Opis:
The aim of this article is to present the results of research carried out within the European perspective on Literature, Culture, Language and Certification (EpoLCLC) project, according to three main axes: contemporary reading practices and the image of French literature among contemporary readers in a sociological approach; reading strategies of foreign language texts in a psycholinguistic approach; the place of translations and the representation of the role of the literary translator among contemporary readers in the light of conceptions related to cultural transfers and the global circulation of literature. The analysis and interpretation of the data collected during the course of the project will make it possible to compare the image we have of literature and the reader in our time with a set of real practices and beliefs, as defined by the people questioned during the study. More generally, it will be a question of drawing up, again from the data collected, a portrait of the European student as a reader and of defining the place that French and Francophone literature occupies in his or her daily practices.

This article tentatively provides acomparative outlook on Polish and Portuguese Romanticism. Taking as a starting point the famous parallel between the opposite ends of Europe sketched by the 19th-century historian Joachim Lelewel, the author claims that Polish and Portuguese literature, although they had almost no direct contact with each other, participated in the same system of cultural coordinates established by European Romanticism. At the same time, both nations had some sort of dispute or clash with Europe, developing syndromes of inferiority, as well as megalomaniac visions of their moral superiority. Almeida Garrett and Alexandre Herculano tried to provide a solution, harmonising their country with its European context. The conclusion accentuates the uttermost victory of this harmonising vision, presenting the contemporary Portuguese culture as fully Europeanised and contrasting it with the doubts concerning European identity that may be observed in contemporary Poland.

This paper presents the images of women in European culture and Old Polish Literature. The works devoted to women from the Middle Ages to Baroque focused on their social and political duties or artistic creation. The authors chose different literary forms: chronicles, poems, epigrams, laments, odes, sonnets, or epic works. The created characters included: a saint, a beloved lady, a donna angelicata, a hero of a chronicle or an autobiography. The works described their life, creative activity, or artistic aspirations. Some of them are panegyric poems, religious works, meditations, or love poetry. Women with an amazing sense of observation were discovering the space of literature and were participating in a world in its dynamic changes. They were excellent creators of humanistic and religious literature, referring to ancient tradition and European values.

The paper attempts to describe selected aspects of the impact of new concepts (such as history of European literature or history of the world republic of literature) that have entered into the literary and translation discourse and that coexist with the traditional categories such as ancient literature, modern literature, national literature, world literature, synthesis of the history of literature or process of the history of literature. The “confusion of tongues” (confusio linguarum) connected with the emergence of these novel concepts has undoubtedly affected the discipline of translation studies and, in particular, the promotional aspects of translation and self-translation as well as other related phenomena. An interesting role in this discussion is also played by what I refer to as “perspective,” from which the incorporation of given works or authors into European literature or world literature is being observed. In two out of the four analyzed works, the French (Parisian) perspective prevails, characteristic of a certain stage of comparative studies that seemed to have lost significance some time ago. The two remaining works, written from the Czech perspective, are addressed to English- and German-speaking readers, respectively.
Práce je pokusem popsat některé aspekty vlivu jež v dyskursu literárnědnem (i překladatelském) maji některe nové koncepty (vedle již zavedených: literatura starověká, literatura novověká, literatura obecná, literárněhistorická synteza, literárněhistorický proces). Konkrétně jde o koncepty historie evropské literatury, historie světové literatury a zejmena světové republiky literatury. To, co vycházi z těchto konceptu (svého druhu confusio linguarum) muselo změnit široce pojatou translatologii, především pokud jde o propagační silu překladu, autopřekladu, atd. Hodno úvahy je rovněž to, co popisuji jako „hledisko”, z něhož je možno pozorovat pronikaní konkretnych děl do „literatury evropské” nebo „literatury světové”. Ve dvou ze čtyř analyzovaných prací dominuje francouzské (resp. Pařížské hledisko), které je typické pro jisté období komparatistických studii. O tomto hledisku se soudi, že je již šťastně překonáno. Dvě další prace jsou napsány z české perspektivy a obracejí se k čtenářům anglo- a německojazyčným.
W artykule podjęto próbę opisania wybranych aspektów oddziaływania nowych koncepcji (takich jak historia literatury europejskiej czy historia światowej republiki literatury), które weszły do dyskursu literackiego i przekładoznawczego i które współistnieją z tradycyjnymi kategoriami, takimi jak literatura dawna, współczesna, literatura narodowa, literatura światowa czy proces historii literatury. „Pomieszanie języków” (confusio linguarum), związane z pojawieniem się tych pojęć powieściowych, niewątpliwie wpłynęło na dziedzinę studiów translatorskich, a w szczególności na promocję przekładu i autoprzekładu oraz na inne zjawiska z tym związane. Ciekawą rolę w tej dyskusji odgrywa również to, co nazywam „perspektywą”, z której obserwuje się włączanie danych utworów lub autorów do literatury europejskiej lub światowej. W dwóch z czterech analizowanych w artykule dzieł dominuje perspektywa francuska (paryska), charakterystyczna dla pewnego etapu badań porównawczych, który, jak się zdaje, już się zakończył. Dwie pozostałe publikacje, napisane z perspektywy czeskiej, są adresowane do czytelników anglo- i niemieckojęzycznych.

The paper deals with the portrayal of bureaucracy in Gehen, ging, gegangen (2015) by Jenny Erpenbeck, a novel that explores the European migrant cri-sis through the eyes of Richard, a recently retired professor of classics, who begins to interview refugees in Berlin. Erpenbeck’s work is a compendium of refugees’ stories, a novel about displaced persons in kafkaesque bureaucratic situations. The author describes two worlds, which ostensibly have nothing to do with each other : that of the widowed classical philologist and the young men from Guinea, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Mali. Their lives and mindscapes are fundamentally different from one anothers. While Richard occupies himself more and more intensely with the refugees by giving help and German les-sons, the reader becomes increasingly familiar with a much bigger problem relating to the fact that these young men are not allowed to work or travel: the German bureaucracy and the legislation of the European Union have damned them to idleness. Without any real prospects, they simply hang around together, sometimes with more and sometimes with less patience.

Opis:
Animal metamorphosis was a traditional component of witchcraft beliefs during the European early modern witch-hunts, during which it was taken for granted that witches could and did turn into animals regularly in order to easier do evil. It must be noted, however, that the witch-turned-animal motif was much less common in England, where witches did possess the shape-shifting abilities but relatively rarely used them. A likely reason for the difference, explored in the present paper, was the specifically English belief that most witches were accompanied and served by familiar spirits, petty demons that customarily assumed the shape of animals. It seems that the ubiquity of such demonic shape-shifters effectively satisfied the demand for magical transformations in the English witchcraft lore.

Discussions on the condition of Europe and on the European idea among intellectuals, especially German-speaking writers, have a long and rich history. Goethe and Schiller already spoke about in the 18th century and Novalis in the 19th century, the latter pointing to the European cultural community. After the experiences of the First and Second World Wars, of the cruelty and barbarity of warfare, of dehumanization and mass murder, the discussions on the essence of Europe revived. Richard Nikolaus Coudenhove-Kalergi and Heinrich Mann suggested the creation of a European Community which, although far from today’s European Union, in theory was supposed to serve as a protection against the repetition of nationalism and wars. In 1992 the European Union was founded on the groundwork of the EEC. Austrian-born Robert Menasse is another German-language writer who actively defends the European Union by proclaiming radical views, namely the departure from the nations and the creation of the Republic of Europe. His 2017 novel Die Hauptstadt (The Capital), awarded the Deutscher Buchpreis (German Book Prize) literary prize, is a tribute to Europe and an important contribution to the discussion on the European community and its future. Through the mouth of his alter ego in the novel, Prof. Alois Erhart, Menasse calls for the rejection of the attachment to nations and the creation of Europe of Regions. The book is basically the first European novel (about the European Union) by a German-writing author with such a progressive message. In the novel, the author, shows,  against the background of the life of EU officials in Brussels, the reality of Europe, the understanding of national and European identity and the burden of the Holocaust and the bestiality of nationalism for contemporary Europeans. The present paper discusses these views and inscribes them in the long lasting debate on Europe, indicating at the same time the progressiveness of the European idea.
Dyskusje o stanie Europy i idei europejskiej wśród intelektualistów, zwłaszcza pisarzy niemieckojęzycznych, mają swoją długą i bogatą historię. Już w XVIII wieku głos zabierali Goethe i Schiller, w XIX Novalis, który wskazywał na kulturową wspólnotę europejską. Po doświadczeniach I i II wojny światowej, okrucieństwie i barbarzyństwie działań wojennych, odczłowieczeniu i masowych mordach dyskusje nad istotą Europy odżyły. Richard Nikolaus Coudenhove-Kalergi czy Heinrich Mann zaproponowali wspólnotę europejską, która wprawdzie daleka była od dzisiejszej Unii Europejskiej, ale w teorii miała stanowić zabezpieczenie przed powtórką nacjonalizmów i wojen. W 1992 powstała Unia Europejska na podwalinach EWG. Pochodzący z Austrii Robert Menasse jest kolejnym pisarzem niemieckojęzycznym, który aktywnie występuje w obronie Unii Europejskiej, głosząc radykalne poglądy odejścia od narodów i stworzenia Republiki Europy. Jego powieść z 2017 roku pt. „Die Hauptstadt” [Stolica], uhonorowana nagrodą literacką Deutscher Buchpreis [Niemiecka Nagroda Książkowa], jest hołdem złożonym Europie i jednocześnie ważnym przyczynkiem w dyskusji o wspólnocie europejskiej i jej przyszłości. Ustami swego alter ego w powieści, prof. Aloisa Erharta, postuluje Menasse odrzucenie przywiązania do narodów i stworzenie Europy Regionów. Książka jest w zasadzie pierwszą powieścią europejską (o Unii Europejskiej) autora niemieckojęzycznego, w dodatku z tak postępowym przesłaniem. W powieści autor na tle życia urzędników unijnych w Brukseli ukazuje rzeczywistość europejską, pojmowanie tożsamości narodowej i europejskiej i obciążenie współczesnych Europejczyków doświadczeniem holokaustu i bestialstwa nacjonalizmów. Prezentowany artykuł omawia te poglądy i wpisuje je w anonsowaną już wielusetletnią debatę o Europie, wskazując na progresywność idei europejskiej.

Syntetyczne studium przynosi rezultaty wnikliwej analizy listów Elizy Orzeszkowej (zebranych i opublikowanych przez Edwarda Jankowskiego w dziewięciu tomach), zawierających dane o lekturowych jej doświadczeniach. Jak się okazuje, czytała wiele i oczywiście znała sporo wyróżniających się arcydzieł literackich czy filozoficznych. Jej korespondencja stanowi trwały dowód czytelniczej pasji. Orzeszkowa miała w rękach teksty spisane w połowie pierwszego millenium. Wypowiedziane przez nią słowa dokumentują, że znała Wyznania Augustyna z Hippony, a także słynne Listy Abelarda i Heloizy scholastycznego filozofa. Studiowała Kwiatki Franciszka z Asyżu i Tomasza à Kempis O naśladowaniu Chrystusa. Jej dydaktyczne zajęcia ujawniają, że pragnęła wzbogacić edukacyjny program o Eddę poetycką czy Pieśń o Nibelungach. Autorka Nad Niemnem wysoko ceniła Boską komedię Dantego Alighieri. Orzeszkowa pamiętała biografię i prace Torquata Tassa. Co więcej, przekładała na język polski Historię literatury angielskiej Hipolita Taine’a, dlatego też nie może dziwić obecność Williama Shakespeare’a w jej epistolografii. Powszechnie znane „być albo nie być” czy „źle dzieje się w państwie duńskim” zjawiają się w jej tekstach. Interesowała się także literaturą francuską i przyswoiła między innymi komedie Molièra, Gargantuę i Pantagruela Françoisa Rabelais’ego czy Bajki Jeana de la Fontaine’a. Artykuł wydaje się ważnym przyczynkiem do naszej wiedzy o lekturach Orzeszkowej oraz jej erudycji.
The synthetic study brings effects of thorough analysis of Eliza Orzeszkowa’s letters (gathered and published by Edward Jankowski in nine volumes) containing information on her reading experiences. As it appears, she read a lot and of course she was familiar with many outstanding literary or philosophical masterpieces. Her correspondences become a durable proof of reading passion. Orzeszkowa had in her hands texts written in the middle of the first millenium. Her own words document she knew Augustine’s of Hippo Coneffesiones and scholastic philosopher’s fameous Letters of Abelardto Heloise. She studied Francis’ of Assisi Fioretti and Thomas à Kempis’s The imitation of Christ. Her didactic activities reveal she wanted to enrich the educational programme with Poetic Edda or The Nibelungenlied (The song of Nibelungs). La Divina Commedia by Dante Alighieri was highly valued by the authoress of On The Niemen. Orzeszkowa remembered biography and works of Torquato Tasso. What is more, she even translated into Polish Hyppolyte Taine’s Histoire de la littérature anglaise (History of English literature), therefore the presence of William Shakespeare in her epistolography cannot be surprising. Commonly known “to be or not to be” or “something is rotten in the state of Denmark” may be found in some of her texts. She was also interested in French literature and acquainted with i.a. Molière’s plays and François Rabelais’ Gargantua and Pantagruelor Fables by Jean de La Fontaine. The article seems to be an important contribution to our knowledge on Orzeszkowa readings and her erudition.

The article presents the view that in modern Ukrainian literature about Europe, Europeans or Europeanism, has not quite central, but what is true and not peripheral place. Most likely, this topicis logically rooted in literary texts, which resembles more philosophical reflections on the present and future of Ukraine, is the search for the appointment of Ukraine in the modern world and contemporary culture. The author tried to prove that European values of Ukraine in the works of contemporary literature only for certain conditions can shape moral basis and customs of its customers. The author concludes that European values of contemporary Ukrainian writers is also linked with the content of songs, especially those that paint a picture of a man and his country, presenting their various problems, present their fate and life situations or political.
W artykule przedstawiono pogląd, że we współczesnej ukraińskiej literaturze temat Europy, Europejczyków czy europejskości, posiada całkiem nie centralne co prawda, ale i nie peryferyjne miejsce. Najprawdopodobniej ten temat jest logicznie zakorzeniony w tekstach literackich, co więcej przypomina filozoficzne rozważania nad teraźniejszym i przyszłym losem Ukrainy, jest poszukiwaniem mianowania Ukrainy we współczesnym świecie i współczesnej kulturze. Autor starał się udowodnić, że europejskie wartości Ukrainy w utworach współczesnej literatury tylko pod pewnymi warunkami mogą kształtować podstawy moralne i obyczajowość swoich odbiorców. Autor wysnuł wnioski, że wartości europejskie według współczesnych ukraińskich pisarzy łączą się również z treścią utworów, w szczególności zaś tych, które malują obraz człowieka i jego kraju, prezentują ich najróżniejsze problemy, przedstawiają ich losy i sytuacje życiowe lub polityczne.

Vladimir Nabokov podjął pracę wykładowcy akademickiego po wyjeździe do Stanów Zjednoczonych, gdzie wykładał na Wellesley College i Uniwersytecie Cornella literaturę europejską i literaturę rosyjską. W swoich wykładach pisarz zaprezentował kategoryczne i kontrowersyjne opinie na temat literatury, podzielił ją na arcydzieła i utwory, jego zdaniem mierne, stworzył hierarchię literacką, wynikającą z osobistych autorskich przekonań i upodobań. W literaturze rosyjskiej zachwalał twórczość M. Gogola, L. Tołstoja i A. Czechowa, negatywnie ocenił dorobek F. Dostojewskiego i M. Gorkiego. Z literatury europejskiej wyróżnił wybrane dzieła M. Prousta, J. Joyce’a i G. Flauberta, w każdym wypadku wskazywał na wartości kluczowe dla swojego dorobku, metody znamienne dla całej swojej prozy. Wykłady Nabokova stanowią nierozerwalną część jego dokonań literackich, są wykładnią literackiej filozofii pisarza. Владимир Набоков – профессор литературы Владимир Набоков стал преподавателем литературы после переезда в США, где читал лекции в колледже Уэлсли и Корнеллском университете по русской и зарубежной литературах. В своих лекциях писатель представил твердые и спорные суждения на литературу, разделяя ее на шедевры, и, по его мнению, посредственные произведения, сочинил литературную иерархию как результат собственных авторских взглядов и симпатий. В русской литературе восхищался творчеством Н. Гоголя, Л. Толстого и А. Чехова, отрицательно высказывался на тему достижений Ф. Достоевского и М. Горького. В зарубежной европейской литературе подчеркивал значение выбранных произведений М. Пруста, Д. Джойса и Г. Флобера, в каждом случае определяя ключевые ценности и значительные методы для своего прозаического творчества. Лекции Набокова составляют неотделимую часть его творческого наследия, являются интерпретацией литературной философии писателя.
When he arrived to the United States Vladimir Nabokov took a job as the university lecturer at Wellesley College and Cornell University. He taught Russian and European literature. In his lectures he presented a categorical and controversial opinions on literature, he divided it into masterpieces and works. In his opinion he created a hierarchy of literary resulted from his personal beliefs and preferences. In Russian literature, he praised works of M. Gogol, L. Tolstoy and Chekhov. He negatively assessed the achievements of F. Dostoevsky and M. Gorky. In the European literature he singled selected works of Marcel Proust, Joyce J. and G. Flaubert. In any case he pointed to the key values for his Works and methods characteristic of all his prose. Nabokov's lectures are the integral part of his literary achievements and they are writer’s literary philosophy.

U Poljskoj 2014. godina nije obilovala izdanjima hrvatske književnosti. U kulturnim i književnim časopisima pojavilo se dvadesetak pjesama i proznih fragmenata, nešto manje eseja i dramskih tekstova. Među monografijama posebnu pozornost privlači zbirka eseja Dubravke Ugrešić Kultura karaoke, kao i izbor stihova Ivana Hercega i knjiga pjesama Dorte Jagić Kauč na trgu. Spomenuta knjiga pjesama nagrađena je na prestižnom književnom natječaju „Europski pjesnik slobode”, koji je organizirao grad Gdanjsk. Posebno je istaknut prijevod pjesama na poljski jezik Małgorzate Wierzbicke. Članak analizira izabrane stihove iz nagrađene zbirke Dorte Jagić.
The year 2014 in Poland did not teem with many publications of Croatian literary works. In journals of culture and literature there were published a dozen or so poems and prose excerpts, less essays and plays. Among book publications attention should be paid to the collection of essays by Dubravka Ugresić Karaoke culture, the selection of poems by Ivan Herceg and the poetic tome by Dorta Jagić Sofa on the market. The last mentioned was awarded during the prestigious literary contest „The European Poet of Freedom” taking place in Gdańsk. Apart from the poetess the jury set the translator Małgorzata Wierzbicka apart for distinction. The article discusses selected poems by Dorta Jagić from the awarded collection.

The review concerns a collective work edited by Reinhard Ibler Der Holocaust in den mitteleuropäischen Literaturen seit 1989. (The Holocaust in the Central European Literatures since 1989). In the review, the concept of the volume is discussed – a comparative analysis of the most recent representations of the Holocaust in Central European literatures – and the selected articles, especially the ones devoted to the struggle with the Shoah in Polish literature and culture are mentioned.

The book written by Mar′âna Lanovik in Ukrainian language entitled The Relativity Theory of Literary Translation. Projections of Literary Criticism [Teorìâ vìdnosnostì hudožn′ogo perekladu. Lìteratoroznavčì proekcìї] is certainly worthy of the reader’s attention. The author (a woman), a Ukrainian professor of literature from the University in Ternople, has prepared an extensive monographic study of the problems from the field of translatology. Prof. Lanovik, who in her research deals with Russian and Ukrainian literature, theory of literature, comparative studies and theory of literary translation, has analyzed the issues referred to in the title of her book in a very thorough and profound manner. The book consists of an introduction, three main chapters, divided into sections and subsections, and conclusions followed by a long bibliographical list of primary and secondary literature. The author discusses three fundamental issues: 1) a psychological and cultural approach to literary translation, 2) a formal and structural approach to literary translation, and 3) translation and the problems of understanding the literary work. In my opinion, the book should be translated into English.
Książka autorstwa Mar′âny Lanovik napisana w języku ukraińskim, zatytułowana Teorìâ vìdnosnostì hudožn′ogo perekladu. Lìteratoroznavčì proekcìї [Teoria względności przekładu literackiego. Projekcje literaturoznawcze] jest warta uwagi czytelnika. Autorka, ukraińska profesorka literaturoznawstwa z Uniwersytetu w Tarnopolu, przygotowała obszerne opracowanie monograficzne zagadnienia z zakresu translatologii. Uczona z Ukrainy, zajmując się m.in. literaturą rosyjską i ukraińską, teorią literatury, komparatystyką (studiami komparatystycznymi), teorią przekładu literackiego z języków obcych, w sposób wnikliwy zanalizowała tytułową problematykę. Książka składa się ze wstępu, trzech rozdziałów zasadniczych, podzielonych na podrozdziały i jeszcze mniejsze cząstki tekstu (podsekcje) oraz wniosków (konkluzji) i obszernego spisu literatury przedmiotu na końcu publikacji. Autorka dyskutuje trzy zasadnicze zagadnienia: 1) psychologiczno-kulturoznawcze (psychologiczno-kulturologiczne) podejście do przekładu literackiego, 2) formalno-strukturalne podejście do przekładu literackiego oraz 3) przekład i problemy zrozumienia dzieła literackiego (wytworu). Moim zdaniem, książka powinna być przetłumaczona na język angielski.

A book in Ukrainian language entitled Poetics of Mysticality. A Collective Monography edited by Ol’ga Červìns’ka concerns the problems of so called sacrology. Fourteen authors focus on issue of sacred and literature. There are thirteen scientists from Ukraine and one from Japan. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part there are articles about ‘sacred’ (mysticality) as a category in poetics. Here authors describe paradoxes and borders of mysticality (Ol’ga V’âčeslavìvna Červìns’ka), mysticality in literature (Roman Volodimirovič Mnih), the Biblical glocalism and artistic literature (Igor Josipovič Nabitovič), symbol in poetics of ‘sacred’ (mysticality) (Zorâna Bogdanìvna Lanovik and Mar’âna Bogdanìvna Lanovik) In the second part of the book there are articles about ‘sacred’ in the projects of literary experience. Here eight authors describe the next problems: German romanticism and ‘sacred’ (Boris Borisovič Šalagìnov), understanding of ‘sacred’ in contemporary Japan literature (Koiti Itokava [Itokawa] from Japan), sacred motives of Jewish cabalism in a book by Paul Celan A Rose for Nobody (Petro Vasil’ovič Rihlo), Mona Lisa and expressionistic project of sacred experience in a novel A Thief by Georg Heym (Svìtlana Pavlìvna Macenka), ‘sacred’ in postmodern reception in the cemetery Highgate in London (Natalìâ Oleksandrìvna Vysoc’ka), mysticality and mystification as a counterpoint of an artistic text by Jean Iris Murdoch (Al’ona Anatolìїvna Matìjčak), transgression of Dostoevskij’s mystical reality in literary practice of Georges Bernanos (Roman Anatolìjovič Dzik), the ways of expression of mysticism (mystery, sacred) in recent promotional materials (Alla Volodimirìvna Sažina). There is one article in the summary of the book, where Oleksandr Oleksandrovič Korabl’ov describes the problem what philology should say about mistique?
