Opis:
Novel cryogels based on pectin and chitosan were obtained by a cryotropic gelation method. Percentage of chitosan in the cryogels was estimated by elemental analysis. The obtained values were from 3.50 to 15.03 % for Apple pectin/Chitosan cryogels and from 9.44 to 17.64 % for Heracleum pectin/Chitosan cryogels. Internal structure and porosity of the cryogels were measured by scanning electron microscopy. According to the scanning electron microscopy, cryogels have a macroporous sheet-like structure. In the future, cryogels can be used in biotechnology and medicine as biocompatible, biodegradable materials.

Opis:
In this work, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis is optimized for direct estimation of elemental composition, thermal conductivity and hardness for Ni-Cr-Nb alloys. These alloys were chosen with a variable elemental content of niobium and chromium. The influence of laser energy and shot numbers on measuring line intensity was investigated. Based on the ratio between two spectral lines, calibration curves were formed to estimate the element concentration and LIBS results were confirmed with related energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) data. Hardness and thermal conductivity estimation using LIBS were done by measuring the ratio between two spectral lines, plasma excitation temperature and electron density for different samples. Semi-empirical formulas correlated hardness and thermal conductivity with plasma temperature were established.

Opis:
Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad. (Watermelon) belongs to Cucurbitaceae family. Watermelon can be correctly referred as either fruit or vegetable. The watermelon has attracted attention of many researchers due to various kinds of its medicinal properties. A watermelon has basically four parts as rind, white flesh, red flesh and seed. There are a number of varieties of watermelon in which the central ripped part may be dark red, light red, pink, or yellow. The new variety is watermelon is also available without seed or very few seed called seedless watermelon. In the present investigation the dark red flesh variety of watermelon was chosen. Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn and Zn were investigated in rind, white flesh, dark red flesh and seed. It was found interesting that the amount of calcium (Ca) in all these four parts was very high and highest in the white flesh (unripped) of watermelon.

Various types of neuromuscular diseases differ in symptoms, pathology, and clinical picture but one of their common elements is muscle weakness, which could lead to human motor activities impairment and in many cases to shortening of life span and even death due to respiratory failure. That is why it is very important to better understand the underlying causes of these diseases to be able to implement new methods of treatment more effectively. This paper presents the results of the elemental analysis of human muscular tissues affected by dystrophy and myopathy. For this purpose, the particle-induced X-ray emission method was used, which is perfectly suited for measuring light elements. The samples were analysed for differences in the elemental composition of Na, Mg, P, S, Cl, K, Fe, Zn, and Br. The results were presented in the form of elemental concentration maps and a thorough statistical analysis of the obtained data using the advanced statistical methods.

An investigation of single-base propellants has been conducted. The ageing process during extended storage of single-base propellants (SBP) in nonheated military stores and a heated building has been investigated by elemental analysis. Two or three different absorbencies around the band at 1650 cm-1 were observed by FTIR spectroscopy. In this way, not only the denitration of the propellants was determined, but also cleavage of -O-C- bonds between the glycoside rings in the nitrocellulose macromolecules. The latter process was confirmed by the swelling of the SBP.

Reactivity of (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane with cellulose. The paper presents the results of tests for the reactivity of (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMOS) with cellulose. The cellulose was treated with aqueous ethanolic solution of silane in two concentration: 5% and 20%. The reactivity of APTMOS with cellulose was analysed using instrumental methods: attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectrometry and elemental analysis. In the FTIR spectra of silane-treated cellulose, the bands of Si-O, Si-C and N-H bonds were detected. The analysis of silicon and nitrogen concentration in treated cellulose confirmed the presence of silane in cellulose structure. The presented results indicate that APTMOS forms chemical bonds with cellulose.
Analiza stężenia krzemu i azotu w modyfikowanej celulozie potwierdziła obecność silanu w strukturze celulozy. Przedstawione wyniki wskazują, że APTMOS tworzy wiązania chemiczne z celulozą.

Portable EDXRF (Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence) spectrometer with the ability to perform rock tests in a helium atmosphere was applied to prepare unique calibration coefficients and mineralogical models. These data could be used for the chemical profiling, chemostratigraphy, gamma-ray, TOC and lithological interpretation of borehole geological profile. The measurements were conducted on 19 samples of sandstones and compared to the XRF data without helium flow. The acquired dataset was calibrated to the chemical laboratory tests (ICP-MS), gamma-ray spectrometry measurements (RT-50) and combined with the mineralogical data (XRD). The new methodology enables the measurement of sodium and enhances the possibility of detecting magnesium, thorium and uranium, compared to standard handheld XRF spectrometers. The applied method is dedicated to whole cores (without sample preparation) or cuttings which must be cleaned, dried, milled and pressed.

Used in traditional medicine, infrared characterization of column eluates and elemental analysis of V. amygdalina was carried out to establish preliminary views of the chemical and mineral element composition of the leaf of this plant. In the five pure eluates obtained, we found that they contained saturated aliphatic esters, nitro-groups conjugated with benzene ring, secondary amines/nitrogen heterocycles, 1,3-disubstituted benzene and oxazine/oxazoline fragments, respectively. Moreover, we established that potassium, magnesium and sodium were the major minerals in the leaf, while copper, zinc, iron, nickel, manganese and chromium occurred in trace amounts. Research attention should therefore be focused on this plant for the full exploration and exploitation of its obvious antibiotic and mineral values.

The tested material was treated with ethanolic solution of aminosilane and analyzed using instrumental methods, including elemental analysis, atomic absorption spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy. The results of the chemical analysis indicated that [3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyl]trimethoxysilane exhibited reactivity with both cellulose and pine wood. In addition, AATMOS-treated cellulose showed a higher content of silicon and nitrogen and more significant changes in FTIR spectra than the treated wood, suggesting that AATMOS showed a higher reactivity to cellulose than to wood.

Badany materiał traktowano etanolowym roztworem aminosilanu i analizowano z wykorzystaniem metod instrumentalnych, takich jak: analiza elementarna, atomowa spektrometria absorpcyjna i spektroskopia w podczerwieni.

The scientific interest in air pollution comes from its influence on human health, the condition of cultural heritage and climate. The PM2.5 fraction (particles of a diameter of 2.5 mm or below), indirectly, has a significant impact on health which is associated with respiratory tract and blood vessel related diseases. However, not only the size, but also the content of the particles has a significant meaning. To determine the particulate matter contents, elemental analysis can be performed using numerous techniques, the most important of which is X-ray fluorescence. In this study, samples of PM2.5 fraction collected in Krakow, Poland were analyzed. The X-ray fluorescence method was used to perform elemental analysis. The gravimetric method was applied to determine the concentration of the PM2.5 fraction. Low detection limits of individual elements and precision of the X-ray fluorescence method were determined. The concentrations of the following elements: Cl, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr and Pb in the PM2.5 fraction samples collected in Krakow were evaluated. The homogeneity of the samples was also estimated. The concentrations of PM2.5 fraction collected in the summer of 2013 were in the range of 6–23 ng/m3. The concentrations of PM2.5 fraction collected in the winter of 2013 were in the range of 26–171 ng/m3. The precision of the method was found to be below 1% for elements with high concentration in the sample and 6–8 % for trace elements.

The purpose of the work was to select and validate the optimal method for analyzing sulfur content in drilling cores, including those from coal seams. In addition, research was done for petroleum. As part of the work, the results of sulfur content testing were compared by means of elemental analysis in 2 analyzers: in the EA 1108 elemental analyzer, which gives the possibility of burning samples at temperatures up to 1080°C, which is not always sufficient for geological samples, and in the Leco CR12 analyzer expanded with a module for determination of sulfur, which gives the opportunity to perform the analysis at 1350°C. In the course of elemental analysis, free and bound sulfur is transformed into sulfur dioxide SO2, the content of which is measured by means of various detectors: the thermal conductivity detector (TCD) in the EA 1108 analyzer, or the infrared detector in the Leco CR 12 analyzer. Before the comparative tests, the method of sulfur analysis in the Leco CR 12 analyzer was validated. Comparative studies were carried out for rock samples, for coals, for petroleum and for kerogen. As part of the work, elemental analyses of sulfur content were carried out for 23 coal samples, 22 rock samples, 5 kerogen samples separated from these rocks and for 9 petroleum samples. Tested coal and rock material samples came from drill cores from exploratory wells. The methods used for kerogen and for coals with sulfur content over 0.75 wt % have been shown to be compatible. For oils, compatibility was observed above 0.3% sulfur content. Much worse compliance was obtained for rock matter from drilling cores, characterized by dispersion of organic matter. For samples with low sulfur content, determinations in the EA 1108 analyzer provide more reliable results. For media with a high dispersion of organic matter, such as Istebna Beds, the results of determinations in the Leco CR12 analyzer are more reliable due to the size of the analytical sample.
