Opis:
Energy harvesting consists in the processing and storage of energy which is normally dissipated to the ambient environment. This study presents two solutions using two methods of energy generation: conversion of solar energy into electricity on the road surface and energy recovery from road surface vibrations and displacements. The description of configuration of testing stand dedicated for road surface vibrations energy harvesting has been also included. Described testing stand will make it possible to verify the possibility of application of piezoelectric transducers in road pavement in terms of occurrence of damages and the value of generated energy.

Opis:
A simple magneto-piezoelectric system excited by random forces modelled with a double well potential is considered. System responses for different realizations of noise with uniform and Gaussian distributions are compared. The results show negligible differences in the regions of small and high noise intensity. A more noticeable difference can be seen in the intermediate region of noise just below the transition from isolated single well oscillations to coupled double wells oscillations. Variations in the mechanical displacement in this transition region indicate that the transition between these types of behaviour is broader for a uniform noise excitation. Consequently, the system excited with Gaussian noise tends more clearly to one of the different solutions (i.e. motion in a single well or in both wells) while the uniform noise case demonstrates intermittency with multiple solutions.
Wyniki przedstawiają nieznaczne różnice w obszarach niskiej i wysokiej intensywności szumu. Bardziej zauważalną różnicę można dostrzec w obszarze pośrednim szumu, tuż poniżej przejścia z oscylacji w pojedynczej studni potencjału do oscylacji w dwóch sprzężonych studniach.

Opis:
A method to extract energy from an excitation which is stochastic in nature is presented. The experimental rig comprises a pendulum, and a vertical excitation is provided by a solenoid. The control input assumed in the form of a direct current motor, and another motor, used in reverse, acts as a generator. The stochastic excitation has been achieved by varying the time interval between switching the RLC circuit on and off according to a random distribution. Such non-linear vertical excitations act on an oscillatory system from which a pendulum is pivoted. The Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum has been chosen as the random distribution while an inverse transform technique has been used for generation of the random excitation signal in LabVIEW environment. Moreover, a bang-bang control algorithm has been implemented to facilitate rotational motion of the pendulum. Experimental observations have been made for various noise levels of vertical excitations, and their implication on energy generation has been discussed. A positive amount of energy has been extracted for a minimal amount of the control input.

The dynamic model of a linear energy harvester excited by a non-ideal power source is coupled to a controller to maximum vibration adjustment. Numerical analysis is taken to evaluate the energy harvested keeping the vibration optimized for the maximum interaction to the energy source using linear matrix inequalities for control driven. The dimensionless power output, actuation power and net output power is determined. As a result, it is possible to verify that the total energy harvested via exogenous vibration using the proposed controller is increased up to 65 times when in comparison to the open loop system.

Recent demand for powering small sensors for wireless health monitoring triggered activities in the field of small size efficient energy harvesting devices. We examine energy harvesting in an aluminium beam with a piezoceramic patch subjected to kinematic harmonic excitation and impacts. Due to a mechanical stopper applied, inducing a hardening effect in the spring characteristic of the beam resonator, we observed a broader frequency range for the fairly large power output. Impact nonlinearities caused sensitivity to initial conditions and appearance of multiple solutions. The occurrence of resonant solution associated with impacts increased efficiency of the energy harvesting process.

Opis:
The state of knowledge in the field of conversion of energy of mechanical vibrations into electrical energy using nonlinear electromagnetic generators is presented. The principle of operation of the considered converters is based on the Faraday law. The electromotive force is induced by the relative movement of the coil or permanent magnets under impact of externally applied vibrations. In order to diminish the disadvantages of conventional generators, namely the narrow frequency bandwidth, in recent years the nonlinear systems were introduced that exhibit the nonlinear resonance phenomenon. Broadening the frequency bandwidth, in which the power generated by the system is relatively high, is realized via introduction of nonlinear force into system kinematics. Designing such systems becomes a big challenge. Based on thorough survey of recent publications as well as on own expertise in the field, the work compares a few concepts of nonlinear electromechanical minigenerators in term of their functional characteristics and design problems. Sample calculations of frequency characteristics using time- and frequency-domain models are presented.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have existed for many years and had assimilated many interesting innovations. Advances in electronics, radio transceivers, processes of IC manufacturing and development of algorithms for operation of such networks now enable creating energy-efficient devices that provide practical levels of performance and a sufficient number of features. Environmental monitoring is one of the areas in which WSNs can be successfully used. At the same time this is a field where devices must either bring their own power reservoir, such as a battery, or scavenge energy locally from some natural phenomena. Improving the efficiency of energy harvesting methods reduces complexity of WSN structures. This survey is based on practical examples from the real world and provides an overview of state-of-the-art methods and techniques that are used to create energyefficient WSNs with energy harvesting.

The paper deals with an MR damper-based vibration reduction system with energy harvesting capability. The main part of the system creates an MR damper and a power generator based on an electromagnetic transduction mechanism, which are integrated into a stand- -alone device (so called energy harvesting MR damper). The main objective of the work is to evaluate performance of the proposed vibration reduction system employed in a single DOF mechanical structure. The material outlines the design structure and characteristics of the energy harvesting MR damper, presents the vibration reduction system based on this damper and explores experimental testing of the system implemented in a single DOF mechanical structure. To demonstrate that the devised system is feasible, performance figures maps completed by experimental data are shown.

The newly developed ideal rectifier bridge equipped with four N-type MOSFETs and two rail-to-rail operational amplifiers is a part of a typical energy harvesting conditioning circuit responsible for the rectification stage in the system of converting the energy harvested from vibrations into electrical energy to power the MR damper. The only energy loss in the bridge is caused by the voltage loss in transistors’ channels. The first sections of the work summarises the structural design of the bridge, the simulation procedure under the RL load and by sine voltage inputs with predetermined frequency and amplitude range, and benchmarks the results against those obtained for the conventional bridge based on Schottky diodes. In the second section, the PCB prototype of the bridge is analysed, and measurement data are compiled. The third section reports on the laboratory testing of the developed bridge converting the harvested energy in an MR damper-based vibration reduction system.

An optimized method of vibration Energy Harvesting is based on a step-down transformer that regulates the power flow from the piezoelectric element to the desired electronic load. Taking into account parameters of the whole system, the “optimal” voltage gain the piezoelectric transformer can be determined where the harvested power is maximized for the actual level of mechanical excitation. Consequently the piezoelectric transformers can be used to boost up the conversion of mechanical strain into electrical power with considerable potential in Energy Harvesting applications. Nowadays however, the most important factor is usage of lead free material for its construction. Additional desired parameters of such ceramics include high value of piezoelectric coefficients, low dielectric losses and reasonable power density. This work for first time proposes a lead free K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN) material implementation for stack type of piezoelectric transformer that is designed for load efficiency optimization of vibration energy harvester.

The paper presents a circuit structure that can be used for powering an IoT (Internet of Things) sensor node and that can use energy just from its surroundings. The main advantage of the presented solution is its very low cost that allows mass applicability e.g. in the IoT smart grids and ubiquitous sensors. It is intended for energy sources that can provide enough voltage but that can provide only low currents such as piezoelectric transducers or small photovoltaic panels (PV) under indoor light conditions. The circuit is able to accumulate energy in a capacitor until a certain level and then to pass it to the load. The presented circuit exhibits similar functionality to a commercially available EH300 energy harvester (EH). The paper compares electrical properties of the presented circuit and the EH300 device, their form factors and costs. The EH circuit’s performance is tested together with an LTC3531 buck-boost DC/DC converter which can provide constant voltage for the following electronics. The paper provides guidelines for selecting an optimal capacity of the storage capacitor. The functionality of the solution presented is demonstrated in a sensor node that periodically transmits measured data to the base station using just the power from the PV panel or the piezoelectric generator. The presented harvester and powering circuit are compact part of the sensor node’s electronics but they can be also realized as an external powering module to be added to existing solutions.

The paper summarises the results of laboratory testing of an energy harvesting vibration reduction system based on a magnetorheological (MR) damper whose control circuit incorporates a battery of bipolar electrolytic capacitors (current cut-off circuit). It is designed to reduce the undesired effects in vibration reduction systems of this type, associated with the increasing amplitude of the sprung mass vibration under the excitation inputs whose frequency should exceed the resonance frequency of the entire system. Results have demonstrated that incorporating a current cut-off circuit results in a significant decrease of sprung mass vibration amplitudes when the frequency of acting excitation inputs is higher than the resonance frequency.

This paper considers a fading cognitive multiple access channel (CMAC), where multiple secondary users (SUs), who share the spectrum with a primary user (PU), transmit to a cognitive base station (CBS). A power station is assumed to harvest energy from the nature and then provide power to the SUs. We investigate the power allocation problems for such a CMAC to maximize the SU sum rate under the interference power constraint, the sum transmit power constraint and the peak transmit power constraint of each individual SU. In particular, two scenarios are considered: with successive interference cancellation (SIC) and without SIC. For the first scenario, the optimal power allocation algorithm is derived. For the second scenario, a heuristic algorithm is proposed. We show that the proposed algorithm with SIC outperforms the algorithm without SIC in terms of the SU sum rate, while the algorithm without SIC outperforms the algorithm with SIC in terms of the number of admitted SUs for a high sum transmit power limit and a low peak transmit power limit of each individual SU.

The paper presents the coupled static and dynamic mechanical–electromagnetic finite element analyses of an electromechanical vibration energy harvesting converter with permanent–magnet excitation. The system consists of a small, milliwatt power range, linear–motion generator connected to a cantilever–beam spring element. The finite element equations derived for the mechanical part of the system according to the 1–D Timoshenko beam theory are coupled strongly with those describing the 2–D distribution of magnetic field in the generator and those associated with the electric circuit. The considered electromechanical coupling allows for prediction of static and dynamic response of the system subjected to action of externally applied force. The static displacement of the moving element is computed via solution of the nonlinear system of equations and is used as an initial solution in dynamic analysis. For computation of the dynamic response of the system the time–stepping procedure based on the Crank– Nicolson discretisation schema is applied. The models are positively validated against the measurements carried out on the laboratory test–stand.

In vivo biomedical devices are one of the most studied applications for vibrational energy harvesting. In this paper, we investigated a novel high-displacement device for harvesting heartbeats to power leadless implantable pacemakers. Due to the location peculiarities, certain constraints must be respected for the design of such devices. Indeed, the total dimension of the system must not exceed 5.9 mm to be usable within the leadless pacemakers and it must be able to generate accelerations lower than 0.25 m/s2 at frequencies of less than 50 Hz. The proposed design is an electrostatic system based on a square electret of dimension 4.5 mm. It is based on the Quasi-Concertina structure, which has a very low resonant frequency of 26.02 Hz and a low stiffness of 0.492 N/m, allowing it to be very useful in such an application. Using a Teflon electret charged at 1000 V, the device was able to generate an average power of 10.06 μW at a vibration rate of 0.25 m/s2 at the resonant frequency.

One of the crucial parameters affecting the solar cell efficiency is the absorption rate versus solar spectrum. Metallic nanoparticles deposited on the cell surface can mediate this process. Main mechanisms of absorption enhancement due to metallic nanoparticle plasmons were proposed: (1) the scattering of incident solar light causing increase of the optical path length inside active layer and local enhancement of the electric field; (2) near field coupling between plasmon and semiconductor and the direct generation of electron-hole pairs in the semiconductor. The field concentration effect can be described by classical electrodynamic theory, the coupling between metallic nanoparticle plasmons and band electrons in semiconductor substrate must be captured upon quantum mechanics. In this paper we took the challenge to develop fast and reliable method for calculation of device optical properties by application of COMSOL system appropriately configured to take into account these quantum effects, via the quantum modification of the dielectric function of semiconductor substrate and metallic components. The presented results indicate that the efficiency of energy transfer due to near field coupling of metallic nanoparticle plasmons with semiconductor substrate is much more effective than the absorption increase due to metallic nanoparticle plasmons scattering only.

Experimental results shown the response of prepared hybrid material to the rate of changes of direction of magnetic field vector. Investigation were mainly focused on possibility of generating of electric power from prepared material. It was found that the prepared hybrid material exhibits magnetoelectric effect in the case of work when direction of magnetic field vector was changing. This effect might be use in Energy Harvesting applications.

Opis:
The paper deals with an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) facilitating voltage conversion in thermoelectric energy harvesters. The chip is intended to be used to boost up the voltage coming from a thermoelectric module to a level that is required by electronic circuits constituting wireless sensor nodes. The designed charge pump does not need any external parts for its proper operation because all the capacitors, switches and oscillator are integrated on the common silicon die. The topography of the main functional blocks and post-layout simulations of the designed integrated circuit are shown in the article.

Opis:
In vibration control with piezoceramics, a high coupling of the piezoelement with the structure is desired. A high coupling improves the damping performance of passive techniques like shunt damping. The coupling can be influenced by a the material properties of the piezoceramics, but also by the placement within the structure and the size of the transducer. Detailed knowlegde about the vibration behavior of the structure is required for this. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the optimal shape of piezoelectric elements. General results for one-dimensional, but inhomogeneos strain distribution are provided. These results are applied to the case of a longitudinal transducer and a bending bimorph. It is obtained that for maximum coupling, only a certain fracture of the volume should be made of piezoelectric material. . .

Opis:
The paper presents study of a pseudo-magnetic levitation system (pseudo-maglev) dedicated for energy harvesting. The idea rely on motion of a pseudo-levitating magnet in a coil’s terminal. The study based on real prototype harvester system, which in the pendulum dynamic vibration absorber is applied. For some parameters, the stability loss caused by the period doubling bifurcation is detected. The coexistence of two stable solutions, one of which is much better for energy harvesting is observed. The influence of the pseudo-maglev parameters on the recovered current and stability of the periodic solutions is presented in detail. The obtained results show, that the best energy recovery occurs for the high pseudo-maglev stiffness and close to the coil resistance. The amplitude’s excitation, the load resistances and the coupling coefficient strongly influence on the system’s response.

Opis:
One of the ways to decrease thermal conductivity is nano structurization. Cobalt triantimonide (CoSb3) samples with added indium or tellurium were prepared by the direct fusion technique from high purity elements. Ingots were pulverized and re-compacted to form electrodes. Then, the pulsed plasma in liquid (PPL) method was applied. All materials were consolidated using rapid spark plasma sintering (SPS). For the analysis, methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with a laser flash apparatus (LFA) were used. For density measurement, the Archimedes’ method was used. Electrical conductivity was measured using a standard four-wire method. The Seebeck coefficient was calculated to form measured Seebeck voltage in the sample placed in a temperature gradient. The preparation method allowed for obtaining CoSb3 nanomaterial with significantly lower thermal conductivity (10 Wm–1K–1 for pure CoSb3 and 3 Wm–1K–1 for the nanostructured sample in room temperature (RT)). The size of crystallites (from SEM observations) in the powders prepared was about 20 nm, joined into larger agglomerates. The Seebeck coefficient, α, was about –200μVK–1 in the case of both dopants, In and Te, in microsized material and about −400 μK−1 for the nanomaterial at RT. For pure CoSb3 , α was about 150 μVK−1 and it stood at −50 μVK−1 for nanomaterial at RT. In bulk nanomaterial samples, due to a decrease in electrical conductivity and inversion of the Seebeck coefficient, there was no increase in ZT values and the ZT for the nanosized material was below 0.02 in the measured temperature range, while for microsized In-doped sample it reached maximum ZT = 0.7 in (600K).
