Opis:
The 19th century game management in Białowieża Primeval Forest (BPF), especially hunts for European bison, have been a subject of several works. The aspect of hunts motivated by research and museum needs have not been described in detail yet. The paper attempts at describing the administrative process behind such hunts and collecting all records of bison hunted or captured and carcasses acquired in BPF for museums, natural collections and universities in 1811−1914 (period covered by manuscript sources and published historical works with data on bison hunts available). Based on available sources, we calculated that in the period in question a total of 153 bison were hunted during ‘recreational' hunts (by tsars, their families and exalted guests with special tsars' permissions) and 56 were shot for purposes of study and research – therefore 27% out of 209 hunts had research motivations. Furthermore, 72 bison were captured alive (for zoos, cross−breeding and taming experiments) and carcasses of 89 bison (plus another 9 of unknown origin) were sent to museums and universities all around Europe. We believe that this little known aspect of the 19th century game management in BPF has had a significant impact on informing the scientific world and especially the general public about the European bison species, which in turn could have contributed to successful, international collaboration after the extinction of the species in the wild in 1919.

Twenty years of the Lowland European bison Bison bonasus bonasus conservation in captivity. The aim of the work was to track back changes taking place in the Lowland European bison population kept in captivity in years 1995-2015. The material for the study was data from European Bison Pedigree Book, collected from the years 1924-2015. The parameters such as inbreeding coefficient, kinship coefficient, contribution of founder genes and completeness of pedigree information were analyzed as well as the demographic structure of the population. Over the past 20 years, a steady increase in the population size has been observed. The share of different countries in Lowland wisent breeding also changed. The study showed that the accuracy of pedigree information decreased significantly between 1995 and 2015. In 1995 169 from 342 animals living in captivity had full pedigree information. In 2005 it was 76 from 320 animals. Within the population being alive in 2015, only 62 form 577 (10%) of all animals from Lowland line have full pedigree information, that leads to the founders of the population. An increase in the average values of inbreeding coefficient in the population and mean kinship was also observed.
Dwadzieścia lat ochrony linii nizinnej żubra Bison bonasus bonasus w niewoli. Celem pracy było prześledzenie zmian zachodzących w populacji żubrów linii nizinnej utrzymywanych w niewoli w latach 1995-2015. Materiał do badania stanowiły dane z Księgi Rodowodowej Żubrów zebrane z lat 1924-2015.

Opis:
Human or animal hair is considered to be a good indicator of the content of bioelements or toxic elements in human and animal organism. Its analysis is a good alternative for the arduous obtaining blood or biopsy samples. The aim of the performed research was the assessment of some chosen bioelements in the organism of European bison on the basis of their analysis in hair. The investigation material comprised hair samples obtained from 22 animals. All animals were divided into groups according to gender (males, females) and age (calves up to one year of age and animals older than 2 years). Samples were mineralized in nitric acid, under pressure in the microwave apparatus. The content of phosphorus, sulphur, magnesium, iron, titanium and vanadium were determined in hair samples. The content of these elements was determined using the ICP-AES method in accredited laboratory. The accuracy of determinations was tested using the standard reference material. The mean content of phosphorus in hair amounted to 245.14 mg · kg–1, SD 65.00, magnesium 97.32 mg · kg–1, SD 33.16, iron 119.48 mg · kg–1, SD 83.31 and titanium 2.368 mg · kg–1, SD 2.097. In case of these elements, differences depending on gender and age were statistically insignificant. Mean content of sulphur in the European bison hair amounted to 3.41% with equalized content in the herd (SD 0.22%). Here also statistically insignificant differences depending on gender were observed. However, a statistically significant difference (p ≤ 0,05) was demonstrated which depended on animal age. Mature European bisons had more sulphur in hair as compared to calves. The concentration of vanadium (0.362 mg · kg–1, SD 0.396 on the average) significantly differed in hair depending on the European bison age with much higher values in adult animals (calves 0.260 mg · kg–1, animals older than 2 years 0.686 mg · kg–1). Similar data were obtained while investigating hair of sea mammals.

Opis:
The level of knowledge and attitude to European bison from a local perspective a preliminary study in north-eastern Poland. Among main reasons of lower acceptance of European bison (Bison bonasus) by local communities is the fear of the extent of the possible damage. The fear may be related to myths about the ecology of European bison. The aim of this study was to analyse the level of knowledge of local communities regarding the European bison, and its relation with the level of acceptance for the species. The survey was conducted in the area with already existing population of European bison (Bielsk Forest District), and the area where its reintroduction just have started (Augustów Forest District). The study was based on questionnaires fi lled out personally by workshop participants. The questionnaires contained a test on the level of knowledge on the European bison, the attitude towards this species, and basic information about the respondent. We found that the attitude to European bison was not driven by the level of knowledge. Respondents from Bielsk Forest District presented signifi cantly lower level of acceptance than respondents from Augustów Forest District. The study confi rms, that the level of acceptance towards protected species that may cause human-wildlife confl icts is related to the management methods in the area.

Opis:
Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) (Flaviviridae, Flavivirus) is an arthropod-borne virus, an etiologic agent of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), an infection involving the central nervous system. The disease is endemic in a large region in Eurasia where it is transmitted mainly by Ixodes ricinus in Europe and I. persulcatus ticks in Asia. This is the most important tick-transmitted arbovirus of human pathogenicity in Europe. The Białowieża Primeval Forest is a well-known endemic focus of tick-borne encephalitis. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of tickborne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in European bison, the important hosts of ticks in the Białowieża Primeval Forest. In the years 2005–2009, 95 blood samples were collected from European bison and examined for the presence of TBEV using nRT-PCR method. No positive results were obtained. For better understanding of TBEV vertebrate reservoir hosts in Poland, further investigations are needed.

Opis:
Contemporary factual evidence treats the creation of the Society for the Protection of the European Bison as the beginning of the European bison restitution. The event that is considered decisive for this process was Jan Sztolcman’s speech at the Congress of Nature Conservation in Paris in the spring of 1923. Thanks to the search for documents stored in the Archives of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in Krakow as well as articles published in years 1919−1924 in the press dedicated to forest, hunting and nature protection, it was established that the discussion on the necessity and possible ways of restoring this species to nature began in Poland as early as in 1921. In 1922, a private fund initiative arose to restore the European bison to the Białowieża Primeval Forest, curb the prevailing poaching, and recreate the former reputation of this hunting ground. It is possible that this concept – promoted by Władysław Janta−Połczyński – was treated as competitive to the creation of a representative hunting ground in Białowieża Primeval Forest planned from May 1921. For this reason, it was blocked by the government, and the funds donated to the restitution of European bison were not utilised. This delayed the actual beginning of the restitution of this species in the Białowieża Primeval Forest by several years, and the activities of hunters gathered around Władysław Janta−Połczyński at that time are now completely unknown. The article introduces some details of this concept, but also presents an unknown document from 1921, which shows that there was a notion of restoring European bison in the Białowieża Primeval Forest among state officials already at that time.

Opis:
The article, based on a detailed query in the archival issues of “Łowiec Polski” from 1899 to 1939, shows the perception of the bison and the Białowieża Primeval Forest among the authors and readers of this periodical. The founder and first editor-in-chief of the magazine was Jan Sztolcman, a naturalist best known for his crucial role in saving the European bison. Among the collaborators of the magazine were the best naturalists of that period, so the subject matter undertaken in its papers was much broader than just strictly hunting. This article discusses issues related to the Białowieża Primeval Forest and its most valuable inhabitant (European bison) presented in the journal from the perspective of nature conservation, old hunting traditions, the search for the last free-living European bison in the Białowieża Primeval Forest, European bison breeding in Pszczyna, international efforts to rescue the European bison, monographs about the species published in the inter-war period, issues of European and American bison hybridisation, and finally, the return of the European bison to the Białowieża Primeval Forest. The journal was examined for the first time from the point of view of the history of natural sciences. Analysis of the content of the journal, often unpublished elsewhere, makes “Łowiec Polski” one of the most important sources of information about the European bison and the Białowieża Primeval Forest during this period.

Opis:
Asworthius sidemi Schulz, 1933 is a blood sucking gastrointestinal nematode, primarily typical for Asiatic deer. It was found for the first time in Poland in European bison in 1997. To estimate the level of invasion of A. sidemi and histopathological changes connected with the presence of the parasite in the years 2004-2007 parasitological and histopathological examinations of 54 European bison from Białowieża Forest were carried out. Parasitological examination was carried out by the sedimentation method and A. sidemi were diagnosed under a binocular microscope. Samples for histological examination were collected from the abomasum and duodenum walls as well as from regional lymph nodes. Tissue samples were then fixed with 10% buffered formalin, embedded in paraffin, cut in to 5 μm thick sections and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). Parasitological examinations showed the presence of fourth stage larvae and juvenile forms of A. sidemi. The maximal intensity of invasion rose systematically from 4470 A. sidemi nematodes in 2004/2005 to 44310 in 2006/2007. Histopathological examinations showed infiltrations of inflammatory cells in the walls of abomasa and duodena at various levels of intensity (mainly lymphoid cells and eosinophils), hyperemiae, oedemae and lesions of mucosa and proliferation of lymphatic follicles. In individual cases of dysplasia of epithelial cells, atrophy or hyperplasia of glands and the presence of parasites in the lumen or walls of the abomasum/duodenum were observed. In one case, parasitic nodules were found. In regional lymph nodes proliferation of lymphatic follicles, presence of eosinophils and desolation of reproduction centers were observed. Intensification of histopathological changes was connected to a considerable degree with the developmental stage of A. sidemi as shown by parasitological examination.

Opis:
The artefact under study was found in 2017 in a gravel pit located in the village of Borki, Radzymin County in Eastern Poland (Fig. 1). The object was unearthed during the industrial extraction of sand from the former bed of the Bug River and, according to the finder, was located at a depth of about 16–18 m. The tool is 21 cm long, with a width of 6 cm and a thickness of approx. 4 cm, both measured at half the length of the specimen. The blade is bevelled on one side, and the object is cream-coloured (Fig. 2). The mattock was made out of a radial bone of a large ruminant, probably aurochs or European bison (Fig. 3). The radiocarbon date of 9180± 50 BP (Poz-97932) obtained for the mattock from Borki makes it one of (if not) the oldest known objects of this kind and allows us to assume that it was made during the Preboreal Period (Fig. 5). The vast majority of objects analogous to the mattock described come from the Boreal period and are associated with Maglemosian communities. However, considering the territorial range of the Maglemosian Culture, which covered the area of the South Baltic Lakelands (J. Kabaciński 2016, 263, 264, fig. 22), and the fact that the artefact was discovered in Mazovia, it seems much more probable that it is connected with the Komornica Culture. As a result of traceological analysis, interesting technological and functional traces were observed on the item. As regards the methods employed to form the tool, the wide use of the nicking technique (Fig. 2:B, 6:D.E; É. David 2007, 39), used to shape the blade and flat surfaces of the specimen, draws particular attention. The traces of use-wear registered on the mattock (Fig. 6:L–N) indicate that it was most likely used for chopping/hewing soft wood. The tool from Borki is undoubtedly unique in form and currently has no strict analogies among other early Holocene objects made of aurochs long bones from either Poland or Europe. Radiocarbon dating places the mattock among the few Mesolithic bone artefacts from the Preboreal Period known in Poland. Traceological analyses have shown a number of interesting technological and use-wear traces on its surface, which can provide a good basis for further technological and functional studies of this type of object.
