiety and suffering at the thought of disappointment, failure and loss. In striving for purification from illusions, desires and sufferings, Cioran reaches for Buddhist contemplation techniques over what is left from a man after death, and for the Buddhist notion of emptiness, which helps in removing the content from the world, and thanks to all of this, the fear of death disappears, the impression of undisturbed completeness and happiness is attained, moreover, the state of blissful indifference is achieved. Ultimately, the author of Drawn and Quartered cannot consent to such an existential limbo and imputes to Buddhism, that by renouncing desires, attachments and sufferings, in fact, it renounces life due to pointless indifference, it creates only an illusion of liberation, in the essence, it is strange for a man from the West and therefore, it quickly arouses a desire for a re-involvement in the agitated course of illusions, objects, issues, passions and a common pursuits.
