Opis:

End-Member Mixing Analysis was used to identify factors affecting river chemistry during a snow melt induced spring high flow event in an agricultural catchment (187 ha) in NE Poland. Results showed that temporal variability in the flow pathways and solute sources during snowmelt were controlled by soil frost. Before and in the very early stages of the event, stream water chemistry was solely dependent on the deep flow path component. Concurrent with progressing snowmelt, the importance of chemicals washed out from near the surface layer of frozen soils by surface runoff in-creased and the stream shifted toward a NO3, NH4+, PO43– -rich composition. Solutes transported along with overland flow had the most pronounced impact on river chemistry during peak discharge. As a result of progressive ground thaw, the relative importance of pre-event riparian soil and groundwater that displaced by infiltrating flood water increased. These two end-member were responsible for export of 88% nitrates and 98% orthophosphates from the catchment. The high concentration of solutes (primarily NO3) in the river outflow suggests that during snowmelt, either fluxes of agricultural contaminants bypassed potential buffers (which could constrain their impact on freshwater ecosystems) or that existing buffers were ineffective in removing the contaminants that moved along shallow hydrological pathways. In early spring, high export of NO3 along surface and shallow subsurface hydrological pathways may be little affected by vegetation of the widely promoted buffer strips because at this time of the year the vegetation is still in a dormant phase. Thus, the short period of snowmelt flood may be perceived as critical from the river water quality perspective.

Two American 20th century novels by American George R.R. Martin, namely „A Game of Thrones” (1996) and „A Clash of Kings” (1999) are original, literary paraphrases of Flaubert’s bovarism. The article presents a few theories of bo-varism, a literature review and particularly the conception of love, longing and dreams. This article describes literary transposition of bovarism with regard to Sansa Stark, the heroine of American novels. Sansa Stark’s existence can be reduced to a few, important aspects of the analysed phenomenon such as: suffering from bovaristic hunger of sensual and psychical impressions (intensified by reading romance novels, for example „Song of Florian and Jonquil”), unquenchable desire to be somewhere else that real–time location, existential disappointment, longing for another, better world identified with King’s Landing, producing fantasmatic sensations. As far as Sansa Stark is concerned, she is a neurotic and bored heroine, what draws her closer to Madame Bovary.

The purpose of the present paper is to analyse epistolary and descriptive conventions in Journal and Letters, from France and Great Britain (1833) by Emma Willard. The article argues that Willard attempts to combine the standards of 18th-century travelogue with its emphasis on instruction with a new type of autobiographical travel narrative which puts the persona of a traveller in the foreground. In this respect, Willard’s Journal and Travels, for all its didacticism, testifies to an increasing value attached to subjective experience, which was to become one of the distinguishing features of nineteenth-century travel writing.

Opis:
The article deals with the worldview and aesthetic principles behind the creative work of Emma Andijewska, which were discussed during a telephone conversation with the author of this article. We analysed the specifics of her creative laboratory, reflections on the place, role of the writer in modern life, and peculiarities of artistic writing. The author’s individuality appears on the background of the historical era in various forms of inter-textual and intra-textual relations. The key concept of analytical discourse is autometatextuality. The unifying principle of building an image of personality and an image of reality is an aesthetic element where a fiction text and a document form a natural unity. The narrative on creative practices reveals a personal history of one of the most prominent figures of modern times, a “woman of the era” (as she is often called), writer and painter Emma Andijewska. She was born on March 19, 1931 in Stalino (now Donetsk). Due to her serious illness, the family moved to Vyshhorod (1937), and later to Kyiv (1939), where they faced the beginning of the war. In 1943, the NKVDists (People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs of the USSR) killed her father, a famous chemistinventor, so that the Germans could not use his inventions. Fearing reprisals against the entire family, her mother took her young children and went across the military front, under the cannonade, to the West. At the age of twelve, Emma Andijewska came to Germany, where she attended a German boys’ school. In 1957, she graduated from the Ukrainian Free University with degrees in Philosophy and Philology while defending a master’s thesis on The Causes of Fundamental Issues in the Newest Ukrainian Metric in front of Volodymyr Derzhavin. The same year, with her family, she moved to New York, where in 1959 she married a literary critic, essayist, and writer, Ivan Koshelivets, with whom she lived until his death. After the marriage, the couple returned to Munich, Germany, where Andijewska still lives. For a long time (since 1959 to 1995), she worked at Radio Liberty as an announcer, screenwriter, producer, and editor of the Ukrainian department. Despite the forced isolation from her native land and impossibility to visit Ukraine for a long time, throughout her life Emma Andijewska has preserved a devoted, fervent love for the language, culture, and history of her native people and put all her strength and energy into the self-sacrificing and faithful service to them. Thanks to her art, Ukraine is known and respected all over the world, and her paintings are stored in the leading museums across all continents. She is open to the world and the world is open to her. The literature works of the great Ukrainian have been translated into many languages and even their general list is impressive. More than forty poetry books, three novels (the fourth is being written), several books of short stories and tales, more than seventeen thousand paintings – they are all created by Emma Andijewska. The polyphonic art of the artist and writer impresses with unique energy and the discipline of mind, where every word is worth its weight in gold. Its magic relies on a deep intellectual sense arising from powerful spiritual potential.

Opis:
The essay reflects on Emma Dante, the unusual and versatile artist (theatre manager, actress-author, film and opera director). Emma Dante’s story condenses different and apparently conflicting experiences and knowledge (the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome, the teachings of Vacis in Turin, the laboratories with Cesare Ronconi) before the foundation of the Sud Costa Occidentale group in Palermo, in 1999, with its subsequent transformations continuing until today. The result is an irregular figure of a “matriarch”, in the fruitful vein of new Sicilian dramaturgy, which takes nourishment from the land of origin but with which she feeds a collective and authorial theatre. This theatre is both dramatic (indeed tragi-comic) and post-dramatic, with European depth, and it is not spared of controversy and criticism, as it is awkward and uncomfortable. The analysis of her performance in Cani di bancata (2006) aims to highlight themes and styles connected to a feminism that goes beyond gender in the strict sense but that is able to become a metaphor of a world and a human diversity that involves and disturbs us through an irreverent gaze.

The article analyses methods of the presentation of a literary competition in the novel Obrączka (“The wedding ring”) (1907) by Emma Dmochowska (maiden name Jeleńska). The portrayal of the protagonist who takes part in a drama competition is investigated in the context of Dmochowska’s experiences, of her participations in literary competitions and in the context of other literary works published at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, where this motif is employed. The mechanisms of the literary competitions in Obrączka are also compared to the practices implemented by the administrators of the literary competitions in Poland in the second half of the 19th century. This allows to reconstruct the profile of the institution of literary competition in Obrączka (especially with regard to its position in the literary life in the second half of the 19th century and its influence on the literary market).

The Czech coinage of the tenth and eleventh century is shown as a very complex issue. The paper seeks to explore two of them. One is the origin of Emma Regina, whose coins were supposedly minted in Mielnik. Having presented and briefl y analysed medievalists’ hypotheses concerning the origin of Emma, the author concurred with the hypothesis of her French origin. Next, the article examines a coin referred to as denarius episcopi, i.e., minted by an unnamed bishop. Having emended the coins’ inscription, S. Opis:
Taking into account important changes that have taken place in the last 20 years in the fields of performance studies and cultural studies (especially de- and post-colonial studies) regarding the way in which local cultures and ethnicity are represented in the theatre and interpreted in the humanities, this article revises the ways of presenting local cultures in the Italian dialect theatre of the last decade. This analysis shows how a hegemonic (at least until recently) dramatic model developed by Eduardo de Filippo and based on producing nostalgia towards an idealised past of a local culture needs to be critically reformulated, especially from the perspective of a young generation of female artists who work in the field of dialect theatre. To this end, in this article, the author analyses the performing strategies of two of Emma Dante’s plays, mPalermu and Carnezzeria, to prove that localness is not an essentially understood characteristic of a certain community, but, rather, it should be seen as a complex performative, repetitive practice that is both bodily and discursive. Conversely, the author points out that these practices should be examined in depth and seen as a kind of cultural oppression that serves as a camouflage of some deeper imprinted relationships based on violence and domination. The examples of Emma Dante’s plays from the beginning of her career allow the author to also cast a critical gaze at an issue of primordialism, raised by Arjun Appadurai and seen as a way of viewing the Other. The latter reflects a voyeuristic pleasure of the Western world, coming from the sense of dominance over allegedly underdeveloped and primitive cultures. Emma Dante’s theatre, according to the author of this article, is an example of de-colonial artistic practice, as it subversively uses the voyeuristic inclinations of the viewer to denounce the violent character of local Sicilian scripts of behaviour that, until now, had usually been left unsaid in public debate.

The article analyses generic conventions, gender constraints and authorial self-definition in two ante-bellum American travel accounts – Emma Hart Willard’s Journal and Letters, from France and Great Britain (1833) and Catharine Maria Sedgwick’s Letters from Abroad to Kindred at Home (1841). Emma Hart Willard, a pioneer in women’s higher education and Catharine Maria Sedgwick, an author of sentimental novels, were influential figures of the Early Republic, active in the literary public sphere. Narrative personas adopted in their travel letters have been shaped by the authors’ national identity on the one hand and by ideals of republican motherhood, which they propagated, on the other. Both travelogues are preceded with apologies filled with self-deprecating rhetoric, typical for women’s travel writing in the early 19th century and both are intended to instruct the American reader. Other conventional features of American antebellum travel writing include comparisons between British and American government and society with a view of extolling the latter as well as avid interest in social status and public activities of European women. Willard and Sedgwick deal with possible gender anxieties of their upper middle-class female readers by assuring them that following one’s literary or educational vocation in the public sphere does necessarily mean compromising ideals of true womanhood in private life.

Opis:
The paper presents two examples of how a literary text applying archaization as a stylistic device can be translated into a foreign language. The sample material consists of two Polish novels in which the intended archaization fulfils fundamentally different functions and is treated differently by German translators: the classic historical novel Krzyżacy (1897–1900) by Henryk Sienkiewicz in the translation by Emma and Rudolfine Ettlinger, and the pastiche of an epistolary novel Wariacje pocztowe (1972) by Kazimierz Brandys in the translation by Roswitha Buschmann. While the translators of Sienkiewicz remain committed to the language usage of the late 19th century or to German “standard archaic usage” (G. Leech), Buschmann draws on several target-language historical varieties and imitates the style of the German Schelmenroman (picaresque novel). In her totally archaizing translation, the literary (genre-related) stylisation dominates over the purely linguistic.
