    The issues presented in the article concern English loanwords and their role in the process of shaping a specific variety of the language which is characteristic of the subculture of Polish graffiti writers. The article describes various forms, styles and techniques by means of which young people signal their presence and express their thoughts and feelings. The paper is, first of all, an analysis of the linguistic component and an attempt of classifying English lexical units which are borrowed and most frequently used in the conversations of Polish graffiti writers. This study also concentrates on the categorization of the linguistic content which is adopted from the English language to various forms of Polish graffiti writings. The article presents the results of the survey which was conducted at the turn of April and May 2006. The obtained results suggest the widespread use of English words in the daily talk of Polish graffiti writers, the evidence of which comes from the quoted expressions and utterances that are applied by artists in their environment and their description of the so called "crime work". The article in the final part also enumerates the main factors which are believed to have a significant impact on such frequent use of English words among Polish graffiti writers.

    Opis:
    The following article primarily deals with the notion of lexical borrowing. It particularly emphasizes the process of adopting English loanwords by Polish teenagers who in this way reflect their views, beliefs and feelings as well as accentuate their sense of belonging and their presence in the society. Apart from encapsulating opinions and observations of scholars on this subject, the article provides an extensive amount of empirical data which comes from the survey conducted among young Poles in March 2007. This data is presented by the author with the aim of issuing a list of English loanwords commonly adopted by Polish teenagers for whom these words function as an important part of their daily communication. The use of these items is exemplified in the article by various sentences which were quoted by teenagers participating in the research. The sentences in fact illustrate how foreign units are incorporated to the Polish system and in what social contexts they are applied by the youth. An analysis of the data is also carried out here to assist the author in classifying English loanwords into certain semantic fields and in distinguishing and comparing the codes developed by boys and girls at the gymnasium and secondary school level. The article in the final part enumerates the reasons for adopting English words teenagers and discusses the most influential channels by means of which the transmission of lexical borrowings takes place.

    The sociolinguistic context of prolonged language contact in contemporary Kenya should lead to a certain amount of influence of the languages on one another, e.g. through loanwords. The main aim of the present paper was to examine English in Kenya to show what kind of words are borrowed from African languages and their analysis within the framework of the borrowing theories formulated in Tappolet (1913–16), Haugen (1950), Weinreich (1953), Dardano – Trifone (1995), Hock – Joseph (1996), Krefeld (1999) and McColl-Millar (2007).     The paper examines verbs and verbal expressions for ‘die’ employed in Middle English chronicles. As one of the aims is to find out to what extent the distribution of euphemistic and non-euphemistic verbs and verbal expressions denoting this sense was determined stylistically, both prose and verse works are analyzed, i.e. The Peterborough chronicle 1070–1154, The Brut, or the chronicles of England, Layamon’s Brut, and The anonymous short English metrical chronicle.     W artykule podjęto próbę oceny występujących w polskiej współczesnej prasie kobiecej angielskich dubletów leksykalnych przez pryzmat kryteriów oceny innowacji językowych (kryterium wystarczalności, ekonomiczności języka oraz estetyczne). Analiza wyodrębnionych anglicyzmów pozwoliła na konstatację, iż większość tychże dubletów to słownictwo zbędne w leksykalnym zasobie polszczyzny. Ekspansywna amerykanizacja kultury polskiej oraz języka polskiego przyczynia się jednak do coraz większej frekwencji owych dubletów w tekstach prasowych, choć, zważywszy na ich częstą niejasność znaczeniową oraz zakłócenia komunikacyjne, których są przyczyną, należy stwierdzić, że użycie tego typu elementów językowych powinno zostać w znacznym stopniu ograniczone.
    Article attempts to assess lexical doublets occurring in Polish contemporary feminine press, through the prism of criteria of evaluation of linguistic innovations (criterion of sufficiency language, economy language and aesthetic). Analysis of these anglicisms allowed the statement that the majority of doublets is unnecessary vocabulary in Polish lexical resource. Expansive Americanization of Polish culture and Polish language, however, contribute to the increasing frequency of these doublets in press, though, given their frequent lack of clarity of meaning and communication disturbances, which are the cause, it is clear that the use of this type of language elements should be substantially limited.

    The article deals with linguistic heterogeneity in commercial advertisements addressed to the Czech-speaking majority audience in the Czech Republic. Analyzing examples predominantly from the Czech press and television advertisements, the author shows, among others, which foreign languages are used, how elements of foreign languages are incorporated into the Czech texts and what their functions are. The most frequent foreign language used here is English, followed (perhaps surprisingly) by Italian, which is associated with advertisements for culinary products. For most of the advertisements analyzed, recipients can do without any profound knowledge of the foreign language being used, and in fact, often no knowledge of it is necessary to understand them. The most important function of the foreign language elements or even some longer texts in the advertisements is to index associated stereotypes. Foreign languages point to foreign countries, nations, cultures and their supposed qualities, e.g. German in advertisements on cars produced by German manufactures refers to the tradition of German engineers and evokes concepts such as exactness or reliability. Even in those cases where some knowledge of the given foreign language is necessary to understand the advertisement, the indexical function of this language is important, but in a different manner: it points to the addressee as to an educated person, a citizen of the world, and the like.

    W dzisiejszych czasach panda wielka stała się nieformalnym symbolem Chin, niemal tak samo popularnym jak wizerunek smoka, mitycznego stworzenia będącego heraldycznym zwierzęciem Chin aż po rok 1928. Z dzisiejszą popularnością pandy zaskakująco kontrastuje niemal całkowita nieobecność tego zwierzęcia w wyobrażeniach dawniejszych epok. Lokalna nazwa pandy bai xiong „biały niedźwiedź” została po raz pierwszy zapisana przez O. Armanda Davida, odkrywcę tego gatunku dla nauki w 1869 r., pierwsze wyobrażenie pandy znajduje się we francuskiej pracy zoologicznej z 1874 r., a pierwsze symboliczne wykorzystanie pandy jako logo jest zasługą amerykańskich lotników stacjonujących w Kunmingu (Yunnan) w 1941 r. Jeśli dodamy do tego, że obecna chińska nazwa tego zwierzęcia xiongmao jest kalką z języka angielskiego bear cat i powstała na początku XX wieku, że panda wielka stała się przedmiotem tradycyjnego chińskiego malarstwa w latach 50. XX wieku, a rozpowszechnienie motywu pandy w literaturze chińskiej sięga 1983 r., stajemy przed trudnym do wytłumaczenia faktem nieznajomości pandy w literaturze i sztuce starożytnych Chin. Badacze chińscy zakładają, że panda wielka znana była pod innymi nazwami w dawnych Chinach. Hu Jinchu wylicza 25 takich nazw, jednak słowacki badacz Stanislav Vavrovský dowodzi, że tylko pod kilkoma z nich, i to regionalnie w Syczuanie, może się rzeczywiście kryć panda, choć nie ma na to jednoznacznych, rozstrzygających dowodów. Autorzy tego artykułu uważają, że panda wielka była znana w starożytnych Chinach, nie była jednak wyodrębniana jako osobny gatunek, lecz po prostu uznawana za niedźwiedzia xiong. Przedstawiają znaczenie niedźwiedzi w mitycznych opowieściach o genezie chińskiej cywilizacji, archeologiczne znaleziska szczątków niedźwiedzi (w tym i pand) w grobowcach z neolitu i epoki brązu oraz wyobrażenia niedźwiedzi w starożytnej sztuce do epoki Han włącznie. Omawiają również dwa podstawowe gatunki niedźwiedzi zamieszkujące Chiny: czarnego himalajskiego i jasnego niedźwiedzia brunatnego, zwanego niekiedy białym. Zwracają uwagę, że rozpowszechniony dziś wzorzec czarno-białej pandy wynika z faktu, że taką właśnie pandę po raz pierwszy poznał europejski badacz o. David i to właśnie ten podgatunek z gór zachodniego Syczuanu, stał się normatywnym dla pandy wielkiej. Tymczasem w starożytności zasięg występowania pandy wielkiej był o wiele większy niż dzisiejsze tereny refugialne. Można też założyć, że Chińczycy o wiele wcześniej niż pandy z Syczuanu mieli okazję poznać pandy z gór Qinling, położonych w pobliżu dawnej stolicy Xi’an. Ten podgatunek pandy (Ailuropoda melanoleuca qinlingensis), dziś znacznie rzadszy od syczuańskiego i uznawany za nienormatywny, charakteryzuje się odmiennym ubarwieniem jasno- i ciemnobrunatnym, co sprawia, że mógł on być uznany za jeden typ zwierzęcia z niedźwiedziem brunatnym. Dlatego też w starożytnej sztuce i literaturze chińskiej panda wielka mogła być przedstawiana po prostu jako niedźwiedź, a jeśli dochodziło do jakiejś dalszej specyfikacji, to niedźwiedź nie czarny, czyli nie himalajski.
    In modern times giant panda becomes an informal symbol of China, almost as popular as images of dragon, a mythical creature and heraldic animal of China till 1928. There is an astonishing contrast between today’s popularity of panda and an almost total lack of images and mentions of this animal in ancient times. Bai xiong ‘white bear,’ a local Chinese name for giant panda was registered for the first time only in 1869, by Father Armand David, who discovered giant pandas for the Europeans, the first image of panda was printed in a French zoological book in 1874, the first logo with an image of panda was created by pilots from the American Volunteer Group in Kunming (Yunnan) in 1941. If we add to this that the word xiongmao, a modern Chinese name for giant panda, is a phraseological calque from English bear cat created at the beginning of the 20th century, that panda became subject of the traditional Chinese painting in the mid of the 20th century and the literary motif of panda gained ground only after success of a popular song in 1983, we are faced with the problem of explaining, why giant panda was unknown to ancient Chinese art and literature. Some Chinese scholars assume that panda was known by other names in ancient China. Hu Jinchu enumerates a list of 25 such names, however Slovak sinologist Stanislav Vavrovský proves, that only some of them may actually mean giant panda, although the unambiguous and decisive arguments are lacking. The authors of this paper assume that giant panda was known in ancient China, however it was not differentiated as a separate species but was regarded simply as a bear (xiong). The authors present the role of bears in the mythical stories about the origin of Chinese civilization, the archaeological findings of bear bones in neolithic and bronze age tombs, as well as the images of bears in ancient Chinese art till the end of the Han dynasty. They talk through two common bear species in China: Asian black bear and brown bear, whose some subspecies are sometimes called white. The authors take notice of the fact that the known contemporary image of giant panda as a black-and-white animal is due to the discovery of the black-and-white Sichuan subspecies of this animal by Father Davis what follows that the first specimen known to Europeans became normative subspecies. However in ancient times the giant panda habitat was much more than modern refugial areas mostly in Western Sichuan mountains. The authors assume that ancient Chinese had an opportunity to meet with other pandas, e.g. from Qinling mountains, near Xi’an, a former capitol of China, than with the normative in our times subspecies of giant panda from Sichuan. The Qinling panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca qinlingensis) is very rare in our times and having a dark brown and light brown pattern instead of „typical” black and white seems to be atypical. In ancient times because of this brownish pattern Qinling panda could not be discerned from the common brown bear. The authors assume that whenever there are images and mentions of bear in ancient Chinese art and literature, we cannot automatically exclude giant pandas.

    The article focuses on the problem of orthographic and graphic variants of English loanwords in modern Russian. The empirical material was excerpted from normative dictionaries and Russian glossy magazines. The main purpose of the studies was to define the reasons for different notation of anglicisms, to illustrate the types of orthographic and graphic variants, and also to indicate the most important issues of loanword codification in normative practice. Variation in writing is a dynamic phenomenon in Russian (ortho) graphy that requires lexicographical description as there are no separate rules of notation for loanwords.

    This páper attempts to interrelate culture (as a set of values produced and received by a specific community, including its artistic and literary production) and language/speechculture/cultiva on. Its point of departure is the classic hierarchy of styles, the differentiation between high style (which is associated with cultivated, and in Czech, exclusively standardlanguage expression), middle and low style. Low style is characterized by the use of non-standard. slang and expressive means and vulgarisms, and currently extends into Czechliteratuře; the style characteristics o f which, in addition to the non-standard means listed above, are contributed to by a significant amount of English loanwords, trendy words and phi ases (often from the media and advertising spheres). The use of all means of low style by the younger generation o f Czech authors is motivated by cnrical attitudes towards thecontemporary consumption-oriented society. This is documented in the páper through examples irom two playwrights (David Drábek, Petr Kolečko) and two poets (Karel Škrabal, JanTesnohlídek, Jr.). The critical orientation of the authors is directed toward the lifestyle of the society - it is, of course, a question, how to evaluate their work from the perspective of languageculture/cultivation.

    Wprowadzenie. Wychowywanie młodzieży w dobie kryzysu wychowania oraz kryzysu rodziny wymaga poszukiwania nowych możliwości wywierania wpływu na rozwój młodego pokolenia. W artykule zaproponowano ukrytą formę kształtowania młodzieży, możliwą do zaaplikowania w szczególności podczas zajęć z języka obcego. Cel. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest nakreślenie możliwości wypływających z nauczania języka obcego w kontekście wypracowywania kompetencji społecznych młodzieży oraz – niezauważonych jak dotychczas w polskiej dydaktyce języków obcych – kompetencji moralno-duchowych. Cel ten finalnie ukierunkowany jest na wsparcie rodziców w wychowywaniu młodego pokolenia. Materiały i metody. W pracy wykorzystano metodę analizy literatury przedmiotu, metodę wnioskowania logicznego oraz metodę heurystyczną. Wyniki. Umiejętna selekcja zarówno metod i form pracy z uczniami, jak i materiałów dydaktycznych przyczynia się do kształtowania wychowawczego młodzieży. Stopień w jakim zajęcia mogą pomóc adolescentom, a zarazem ich rodzinom, zależy ponadto od pomysłowości, otwartości, kreatywności, zaangażowania oraz potencjału samego nauczyciela. Przygotowując się do zajęć każdy nauczyciel powinien zastanowić się nie tylko nad sposobem przekazania wiedzy, ale i nad dobraniem takich aktywności, które dodatkowo rozwinęłyby w uczniach umiejętności społeczne czy wartości moralno-duchowe. Pełnienie przez niego funkcji wychowawczej nie może być czystą fikcją, jako że jest to szczególne zadanie, przez które może on znacząco pomóc innej komórce społecznej, tj. rodzinie, która tak bardzo pomocy potrzebuje.
    Introduction. The issue of bringing up youth in the era of both upbringing and family crises implies the necessity of discovering new possibilities for exerting the influence on the development of the young generation. In the article the hidden form of developing young persons is put forward, and is simultaneously available for being applied especially during the foreign language classes. Aim. The aim of this article consists in outlining the possibilities arising from foreign language teaching in the light of evolving the social competencies of young people, as well as their moral and spiritual competencies, which have not been hitherto highlighted in the Polish foreign language didactics. This aim is ultimately directed at providing the support for parents in raising the younger generation. Methods. The following methods have been made use of as part of this work: the analysis of the subject literature, the method of logical reasoning and the heuristic method. Results. The skilful selection of methods and forms of work with students as well as that of the teaching materials contributes to educational formation of the youth. The extent to which the lessons may provide help to adolescents and, at the same time, to their families, is also made conditional upon ingenuity, openness, creativity, engagement and the potential of the teacher himself. In the course of preparation of the lessons, not only should every teacher ponder the way of imparting the knowledge, but also about choosing such activities that could additionally develop the social skills and the moral and spiritual values of students. The performance of an educational function cannot be reflected by a pure fiction after all, as it is a special task through which the teacher may substantially support another social cell, i.e., the family being so deeply in need of help nowadays.

    The article deals with the influence of words of African origin on the formation of American English [AE] word stock. It provides new interpretation of Africanisms and shows the significance of this part of vocabulary in determining the characteristics of the American culture. The investigation is based on the existing sources (mainly lexicographic works) and is aimed at their new structural and functional analysis. As a result of the research, it became clear that most of the words of African origin were introduced to English spoken in America in the 17th century and some in the 18th and 19th centuries. The number of words and expressions from African languages that were introduced was closely related to African Americans’ way of living, their spiritual believes, rituals and attitudes and various objects used by them such as weapons. The word stock of the English language was enriched due to the assimilation of loanwords from languages of Africans living in America. A significant contribution to AE is the great amount of words naming animals, fruit, foodstuff, names of states, rivers and lakes, cities and towns.

    Opis:
    The impact of the Polish language on the English lexical fabric, although unimpressive, is worth noticing. However, thus far it has not been a source of interest of many scholars. The present paper aims at discussing Polish loanwords that have found their way into the English language; this is done by means of collecting alleged loanwords from an array of sources (dictionaries, subject literature, and the Internet) which are later verified against, inter alia, such etymological dictionaries as the Oxford English Dictionary. Next, in order to assess their scale of use, selected items are checked in a number of corpora available online. The research concludes that there are 33 direct borrowings from the Polish language (belonging to 8 semantic categories) present in English, and nearly half of them are yet unattested in the OED.
