Opis:
Encyclopedias are studied in view of an effect of the encyclopedic information on the public opinion. It is noted that during the Soviet era, the most important encyclopedias, such as the Soviet Encyclopedia or the Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia, functioned as a strategic tool for the propaganda of communist ideology, the popularization of Soviet socialism, and others like that. It is concluded that nowadays the making of national encyclopedias can be considered as an effective activity in promoting of national values in Ukrainian contemporary society.
У дослідженні енциклопедичні видання висвітлено з точки зору їхнього впливу на громадську думку. Зауважено, що за радянської доби найвагоміші енциклопедії, як-то «Велика радянська енциклопедія» чи «Українська радянська енциклопедія», слугували стратегічним інструментом пропаганди комуністичної ідеології, популяризації радянського соціалізму тощо. З’ясовано, що підготовка енциклопедичних видань національного характеру в сьогоднішніх умовах може розглядатися як дієвий засіб прищеплювання національних цінностей в українському суспільстві.

Статтю присвячено 20-річчю від часу появи першого тому “Енциклопедії Сучасної України” (ЕСУ), який побачив світ у 2001 році. З цієї нагоди фахівцями Інституту енциклопедичних досліджень НАН України було здійснено анкетне опитування користувачів електронної версії ЕСУ. У цій статті автор презентує результати опитування, опрацьовані методами статистичного аналізу, та пропонує окремі інтерпретації отриманих результатів. Здобута інформація має важливе значення для подальшого розвитку ЕСУ в мережі Інтернет, оскільки дає змогу зрозуміти потреби й оцінку її користувачів.
The article is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of beginning the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine (EMU), the first volume of which was published in 2001. On this occasion, scholars of NASU Institute of Encyclopedic Research conducted a sociological study of people that are being used the online version of the EMU. In this article, the author presents the results of this study processed by methods of statistical analysis, and offers some discussions based on the results. Acquired information is important for the further progression of the EMU on the Internet, because it allows getting feedback from encyclopedia users.

The paper describes the conception of logic in Polish didactics authored by the Commission of National Education (KEN), an important educational institution of the European  Enlightenment. Since the documents of the Commission refer to a vision of science presented by such influential works then as the Encyclopédie ou dictionnaire universel raisonné [Great French Encyclopedia], the paper compares the requirements from the Commission’s programmer with the encyclopaedic entries that entail logical problems broadly understood. It turns out that the Commission, following the Encyclopédie, not only recommended a list of textbooks of logic but also shared its eclectic vision of logic. Although it is characteristic of modernity to take a relative approach to the importance of traditional logic, transformed into science on method, or literally an outline of epistemology, understood according to É. Condillac as a specific form of metaphysics, nevertheless some elements of logic were eclectically made valid. This logic, from the times of I. Kant, has been defined as formal logic. Practical logical skills were preferred to the knowledge of logical theories. At the same time attention was paid to the meaning of natural logical skills, and drills in logical reasoningwhen studying languages and mathematics. Despite preferences for the analytical method they also noticed the importance of synthetic method. It seems also that although the documents of the Commission do not say anything about the teaching of syllogistic issues, in didactic practice inspired by the Encyclopédie in the schools controlled by the Commission, the room was made to teach these problems. Condillac’s book was preferred in the schools controlled by the Commission, nevertheless, it was not, as in the case of other textbooks, a must on the reading list, an obligatory reading matter, therefore it was not published in Poland. The conception of logic presented by the Commission as modelled on the Encyclopédie managed to avoid the one-sidedness of Condillac’s approach, the approach that in fact eliminated the teaching of logic.

Biographical information in articles about scientists depends on their implementation level in several areas of life.
Показано, що в «Енциклопедії Сучасної України» у статтях про вчених є тенденція висвітлювати інші, окрім наукового, види діяльності персоналій. У зв’язку з цим простежено основні проблеми, що виникають у процесі подання інформації про особу, яка відома не лише науковою, а й іншою діяльністю (суспільною, громадсько-політичною, мистецькою, літературною, спортивною тощо). Часто цей бік діяльності науковця залишається осторонь уваги укладачів енциклопедичних видань, особливо галузевих. Звернено увагу на особливості подання інформації в статті-персоналії залежно від характеру реалізації особи в кількох галузях життєдіяльності.

Opis:
The article discusses “The Encyclopedia of the Ghetto”. Created in 1944 in the Łódź ghetto, it is the only text of this kind in the literature of the Holocaust. Its authors were inmates of the Łódź ghetto, hailing from both the city, as well as from the so-called “Old Reich”. They decided to describe the whole community along with its characteristic vocabulary in a form of an encyclopedia. Referring to the introduction by Oskar Rosenfeld dated December 1943, the article presents the idea behind the encyclopedia, its objectives, and its key assumptions. It discusses the structure and construction of entries. Examples have been provided of entries referring to various areas of the ghetto life, with certain entries notably missing from the text, the possible causes of which have been addressed in the article.

Today, humans have the phase of the social organization evolution, in which information, communication technologies, and knowledge are fundamental objects of production, as well as the digital environment is an important space for the development of society. There are problems of people’s digital literacy actualized by the increasing role of the existing and growing in information and knowledge in society from Internet environment. This study illustrates the issue of getting digital literacy using online encyclopedic resources on the case about informing the pandemic of coronavirus disease COVID-19 worldwide in 2019-2020. Based on analysis of the mentioned virological topic articles of the national encyclopedias of Europe (Britannica, Brockhaus, Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, Great Norwegian Encyclopedia, Wikipedia, etc.) the conclusion is made that encyclopedic knowledge is inert and during the pandemic, it has a low practical role for the needs of humans in the context of safe behavior and right decisions. However, Wikipedia differs from other national online encyclopedias by offering much more information including that is not commonly found in classical encyclopedias, but is useful to readers.
Нині світ перебуває на тій стадії еволюційного розвитку цивілізації, у якій інформація та знання стають основоположними продуктами виробництва. Збільшення ролі інформації й знань в житті суспільства, які поширюються в інтернет-просторі, актуалізує проблеми цифрової освіченості (грамотності / компетенції) людей. У цьому дослідженні на окремому прикладі, пов’язаному з пандемією коронавірусної інфекції в період 2019–2020 років, показано значення онлайн-енциклопедій у процесі формування цифрової освіченості. Проаналізувавши статті на тему COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, які подають національні енциклопедії Європи (й України зокрема), зроблено висновок про інертність енциклопедичних знань і невисоку їх практичну цінність для переважної більшості населення з точки зору поведінки й рішень під час пандемії. У цьому контексті вирізняється «Вікіпедія», пропонуючи значно більший масив довідкових даних, зокрема й тих, що зазвичай не властиві класичним енциклопедіям, однак корисні для читачів.

The research is devoted to issues of the ecosystem of encyclopedic knowledge. The fact is that a reference information is now increasingly used as means of media manipulation in level of public consciousness (for political, ideological, and economic reasons). This is well traced on the example of online encyclopedias with free access to editing of posted information such as Wikipedia. This article is based on the description of the online analytical report on encyclopedias in Europe written by experts of the European Parliament.
Дослідження присвячено питанням екосистеми енциклопедичних знань. Річ у тім, що довідкову інформацію нині дедалі частіше використовують як засіб маніпуляції громадською свідомістю (з політичних, ідеологічних, економічних тощо міркувань), що яскраво помітно на прикладі онлайн-енциклопедій з вільним доступом до редагування розміщеної інформації, зокрема таких, як «Вікіпедія». Статтю побудовано на основі опису аналітичного звіту про онлайн-енциклопедії в країнах Європи, який підготували фахівці Європейського парламенту.

The article offers an overview of the life of anthropologist Ivan Rakovsky who is an editor in chief of the Ukrainian General Encyclopedia (1930–1935) as the first Ukrainian universal reference work. У статті запропоновано огляд життєвого шляху антрополога Івана Раковського – головного редактора першої української універсальної енциклопедії – «Української загальної енциклопедії» (1930–1935). Описано біографічні відомості науковця крізь призму становлення його як енциклопедиста, створення УЗЕ, її підготовки та діяльності в Науковому товаристві імені Шевченка.

The aim of the article is a genological analysis of the oldest Polish-language encyclopedia, i.e. Informacyja matematyczna [Mathematical information] by Wojciech Bystrzonowski (first edition 1743). It is a continuous text divided into chapters devoted to various fields of knowledge included in the groups of topics that deal with theoretical and practical problems. This conception of text influenced its genre diversity: theoretical parts were overpowered by genres serving an informative function (e. g. description, list, index), but sometimes also a persuasive function (e. g. a treaty, a matter), while the practical parts included genres fulfilling a predominantly directive function (e. g. military regulations, instructions). The genres combining informative and ludic functions were also marginally present (e. g. Latin-language mnemotechnical poems woven into the text). Such extreme internal diversity of genres had several reasons: a) high diversity of topics, b) reference to silva rerum literary formula developed in the Baroque period, c) reference to and benefit from dozens of different studies conducted by Polish and Latin-language authors. Based on the example of selected parts of the text (e. g. descriptions), it was proved that we can observe in Bystrzonowski’s compendium a development process of a new genre, i.e. an encyclopedic entry.

There’s always been a question, whether reportage is literature or not, but nobody has ever asked, whether there is any connection between this genre and science. The main purpose of this thesis is to prove that reportage is a literary genre closely related to the humanities and social sciences. By analyzing two multi-genred works, which contain elements typical both of reportage and dictionary: Egzamin na świra, czyli mały i niepraktyczny słownik slangu hipisowskiego… by Jacek Hugo -Bader and Jakuck. Słownik miejsca by Michał Książek, I will try to find out what kind of impact is created by mixing those genres. The thesis will be started by discussion concerning main features of both kinds of works and their styles and after that, precise reading will prove, if the main idea of the article was reasonable or not.

The article is devoted to the 5th anniversary of the electronic version of the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine (EMU) on the Internet (website: esu.com.ua). The study reveals the functions performed by the EMU can be better implemented due to its online version. These include accumulating of nationally relevant knowledge (about Ukraine, Ukrainians, Ukrainian phenomena and realities) and disseminating it in society, playing an important educational role, fostering patriotic feelings among Ukrainians based of this knowledge, understanding of national ideas, self-identifying, etc. The EMU website has high traffic, search engine positioning (Google), therefore, provides access to encyclopedic knowledge of a much larger audience than a printed version of this encyclopedia. The disadvantages of the online version of ESU are also highlighted. First of all, the words in the text are shortened like in paper encyclopedias, which have a reason to save space on the pages. There is also no English section. Today, English-language versions of the articles would contribute to destruct the stereotypes about Ukraine, its people, language, culture, history, etc., formed by the Soviet picture of the world (Pax Sovietica) as well as supported and deepened by followers of the Russian world (Pax Russica).
Статтю присвячено 5-й річниці електронної версії «Енциклопедії Сучасної України», представленій в мережі Інтернет (сайт esu.com.ua). Показано функції, покладені на ЕСУ, зокрема акумулювати національно релевантні знання (про Україну, українців, українство) й поширювати їх у суспільстві, відігравати важливу просвітницьку роль, виховуючи на основі цих знань патріотичні почуття в українців, розуміння національної ідеї, самоідентичності тощо. Наголошено, що функції ЕСУ будуть краще реалізовані завдяки саме появі її онлайн-версії. Веб-сайт ЕСУ має високі показники відвідуваності, позиціювання в пошукових системах (Google), забезпечує доступ до енциклопедичних знань значно ширшої аудиторії, ніж видрукуваний наклад томів. Окреслено й недоліки онлайн-версії ЕСУ, зокрема прийняту редакцією систему скорочень слів. У сучасних умовах особливого значення набувають англомовні версії статей, що сприяли б боротьбі зі стереотипами щодо України, її народу, мови, культури, історії тощо, сформованими ще радянською картиною світу й активно підтримуваними, а то й поглиблюваними адептами «русского міра».
