Opis:
This article represents the analysis of different aspects of the English verb such as: word building, degree of proximity, functional completeness and word building. This article presents the results of the analysis of the various types of the English ergative verbs, in particular: phrasal verbs, analytic constructions and minor ones. In the article the connections of the paradigmatic elements of the ergative field of the verbs and their syntagmatic features are investigated. Purpose. The purpose of this article is to establish the factors that affect the degree of functional closeness of the verbs in functional class and the completeness of their implementation inflectional paradigms, as well as inspection of the functional classification of the verbs and analyze text features of English verbs. The aim of our study is a more detailed study of the ergative verbs in such aspects as syntax and morphology. Methods. The methodology of this research is the comparative analysis of different linguists’ approaches to analyze the functional classes of English verbs, word building of their form, their degree of proximity and degree of functional completeness of implementation verbal paradigm. Distributive and functional analysis is used to research the degree of completeness and implementation of the verbal paradigms: the number of values morphemic structure, etymology and frequency of the verb usage. The research method is the analysis of the valence of the English ergative verbs semantics, distributive transformation and semantic-syntactic types of the analysis. Results. The significance of the functional verb classes’ establishment is the number of realized inflectional forms. The functional classes are represented as a result of the structural word creative verbal paradigms functioning patterns in the literature texts. The functional classes of the English verbs can be characterized by a certain structure. That includes three main components: a core, periphery and intermediate branch. Also, it is important to note that each functional class has a number of levels of the structure. These levels depend on the number of strong, medium and weak links between the verbs and it is called as functional degree of proximity. The functional proximity of the English verbs can be determined by the peculiarities of their functioning, such as the number of realized inflectional forms and its frequency. There are five main types of paradigms. The implementation of the interconnections between the elements within the field of the ergativeness in the English language takes place. These include the following: grammatical, lexical, semantic, nominative, and functional-semantic. Same features are characteristic of the depth ergativeness level of the languages in the ergative typology. These include the actants in the position of the non-transitive sentence subject and the actants of the transient sentence object. They have a patience character. This means that they have semantic-syntactic features of the objectivity and a carrier of the quality and condition.

Opis:
OE *durran ‘dare’ is a preterite-present verb and one of six such verbs whose various forms have survived into Modern English. The main feature of the members of the group is that their strong past tense acquired a present meaning, and thus a new weak past tense developed over time. An outline of other characteristic features of these verbs is included in section ‘0’ (introductory remarks), yet the aim of the present paper is to establish the distribution of the verb *durran in Middle English with regard to periods and regions, also considering differences in spelling. Also, the paper examines fixed expressions such as how dare you or I dare say. The Middle English data are derived from the Prose corpus of the Innsbruck computer archive of machine-readable English texts. Additional sources, like the Dictionary of Old English on CD-ROM, the electronic Middle English dictionary and the Oxford English dictionary online are also referred to.

Opis:
The main concern here is the cognitive analysis of motion events in translating from English (a satellite-framed language) to Spanish (a verb-framed language). Briefly presented is an overview of the theoretical background which forms the framework for the study, namely Talmy’s typology of lexicalization patterns and Slobin’s “thinking for speaking” hypothesis. The data sample of 88 motion events (143 with satellites) has been selected from J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and from its Spanish translation, considering the quantitative and qualitative criteria. It is here argued that typological differences between S-languages and V-languages lead to numerous problems in rendering the aspects of Path and Manner of Motion. Special attention is also given to the possible translation strategies of compensating for typological restrictions.

Opis:
The main objective of this paper is to juxtapose selected Polish motion verbs, which are either used as Determinate or as Indeterminate forms, and signal contrasts between Polish and English in terms of the type of presented Motion Event, i.e. the schematic Manner, and the schematic Path. The paper has a descriptive character, aiming to signal potential problems in translating into English Polish discourse with the same verb occurring in its Determinate and Indeterminate forms. It attempts to demonstrate possible alterations in the English versions regarding grammatical aspects, lexical aspects, and also the semantics of the Indeterminate verbs which are sometimes perfective, and the Determinate verbs which are sometimes imperfective, despite the satellite elements.

Arabic students frequently encounter errors while learning English as a second language (ESL). This study investigates prevalent interlingual and intralingual errors observed among Arabic learners of English. The authors posit that by addressing morphological, lexical, and semantic inaccuracies, English instructors can assist Arabic learners in cultivating a more comprehensive and nuanced proficiency in the English language, thereby enhancing their communicative abilities across various contexts. The instructional strategies explained in this paper offer valuable insights for ESL teachers and tertiary-level Arabic students aiming to mitigate or eliminate such errors. Additionally, the teaching recommendations presented in this paper serve as beneficial resources for experienced and novice instructors, facilitating the reduction of errors commonly encountered by Arabic students in their English language acquisition journey.

Opis:
English is commonly referred to as a “universal” language. Many people decide to study the language for a variety of reasons – to learn about a culture, to have a method of intercultural communication, to find a job, etc. In Poland specifically, students learn grammar and the theory of learning a language over the actual practice. As a result, common grammar mistakes occur throughout their learning process. This paper presents a list of these common grammar mistakes that English learners make. It also includes tips on how to improve one’s grammar and what to pay attention to.
O angielskim często się mówi, że jest językiem „uniwersalnym”. Wiele osób decyduje się studiować go z różnych przyczyn: by poznać kulturę krajów anglojęzycznych, zdobyć narzędzie do komunikacji międzykulturowej, znaleźć pracę itd. W Polsce, studenci poznają gramatykę oraz teorię uczenia się języka obcego równolegle z praktyczną nauką angielskiego. W rezultacie częste błędy gramatyczne towarzyszą im przez cały proces nauki. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia listę błędów gramatycznych popełnianych często przez osoby uczące się angielskiego oraz porady, jak poprawić swoją gramatykę i na co zwracać uwagę.
