Opis:
Introduction: Family is the basic institution providing informal care to elderly and disabled individuals. Purpose: To present care situations encountered by persons providing home care to an elder, the caregivers’ needs for support and the factors determining their satisfaction with the care they provide. Materials and methods: The study was conducted at the Geriatric Ward of the Hospital of the Ministry of Interior in Bialystok among 105 home caregivers of the elderly. A diagnostics survey was based on an original survey questionnaire and the COPE Index. Functional capacity in the elderly (N=100) was determined based on the Barthel ADL (activities' in daily living) Index and the category of nursing care (category, I-III). The analysis covered also the pressure sore risk assessment (the Norton Scale). Results: The analysis based on the Barthel ADL Index showed that over 30.0% of the elderly individuals were given up to 40 points in the nursing assessment (seriously disabled). Almost all patients – 97.0% qualified to the 3rd category of nursing care. 64.0% of the elderly had an increased risk of pressure sore development (the Norton Scale). The problems connected with providing home care listed by caregivers included the lack of time, disability of the elder and locomotion difficulties. The analysis based on the Cope Index showed a positive relationship between the caregiver’s age (r=0.216), education (r=0.196), the distance from the elder’s home (r=0.216), the quality of received support (r=0.554), and the satisfaction in the care provided. Conclusions: Caregivers reported the need for different forms of support. Higher education, longer distance from home and the quality of received support were significantly associated with higher satisfaction with caregiving.

In job education of professionals providing care for older persons in the social care institutions (ComPro project)Continuous in-job education plays a meaningful role in the update of professional knowledge and skills needed to provide high quality  services. The positive attitude to constant education is currently perceived as a crucial characteristic of a worker which allows for development of professional career. Moreover, the educational policy builds strength of an institution at the labor market. The following paper presents the concept of continuous in-job education of professionals providing care for elderly people in social care institutions in Poland. It promotes the idea of a new profession of coordinator of in-job education – a person responsible for educational needs assessment and training plan development in Polish social care facilities. On top of this, the article provides the outline of a systematic approach to strategy of professionals’ in-job education including: educational needs diagnosis, structured training plan, training implementation and outcomes evaluation. The paper was written in the frames of the ComPro project.

Opis:
Background The success of geriatric care requires cooperation with the patient’s relatives. This study aims to compare the perspectives of elderly patients and their caregivers on functional efficiency, as measured by the Edmonton Frail Scale. By examining the discrepancies in these assessments, we hope to better understand perceptions of frailty-related functional limitations and improve the personalized approaches in geriatric care. Material and methods This cross-sectional study enrolled a sample of hospitalized patients, based on availability of researchers. Exclusion criteria involved: age < 65, communication barriers, manual disability, exacerbation of a chronic disease or acute condition, no contact to the caregiver, lack of consent. The McNemar-Bowker test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to compare patients’ and their caregivers’ responses. Results Forty five patients were enrolled. The answers concerning cognitive functions, laundry, and functional performance were statistically different (P < 0.001). Whereas after applying the Holm-Bonferroni method for multiple testing only the judgment of cognitive functions remained statistically different. Other domains showed no statistical differences. Conclusions Our results may in general confirm the credibility of caregivers’ perspective in the patients’ functional assessment.

Opis:
The article focuses on personal experiences, feelings and needs related to being an informal caregiver of an elderly person. It uses the existing data as well as data collected by the author in 2019 (targeted selection of informal caregivers for elderly persons; 159 open interviews with a checklist). It was found, among other things, that most informal carers are kinship carers, women, who are more likely to have negative – rather than positive – experiences and feelings. Most of all, caregivers need time, including time to rest, and support.
