Opis:
Investigations were conducted on the strongly infested by microbes embryos isolated from seed stratified in non-sterile conditions or from tree buds. The results showed, that PPM (Plant Preservative Mixture, produced by Plant Cell Technology, Inc.) was very useful for increasing the percentage of sterile cultures disinfected in a 5% solution of NaOCl. The best way of applying PPM turned out to be adding the substance directly to the growing medium. At the concentration of 2 or 4 cm3 x dm-3 of PPM there was an 30% increase in percentage of sterile of in vitro cultures developed from embryos and 70-80% of cultures developed from buds, as compared with the control without PPM. At the range of concentrations employed in this study, no negative effects of PPM upon the development and growth of callus were observed.

Opis:
The paper provides information concerning the growth of pine, spruce, oak, beech and fir stands based on the research conducted by the European Forest Institute in a number of the European countries and in Poland. Noteworthy i.a. is the increase in volume increment of spruce and pine in some stands in Germany up to 250% of the values given in the yield tables. Since the early fifties of the past century beech and sessile oak in Bavaria have exhibited an increase in the height growth and volume increment. Their values markedly exceed those provided in the tables. Fir, similar to spruce, pine and beech shows the reduction in the increment and dieback in the regions under heavy industrial pollution. However in other regions under the impact of air pollution the response of pure and multispecies stands with the share of fir was positive. In Poland, a rapid decline in the dbh increment in three tree species (fir, spruce, pine) in the seventies was greater than in the sixties. In 1981−1989, fir showed a favourable growth in diameter; this positive tendency was noticed in the whole range of fir distribution in Poland, though the increment did not return to the level before its decline. The pine increment regenerated after 1990. The poorest increment was found in spruce in the eighties following its collapse in the seventies (Żywiecki and Śląski Beskid).

Opis:
Poland has rather rigorous regulations concerning forest tree seed zones. The high commercial quality of the coastal (northern) and upland (southern) beech provenances has stipulated the need to verify their performance also in the central Poland as possible quality seed source. A trail consisting of three open pollinated half−sib provenances has been established in Forest Experimental Station in Rogów in the year 1963. After the stand had reached the age of 44 years, a prognosis has been made focused on assessing the final age assortment structure of particular trees. The results show that the local population is at present the poorest and it is expected to produce the lowest wood quality in the mature stand. It is concluded that, following the results of 44 years, both the upland beech and – first of all – the coastal beech are due to their excellent performance potentially valuable seed source for the central Poland.

Opis:
The studies were carried out in 12 beech stands, growing on mountain fresh forest site in Magurski National Park. Stands differed in respect of exposition (northern and southern) and age - lower age classes (21-60 years old) and higher age classes (81-120 years old). This paper presents evaluation of frequency of disease symptoms occurrence in the crowns and on the trunks of beeches. The presence and the place of occurrence of fungus Ascodichaena rugosa and insects Cryptococcus fagisuga and Ectoedemia liebwerdella, which could be connected with beech bark necrosis on the trunks were noted down. In each stand 50 trees, growing side by side in center of the stand, were analyzed. Among 600 analyzed trees of Fagus sylvatica, 2.6% had a dead top. Crown thinning were present on 51.8% of trees. It appeared frequently in higher age class stands and didn’t cover more than ¼ of the crown. Moreover, in crowns of 4.1% of trees the leaf chlorosis appeared. The most frequent symptom on trunks of beeches were local necroses (98% of trees), that were sometimes connected with slime fluxing (3.3%). Necroses were the most number in stands growing on the southern exposition and on south parts of the trunks. Cryptococcus fagisuga appeared mostly in high age class stands. Intensity of its appearance was similar on the trees growing on the southern and northern exposition (respectively, 48.3% and 53.3%). Particular parts of the trunks were colonized with similar frequency by C. fagisuga irrespective of cardinal points (N-29.3%; S-21.7%; W-22.7%; E-26.2%) and number of necroses on the trunks. Ascodichaena rugosa appeared on 8.6% of trees, more frequently on their north parts of the trunks (7.3%). In the places colonized by fungi A. rugosa, insect C. fagisuga was absent. Occurrence of larvae of Ectoedemia liebwerdella was mostly found on trunks of beeches growing on the southern exposition (43.0%), on 35.3% of trees they colonized south parts of trunks. There wasn’t observed any connection between the occurrence of these larvae and symptoms of local necroses.

This paper reports 45 years of study on a provenance trail of European beech planted in the Rogów Experimental Forest in central Poland (190 m a.s.l.). Survival, growth and crown shape are analyzed in unthinned till the age of 40 years 3 provenances. The response to the thinning, and selected physico−mechanical properties of wood are analyzed. It is concluded that the poor quality and scarcely distributed local populations of beech is in many respects over−competed by the coastal beech provenance.

The study focused on tree rings of European beech in the stands in the Iława Forest District. The aim of the study was to analyse the effect of climatic conditions on the formation of the annual ring width at the limits of beech natural distribution in an area where the Atlantic and Continental climate meet and overlap. The mean tree−ring width was relatively wide and equalled 2,89 mm. The obtained time series covered the years between 1900 and 2002. On the basis of the response function analysis and indicator years it was demonstrated that there was a considerable impact of spring/summer precipitation on annual growth ring formation.

In autumn 2006, i.e. in the 5th year from the culture establishment, and when the tree growth had finished, on each culture we measured tree height, height increments in the years 2004−2006 and root collar diameters. We also noted the presence of the main shoot and top bud on the main shoot, size and color of the assimilative apparatus and determined the survival rate of the seedlings. The assessed and measured features allowed for determination of the seedling quality and vitality. Mean values of all features were calculated for plots and their groups, distinguished on the basis of their belonging to particular forest districts and regions as well as basing on the presence or absence of stand protection and in regard to stand disintegration. The results indicate the poor condition of parts of the cultures with beech. Generally, the quality and vitality of the seedlings was assessed to be average, with a smaller or larger tendency towards the decrease. This points towards difficulties in performing stand regeneration and in varying their composition in the higher locations of the Beskid Śląski and Żywiecki Mts., which experience extreme climatic conditions. This was observed particularly on height and quality parameters worsened along with an increase in a degree of stand disintegration. Many beech seedlings grew better on the fenced plots than on the unfenced ones, which indicates positive results of the protection of cultures against game and justifies their fencing.

The study presents the results of investigation on reaction of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) leaves observed next year after planting seedlings in different positions in a young spruce stand located in upper mountain conditions. The methods of chemical analyses and assessments of chlorophyll fluorescence were applied with the aim to evaluate a course of leaf adaptation. In the young spruce stand located in the Karkonoše Mts, bare root beech seedlings after cultivation in full light were planted into three main positions to spruce trees (under the crown, within crown perimeter and in stand gaps). Next year after planting, the total biomass, leaf nutrient content and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were evaluated. The beech trees planted under spruce (Picea sp.) crowns had significantly lower specific leaf mass and the mean leaf area was decreasing from shade to sun. Differences in nutrient contents were not significant between the treatments. We found significantly higher values of minimal (F0) and the maximum fluorescence (Fm) as well as of the maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) in the leaves of beeches growing under the spruce crown. Significant differences among treatments were found also in the courses of the values of maximum fluorescence yield Y(II) and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ). Our study indicated that bud forming processes are only partially responsible for physiological properties of beech leaves evaluated next year after planting. Photosynthetic performance is also influenced by actual growing conditions. A great part of acclimation occurs already in the first year after planting (change of the light conditions). We speculate that this phase of gradual acclimation of the assimilation apparatus can be one of the reasons of physiological weakening of the plant after planting to different light environment.

Support of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) plantations by amelioration has been tested in air-polluted sites in the mountains since 1993. The research locality is a site with humic podzol soils at an altitude of 960 m a.s.l. Dolomitic limestone (1 kg per tree) was mixed with soil used for planting tree seedlings. According to the results of a 15-year investigation (1993– 2008), liming had a positive effect on beech tree growth, while the positive effect of liming on tree growth was temporary in the case of sycamores. Ca content was higher in the limed beech plantations throughout the observation period. Soil analyses (sampled in 2002) showed that the application of dolomitic limestone influenced soil conditions markedly in terms of increased pH. The pH values measured in H2O increased from 4.9 to 6.2 for beeches and from 4.3 to 6.1 for sycamores.

Investigations were carried out at timber storage sites (depots) on large-sized pine (110 pieces) and beech (130 pieces) wood from three forest districts within the territory of the Regional Directorates of the State Forests (RDSF) of Łódź, Lublin and Kraków. As a result of a comparison of both classification systems, it was proved that in the case of pine wood classified according to EU norms, the shares of the number of pieces and volume in classes B and C decreased, whereas they increased in class D when compared with Polish classification. Analogically, in the case of beech wood, a decrease in the share of the number of pieces and volume in classes A, B and D, and an increase in class C were recorded. Among the most common defects that influence the classification of both sorts of wood, open and burl knots as well as curvatures are recognised, while in the case of beech wood, shakes and galls (disease T stains) are encountered. The results of the classification determined differences in the wood value. According to the pricelists for wood standing in forest districts where the raw wood under investigation originated, it was established that the value of the pine wood classified according to the EU norm decreased by ca. 7.6% when compared with the value estimated using the Polish norm. The value of the beech wood was nearly identical in both cases, which was mainly due to the higher share of wood of class C and lower share of class D upon applying the EU standards, in comparison with the Polish classification system.

Opis:
The article describes horizontal structure of the tree layer, natural regeneration, snags and crown projections of natural beech stands on three permanent research plots in the wide altitudinal range in the Krkonoše Mts (Czech Republic). The spatial structure was classified from 1980 to 2010 and subsequently the prediction of spontaneous development with an outlook for 30 years (to 2040) was done by growth simulator. Hopkins-Skellam index, Pielou-Mountford index, Clark-Evans index and Ripley’s K-function were calculated. Further, the vertical structure and total diversity index was evaluated. The horizontal structure of individuals in the tree layer had not changed significantly during the monitored years. Tree spatial pattern of the lowest altitude lying herb-rich beech forest was mostly regular to random, in acidophilous mountain beech forest predominantly random and in fragments of beech groups around the timberline aggregated. Juvenile growth on all investigated plots was distributed aggregated and snags randomly. The horizontal structure of crown projection centroids had always higher values toward the regularity than tree layer and was random to regular. The result of principal component analysis also confirmed that spatial pattern was dependent on the altitude, but also on the number of trees.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of an analysis of the influence of soil bulk density in a forest nursery plot on the growth and quality parameters of Scots pine and European beech seedlings. Particular density variants were obtained using a tractor device exerting controlled pressure on the soil, while field examinations were performed on an area of ‘Kłaj’ forest nursery in Niepołomice Forest District. Three series of plots were prepared for each species, applying a unit pressure of the values of 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 kPa, corresponding to the dry bulk density in the range of 1.03-1.19 g cm-3, and control plots without the pressure. Seeds of the examined species were sown on the prepared plots, and after 6 months of growth the seedlings were subjected to biometric analysis determining differentiation in root neck diameter, length of the above-ground part and root system, as well as dry mass of particular parts of the plant. The quality of the seedlings was also determined using the method of Schmidt-Vogt. The results obtained show that the change in dry bulk densitysoil significantly affected most of the growth parameters of theexamined seedlings. Especially high negative correlations were obtained for the length and dry mass of the root system. A significant influence of dry bulk density variant on all growth parameters of Scots pine seedlings, and on some parameters of European beech was demonstrated. An increase in soil bulk density clearly caused also a deterioration of European beech seedlings quality.
