Opis:
Evapotranspiration values (ET) are crucial for agriculture where estimates of water reserves available for crops are the basis for scheduling the time and intensity of irrigation, yield prognoses, etc. Detailed evapotranspiration data are, therefore, of essential value. However, stations performing direct measurements of evapotranspiration are very scarcely distributed in Poland, and for this reason the interpolation of data is necessarily biased. Hence, evapotranspiration values are calculated using indirect methods (usually empirical formulas). Data from geostationary meteorological satellites are used operationally for the determination of evapotranspiration with good spatial and temporal resolution (e.g. Land-SA F product). The study of the relation between evapotranspiration values determined with the use of satellite data and those calculated using the Penman-Monteith formula was performed for the study area in Poland. Daily values and cumulated (i.e. decadal, monthly and yearly) values were analysed to determine the quality and possible added value of the satellite product. The relation between the reference ET and actual ET in two consecutive years was discussed, both for the whole test area and for individual stations, taking into account land use and possible water deficit in the root zone, represented by H-SA F (EUMETSA T Satellite Application facility supporting Operational Hydrology and Water Management) soil wetness index product. The differences are presented and discussed.

This paper presents data on daily precipitation totals from six meteorological stations and the climatic water balance for the stations located throughout Poland in 2011-2015. The following sequences of days without precipitation were distinguished: from 11 to 15 days, from 16 to 20 days, and of more than 20 days. The number of precipitation-free sequences during the growing season in 2011-2015 was highly variable. Over the studied period, there were from 1.0 rainless sequence in Wtelno to 2.4 such sequences in Gołębiów per one growing season. The most frequently occurring were sequences of 11-15 days, while those of 16-20 days were less frequent. In the years under analysis, all of the different sequences occurred most frequently in July, and the least frequently in April. The highest numbers of sequences without precipitation were recorded in the south-east of Poland (Zakalniki, Gołębiów).

Opis:
Drought is regarded as one of the environmental constraints threatening agriculture worldwide. Melatonin is a pleiotropic molecule prevalent in plants capable of promoting plant endogenous resilience to many environmental challenges including drought. Banana is an important staple food consumed in developing countries especially in Africa. In this research, we studied the role of melatonin in the growth of bananas subjected to drought under the Egyptian semi-arid conditions. To achieve this objective, a field experiment on banana (Musa spp., cv. Williams) mother plants and first ratoon was conducted on a private farm for two seasons - 2019 and 2020. Three irrigation treatments, 100, 90 and 80% irrigation water requirements (IWR) were used in conjunction with four concentrations of melatonin as a foliar spray (0 μmol, 40 μmol, 60 μmol, and 80 μmol) to determine the effect of both treatments on banana plant performance under drought. The results showed that there was a substantial difference between treatments, with the foliar application of melatonin at 80 μmol concentration improving most of the yield attributes, relative water content, total chlorophyll and proline with water deficit. However, the foliar application of the molecule lowered the biochemical characteristics mostly at 80% IWR under the Egyptian semi-arid conditions. Overall, there was a concentration-dependent response with regards to IWR for the two seasons 2019 and 2020.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to estimate the transpiration (TR) and actual evapotranspiration (EVT) of Scots pine stand, i.e. a typical Polish forest ecosystem. The study was performed in the 74−year−old stand growing on poor sandy soil. Transpiration of pine trees was determined by sap flow measurements of some individual trees by Thermal Dissipation Probe method. Actual evapotranspiration was determined based on measurements of soil moisture using Time Domain Reflectometry method and on changes in soil water storage. Based on these results, the reduction ratios were determined to estimate TR and EVT from potential evapotranspiration (ETP) calculated according to Priestley−Taylor (PT), Hargreaves (H), Makkink (M), Penman (Pen org), Penman−Shuttleworth (Pen Shut), the FAO Penman Monteith (FAO PM) and Penman Monteith (PM) methods. Measured transpiration of Scots pine stand reached 56% of the actual evapotranspiration. The methods used for the calculation of the ETP can be ranked in terms of the results from the lowest to the highest: METP were calculated for transpiration in a Scots pine stand in Poland and equal: PT – 0.256, H – 0.490, M – 0.562, Pen org – 0.301, Pen Shut – 0.279, FAO PM – 0.318 and PM – 0.308. Reduction factors for actual evapotranspiration amount to: PT – 0.462, H – 0.872, M – 0.999, Pen org – 0.535, Pen Shut – 0.498, FAO PM – 0.565 and PM – 0.548.

Opis:
Lysimeters represent the ideal tool for direct measurement of soil water balance components in soil profiles. Changes in the water content in a soil monolith can be measured with sufficient accuracy by the precise lysimeter weighing system. Water content changes in soil monolith as derived from lysimeter mass represent one of the basic water balance component. This paper deals with the development and comparison of individual soil water balance components in two different soil profiles from the Easter-Slovakian-Lowland. Two lysimeter vessels were filled monolithically with two different soil profiles covered with grass: one sandy soil profile from locality Poľany and one silty-loam soil profile from locality Vysoká nad Uhom. A constant groundwater level of 1 m below ground level was maintained in both soil profiles. Under the same meteorological conditions, all differences in the development of water balance components were caused only by the differences in soil profiles. The actual evapotranspiration and water flows at the bottom of the soil profiles were compared. Sandy soils are generally considered to be more prone to drought than silty-loam soils. Under the specific conditions of this experiment (maintaining a constant groundwater level) the opposite was shown, when the silty-loam soil profile was more prone to drought than sandy soil profile. Sandy soil profile from Poľany reacted more quickly to precipitation (or evaporation). Due to the higher hydraulic conductivity of the sandy soil compared to the silty-loamy soil, the groundwater level response to external stimuli was much faster.

The standardized precipitation index (SPI), standardized reference evapotranspiration index (SEI) and standardized climatic water balance index (SCWBI) were used to analyze moisture conditions in the vegetation seasons of 1954–1995 in Łódź. SPI and SEI were calculated on the assumption that empirical monthly precipitation sums and monthly sums of reference evapotraspiration are gamma distributed. Because monthly sums of climatic water balance are normally distributed, they required standardization to SCWBI. The aim of study was to compare those three indexes (SPI SEI and SCWBI) for years 1954–1995 in Łódź.
