The term ‘graveyard poetry’ or Graveyard School of Poetry is used in the history of literature to refer to a collection of English poems of the 18th century whose character is primarily meditative and refl exive. The graveyard poets chose intensely emotional lyric genres such as dramatised and full of strong emotions meditative monologue, elegy or last will. They allowed the authors to express deeply subjective and intimate feelings, which revealed the supressed and hidden in the social discourse unoffi cial aspect of their psyche. They led to poetry which is direct, personal, confessional, intimate and reaching out of the rigour of Neoclassical convention. The compositions refl ected on mortality and immortality, passing of time, fragility of human life, horror of death, interment, grave, ‘coffi n bed’ after death, symbolism of the dead, decomposing bodies and bleak cemetery night and silence. They were full of sorrow, lugubriousness, grievance, dispair and melancholy caused by irreparable loss of a close person who passed away. They asked dramatic questions about the sense of life and death, about the meaning of the symbolism of graves for the living and the postmortem ‘what’s next’. The graveyard poetry literary and artistically wise ennobled and canonised the motif of grave and cemetery, which changed into meaningful and symbolic scenery. The Graveyard School of Poetry might have appeared to be a reaction to modern and scientifi c conversion of the world and universe image and therefore might have seemed to be a regressive and nostalgic turn towards Middle Ages and Baroque. In fact, it was paving the way for the future as well as for the romantic, radical revaluation and changes in literature, especially through opening towards subjective, extreme emotions of an individual, striving for direct poetic form of expression and by virtue of concentrating on boundary existential refl ection. The history of literature features above others the names of two poets who were the fi rst to compose poems initiating the graveyard poetry movement as a collective historical-literary phenomenon and infl uencing the successors – a Scottish poet, Robert Blair, the author of The Grave and Edward Young, the author of The Complaint, or Night Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality.

We argue that the structure of Delille’s poetical vision resembles in some aspects the scheme of the 18th century English landscape garden and examine some of its characteristic elements such as: irregular design, a representation of time in space, imitation of nature, the use of landscape painting techniques, etc.

Much as the book has been in evidence among numerous critics, the present essay focuses exclusively on Yeats’s famous Per Amica Silentia Lunae (1918), seeking to investigate the impulses of faith and irony that underpin its construction. The book is discussed on four levels: as a prose poem, a treatise on poetry, an account of Yeats’s infatuation with Iseult Gonne and finally, as an elaboration of the theory of culture that Yeats pondered in his earlier critical and theoretical work. The readings overlap, as Yeats is shown to conceive of the life of the poet as a constant quest for self-reinvention that never gives up on the hope of its completion, at the same time remaining powerfully sceptical of the means to achieve that completion.

In the present article I intend to explore chosen images of nature in selected poetical works by William Blake, William Wordsworth, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Alfred Tennyson and Matthew Arnold, in order to trace significant shifts in their use of natural imagery. While in Romantic poetry, in general, images from nature are used to portray spiritual experience of finding comfort and sustenance in communing with nature, or, alternatively, a sense of being overwhelmed in the face of an omnipotent power, Victorian poems register deep uneasiness and a fear of nature, which has nothing to do with the experience of the sublime. This shift can be attributed, at least in part, to ground-breaking scientific discoveries and overwhelming technological progress in Victorian England, which resulted in confusion and disquiet as far as basic existential issues (the existence of God, the relation between God and man, the origin of the universe) were concerned.

This article discusses, in particular, two poems by Paul Muldoon, included in his latest collection entitled One Thousand Things Worth Knowing (2015) – Paul Muldoon: Pompeii and Cuba (2). In the course of analysis, some dominating motifs within Muldoon’s literature are indicated, together with the methods he uses to incorporate them into his various poems and narrative poetry. In consequence, the key aspects of his poetry are emphasised – deliberations upon identity and autobiography, reflections on the place of the poem in the world and the poet’s responsibility towards the society he originates from.
W niniejszym artykule omówione są w szczególności dwa wiersze Paula Muldoona z jego najnowszego tomu One Thousand Things Worth Knowing (2015): Paul Muldoon: Pompeje i Kuba(2). W trakcie analizy wskazane zostają dominujące motywy twórczości poety oraz sposoby, w jakie są one przepracowywane w różnych wierszach i poematach. W efekcie zostają uwypuklone kluczowe aspekty jego poezji – rozważania nad pojęciami tożsamości i autobiografii, namysł nad miejscem wiersza w świecie oraz nad odpowiedzialnością poety względem społeczności, z której się wywodzi.

Opis:
Ideologies of kingship in Anglo-Saxon England, whether theorised from ecclesiastical perspectives or perpetuated by the oral/literary practices of Old English vernacular poets, were conducive to the promulgation of Christianity among the aristocratic military classes. This article reads Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum and Cynewulf’s Elene in an attempt to locate these works in the political and cultural landscape of conversion in early Anglo-Saxon England, on the one hand, and Viking invasion and settlement of the tenth and eleventh century, on the other. While earlier criticism has looked to biblical literary models in order to elucidate Bede’s and Cynewulf’s portrayals of Edwin and Constantine, the present article argues that the portrayal of military kings therein can be better understood in the context of the secular ethos of kingship and warfare argued by ecclesiastical writers, whose ideas emanated from a shared ideological framework.

Opis:
We present a finite-state technology (FST) based system capable of performing metrical scansion of verse written in English. Scansion is the traditional task of analyzing the lines of a poem, marking the stressed and non-stressed elements and dividing the line into metrical feet. The system’s workflow is composed of several subtasks designer around finite-state machines that analyze verse by performing tokenization, part-of-speech tagging, stress placement, and stress-pattern prediction for unknown words. The scanner also classifies poems according to the predominant type of metrical foot found. We present a brief evaluation of the system using a gold standard corpus of humanscanned verse, on which a per-syllable accuracy of 86.78% is achieved. The program uses open-source components and is released under the GNU GPL license.

Przyjaźń Mallarmégo i Whistlera jest okazją do przypomnienia kilku tekstów poety poświęconych malarzowi, a zwłaszcza przekładu odczytu Whistlera, Ten O’Clock (1885), w którym autor nowatorskich rozwiązań w malarstwie (tonalizm) zawarł swoją koncepcję sztuki. Analiza tego tekstu pozwala na nowo przemyśleć ciągle aktualny problem miejsca i znaczenia sztuki w społeczeństwie oraz stwierdzić pokrewieństwo obu artystów poszukujących nowych form wyrazu na przekór konwencjom i przyzwyczajeniom.
The friendship shared by Mallarmé and Whistler is the point of departure for recalling several texts the poet devoted to the painter, especially the translation of Whistler’s lecture, Ten O’Clock (1885), in which the innovator of key solutions in painting (tonalism) described his understanding of art. The analysis of this text permits a rethinking of the ever-topical problem of place and the significance of art in society while asserting the affinity of the two artists of seeking new form of expression, defiant of convention and habit.

The Dream of the Rood constitutes one of the most intriguing products of Old English literature, both in terms of its highly imaginative, heroicised depiction of Christ and the Cross and on account of its numerous Christian and pre-Christian intersec- tions. One of the most arresting issues in it, however, particularly as regards the poem’s cultural background, is its mention of a sorhleoð (l. 67), the ‘sorrow-song’, or ‘dirge’ that the disciples begin to sing once they have placed the body of the Saviour in the sepulchre. Given that there is no mention of any songs being chanted at the time of Christ’s burial in the canonical Gospels, it seems rational to suggest that the anonymous poet must have supplied this ‘missing’ information on the basis of his own, perhaps somewhat antiquarian, knowledge of the burial customs in Anglo-Saxon England.

The system of propaganda employed by the competing political groups in early eight- eenth century England embraced the popular literary circles in order to gain their support, a process which was reflected in the prolific and politically inclined literary output of the period. One of the lesser known members of these circles was the writer and physi- cian Joseph Browne. Little information concerning Browne is available, something which perhaps can be attributed to the relatively scant attention paid to his person. One critic, Howard Weinbrot, in his study on Samuel Johnson, acknowledged Browne as the author of the poem “The Gothick Hero” (so far only accredited to Browne) and associated his political views with support for the Hanoverian dynasty that ascended the British throne in 1714. However, the works Browne actually authored, as well as those attributed to him, contradict such a statement. In fact, his literary output, journalism, literary and political circles as well as his posthumous opinion reflected in nineteenth century works and com- ments on his literary activity prove Browne’s anti-Harleyite, anti-Whig and therefore anti- Hanoverian views. This article attempts to draw a sketch of Joseph Browne, confirming the constancy of his political views, and contributes to the discussion on the authorship of a number of key texts hitherto only attributed to him.

In Cynewulf’s Juliana, Juliana’s suitor Heliseus, called “the guardian of treasure,” represents secular material culture, in which women are weakened by the male control of materiality. The material culture of the heroic world reproduces the masculine body politic, reducing women to objects of exchange in contractual relationships between men. The present paper makes a case that from the poem emerges a contrast between a perception of materially constituted masculinity, aligning manhood with wealth and status, and a more inclusive spiritual manhood, available to both sexes. In relation to this Juliana achieves spiritual manhood as a miles Christi exampling how feminine holiness empowers women. Consequently Juliana’s emasculation of the devil becomes a challenge to the secular patriarchal order in which they are the currency of exchange.

This páper attempts to interrelate culture (as a set of values produced and received by a specific community, including its artistic and literary production) and language/speechculture/cultiva on. Its point of departure is the classic hierarchy of styles, the differentiation between high style (which is associated with cultivated, and in Czech, exclusively standardlanguage expression), middle and low style. Low style is characterized by the use of non-standard. slang and expressive means and vulgarisms, and currently extends into Czechliteratuře; the style characteristics o f which, in addition to the non-standard means listed above, are contributed to by a significant amount of English loanwords, trendy words and phi ases (often from the media and advertising spheres). The use of all means of low style by the younger generation o f Czech authors is motivated by cnrical attitudes towards thecontemporary consumption-oriented society. This is documented in the páper through examples irom two playwrights (David Drábek, Petr Kolečko) and two poets (Karel Škrabal, JanTesnohlídek, Jr.). The critical orientation of the authors is directed toward the lifestyle of the society - it is, of course, a question, how to evaluate their work from the perspective of languageculture/cultivation.

The heroic economy of treasure subtends both the treasure plundered from the temple in Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar and the political structure of Babylon in the Old English Daniel. The golden idol that Nebuchadnezzar erects is a sign of the worldly glory and wealth that generates the flow of goods in the heroic economy of exchange of honour. The aim of the paper is to argue that the Daniel poet makes a contrast between the secular flow of treasure, at the foundation of Nebuchadnezzar’s power, and the divine economy of grace, at the centre of the covenant between the Hebrews and God.

Twórczość Grigorija Krużkowa jest ze wszech miar godna opisu i popularyzacji. To ceniony i nagradzany rosyjski tłumacz poezji anglojęzycznej, teoretyk przekładu, profesor w Katedrze Teorii i Praktyki Przekładu Rosyjskiego Państwowego Uniwersytetu Humanistycznego w Moskwie. Jest m.in. autorem obszernej antologii przekładów 115 angielskich, irlandzkich i amerykańskich poetów oraz wyboru angielskich i irlandzkich wierszy i bajek. W 2015 roku otrzymał tytuł doktora honoris causa Trinity College w Dublinie. Widzi on pracę tłumacza jako twórczość, która rodząc się z miłości i jedności duchowej z autorem oryginału, może zapewnić temu ostatniemu nieśmiertelność w innych językach. Do tego właśnie nawiązują wyraźnie tytuły jego esejów. Co ciekawe, na polskim gruncie analogiczne wnioski formułuje z wielkim przekonaniem Wiesław Myśliwski, podkreślając, że tłumacz musi stworzyć (nie odtworzyć) dzieło na nowo we własnym języku.
The work of Grigory Kruzhkov is by all means worth describing and popularizing. He is a respected and awarded Russian translator of English-language poetry, translation theorist, professor at the Department of Russian Translation Theory and Practice of the Russian State University for the Humanities. He is, among others, the author of an extensive anthology of translations of 115 English, Irish and American poets and a selection of English and Irish poems and fairy tales. In 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Trinity College in Dublin. He sees the translator’s work as creativity which – born out of love and spiritual unity with the author of the original – can grant the latter immortality in other languages. This is what the titles of his essays clearly allude to. Interestingly, in Poland, similar conclusions are formulated with great conviction by Wiesław Myśliwski, stressing that the translator must create (not recreate) the work in his own language.

Józef Birkenmajer (1897–1939) was literary scholar and translator from classical and modern languages. He formulated the concept of ‘co-creative translation’, which assumes that the translator and the author of the original text enjoy the same status of creators. Although he translated a host of English novels, what he liked most was highly rhythmic verse, a preference not hard to detect in the list of his publications. His translations of Rudyard Kipling belong to the classics of the genre. By giving full attention to the poems and rhyming couples in Kipling's stories, Birkenmajer pioneered the notion of integral translation. His habit of lacing his journalism and other forms of writing with memorable verses from Kipling's books led many Polish readers to see Kipling primarily as a poet. Birkenmajer was also a translator of the poems and fiction of Edgar Allan Poe, on whose ‘Raven’ he worked in late 1937/early 1938 (it was eventually published in April 1938). While his experiments with obsolete vocabulary and dialect words were on the whole unsuccessful, many of his translations continue to spellbind new generations of readers.
