Opis:
Organisms encrusting corals from a coral horizon encountered in a trench in the Middle Devonian (Givetian) Pokrzywianka Beds of the classic Grzegorzowice-Skały section in the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland, are described and analyzed in the context of their palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental background. These episkeletobionts form rather a low-diversity community, dominated by microconchid tubeworms, crinoids, and tabulate corals. The last group, however, is especially diverse at the family level, represented by auloporids, alveolitids, coenitids and favositids. These episkeletobionts are considered to have developed in a low-light, lower mesophotic palaeoeonvironment, as evidenced by the presence of platy, alveolitid tabulate coral in the deposits studied. This microconchid-crinoid-tabulate-coral community differs from other Givetian communities from the Holy Cross Mountains (Laskowa and Miłoszów), which also are considered to have developed in low-light habitats. The differences in taxonomic composition of episkeletobionts between these three localities most probably resulted from specific local conditions, related to bathymetry (light levels, nutrient levels), the specific nature of the hosts/substrates occupied, and also differences in larval dispersal patterns. This, in turn, shows that various encrusting communities may have inhabited seemingly similar, marine habitats within a given time interval and neighbouring areas, which may have serious implications for large-scale comparisons of biodiversity within a given palaeoenvironment.

In this work we studied bioerosion and encrustation on dead shells of the shallow benthic clam Venus antiqua from Patagonia Argentina with the aim of understanding biotic interactions (live/live interaction) and postmortem encrustation (live/dead interaction). In this regard, drill hole analysis and epibiont distribution in shells from modern death assemblages were performed. Additionally, we analyzed crushing traces in the shells of the drilling gastropod Trophon geversianus, which were caused by another predator. The analysis of drill hole placement and epibiont distribution on V. antiqua shells show drill holes (75%) and the epibiont Crepidula spp. (70.91%) more concentrated in the upper sector of the valve, which might be explained by the vertical position and a semi-infaunal mode of life in this clam. Nevertheless, the presence of drill holes in the lower sector of the valve indicates that clams spent part of the time reclining on the sediment. There is also evidence that clams with Crepidula spp. as commensals are less frequently attacked by drilling gastropods. Besides, a high percentage of articulated clams (30.97%) show signs of attack by drilling gastropods, but incomplete drill holes (7.67%) also suggest failed attempts, resulting in a minimum of 23.30% of successful predation. These incomplete drill holes may suggest failed attempts due to another predator attack upon the snails consuming the clams thus interrupting the feeding activity: more than 60% of marks of crushing in T. geversianus shells could have been produced by other predators, such as crabs. The postmortem encrustation on V. antiqua shells (35%) was mainly produced by calcareous polychaetes, preferably located on the inner side of the valve indicating that the empty shells of V. antiqua served as cryptic environment before they become exposed on the beach. Finally our data show that drilling frequency is very low in Pleistocene assemblages, suggesting changes in burial depth dynamics of this suspension feeder.

This contribution presents the record of an abundant assemblage of well-preserved, thallophytic noncalcified algae and of an epibiotic form that has been recognised as a putative graptolite from the upper Silurian (Ludlow, Gorstian–Ludfordian) of Podolia (western part of Ukraine). The sediments represent a shallow peritidal zone of the shelf. A new genus and species, Voronocladus dryganti, belonging to the Dasycladales Pascher, 1931, is established. Most of the specimens representing the algal thallus are overgrown by problematical epibiotic graptolites, described as Podoliagraptus algaeoides gen. et sp. nov. This phenomenon is explained as an epiphytic mode of life of the putative graptolite on algae, and is herein compared to recently known coexistences of algae with other organisms. The excellent state of preservation, and the abundance of studied Dasycladales algae and epibiotic problematics indicate that the investigated mudstone layer can be treated as a ‘Konservat Lagerstätte’ sensu Seilacher (1970).
