Opis:
Aim. The paper presents partial results of research aimed at the development of foreign language reading comprehension using the specially developed intervention programme. Concept. The English Reading Comprehension Intervention Program has been developed within the research project Support for reading literacy in the mother tongue and foreign language. It consists of 10 intervention units and is based on 10 identified predictors, the conscious development of which contributes to students’ success in reading comprehension. Methodology. Assumptions presented in the paper are based on the cognitive theory of learning, identifying which cognitive processes precede the predictors with the greatest share of influence, and which higher cognitive processes follow them. Based on these scientific hypotheses and research results, we have determined the predictors positively influencing reading comprehension and worth intervening in the process of development of reading comprehension. Results and conclusions. In the paper, the English Reading Comprehension Intervention Program for B1 level of language proficiency is introduced, with both the content and methodology of its class application described. The predictors of divergent thinking and ambiguity tolerance are discussed in detail as the presented example of the intervention unit is focused on their development. Originality. While intervention programmes are not a new phenomenon, the recently developed reading comprehension intervention programmes for foreign languages are a valuable contribution to teaching foreign language reading comprehension in primary and secondary schools. They provide foreign language teachers with ready-made materials, which can be immediately used in their classes and will contribute to better learning results of their students.

Opis:
The proposed paper is the outcome of a research project dealing with a comparison of the culinary and medical recipes at various stages in their development. The main aim of the present study is to concentrate on the major text type features as found in the two types of the recipe. Our preliminary studies have shown that some of these features are common in only one type of instruction, being hardly noticeable in the other. The results will show the differences but also the degree of overlapping between the most prominent text type features of culinary and medical recipes produced in Middle and Early Modern English.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the digital material incorporated into Text-to-Speech system for students’ English spelling. The digital material was made on the basis of the Spelling Bee vocabulary list (approximately 300 words) issued by the selected school. 21 third graders from a private bilingual school in Taiwan were selected for this study. This study employed four data collection techniques, including questionnaire, pre-test and post-test, informal observation and interview, and semi-structured individual interviews. The research results showed that the use of digital material fostered the students’ English spelling ability and their self-directed learning.

Opis:
W artykule omówiono stosunek aforyzmów i innych małych form tekstowych na materiale literackim i folklorystycznym w języku białoruskim, rosyjskim, polskim i angielskim. Określono miejsce aforyzmów w ogólnych klasyfikacjach małych form tekstowych, wzajemnych relacji aforyzmów i powiedzeń literackich, przysłów, tekstów jednozdaniowych, fraz stereotypowych, narodowych odmian dzieł literackich i małych gatunków folklorystycznych. Aforyzmy są przeciwstawiane wszelkim innym małym formom tekstowym jako szczególny rodzaj jednostek frazowych w oparciu o ich dwie cechy obligatoryjne – uogólnienie treści i autonomię dyskursywną.
The article discusses aphorisms and other small text forms in literary and folklore material in Belarusian, Russian, Polish and English. The place of aphorisms in the general classifications of small text forms, the relationship of aphorisms and literary sayings, proverbs, one-phrase texts, clichéd phrases, national varieties of literary and folklore works of small genres is determined. Aphorisms are contrasted with all other small text forms as a special type of phrasal unit on the basis of two of their obligatory features – the generalization of meaning and discursive autonomy.
