    In the context of this article and in the perspective of interpretational approach we have considered possibilities of sociological analysis of a religious conversion. Based on examples of Evangelical Protestantism communities functioning on the territory of Ukraine the author analyzes peculiarities of building and structuring conversion narratives, a strategy of representation of the religious experience, linguistic means and tools used in this process. A religious conversion is considered as a particular discursive practice or a religious communication related to producing a narrative, which on the one hand reflects changes occurring to a person who passed through a conversion experience, and on the other hand the narrative itself preconditions such changes by means of adaptation of a canonic language of the religious group. Conversion cases considered by the author allow making a conclusion about existence of steady communicative conversion models at the level of Evangelical Protestantism which determinative distinction is reconstruction of the biographical experience in compliance with the “plot” predetermined by a canonic discourse of the considered communities.

    The article completes the picture of the situation of the Lutheran con-gregation in Białystok in the interwar period. It presents lively educational and cultural activities conducted by the parish, the latter to include: choirs, library, pastoral care, youth groups, military chaplaincy. The article also de-scribes the parish's relationship with the German People's Union in Poland which resulted in bad reputation and troubles for the community in the post-war period, although in fact these relations were limited and terminated quite fast. The issue of personal and national tensions within the congregation - illustrated by the case of division in the years 1931-32 - is also discussed. At that time two separate parish councils functioned that did not recognise and fought each other (one of them even questioned the authority of the Consistory in Warsaw and considered joining the congregation of another church). It even came to an intervention of the state authorities. After the breakout of World War II Podlachian Protestants – officially considered to be Germans – were mostly evacuated to German Reich. Those who remained were mostly exiled by the Soviet to Siberia or Kazakhstan andsome converted to Roman Catholicism. After the war only few remained. The congregation was closed in 1978 but since 2002 it is again active and vital. The article ends a series of four articles summarizing the history of the Lutheran congregation in Białystok.

    The 20th century was tragic for Protestantism on the Polish terri-tory.After restauration of Poland’s sovereignty in 1918, Evangelical community amounted to around 900 thousand people, the majority of them were followers of German nationality.Five different Churches of the Lutheran and Prussian Union confession as well as Moravian Congregation (Hernhuts) existed in the Second Republic of Poland.These Churches weremainly of a local nature and their union seemed to be a distant goal.World War II almost led to the destruction of the Polish Protestantism.The Nazi terror, communist repressions and reluctant attitude of a part of the Polish society, identifying Evangelicals exclusively with German element, questioned the future of Protestantism in Poland.After World War II parishes of the Prussian Union, Old Lutheran, Evangelical-Augsburg and Helvetian Churches practically ceased to exist.However, the Evangelical-Augsburg Church did survive and under the Act of the Parliament of 4 July 1947 all other parish communities were included into its structure, unfortunately after they had been illegally deprived of their property.In fact, in 1947 the Evangelical-Augsburg Church became the all-national Church and the only successor of all Lutheran and Union Churches on the Polish territory.

The Community also showed a large autonomy in relation to the sovereign authorities of the Polish Reformed Church, which was connected with the specifics of Calvinist denomination.     The Evangelical Augsburg Church
    Opis:
    Dynamic development of the Lutheran parish of Białystok, including the nearby towns in Podlachia (presented in previous paper) got unexpectedly interrupted when the World War I broke out. While retreating, the Russian Army devastated factories and evacuated pat of the population, especially those of German origin; others fled to Germany. All of the above turned Białystok from an important industrial centre into a city full of unemployment and poverty. The Lutheran parish, despite its very poor financial situation, met new needs of its members and other citizens and started certain new charity actions for the poor and victims of war; these included e.g. orphanage, soup kitchen, home for elderly, medical support. When the Polish jurisdiction was restored after 123 years, the parish in Białystok joined the Evangelical–Augsburg Church in Poland. New circumstances generated a number of new problems, both internal – like tensions between pro-Polish and pro-German parties coexisting in the congregation, and external – like annexation of a church, attempted by a local priest. When the World War II broke out, most of community members were deported.This paper describes an outline of the history of the parish from the outbreak of World War I to World War II, including all the charity’s actions, and also mentions other protestant communities in Białystok.

    Opis:
    The purpose of this article is to describe biographies of Lutheran pastors serving in Białystok congregation since World War I until the parish was definitely closed down in 1978. This includes three different stages of history of the parish: the first one covers the interwar period. The parish, although reduced and impoverished as a result of the World War I, still had over two thousand members, employed two pastors and conducted many cultural, social and charity activities. Since World War II broke out, only occasional Lutheran worship services for German soldiers were celebrated. During the era of the communist Polish People's Republic the community had only about 30 members and was served by visiting pastors, coming – rather rarely – from distant Warsaw and Masuria; in 1978 the congregation was officially closed. This paper shortly presents profiles of all pastors that served in Białystok during the above period.

    The paper briefly presents the history of Protestantism in Russia (16th–19th century) and the legal status of Protestant communities. An emphasis is placed on participation of the state and the individual tsars in increasing their number, as well as on the legal acts issued for them over the centuries. The article draws attention to the dependence of the right to freedom of religion, which they had in Russia, on their economic usefulness. It highlights the authorities’ interference in the functioning of Protestant Church as well as state protection of the prevailing faith – the Orthodox Christianity – despite numerous religious and economic privileges granted to the Protestants.

    The article discusses the legacy of Protestantism in Poland and the Protestant collections preserved in museum institutions in Poland. The author presents the collections of Evangelical artefacts amassed in various ways and forms and at different times, which thus constitutes a preliminary typology of the legacy of the Reformation. For simplification, she defines Evangelical objects as all objects which are part of the broadly-understood Protestant legacy. The spectrum of these objects is very broad, ranging from artefacts in traditional museum institutions, through sacred places, works of art, technical monuments, ephemera, cemeteries, to virtual collections of audiovisual and digitised legal instruments. The examples quoted in the text do not exhaust the subject, but evidence the vastness and richness of the legacy acquired as a donation after the Reformation movement initiated by the Augustinian monk Martin Luther.
    Artykuł podejmuje problematykę spuścizny protestantyzmu w Polsce i protestanckich zbiorów zachowanych w placówkach muzealnych w kraju. Autorka przedstawia zasób ewangelickich artefaktów gromadzonych w różny sposób, w różnej formie i w różnym czasie tworząc tym samym wstępną typologię reformacyjnego dziedzictwa. Wszelkie obiekty wchodzące w skład szeroko rozumianej protestanckiej spuścizny nazywa w uproszczeniu ewangelikaliami. Ich spectrum jest bardzo szerokie, począwszy od artefaktów w tradycyjnych placówkach muzealnych, przez budynki sakralne, dzieła sztuki, zabytki techniki, dokumenty życia społecznego, cmentarze, na wirtualnych kolekcjach dokumentów audiowizualnych i zdigitalizowanych aktach urzędowych kończąc. Przytoczone w tekście przykłady nie wyczerpują zagadnienia, a jedynie wskazują na ogrom i bogactwo spadku jaki otrzymaliśmy w darze po reformacyjnym ruchu zapoczątkowanym przez augustiańskiego mnicha Marcina Lutra.

    Artykuł ma na celu prezentację ewangelickiej koncepcji pracy w perspektywie wyłaniania się nowego porządku ekonomiczno-społecznego i tzw. czwartej rewolucji przemysłowej. Pokazuje, jak teologowie EKD adaptują reformacyjne nauczanie społeczne do bieżących okoliczności i dowodzi, że Kościół ewangelicki dostrzega potrzebę kształtowania systemowej koncepcji obejmującej zarówno modele stosunków pracy, jak i modele edukacji. Refleksja teologiczna EKD zmierza przede wszystkim do sformułowania aksjologicznego fundamentu, na którym mogą oprzeć się strategie polityczne czy społeczne. Przypomnienie teologicznego znaczenia pracy jako powołania jest ważnym czynnikiem tego fundamentu. Realizacja zamierzenia zakłada analizę wybranych tekstów Kościoła osadzoną w kontekście zwięzłego nakreślenia głównych punktów bieżących przemian technologicznych, ekonomicznych i społecznych.
    The article presents the Evangelical teaching on work in light of the emergence of a new socioeconomic order, denoted as the fourth industrial revolution. It shows how the theologians from the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) adopt the social teaching of the Reformation to the current situation and discusses their systemic vision of relationships in work and education. Theological reflection of the EKD focuses on the axiological foundation for the political and social programs. The concept of work as vocation is a crucial component of it. The article examines selected Church documents in the wider context of descriptions of the current upheavals in technology, economy and society.

    Ulrich Duchrow is one of the most influential contemporary Protestant theologians. He is the leader of a movement that describes itself as a radical reformation aiming to use the main principles of Protestant theology for a radical criticism of the contemporary socio-economic order. The author discusses the basic elements of Duchrow’s theology, and in particular his formulation of a European theology of liberation. The author also presents the radical reformation project and makes a detailed analysis of its 94 theses, which contain the project’s fundamental diagnoses and aims.

Tekst ma charakter prolegomeny do problematyki zmiany religijnej, która dokonała się w tymże regionie świata w ostatnim półwieczu. Opisuje nowych aktorów na religijnej scenie – ruchy ewangelikalne – ich specyfikę, źródła sukcesu, efekty działania, a także możliwe scenariusze rozwoju w najbliższej przyszłości.
    This paper is a voice in the debate on the religious landscape in Latin America, initiated after Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was elected Pontiff. I give an outline of the aspects of religious change in this region in the last few decades. I present new actors – evangelical movements – its general characteristics, reasons why they succeeded, output of their activity and some possible scenarios for the near future.

    The article describes selected evangelical schools in Warsaw from their establishment to the onset of the Second World War. Particular emphasis is placed on their history, characteristics and ecumenism. Their openness to other religions and the local community is made evident by the fact that the schools were attended by students of many Christian faiths as well as Jews, who sometimes exceeded the number of Protestant students. This study takes into consideration schools based at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Parish at Małachowski Sq and Kredytowa St as well as the Evangelical Reformed Parish school at Solidarność Av. These schools, though run by Protestants, functioned in a multinational and multiethnic environment as was typical for Warsaw in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

    U progu XVI wieku pojęcie państwa świeckiego było protestanckim teologom absolutnie obce, a dyskusja dotyczyła stopnia zależności związku wyznaniowego od państwa lub odwrotnie oraz wolności religii. Stosunek protestantyzmu do państwa świeckiego na przestrzeni dziejów nie był ani spójny, ani niezmienny, ale akcentując indywidualizm jednostki przyczyniał się do rozwoju ochrony jej autonomii, a tym samym rozdzielenia państwa i wyznań. Współcześnie Kościoły protestanckie posiadające status państwowego związku wyznaniowego bądź same aktywnie zmierzają w kierunku zrzucenia ostatnich symboli państwa wyznaniowego, co miało miejsce w Królestwie Szwecji, lub też są wewnętrznie poddawane presji, aby zdecydować się na taki krok (np. Kościół Anglii). Koncepcja państwa świeckiego, pozbawionego cech antyreligijnych i współpracującego ze związkami wyznaniowymi w sprawach dobra wspólnego (np. diakonia), jest powszechnie akceptowana w protestantyzmie, także polskim.
    At the beginning the concept of a secular state was absolutely alien for Protestant theologians, and their discussions concerned the degree of dependence of the religious organizations from the state or vice versa, and freedom of religion. The opinions of Protestantism on the secular state throughout history were neither consistent nor immutable, but emphasizing individualism contributed to the development of the protection of individual autonomy, and thus the separation of state and religions. Today, the last Protestant churches having the status of a religious organization actively moving towards dropping the last symbols of a religious state, which took place in the Kingdom of Sweden or are internally subjected to pressure to decide on such a step (eg. The Church of England). The concept of a secular state, devoid of anti-religious features and cooperating with religious organizations in matters of the common good (eg. Diakonia) is widely accepted in Protestantism, including Polish one.

    Opis:
    The main subject of the article was analysis of the sources devoted to the activity of Evangelical Society of Popular Education, the organization established by pastor Franciszek Michejda ( 1848-1921). The pastor was an outstanding religious and national activist in Cieszyn Silesia. The aim of the organization was the increase of the religious and national awareness among the Lutheran society. The pulished materials concerning the history of the Society activities were presented in four acpects: The history of the organization (establishment, the forms of activity) The subject matter of the Society Publishing activities Periodics and press publications The subject of the Society that was discussed in scientific publications was presented in a few contexts: personal (e.g the influence of the activists on the organization); national ( the importance of the society in shaping national awareness and patriotic feelings); social ( integrating various national groups); publishing ( written language as a tool of shaping the national and religious awareness); literary-scientific ( developing reading preferences and tastes in literature); finally cultural ( spreading culture in the region). Conducted query confirmed the necessity of carrying out detailed research of the subject including archival sources.
    Przedmiotem artykułu była analiza źródeł poświęconych działalności Towarzystwa Ewangelickiego Oświaty Ludowej, organizacji założonej przez ks. Franciszka Michejdę (1848-1921), wybitnego działacza religijnego i narodowego na Śląsku Cieszyńskim. Celem organizacji było podnoszenie w społeczności luterańskiej (ewangelicko-augsburskiej) świadomości religijnej oraz narodowej. Materiały publikowane, podejmujące zagadnienie historii oraz aktywności Towarzystwa zostały omówione w czterech aspektach: 1. Historii organizacji (założenie, formy działalności), 2. Osobowości Towarzystwa, 3. Działalności wydawniczej, 4. Periodyków oraz prasy TEOL-u. Podejmowana w literaturze naukowej tematyka związana z Towarzystwem była sygnalizowana lub oceniana w kilku kontekstach: osobowym (m.in. wpływu działaczy TEOL-u na kształt organizacji), narodowym (miejscu jakie zajmowało rozwijanie świadomości narodowej i patriotyzmu), społecznym (integracji reprezentantów różnych środowisk), wydawniczym (tj. słowa pisanego jako podstawowego narzędzia walki o świadomość religijną i narodową), literacko-naukowym (kształtowaniu gustów czytelniczych oraz popularyzację literatury) i kulturalnym (krzewieniu szeroko rozumianej kultury w regionie). Przeprowadzona kwerenda potwierdziła potrzebę szczegółowego opracowania tematu, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem źródeł archiwalnych.
