Opis:
The aim of this study was to sum up the experiences gained during twelve-year research on effects of using educational balls called ‘edubal’ in PE classes in grades 1 to 3 of the primary school (i.e. children aged 7 to 10). The research was carried out in Poland an in Germany. The authors focused their attention on objectives and tasks of contemporary education of children aged 7 to 10 – first of all supporting and stimulating comprehensive development of children, especially with regard to improving coordinative motor abilities which determine, inter alia, reading and writing skills. Employment of ‘edubal’ education balls in early school education (grades 1 to 3 of the primary school) activates cognitive, emotional and physical spheres of a child and hence contributes to the integration of the subject content. The children while participating in PE classes with the use of education balls learn about letters, spelling rules, colours, mathematical signs and punctuation marks as well as numerous rules which are useful in linguistic and mathematical education and they shape their coordination abilities and improve physical skills. Moreover, they also develop their coordination abilities. ‘Edubal’ education balls have a much wider scope of application than it was the case twelve years ago. They are also used in occupational therapy of disabled persons and in work with dyslectic children who attend therapeutic schools.

Introduction This study evaluated the effect of a 12-month physical exercise intervention accompanied by a 12-month followup evaluating stress symptoms (SS), mental resources (MR) and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in healthy, working adults. We hypothesized that the stress symptoms would decrease and mental resources would increase during the intervention and that these results are associated with changes in CRF. Material and methods The study group included healthy adults (N = 371). Three hundred thirty eight participants (212 women, 126 men) were allocated in the exercise group and 33 in the control group (17 women and 16 men). For the analysis, the exercise group was divided into subgroups according to the baseline SS and MR. Stress symptoms and MR were measured using the Occupational Stress Questionnaire. Results During the 12-month exercise intervention, SS decreased by 16% (p < 0.0001), MR increased by 8% (p < 0.0001) and CRF increased by 7% (p < 0.0001) in the exercise group, while no changes occurred in the control group (ANCOVA, p < 0.01). In the exercise group, the results (SS, MR, and CRF) remained improved during the follow-up. There was a positive correlation between the change in SS and the change in CRF (r = 0.19, p < 0.01). In the subgroup having the highest SS at baseline, SS during the intervention decreased most (26%) (ANCOVA, p < 0.0001). Conclusions One year physical exercise intervention improved mental well-being among working adults and this was associated with an improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness. The positive changes remained after the 12-month follow-up.

Is the Stoic sage a possible or desirable ideal for contemporary men and women, as we enter into difficult times? Is he, as Seneca presents him, the very best person for a crisis? In order to examine these questions, Part 1 begins from what Irene Liu calls the “standard” modern conceptions of the sage as either a kind of epistemically perfect, omniscient agent, or else someone in possession of a specific arsenal of theoretical knowledge, especially concerning the physical world. We contest this contentious conception of the sage for being inconsistent with the Stoic conceptions of wisdom, the technai and knowledge which can be gleaned from the doxographic sources. In Part 2, we suggest that the wisdom of the Stoic sage reflects the Stoics’ “dispositional” conception of knowledge, their substantive conception of reason (Logos), and their sense of philosophy as above all an “exercise” or askêsis of a craft or technê for living. It is embodied in an ongoing exercise of examining one’s impressions for consistency with what one already knows, looking back to the natural prolêpseis with which all people are equipped. In Part 3, we show how only this account of the wisdom of the sage, at the epistemic level, enables us to understand how, in the non-doxographic texts led by Seneca’s De Constantia Sapientiae, the sage is celebrated above all for his ethical characteristics, and his ability to bear up in a crisis. Concluding reflections return to our framing concern, as to whether philosophy as a way of life, and the ancient ideal of the sage, can speak to us today not only as scholars, but as individuals called upon to live in difficult times. We suggest that they can and should remain sources of orientation, contestation, and inspiration.

The aim of this study was to design a prescriptive exercise program for people of various age and fitness basing on the popular in Japan Radio Physical Fitness Exercise, a program based on an experimental approach. The evaluation indices used in the experiment were heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption, and electrical activity of the rectus femoris, latissimus dorsi, and trapezius muscles, which measured during various motion elements of the program performed at various rate. The results of this study enable to calculate equations for predicting HR during exercise from relative metabolic rate (RMR). The data on HR, RMR, and myoelectric potential presented in this study may be a basis for designing individual exercise programs for elderly people.

Background: Conditioning activities such as resistance training can cause excitation of central nervous system resulting in Post-activation Potentiation phenomenon. Plyometric exercise also has an important role to develop Post-activation Potentiation following a resistance stimulus. So the purpose the study was to investigate the immediate effects of weighted plyometric exercise on sprint, agility and jump performance. Materials and methods: Twenty male university football players (age=21.3±1.5 years, body mass=63.3±9.5 kg, height=169.8±6.4 m) participated in this Single group pre-test post-test study. Agility Time (AT), Sprint Time (ST) and Counter-Movement Jump (CMJ) height were measured prior to and 1st and 5th minutes following plyometric exercise. Results: A repeated measures ANOVA employed at baseline (T0), 1 minute (T1), and 5 minutes (T5) post intervention showed significant effect for all the three outcome measures (p<0.001). Post-hoc Bonferroni pairwise comparison showed a significant decrease in both AT and ST from baseline to assessments at both T1 (p<0.001) and T5 (p<0.001), whereas there was a significant increase in the CMJ height. However, no statistical difference was found between T1 and T5 (p=0.058) in ST, but AT was significantly lower at T5 than at T1 (p=0.008), and CMJ height showed significant increase from T1 to T5 (p=0.001). Conclusion: Our results suggest that weighted plyometric exercises have an acute response on sprint, agility and counter movement jump (CMJ Height) following Post-Activation Potentiation (PAP) effect developed after plyometric exercises.

The aim of the study was to reveal age differences in motives and barriers of women attending fitness centers. 157 women aged 17-83 (M=43.86±15.40) participated in the study. All of them were members of fitness centers in the Silesia Metropolis in Poland. The most common reported motives for exercising were health and revitalization. Four motives changed when comparisons were made between age groups: affiliations, competition, health pressure and avoiding diseases. All these motives were stronger in older women. The main barriers to exercising were time constraints and physical limitations. The severity of time barrier significantly decreased with age and in older women it fell into the second place in the hierarchy, giving priority to physical barriers.

Materiał i metody. Do badań wykorzystano Międzynarodowy Kwestionariusz Aktywności fizycznej IPAQ w wersji skróconej. W badaniach uczestniczyło 80 osób. Sześć osób zostało wykluczonych z badań. Wyniki opracowano na bazie średniej arytmetycznej. Wykonano analizę procentową. Zbadano częstość podejmowania intensywnych i umiarkowanych wysiłków fizycznych, chodzenia, czas spędzany w pozycji siedzącej oraz wartość tygodniowej aktywności fizycznej. Na podstawie uzyskanych danych określono poziom aktywności fizycznej oraz: liczbę osób podejmujących intensywny wysiłek fizyczny, częstość podejmowania intensywnego wysiłku fizycznego, średnią liczbę dni przeznaczaną na intensywny wysiłek fizyczny, średni czas poświęcany w ciągu dnia na intensywny wysiłek fizyczny, liczbę osób niepodejmujących intensywnych wysiłków fizycznych, liczbę osób podejmujących umiarkowany wysiłek fizyczny, częstość podejmowania umiarkowanego wysiłku fizycznego, średnią liczbę dni przeznaczaną na umiarkowany wysiłek fizyczny, średni czas poświęcany w ciągu dnia na umiarkowany wysiłek fizyczny (w minutach), liczbę dni poświęconych na chodzenie – spacerowanie w ciągu ostatniego tygodnia, średni czas przeznaczony na chodzenie (ile minut dziennie trwa chód, spacerowanie), średni czas spędzony siedząc (w minutach). Wyniki.
Background. Physical activity plays an important role in human life. For ages we have been aware of the favorable effect of physical exercise on the human body. There are multiple benefits of physical activity. Each of us takes exercise, but not every exercise level is sufficient to have a favorable effect on the human body. In order to obtain such an effect, physical exercise should be regularly performed with an adequate intensity. The aim of the experiment was to compare and grade physical activity in the Polish population living at least 5 years in Great Britain and the Polish population living in Poland. The following hypothesis was constructed: The Poles living abroad differently perceive themselves and their involvement in physical activity. They devote more time to exercising and they know active forms of leisure activities. Given that fact, it was expected that the Poles living abroad would differently perceive themselves and their involvement in physical activity. Materials and methods. A short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used for the research. The total of 80 persons participated in the survey. Six participants were excluded from the study. The results were calculated using an arithmetic mean. Percentile analysis was conducted. The frequency of vigorous and moderate physical exercise including walking and the amount of time spent in a seated position were measured, and the values corresponding to weekly involvement in physical activity were calculated. Based on the obtained values the following parameters were calculated: the level of physical activity, number of people undertaking intensive physical exercise, the frequency of vigorous exercise performance, the average number of days spent on intensive physical exercise performance, the average time (during the day) spent on for intensive exercise performance, the number of people who did not perform vigorous physical exercise, the number of people performing moderate physical exercise, the frequency of moderate exercise performance, the mean number of days spent on moderate exercise performance, the mean time dedicated to moderate exercise (minutes), the number of days subjects spent walking - going for walks during the last weekend, the average time spent walking (in minutes) and mean time spent in a sitting position (minutes). Results. The obtained values did not reveal any statistically significant differences. Conclusions. The results indicate that the mentality of Poles does not change with their place of abode. Habits and leisure time activities do not change due to moving to another place.

The need to prevent the development of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic makes it necessary to maintain physical distance to comply with various types of sanitary standards. However, when restrictions imposed by public authorities lead to limiting the exercise of human rights and freedoms, they must be laid down in normative acts of appropriate form and content. Meanwhile, many of the restrictions introduced by the Polish authorities with a view to combatting the pandemic, which restricted the exercise of freedom of religion, did not meet the standards defined by the Polish Constitution.

Objectives: Childhood and adolescence are stages in which changes occur both mentally and at a body level and in which habits are acquired that persist for many years in the child's life. The objective of the present study was to analyze body composition and physical fitness based on the practice of physical activity, diet and body image of soccer players at school age. Methods: The sample consisted of 41 players of Alcantarilla football with an average age of 13.12 ± 2.41 years. The following variables of body composition were evaluated: waist / hip ratio (WHR), body mass index (BMI), fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), total body water (TBW), basal metabolic rate (BMR), fat mass index (FMI), fat-free mass index (FFMI). The physical fitness variables evaluated were: staircase test, resting heart rate (HR), diastolic blood pressure (SBP) and systolic blood pressure (DBP), Course Navette (CN; stage, distance, speed), VO2max, HRmax, HR 1.5, 3 and 5 min post-CN, maximum oxygen saturation (SO2max), SO2 3 and 5 min post-CN. The diet was evaluated using the KIDMED Mediterranean diet adherence questionnaire. Physical activity was assessed using the PACE questionnaire. The body image was analyzed using the Stunkard silhouettes. Findings: The results showed that both the basal metabolic rate (p = 0.002) and the resting systolic blood pressure (p = 0.000) were significantly higher in active subjects than in inactive subjects. Regarding diet, BMI was significantly lower in subjects with a poor diet (p = 0.06) in comparison to subjects with an optimal diet. Finally, according to the body image, the Course Navette result was significantly higher in those who wanted to be larger than in those who were satisfied or wished to lose weight. Conclusions: Therefore, it is recommended to carry out intervention programs to improve the level of physical activity, diet and body image, as this will have a positive effect on body composition and physical fitness.

High quality teaching materials, which will effectively integrate four major language learning skills, is critical in language learning. Material designers are practitioners who are well aware of the (non)effectiveness of various teaching methods and strategies. This paper aimed to study the types of exercises in young leaners’ language classes and skills focused on. The content analysis was done by examining the most frequently used student books from grade 1 to 4. The analysis has proven that the receptive skills are generally more focused on but the productive ones also receive attention even at the lowest grades. The usual stimulus for in-class tasks is a visual one, which is also used computer/tablet-ready additional learning material. The complexity level ranges from basic shorter output in the lower to more autonomous and real-like communicative situations in the higher grades.

Introduction: Assessment of exercise tolerance (ET) plays an important role in qualifications for treatment and rehabilitation. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess ET in patients before and after inguinal hernia operations with Lichtenstein method. Material and methods: The cohort study included men with inguinal hernia divided into the study group (SG) (n = 50) and control (CG) (n = 50) undergone the Lichtenstein surgery. Patients from the SG met the criterion of coexistence of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Day before and on the second day after surgery, patients performed 6MWT and subjectively rate the exertion according to Borg- RPE- Scale (before, immediately after and 10 minutes after the test). 6MWT distance, Borg scale ratings were analysed. On the second day after surgery 66% of patients from the SG and 58% from the CG did not complete the test. Patients from the SG before (500,07 ± 40,38 m) and on the second day after surgery (243,46 ± 18,18 m) achieved shorter distances compared to the CG (565,93 ± 20,41 m; 249,47 ± 26,66 m), p < 0,001 i p = 0,481. A statistically significant negative correlation between 6MWT distance before surgery and age of the patients was confirmed. Patients who did not develop complications achieved significantly longer distances on admission (p = 0,003 for SG, p = 0,004 for CG). For 6MWT before surgery and 2 days after surgery, patients from the SG showed a significantly higher level of fatigue compared to the CG after the test (before: p = 0,001, after: p = 0,001). Patients form the SG often discontinued 6MWT and less tolerated effort compared to the CG. Hence, 6MWT is useful tool for ascertaining physical capacity and ET.

The article presents the results of studies of the heart rate variability for women, specializing in race walking, at different phases of the menstrual cycle (MC). The results of spectral analysis of heart rate indicate that the first half of the MC is dominated by the contribution of MC HF component, and the second half is dominated by the contribution of the LF component and an ovulatory phase is dominated by the contribution of VLF component in the total power spectrum. According to the results of the geometric analysis, the increase of Mo in menstrual and postmenstrual phases of the MC, reduction of AMo – in postmenstrual, ovulatory phases indicates an increase in the HR functional state in these phases. Decrease of the HR functional state we noted in the premenstrual phase: Mo rates have dropped, and AMo – increased. IT indicators of regulatory systems have increased in postovulatory and premenstrual phases of the MC. In this regard, we have recommended the use of significant and strenuous exercise with the consideration of female athletes’ HR functional state in different phases of the MC.

Chronic disease
Opis:
The aim of the study is to determine the effects of a multidisciplinary lifestyle intervention (including a short period of physical exercise) on some health-related variables, particularly on blood pressure, in an overweight/obese adult group. The main outcome was blood pressure lowering. The study involved 378 subjects affected by obesity or type 2 diabetes. The intervention included exercise, nutrition and psychological aspects. Before and after the intervention, several anthropometrics, cardiovascular risk related measures (height, body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, body composition and WHTR index) and physical exercise measures (aerobic capacity, flexibility and dynamic muscle strength) were evaluated through fitness tests. We observed a significant reduction in: blood pressure values, body weight, BMI, waist circumference, WHTR, fat mass and an improvement of fat free mass and physical exercise measures. The C.U.R.I.A.Mo. multidisciplinary approach is effective for reducing blood pressure, after relatively few exercise sessions (three weeks), particularly in patients with hypertension. The intervention can ameliorate the health status and physical performance in the short term, in normotensive and hypertensive adult subjects with overweight/obesity.

Opis:
Objectives To cross-validate the existing peak rate of oxygen consumption (VO₂peak) prediction equations in Dutch law enforcement officers and to determine whether these prediction equations can be used to predict VO₂ₚₑₐₖ for groups and in a single individual. A further objective was to report normative absolute and relative VO₂ₚₑₐₖ values of a sample of law enforcement officers in the Netherlands. Material and Methods The peak rate of oxygen consumption (ml×kg⁻¹×min⁻¹) was measured using a maximal incremental bicycle test in 1530 subjects, including 1068 male and 461 female police officers. Validity of the prediction equations for groups was assessed by comparing predicted VO₂ₚₑₐₖ with measured VO₂ₚₑₐₖ using paired t-tests. For individual differences limits of agreement (LoA) were calculated. Equations were considered valid for individuals when the difference between measured and predicted VO₂ₚₑₐₖ did not exceed ±1 metabolic equivalent (MET) in 95% of individuals. Results None of the equations met the validity criterion of 95% of individuals having ±1 MET difference or less than the measured value. Limits of agreement (LoAs) were large in all predictions. At the individual level, none of the equations were valid predictors of VO₂ₚₑₐₖ (ml×kg⁻¹×min⁻¹). Normative values for Dutch law enforcement officers were presented. Conclusions Substantial differences between measured and predicted VO₂ₚₑₐₖ (ml×kg⁻¹×min⁻¹) were found. Most tested equations were invalid predictors of VO₂ₚₑₐₖ at group level and all were invalid at individual levels.
