Pancreatic cancer is often fatal due to delayed diagnosis and treatment difficulties. Objective: To analyze selected SPINK1, CTRC, CFTR, and PRSS1 gene mutations in cancer tissue and blood samples of patients with pancreatic tumors. Materials and method: We enrolled 16 consecutive patients diagnosed with pancreatic tumors. We collected cancer tissue, normal pancreatic tissue, and blood samples for genetic tests. The control group consisted of 419 healthy individuals. Peripheral blood samples were collected from all study participants in EDTA-coated tubes. Results: Out of 16 patients with pancreatic tumors, 12 had pancreatic cancer on microscopic examination (mean age, 60.2 years). The CTRC polymorphism Hetero p.G60=(c.180C>T) was found in 5 patients with pancreatic cancer (41.7% vs. 18.6% in the control group). One patient with pancreatic cancer and a positive family history had the SPINK1 (p.N34S) mutation [8.3% vs. 2.9% (12/419) in the control group]. One patient with pancreatic cancer had the CTRC (p.R254W) mutation [8.3% vs. 1% (4/419) in the control group]. Conclusions: Our preliminary results show that the CTRC polymorphism p.G60= (c.180C>T) is frequent in patients with pancreatic cancer. However, further research is needed to verify our findings.

Opis:
Existence outside of marriage associated, especially in the case of women, with the lack of children carries an almost universal stigma. It has historically been perceived as a violation of social norms and a danger to local communities and states. In the latest couple of decades, a growing number of studies focused on the stereotypes and stigma of singlehood, but not many of them addressed the issues of stereotype formation and the etiology of stigma related to never-married people. This paper explores the relationship between Romanian terms referring to never-married people and the local socio-demographic context from a historical perspective. It also makes a few cultural-comparative remarks to show that, as it is said, language mirrors culture and society. The number and the linguistic form of the available words for men and women who did not marry reflect society’s concerns at one point in time or another. The way the language is used affects the persistence of category representation and the consensualisation of stereotypes. Finally, this paper supports the idea that historical, multidisciplinary and comparative approaches provide a better understanding of social and cultural realities.

Bladder cancer is a disease characterized by an abnormal growth of cells in the urinary bladder. Potentially, it can infiltrate nearby tissues and metastasize to distant organs. It affects more than 3 million people, with over 430,000 new cases a year. Environmental risk factors have significant impact on the development of bladder cancer, with tobacco smoke being the single most significant risk factor. Arsenic, nitrates, and chlorine in drinking water are also potentially associated with an elevated risk of this disease. In this paper, we review most significant environmental risk factors for primary bladder cancer and analyze prevention methods.

Objectives This study has aimed at identifying prevalence of injury-occurrence in 24 pre-professional-ballet-dancers (females, 16–18 years of age), and identifying the associations between the body-built and prevalence of injuries. Material and Methods The sample of variables included: body mass, body height, and 3 somatotype characteristics (mesomorph, ectomorph and endomorph) and data on injuries over the preceding year. Results Dancers were mostly ectomorphic-mesomorph (endomorphy: 2.6±0.54, mesomorphy: 3.99±0.77, ectomorphy: 3.23±0.54). The most commonly injured locations were the foot (17% of all injuries) and ankle (17%). Majority of the injuries occurred while practising but 37% of hip-injuries occurred while performing. Ankle-injuries resulted in longest absence from ballet. Endomorphy was related to ankle-injury (odds ratio (OR) = 1.9, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.4–2.3), ectomorphy to foot injury (OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.1–2.9), and body-mass to injury to the toes (OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.4–3.1). Conclusions The results of this study allow for recognizing those dancers who are particularly vulnerable to injuries of certain body location. A more profound analysis of the possible mechanisms that lead to hip-injury during performance is needed. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(1):151–159

Opis:
Microbiota studies have uncovered numerous associations between human gut microbes and health-related outcomes. However, since most of these correlations were observed in cross-sectional studies, the causal infe rence is limited. The causal contribution of microbiota can be evidenced through disease induction or exacerbaiton in animal models aeftr fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from patients. In this article we present a protocol for a scoping review on the subject of FMT from humans to animals. Besides assessing how the published studies were conducted, in that scoping review we aim to find out whether enough literature exists to conduct a systematic review of the evidence for microbiota participation in the pathophysiology of any human non-infectious disease or phenotypic trait. We will conduct searches on the Web of Science plaotfrm and databases: MEDLINE, Scopus, EMBASE. Citation chasing of included studies will be done. We will include studies assessing the eefcts of FMT collected from people with certain medical conditions on animals. Studies that recruited only healthy humans or used other animals as donors will be excluded. The results of this literature search will be tabulated and discussed. Moreover, we will provide a short list of human non-infectious diseases or traits with the highest number of FMT patient-to-animal studies. Acute pancreatitis is one of the most common surgical disease, and thus cause of hospitalization. Incidence and etiology of this condition demonstrates large regional differences. This situation is a substantial financial burden forhospital district, and changes in organization structure and funding medical service should be taken under consideration. The aim of the study was to record the epidemiology with etiology, diagnosis and treatment of acute pancreatitis in large district (77 000 inhabitants).Material and methods. A meta-analysis study of all 298 patients admitted to Hospital St Hedwig in Trzebnica, in the six-year period from 2005 to 2010, with acute pancreatitis was performed.Results. Acute pancreatitis was diagnosed in 298 patients in the six - year period, giving an estimated incidence of 64.4 per 100 000. Among the group of 441 admissions for acute pancreatitis in 298 patients was confirmed. Severe acute pancreatitis developed in 22.5% (67/298) of patients, more often in males 56/208 (27%) than in females 11/90 (12%). Gallstones were found as an etiological factor in 27% (80/298), and alcohol intake in 49% of patients. 211/298 (70%) patients had only one attack, whereas 29% (87/298) were readmitted with 230 relapses. The risk of recurrent pancreatitis was 48% in alcohol induced and 6,25% in gallstone induced pancreatitis. 53/298 patients (17%) were operated, ERCP procedures were performed in 24.Performed operations: necrosectomy in 25/53 (47%), elective cholecystectomy in 16/53 (30%), open drainage of abdominal abscess in 5/53 (9%), open drainage of cysts in 5/53 (9%), Jurasz's operation in 2/53 (3%). Majority surgical treatment was carried out in 68% cases with severe acute pancreatitis. Mortality due to acute pancreatitis was 3% (10/298); 15% in severe pancreatitis.Conclusions. 1. Acute pancreatitis continues to be an important clinical problem. 2. Severe, necrotic acute pancreatitis is associated with high mortality rates. 3. The ethanol-intake-related episodes of acute pancreatitits are much more prevalent than the gall-stone-related ones. 4. After the exclusion of ethanol- and gall-stones-related etiologies, the subsequent diagnostic process should aim at excluding neoplastic process of the head of pancreas.

Opis:
Rabdomioliza to ciężki, potencjalnie zagrażający życiu zespół objawów wynikających z ostrego uszkodzenia mięśni. Nawracające epizody rabdomiolizy, dodatni wywiad rodzinny, cechy przewlekłej miopatii powinny skłaniać do poszukiwania przyczyny wrodzonej.
Rhabdomyolysis is a serious, potentially life threatening condition resulting from acute muscle damage. The characteristic clinical features of rhabdomyolysis include myalgia, muscle weakness and dark colored urine. This syndrome is related to a high risk of complication, for example, acute kidney injury or disseminated intravascular coagulation. Serum creatinine kinase concentration is considered the biochemical gold standard for diagnosing rhabdomyolysis. Serial monitoring of renal function should be a standard procedure. Rhabdomyolysis is caused by a number of causes, more often acquired than genetically conditioned. Acquired causes include trauma, physical exercise, medication or toxic exposure. Rhabdomyolysis is a rare complication of statin therapy, it is more common in polytherapy with other lipid-lowering drugs. Inherited predisposition to massive muscle injury can occur with numerous diseases from heterogeneous group of neuromuscular or metabolic disorders. The most important ones include malignant hyperthermia, glycogen metabolism disorders, fatty acid beta-oxidation disorders or mitochondrial myopathies. Differential diagnosis should be based on clinical presentation, analysis of triggering factors and appropriate choice of laboratory tests. Recurrent episodes of rhabdomyolysis, positive family history or features of chronic myopathy should induce the search for an inherited cause. Intensive intravenous fluid infusions are widely used in treatment. The main goals of therapy are to remove the cause of muscle damage, prevention of kidney injury and treatment of electrolyte disturbances. In some cases renal replacement therapy may be required. Total mortality is about 8%.

Halitosis is a complaint that concerns a large part of the population. It is a very troublesome symptom independent of age, gender and race that often interferes with interpersonal relationships in terms of psychosocial interventions. The aim of this paper is to present the issue to general practitioners, the disease pathogenesis, its clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and combating the problem of troublesome bad breath, which can be met by doctors in their practice regardless of specialty. Since halitosis is a disorder of a complex multifactorial etiology, it requires an interdisciplinary approach for a collaborative and aggressive treatment, both general and local.

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, which are usually grouped together as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Despite many researches, the etiology is still unknown, but it is believed that IBD is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors that interact with the immunological system. Many people worldwide (around 4 million) suffer from a form IBD and the incidence of Crohn's disease is still increasing. Aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, immunomodulators, biologic medicines reduce the inflammation, relieve symptoms, prevent flare-ups, but new, more effective drugs with smaller amount of side effects are wanted and examined.

Between September 2008 and April 2011, 62 cases of BNP were diagnosed in dairy calves. Bleeding skin lesions were mostly pronounced in summer and early autumn. Severe thrombocytopenia was observed in all sick animals. All calves came from herds vaccinated against BVDV infection with PregSure BVD vaccine (Pfizer). Substitution of colostrum from dams of BNP positive calves with colostrum from dams from herds free of BNP was the only effective measure to avoid new cases in affected herds.

Opis:
This article is the first in a series of three installments representing a doctoral project carried out at the University of the Free State in South Africa. The aim of this article is to establish an apodictic ontic and epistemic foundation for the construction of an integral framework for sociological practice. To this end, manifest reality is meditated upon in a realist phenomenological manner, thus yielding an etiological framework aimed at reflecting reality in itself, and not as the object of a specific scientific paradigm. Situated against the backdrop of the ontological turn in the social sciences, the argument is developed that contemporary science represents an ill-founded attempt at empirically describing a reality that is fundamentally trans-empirical. It is posited that any scientific enterprise which is founded exclusively on an empirical analysis of “objective” reality can ultimately yield only partial truths. To remedy this situation, the role of intersubjectively constructed meaning-frameworks and subjectively constituted qualia of manifestation during the generation of reality are acknowledged, facilitating an account thereof that enlivens the positivistic “world-as-described” by integrating it with the hermeneutically navigable “world-as-agreed-upon” and the individually encountered/embodied “world-as-witnessed.” The resulting etiological framework facilitates a grasp of the higher order unity of these “worlds” by facilitating the emergence of an aperspectival mode of being that transcends the empirico-perspectival mental consciousness structure characteristic of modern and postmodern epistemologies. In so doing, a universally valid layer of knowledge is laid bare which can serve as a contextualizing point of reference for the continued perspectival exploration of particular conditioned aspects of reality.
