Life satisfaction among active and inactive people aged over 60 years oldThe research was carried out to find if activity is related to higher life satisfaction and if there is an association between life satisfaction and emotional intelligence, optimism and basic hope among the elders. 101 subjects aged over 60 years old took part in the study – 64 was active and 37 was inactive. The fi ndings suggest that there is an association between activity and life satisfaction among men – higher activity associate with higher life satisfaction. Active men were also more satisfi ed than active women. Life satisfaction is positively correlated with emotional intelligence, optimism and basic hope, but these variables are not related to activity.

Wobec prognoz demograficznych, wskazujących konsekwentnie na problem starzenia się społeczeństwa, warto przyjrzeć się problemowi mobilności osób starszych. Ocenia się bowiem, ze obecnie osoby starsze stanowią około 30% pasażerów, a w ciągu 20 lat odsetek ten wzrośnie do 50% [6], Jest to najbardziej niejednolita grupa - różniąca się preferencjami, poziomem sprawności, stanem zdrowia czy trybem życia. Jest to także najbardziej dotknięta uprzedzeniami grupa społeczna – zazwyczaj lekceważona, spychana na margines. Przemiany demograficzne i rosnąca długość życia niosą dla sektora transportu publicznego konieczność zmiany dotychczasowego myślenia w odniesieniu do planowania i zarządzania siecią transportu publicznego, polegającą na zwróceniu większej uwagi problem osób starszych ze szczególnym podkreśleniem tego, że jak pokazują badania, te osoby pasażerami komunikacji miejskiej nie są.
An aging society requires a fresh look on the problem of older people mobility. It is not easy as they are not forming a heterogeneous group - differing in preferences, life styles or health status. It is also so far a most neglected and affected by discrimination social group. This should change as it is forecasted that in 20 years older people are likely to represent even 50% of all public transport passengers. The biggest challenge so far is related to the fact that older people against expectations are in majority car users.

„Goniec Krakowski”, gazeta wydawana w Generalnym Gubernatorstwie przez niemieckie władze okupacyjne dla ludności polskiej (1939-1945), miała charakter zdecydowanie antyżydowski. Język wielu artykułów był prymitywny i brutalny, a także pełen kłamstw, przeinaczeń i obelg. Ta antyżydowska propaganda opierała się na starej teologii spiskowej, znanej z niesławnych Protokołów Starszych Syjonu: Żydzi dążą do opanowania światowej gospodarki, polityki i kultury. Kolejne etapy niemieckiej polityki wobec Żydów uzasadniano potrzebą „wyzwolenia” Polaków spod żydowskiej dominacji. Można było znaleźć artykuły dotyczące pracy przymusowej, ograniczenia działalności gospodarczej, represji wobec Żydów; wiele uwagi poświęcano też antyżydowskiej agitacji wśród Polaków. Z drugiej strony, masowa eksterminacja Żydów została całkowicie pominięta w gazecie.
„Goniec Krakowski”, a newspaper issued in the General Government by the German occupational authorities for the Polish population (1939-1945), had a strongly anti-Jewish character. The language of many articles was primitive and brutal, as well as full of lies, distortions and insults. This anti-Jewish propaganda was based on an old conspiracy theo-ry, knowing from infamous Protocols of the Elders of Zion: Jews seeking to control the world economy, politics and culture. The subsequent stages of the German policy toward the Jews was justified by need of ‘liberation’ of Poles from the Jewish domination. One could find articles related to forced labor, restrictions on economic activities, measures of repression toward Jews; much attention was also paid to anti-Jewish agitation among the Poles. On the other hand, the mass extermination of Jews has been completely omitted by the newspaper.

In the ancient Monastic Rules we can find various principles concerning the Community, persons and Monasteries. Among them we can also find some norms that apply to the so called „Elders” or „seniors”. They distinguish themselves from other monks, by being more advanced in the spiritual and ascetic life and because of this they are set as an example to follow for other Monks. For this reason they have rights to special respect from their fellow brothers. That is the first group of „Elders”. The other group of „Elders” contains Monks of venerable age. They occupy an important position in the monastic community and for this reason their advices, instructions, and admonishes are significant and are often treated as the legal rules. In some cases, „the Elders” are treated as substitutes of Superiors, for example: in preaching, in giving permissions, and in rebuking their fellow brothers, as well as superiors. They are also responsible for the formation of novices. The „Elders” were to be respected and those of venerable age were dispensed from certain duties and norms of the Monastic Rule. Summarizing we can say that the role of the „Elders” in the Community was very important from all points of view.

The article presents the importance attributed to the term “the elders of Israel” by biblical authors. Exegesis of the relevant passages reveals in this expression some kind of social elite, separated from the rest of the common crowd, which, however, does not undertake any initiatives on its own, remaining absolutely faithful to the leader of the people and supporting him in action for the good of the community. Elected by the congregation for the purpose of organizing life within the community they also perform some ritual functions. As representatives of a sinful people before God, on behalf of that people “the elders of Israel” beg forgiveness for transgressions and by unquestionable obedience become guarantors of Israel’s courage in difficult circumstances. In situations of rebellion they also, as guardians of God’s law, manifest the value of all of God’s commandments. As participants of exceptional events they become a link between the secular community and the holiness of God.Keywords

Population aging has become an increasingly severe problem in recent years. Based on the diversity of the mobile functions, and the advanced mobile technology, the elders might use the modern mobile to get the conveniences of the elder’s living. In our study, 34 senior citizens in the UK, and 56 persons in Taiwan, students of the Evergreen Elder University, answered the questions. The compared results showed that the factor of personal or family dependence and technology dependence are dominant in the UK, but the factors of personal or family dependence and social dependence are dominant in Taiwan. Elders’ education will be a hot topic of education because of the increasing population of elders. The key variables, i.e. demographic, social, psychological, and technological ones, are satisfied to be the growth of elders’ education in many developed and developing countries. Based on the duties and resources of the religions and universities, a diversity of elders’ education can be expected.

This article provides an explanation of the meaning of the word “elder” (starets) used in reference to the monks of the Optina Monastery on the basis of the Tradition of the Orthodox Church as a word understood not in the sense of physical age, but in the sense of perfect spiritual and moral growth. The article also shows the worldview of the Russian Intelligence of the 19th century and the benevolent influence the Elders of the Optina Monastery had on it.

Monastery w Rosji w XIX–stym wieku miały bardzo duży wpływ na naród. Jednym z takich monasterów był właśnie wtedy Kozielski Monaster Wprowadzenia Matki Bożej do Świątyni zwany Pustelnią Optyńską. Był to taki ośrodek duchowy, do którego przybywali pielgrzymi nie tylko z prostego ludu. Częstymi gośćmi w monasterze byli rosyjscy filozofowie i pisarze. Duchowe pożywienie, jakie otrzymywali od mnichów wpływało na ich twórczość i życiowe dążenia. Starcy z Pustelni Optyńskiej stawali się dla nich duchowymi przewodnikami i moralnymi autorytetami, a nawet twórczą inspiracją. Twórcami rosyjskiej kultury tego okresu mającymi kontakt z Pustelnią Optyńską byli m.in. Iwan Kirejewski, Nikołaj Gogol, Fiodor Dostojewski i Konstantin Leontjew. Żywe kontakty ze starcami z Pustelni Optyńskiej otwierały w filozofach i pisarzach pokłady głębokiej duchowości, podtrzymujące ich siły do moralnego przeobrażenia nie tylko własnej osoby, ale i całego społeczeństwa.
Monasteries in nineteenth century Russia had a major influence on the nation. One such example was the Monastery of the Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple in Kozelsk, which is also known as the Optina Monastery. The pilgrims who travelled to this spiritual centre were not only common people. Russian philosophers and writers were also guests at the monastery on several occasions. The spiritual nourishment which they received from the monks influenced their creativity and life aspirations. The Elders of the Optina Monastery became for them spiritual guides and moral authorities, and even creative inspiration. The creators of Russian culture at that time, who were in contact with the Optina Monastery include, Ivan Kireyevsky, Nikolai Gogol, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Konstantin Leontyev. Personal contact with the Elders of the Optina Monastery contributed to the these philosophers’ deeply spiritual views, which sustained their strength for the moral transformation not only of their own person, but also of the whole of society.

W niniejszym artykule została zwrócona uwaga na liczne dylematy, które towarzyszą współczesnej rodzinie, która nadal, pomimo wielu przemian strukturalno-funkcjonalnych, realizuje spory zakres zobowiązań w ramach niepisanego kodeksu moralnego nakazującego wzajemne świadczenie różnych usług i form wsparcia. W pierwszej części artykułu została przybliżona istota solidarności rodzinnej, w części drugiej – główne zasady, na których się ona opiera. W części trzeciej przedstawione zostały dylematy związane z realizacją zasad solidarności rodzinnej wobec najstarszego pokolenia w rodzinie. W części czwartej artykułu przedstawiono dylematy związane z realizacją zasad solidarności rodzinnej wobec młodego pokolenia w rodzinie.
This article draws attention to the many dilemmas that arise in the modern family; despite many structural and functional changes, the family continues to face a large range of obligations under an unwritten moral code that requires the mutual provision of various services and forms of support. The first part of the article discusses the essence of family solidarity, while the second part considers the main principles on which this solidarity is based. The third part presents dilemmas connected with implementing principles of family solidarity in regard to the eldest generation in the family, and the fourth part covers dilemmas related to implementing principles of family solidarity in regard to the young generation in the family.

W artykule poruszono tematykę związaną z rolą miejskiego transportu publicznego w kształtowaniu oblicza miasta przyjaznego osobom starszym, 65 wieku i więcej. Analizowano miejsce transportu publicznego w różnych programach oceny miast, jako przyjaznych osobą starszym. Światowa Organizacja Zdrowia (WHO) wymieniła Transport, jako jeden z 8 obszarów funkcjonowania miasta przyjaznego osobom starszym. W pracy przeprowadzono analizę roli miejskiego systemu transportowego w istniejących programach oceny jakości życia w mieście. Omówiono znaczenie takich kryteriów jak dostępność transportu a w tym m.in. znaczenie odległości do przystanku oraz parametry konstrukcyjne pojazdów ułatwiające korzystanie z nich przez osoby starsze. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych analiz materiałów opisujących znaczenie różnych czynników w kształtowaniu miasta przyjaznego osobom starszym można stwierdzić, że zalecenia określone w 2001 roku przez Światową Organizację Zdrowia (WHO) w istotnym stopniu uwzględniają rolę transportu publicznego oraz najpełniej wskazują, jakie działania należy podejmować w poprawianiu dostępności tej formy przemieszczania się na terenie miasta nie tylko osobom starszym.
The article discusses the role of urban public transport in shaping of an age-friendly city for older people, 65 years and over. The World Health Organization (WHO) has named transport as one of the 8 key areas for the functioning of an age-friendly city. The paper analyzes the role of the urban transport system in the existing programs of assessing the quality of life in the city. It also examines the importance of such criteria as accessibility of transport, including the significance of the distance to the bus stop and the vehicles’ constructional parameters which facilitate their use by the elderly. Basing on the analysis of the various factors that contribute to the creation of an age-friendly city, the paper argues that the 2001 recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) make an important contribution to the role of urban public transport and show which measures should be taken to improve its accessibility to senior citizen as well as other age groups.

The Vulnerable Elders Survey (VES-13) is a simple function based frailty screening tool that can be also administered by the nonclinical personnel within 5 minutes and has been validated in the out- and in patient clinic and acute medical care settings. The aim of the study was to validate theaccuracy of the VES-13 screening method for predicting the frailty syndrome based on a CGA in polish surgical patients. Material and methods. We included prospectively 106 consecutive patients ≥65, that qualify for abdominal surgery (both due to oncological and benign reasons), at the tertiary referral hospital.We evaluated the diagnostic performance of VES-13 score comparing to the results from the CGA, accepted as the gold standard for identifying at risk frail elderly patients. Results. The prevalence of frailty as diagnosed by CGA was 59.4%. There was significantly higher number of frail patients in the oncological group (78% vs. 31%; p<0.01). According to the frailty screening methods, the frailty prevalence was 45.3%. The VES-13 score had a 60% sensitivity and 78% specificity in detecting frailty syndrome. The positive and negative predictive value was 81% and 57%, respectively. The overall predictive capacity was intermediate (AUC=0.69) Conclusions. At present, the VES-13 screening tool for older patients cannot replace the comprehensive geriatric assessment; this is due to the insufficient discriminative power to select patients for further assessment. It might be helpful in a busy clinical practice and in facilities that do not have trained personal for geriatric assessment.

The folk culture from the turn of the 20th century was founded on the mythical paradigm. Its specific feature was an opposition between the self and the other. It had ambivalent influence on those people and places which, due to actual or perceptual reasons, were placed on the margin of the mainstream of life. This includes, among others, the elders. On the one hand, they were treated by the community with reluctance, or even aggression, because of their decrepitude. On the other hand, they were respected as guards of traditions, and intermediaries with the supernatural, who possessed a portion of its potential.

Population aging decreases amount of aggregate labor force. Nowadays it is seen as a one of the most important socio-economical issues, that endanger sustainability of welfare state. There are two reasons of that decrease. First, is shrinking productive-age population, and second - raising share of older cohorts, that has relatively lower activity rate. The article is about the situation on the labor market of people at pre-retirement age. Low activity rate of that group is a well known problem, but its causes are still insufficiently researched. Aim of the article is to diagnose the determinants of low economic activity among people at preretirement age. The statement of the crucial factors, that excludes this group from the labor market, was identified basing on the broad literature studies. There are two kinds of forces, that limit activity rate among elders. First of them “push out” from the labour market. That is: negative attitudes and discrimination because of old age, public over-intervention in the field of anti-discrimination programs, economics of corporate employment policy and also labour market policy aimed at deactivation of older workers. The second is “pull into” inactivity. The point is, that institutional settings in the field of social security system discourage lengthening professional activity.
Proces demograficznego starzenia ogranicza zasób siły roboczej w gospodarce. Współcześnie jest to jeden z najważniejszych problemów społeczno-ekonomicznych, który zagraża stabilności państwa opiekuńczego. Wyróżnić można dwa zasadnicze powody tego ograniczenia. Pierwszy z nich to kurczenie się populacji w wieku produkcyjnym, a drugi to starzenie się zasobów pracy, a tym samym wzrost udziału starszych grup charakteryzujących się niższą aktywnością zawodową. Przedmiotem zainteresowania w niniejszym artykule jest sytuacja na rynku pracy osób w wieku przedemerytalnym. Niska aktywność zawodowa tej zbiorowości to problem powszechnie znany, jego powody nie są jednak dostatecznie rozpoznane. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest diagnoza uwarunkowań tego problemu. Na podstawie badań literaturowych określone zostały główne czynniki, które wykluczają osoby w wieku przedemerytalnym z rynku pracy. Wyróżniono dwie siły, których skomasowane oddziaływanie ogranicza aktywność zawodową tej zbiorowości. Pierwsza z tych sił „wypycha” osoby starsze z rynku pracy. Mowa tutaj przede wszystkim o negatywnych postawach i dyskryminacji ze względu na podeszły wiek, zbyt dużej ingerencji państwa w ochronę praw osób starszych na rynku pracy, ekonomice polityki kadrowej przedsiębiorstw oraz polityce rynku pracy nastawionej na dezaktywizacje starszych pracowników. Druga z omawianych sił „wciąga” osoby starsze w bierność zawodową. Chodzi tutaj głównie o rozwiązania instytucjonalno- prawne sytemu zabezpieczenia emerytalnego, które zniechęcają do wydłużania aktywności zawodowej.

Artykuł kontynuuje problematykę polityki wobec osób starszych uczestniczących w ruchu drogowym, zaprezentowaną w numerze 4-2015 niniejszego kwartalnika. W odniesieniu do pojawiających się postulatów obowiązkowych regularnych badań lekarskich starszych kierowców oraz poddawaniu ich innym testom weryfikującym zdolność do prowadzenia pojazdów, zaprezentowano wyniki badań oraz doświadczenia wielu krajów w tym zakresie. Szczególnie mocno podkreślono także rolę edukacji zarówno osób starszych, jak i całego społeczeństwa w zapewnieniu samodzielności, mobilności i bezpieczeństwa seniorów w ruchu drogowym oraz przedstawiono przykłady dobrych praktyk w tym obszarze.
Article continues on the problems of the policy towards the elderly involved in the road traffic, presented in the 4-2015 issue of this quarterly With regard to the emerging demands of compulsory regular medical examinations of older drivers and subjecting them to other tests verifying the capability to drive, the results have been presented of the research and the experiences of many countries in this regard. The role of education for the elderly, as well as the whole society has particularly been underlined in ensuring independence, mobility and security of seniors in the road traffic and the good examples of practice in this area have been presented.
