    After the Second World War communists took over the power in Poland. The main purpose of the ruling party was introducing the principles of Marxist philosophy. In the center of ideological fight was the Roman Catholic Church perceived as serious obstacle or even threat in achieving their goals. In the years 1980-1981, the Polish authorities again declared their will to normalize relations and to reactivate the Joint Commission of the Government and the Episcopate. The communists as the rulers counted on the help of the Church in calming social moods and normalizing the situation after the unrest and strikes that took place at that time. The talks however did not bring any significant effects. Only a few small matters were settled.

    In the first months of 1971 the Government of the Polish People’s Republic decided to start talks with the Holy See on the normalization of relations between the State and the Catholic Church. The intention of the Holy See was to achieve recognition of the legal personality of the Church in Poland. The only result achieved however was the will to continue negotiations in the future.Under the Protocol signed by the parties in July 1974, the communist authorities immediately appointed the head of their Team of representatives and began to reside in Rome. The decision to send a permanent representative of the Holy See to Warsaw was first made by Pope Paul VI in 1976 and upheld by John Paul I. After the pontificate began by John Paul II, the position of the Holy See in this matter was modified and as a consequence no delegate of the Pope was sent to the end of the seventies of the last century to Warsaw and no agreement was reached. At every stage of the negotiations that were carried without any representative of Polish Church. Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, as the Head of the Conference of the Episcopate of Poland, was kept informed about their course and he supported the negotiators by submitting systematically in writing the opinion of the Conference of the Polish Episcopate to the Pope Paul VI, to Pope John Paul II as well as and for the Archbishop Agostino Casaroli. All suggestions and remarks were very valuable and supportive in negotiations due to the fact that they were originated by Polish bishops who knew well the internal situation in the country as well as the way of proceedings of communist authorities.

    W 1918 r. po ponad 120 latach niewoli Polska powróciła na mapy Europy. Wraz z odradzaniem się państwa wielkie przemiany sięgnęły Kościoła prawosławnego w Polsce. Przed I wojną światową był on częścią Patriarchatu Moskiewskiego, który decydował o jego kadrach, statucie, życiu liturgicznym, obrzędowości, itp. Teraz cerkiew w Polsce została oderwana od rosyjskiej. Z jednej strony władze Rzeczypospolitej pragnęły jak najmocniej zerwać z przeszłością niewoli. Dążyły więc do kościelnej niezależności polskiego prawosławia. Z drugiej strony Rosja ogarnięta pożogą Rewolucji Październikowej zamknęła się w kręgu wewnętrznych problemów. Patriarchat zmuszony był walczyć o przetrwanie. Sprawy cerkwi w Polsce siłą rzeczy miały dla niego drugorzędne znaczenie. W kraju tymczasem brakowało biskupów i duchownych. Co gorsza powracający na rodzinną ziemię przedwojenni hierarchowie i kapłani posiadali rosyjskie obywatelstwo. Ukształtowani też byli w duchu rosyjskich szkół teologicznych, z których się wywodzili i w duchowości rosyjskiego Prawosławia. Nie sprzyjało to normalizacji stosunków państwo – cerkiew. Władze nieprzychylnie patrzyły na Kościół prawosławny widząc w nim relikt zaborów. Od hierarchów wymagano pełnej lojalności włącznie z podpisywaniem deklaracji lojalności. Społeczność kapłańską podzielono na uznawaną przez państwo i nieuznawaną. Ta druga nie mogła liczyć na objęcie etatowych placówek duszpasterskich, zatrudnienie jako katecheta w szkołach publicznych, czy też uzyskanie obywatelstwa (w każdej chwili mogli być – i bywali – wydaleni poza granice Ojczyzny). Wystarczyło tylko sprzeciwiać się polonizacji cerkwi, zwalczać neounię, czy też krytykować plany autokefalii Kościoła by znaleźć się w tej grupie kapłanów „drugiej kategorii”. Władze dążyły również do ograniczenia ilości czynnych placówek duszpasterskich. Czyniono to na trzy sposoby. Po pierwsze wielu dawnym parafiom nie przyznano prawa samodzielności degradując je do rangi filii nieetatowej (nawet jeśli posiadały kilka tysięcy wiernych). Po drugie od razu po zakończeniu wojny rozpoczęła się rewindykacja prawosławnego mienia. Jeśli w przeszłości jakieś prawosławne grunta lub świątynia, choć przez kilka dni należały do Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego lub unickiego, mogły teraz być odebrane czy to w ramach wyroku sadowego czy też samowolnej akcji nieprawosławnej społeczności. Cerkiew pozbawiono kilkuset świątyń i dziesiątków tysięcy hektarów ziemi uprawnej oraz lasów. Trzecim sposobem destabilizacji życia parafialnego były akcje burzenia świątyń. Propagowane, jako rozbiórka opuszczonych świątyń w bardzo złym stanie technicznym były barbarzyńskim, zaplanowanym programem zniszczenia cerkwi w Polsce. Wysadzano, palono, rozbierano profanując, bijąc i poniżając nielicznych obrońców domów bożych. Jednocześnie z tym „fizycznym niszczeniem” państwo prowadziło „wojnę prawną”. Przez długie lata posługiwało się carskim ustawodawstwem cerkiewnym pozwalającym mu penetrować wewnętrzne życie cerkwi. Konstytucja marcowa z 1921 r. potwierdziła uprzywilejowaną rolę Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego. Tymczasowe przepisy o stosunku rządu do Kościoła prawosławnego w Polsce, jako jednostronny akt rządowy nie uwzględniały specyfiki Prawosławia. Nie rozwiązywały też najważniejszych spraw. Episkopat coraz bardziej skłaniał się, wobec zaistniałej sytuacji politycznej (niezbyt przyjazne państwo i utrudniony kontakt z kanoniczną zwierzchnością w Moskwie), w stronę starań o uzyskanie statutu autokefalii z Konstantynopola, do którego należeliśmy do XVII w. Po wieloletnich zabiegach w Moskwie i Konstantynopolu ogłoszenie autokefalii nastąpiło w 1925 r. Niezależność sprzyjała reorganizacji i rozwojowi działalności edukacyjno – wydawniczej, normalizacji struktur w terenie, ujednoliceniu życia liturgiczno – obrzędowego, organizacji duszpasterstw specjalnych (w tym wojskowego ordynariatu), działalności młodzieżowej (bractwa cerkiewne), normalizacji zagadnień narodowościowych, itp. Oczywiście pozbawiała Kościół zewnętrznej opieki i patronatu. Zyski wydają się jednak dużo większe niż straty. Tych ostatnich było całkiem sporo. Państwo ograniczało rozwój prawosławnego monastycyzmu. Dążyło do narzucenia cerkwi nowego kalendarza (gregoriańskiego) i języka polskiego jako urzędowego i liturgicznego. Nie zaprzestało, a w 1938 r. nasiliło, proceder burzenia świątyń. Czteromilionowa prawosławna społeczność (11-15% obywateli) wielokrotnie zastanawiała się czym zasłużyła sobie na tak niesprawiedliwe traktowanie. Pokonała wszystkie te problemy, choć przyszło się jej złożyć daninę łez i krwi. Pamiętajmy, że wszystko to działo się w przededniu II wojny światowej. Rzeczpospolita zamiast jednoczyć się wewnętrznie wobec śmiertelnego zagrożenia prowadziła zgubną politykę szowinizmu, ksenofobii i nietolerancji.
    In 1918, after over 120 years of captivity, Poland appeared once again on the map of Europe. Great changes also affected the Orthodox Church in Poland at the time of the re-emergence of the state. Before the First World War, the Orthodox Church was a part of the Moscow Patriarchate, which made decisions about its personnel, statutes, liturgical life, rites, etc. The church in Poland now has been detached from the Russian Church. On the one hand, the Republic’s authorities wanted to sever itself from the captivity of the past as much as possible. They strived for ecclesiastical independence for Polish Orthodoxy. On the other hand, Russia was overcome by the horrors of the Russian Revolution and was therefore confined to the sphere of domestic problems. The Patriarch was forced to struggle to survive. For him, the church’s situation in Poland was inevitably of secondary importance. At the time, there was a lack of bishops and priests in Poland. What’s worse, the pre-war hierarchs and priests, who were returning to their homeland possessed Russian citizenship. They were also shaped by Russian spirit of theological schools, from which they graduated, and by Russian Orthodox spirituality. This was not favourable for normalizing church-state relations. The authorities regarded the Orthodox Church in an unfavourable way, as they saw it as a relic of the partitions. The hierarchs were required to be fully loyal and to sign a declaration of loyalty. The community of priests were divided into two groups: those who were recognized by the state and those who were not. The latter could not count on receiving full-time pastoral positions, employment as catechists in public schools or obtaining citizenship (at any time they could be, and in some cases were, deported from their homeland). It was enough to oppose the polonization of the church, to fight the neo-union or criticise the plans for an Autocephalous church to find oneself in the “second category” of priests. The authorities also strived to limit the number of operational places for pastoral care. This was done in three ways. Firstly, several former parishes were not granted the right to independence, thus degrading them to the ranks of dependant parishes (even if they were made up of several thousand faithful). Secondly, immediately after the ending of the war, the process of revindication of Orthodox property commenced. If, in the past, any Orthodox land or church, even it belonged to the Roman Catholic or Uniate Church for merely a couple days, could now be re-possessed either by court ruling or by arbitrary action on the part of the non-Orthodox community. The Orthodox church was deprived of several hundred church buildings, tens of thousands of hectares of cultivated land and forests. The third way of destabilizing parish life were campaigns to destroy churches. What was propagated as dismantling abandoned churches in very poor technical condition was in fact a barbarian and planed program of destroying the Orthodox church in Poland. These churches were exploded, burned and dismantled and the few who defended the temples were mocked, beaten and humiliated. Simultaneously with the “physical destruction”, the state also waged a “legal war.” For many years, the Tsar’s church legislation, which allowed the state to penetrate into the internal life of the church was applied. The March Constitution of 1921 reaffirmed the privileged role of the Roman Catholic Church. The Provisional Regulations Concerning the Government’s Relation to the Orthodox Church in Poland as a unilateral governmental act did not take the specific nature of Orthodoxy into consideration. It also failed to resolve the most important issues. The episcopate was more and more inclined, in the face of the existing political situation (a hostile state and difficulties in contacting the canonical leader in Moscow), to strive for obtaining autocephalous status from Constantinople, to which we belonged until the 17th century. After several years of intervention in Moscow and Constantinople, autocephaly was announced in 1925. Independence allowed for the reorganization and development of education and publishing, normalization of structures within the territory, standardization of liturgical and ceremonial life, organization of specific areas of pastoral care (including the military ordinariate), youth activities (church brotherhoods), normalization of issues of nationality, etc. This, of course, deprived the Church of external protection and patronage. The gains seem to be much greater than the losses. There was a great amount of the latter. The state limited the development of Orthodox monasticism. It strived to impose on the Church the new (Gregorian) calendar and Polish as the official and liturgical language. These efforts did not cease, and in 1938 they intensified, now taking the form of destroying churches. The Orthodox community, which was composed of four million people (11-15% of citizens), repeatedly wondered why they deserved such unfair treatment. The community overcame all of these problems, but only after paying a tribute of blood and tears. Let us remember that all of this took place just before the outbreak of the Second World War. The Republic, instead of uniting itself internally in the face of the deadly threat of war, chose to pursue a fatal policy of chauvinism, xenophobia and intolerance.

    In the Old Polish period many members of the chapter of the archcathedral in Gniezno became at various stages of their church career members of the episcopate. They are, among others, described on the pages of a fundamental compendium titled Prałaci i kanonicy katedry metropolitalnej gnieźnieńskiej (The Prelates and Canons of the Gniezno Metropolitan Cathedral) written by Jan Korytkowski (1824-1888), himself a clergyman (he died as a bishop-nominee). He pays much attention to such questions as where, when and through whose ministry a particular representative of the episcopate received his episcopal consecration. The author of the article analyzes the provided data and adds numerous supplementary  comments.

    The present article concentrates on the role of Archbishop Antoni Baraniak in the Polish Episcopate in the difficult period of the communist dictatorship. Despite numerous studies on the history of the Catholic Church in the People’s Republic of Poland, the steadfast bishop’s biography has not yet been written. The undertaken analysis is aimed at rectifying this lack of information on the activity of Polish bishops. The Metropolitan of Poznań became a recognized authority in the course of works on the forum of the Main Commission and the Plenary Conference of the Episcopate. He enjoyed the trust of other hierarchs, including Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, who regarded him as one of his most important collaborators, especially in the years 1957-1967 when he became the second important figure of the Polish Episcopate. For this reason, he was entrusted with the most delicate and difficult tasks, such as the preparation of the Statute of the Polish Episcopate Conference, or the chairmanship of the Commission for the clarification of charges against Bishop Czesław Kaczmarek.
    Artykuł opisuję rolę abp. Antoniego Baraniaka w Episkopacie Polski w okresie komunistycznej dyktatury. Mimo wielu prac dotyczących historii Kościoła katolickiego w PRL, ciągle brakuje pełnej biografii niezłomnego hierarchy. Podjęta w tym miejscu analiza ma wypełnić ten brak w zakresie jego aktywności wśród polskich biskupów. Metropolita poznański dał się poznać jako wybitna postać w pracach na forum Komisji Głównej oraz Konferencji Plenarnej Episkopatu. Cieszył się pełnym zaufaniem innych hierarchów i kard. Stefana Wyszyńskiego, którego był jednym z najważniejszych współpracowników, szczególnie w latach 1957-1967, gdy był osobistością numer dwa w polskim Episkopacie. Z tego względu otrzymywał najbardziej delikatne i trudne zadania, takie jak przygotowanie Statutu Konferencji Episkopatu Polski czy przewodniczenie komisji ds. wyjaśnienia zarzutów stawianych bp. Czesławowi Kaczmarkowi.

    The present article describes the role of Archbishop Antoni Baraniak in the Polish Episcopate in the last decade of the metropolitan’s life. It is a continuation of the analysis published in 2019 in “Seminare”. Despite the passage of many years since the death of the steadfast bishop, his full biography still has not been written. The paper is aimed at filling this gap in the record of Polish bishops’ activity in the years 1967-1977. The Metropolitan of Poznań became known as an outstanding figure in the works on the forum of the Commission / Main Council and the Episcopal Plenary Conference. He enjoyed the trust of other hierarchs, especially that of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, being one of his most important collaborators. Archbishop Baraniak shared with the “Primate of the Millennium” a similar vision of the Church’s activity in the realities of the communist dictatorship, as well as a decisive approach to the religious policy of the authorities of the PRL. This was particularly evident in the seventies, when both hierarchs managed to see through the deceptive declarations of Edward Gierek’s political party.
    Poniższy artykuł opisuje rolę abp. Antoniego Baraniaka w Episkopacie Polski w ostatniej dekadzie życia metropolity poznańskiego. Jest kontynuacją analizy opublikowanej w 2019 r. na łamach „Seminare”. Mimo upływu wielu lat od śmierci niezłomnego biskupa nie doczekał się on swojej pełnej biografii. Tekst ma wypełnić ten brak w zakresie aktywności wśród polskich biskupów w latach 1967-1977. Metropolita poznański dał się poznać jako wybitna postać w pracach na forum Komisji/Rady Głównej oraz Konferencji Plenarnej Episkopatu. Cieszył się pełnym zaufaniem innych hierarchów i kard. Stefana Wyszyńskiego, którego był jednym z najważniejszych współpracowników. Z Prymasem Tysiąclecia łączyła go wizja działalności Kościoła w realiach komunistycznej dyktatury oraz zdecydowane podejście do polityki wyznaniowej władz PRL. Było to szczególnie widoczne w latach siedemdziesiątych, gdy obaj hierarchowie nie dali się nabrać na złudne deklaracje ekipy partyjnej Edwarda Gierka.

    This article focuses on activities of Bishop Michał Klepacz in the specialised committees of the Episcopate of Poland. Already in 1947, the Łódź Bishop was appointed to the Committee for Theological Studies at Church Faculties and in Seminaries, later transformed into the Studies/Studies and Seminars Committee chaired by the bishop in 1959–1967. Since 1947, he had also worked in the School Committee. Two years later, he was appointed a member of the Committee for Negotiations with the Government representing the Church (since 1956, that Committee operated as the Joint Committee of the PRL Government and the Episcopate of Poland Representatives), which was to standardise and organise relations between the Church and the Communist authorities. As a part of works of that Committee, he was one of the authors of the agreement of April 14, 1950. His activities in that body ended in 1963, with a unilateral freezing of its functioning by the PRL government. Bishop Michał Klepacz also made a substantial contribution to the works of the Press Committee, of which he was a member in the first half of the 1950s, and of the Council Committee. It should be added here that his involvement into that last body was strongly influenced by the fact that he was one of the few dignitaries of the Polish Church participating in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council.

    Opis:
    Music is an intrinsic element of the liturgy of the Church. There is a num-ber of documents of the Holy See concerning music. The Episcopate of Poland also cares about the form of music in Polish churches, publishing its documents. They derive from teachings of the Church, but concern more local issues. They contain instructions on how the musical reality should be formed and clearly show the areas where changes are needed. Teachings of the Episcopate put stress on dignity and sancity of music that should sound during the liturgy. Among the multitude of music genres we should especially respect Gregorian chant as it best suits the liturgy's character, but other music styles are also welcome and ingra-ined in it. As to musical instruments, the pipe organ is the best suited one, it sho-uld however be noted that for liturgy, the manner of performing music is no less important than the choice of instruments. Music should suit the specific subject of the liturgy, the liturgical season, the celebration of the particular day, as well as the moment it is performed. This regards not only the repertoire, but also the manner it is performed. Music has a priority among all the arts, as it carries word. It is so deeply ingrained in liturgy that each of its participants performs music. From the person presiding over the liturgy, to every serving person, to the gathe-red faithful, everybody has own tasks and office, and much of it is musical office. The bishops enumerate it. Not only the celebrant and the serving persons sing, the faithful also express their participation by singing and acclamations, that is by musical elements. The teachings of the Episcopate cover in detail all elements of liturgy than can be sung. The bishops encourage to sing every part of the liturgy for which there are melodies. They provide criterions for choosing chants. They care for musical education of the performers and participants in liturgy. They also provide directions for further reflection and work on practical functioning of music in liturgy in Poland.
