RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to understand the elderly care policies approved in Brazil and to identify how the epidemiological profile of the population, especially the elderly is included in the curriculum and activities of the various undergraduate programs in the health area of UNESC. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The question is whether curricular guidelines and institutions address this need. It is a collective production, with a qualitative approach, based on a documentary analysis of the legislation and policies of the elderly in Brazil. Likewise, the documentary analysis of the Curriculum Guidelines of UNESC undergraduate programs was carried out as well as a survey of image records of activities carried out with seniors to illustrate some projects and actions developed. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The analysis related to the subject described is based, on the one hand, on the study of the literature related to the issues discussed (theoretical aspect of the publication) and, on the other hand, on the results of the analysis of public policies, curricular guidelines, course contents and the relevance of practical actions to the studied subject. RESEARCH RESULTS: The results of the research indicate that in the scope of the University the graduate courses in the health area began to rediscover the professional formation from the principles of SUS and the national and regional epidemiological aspects, including the needs of the elderly, mainly from the approval of the attention to the elderly. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The university has to tease more and more on the subject with its teachers, giving those tools for teaching gerontology and geriatrics and the need for a qualified formation.

The article aims to assess the demand for the places in social homes for the elderly among persons aged 75+ up to the year 2035. To this end, the proportion of the disabled in the selected subpopulation is estimated to approximate the demand for the beds. The findings indicate that a significant increase in the demand for institutional support is likely, driven by the growing subpopulation of older persons in Poland.

Opis:
The presented article concerns the phenomenon of infantilization of the elderly in many areas of everyday by their family carers. Infantilization means treating an adult like a child. In the sphere of language, this phenomenon is called baby-talk. Often infantilization of the elderly concerns the sphere of communication. The author of the article shows that not only during conversations they are treated as children. Family carers showed signs of infantilization, referring to the care and nursing of the elderly under their care. This article is an excerpt from a broader study of family carers for the elderly. The study was conducted with 20 carers of the elderly using the unstructured interview method in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. The analysis of the research material was performed using the MAXQDA software. The result of a broad analysis is the research report presented in this study, which shows that infantilization is multidimensional and nonconscious. It results from the lack of preparation of the family carers for the role of a caregiver. Due to their insufficient knowledge about looking after an old person, the careres are forced to base their knowledge on their experience as parents.

Opis:
The issue of the elderly people’s rights has been discussed more and more often in the broader context of human rights. There is much evidence from social life that these rights are not being respected to the extent they should be. Securing and respecting the rights of older the elderly is becoming a challenge for state authorities that uphold human rights and create the directions of social policy for the rights protection. It is especially important as the elderly people due to their age, health status, weakened social position, rarely become advocates of their own interests. They are victims of an unobvious and often invisible process of marginalization and self-exclusion from an active social life. The aim of this article is to sketch the phenomenon of the marginalization of the elderly in the context of mechanisms related to their functioning on the one hand, and age, and on the other to social attitudes towards seniors. There are presented the elderly people’s rights and basic conditions for the rights to be respected..

In contemporary healthcare architecture the tendency of breaking the institutionalization of hospitals are observed, moreover, the needs of patients are the basis for design as patient-centred design. State of art related to healing environment gives the basis for increasing the role of architectural solutions, which give positive support to the patient’s psychosocial condition in treatment process.
Stan badań w zakresie środowiska fizycznego szpitali daje podstawę do zwiększenia roli rozwiązań architektonicznych korzystnie wpływających na stan psychofizyczny pacjenta w procesie leczenia.

The main aim of this study is to consider and present pedagogy students’ attitudes towards the elderly. The results presented herein were collected in a pilot project. The survey was conducted among 66 pedagogy students; a questionnaire and the semantic differential method were used as the research tools. The results revealed positive attitudes among the students towards the elderly. However, a conclusion was drawn that pedagogy students should be allowed to take part in activities involving the elderly. Students’s awareness of their own attitudes might allow them to understand elderly people’s behavior. A proper understanding of the aging process and old age can create a chance for better communication and inter-generational cooperation. It is also an inspiration for understanding their own aging process.

Opis:
The world is facing a series of changes that will modify the way we envisage transport planning in our cities. Demographic ageing as a consequence of higher life expectancy and lower fertility rates is a world-wide phenomenon. While ageing is indeed a triumph of scientific progress and increasing longevity is perceived as one of humanity’s greatest achievements, the transition in society needs to be managed. In the urban context, any increase in age, health, and economic conditions determines one’s ability to enjoy the urban milieu and the so-called economies of urbanisation (advantages gained from an urban location, e.g., proximity to a market, labour supply, good communications, and financial and commercial services) longer. As there are more and more elderly people in cities, urban mobility becomes crucial in making the urban environment more inclusive. In order to provide suitable policy guidelines, it is, therefore, necessary to investigate and understand senior traveller behaviour.   In this study, we investigate urban travel characteristics of people aged 65 years and over living in the city of Genoa (one of the cities with the largest population of the elderly in the EU). By utilising a structured questionnaire, the paper explores the satisfaction and motivations of approx. 600 elderly public transport users in the city. In particular, exploratory factor analysis has been used to determine the key dimensions of the satisfaction and mobility motivations, and subsequently to use them to investigate the cost sensitivity of elderly people.

The European project entitled "Integrating adults and the elderly towards a Europe of knowledge", coordinated by the University of Almería, within the actions of "Grundtvig learning partnerships for adult education", has carried out the assessment of an educational program for people over 55 years in five countries. The aim of the learning partnership was “to encourage the development of innovative practices in education of older people and their transfer between countries”. Methods: Some of the following teaching tools and methods were used to promote intercultural communication skills: simulation activities, followed by reflective discussion and/or written analysis; guided group activities; local visits to contact people from other countries; ethnographic projects. Results: The courses provide knowledge and understanding about culture, institutions and different ways of life in diverse communities, and encourage reflection about their own cultural behaviour, practices and attitudes, as well as those of others. Old people enhance communication in their community, by means of meetings in which they talk about their common concerns. This can help the elderly to overcome problems and reduce feelings of loneliness. The courses also help old people acquire new knowledge and skills in a rapidly changing world. Conclusions: Participants’ motivation increased as the sessions were developed, since the contents of the classes agreed with their own interests, with a constant widening of knowledge. Everybody had an active role in the discussions. This training has shown some aspects about ageing, such as the removal of the image of  the idle retired person; at the same time it promotes active retirement, intergenerational relationships and independence, and improves social and personal skills

In the next part I focus on what the verses of the Quran say about old age, and how these verses were interpreted by Muslim scholars. The Quran instructs primarily being a good and caring in relation to old parents, presenting, among others, the stories of the prophets who treated their parents in a very noble and merciful way. I also focus on numerious hadiths discussing various issues related to old age - calling for showing respect to every older man, regardless of his or her race, religion or social origin. In the final passages I draw attention to some elements of Islamic etiquette and Sharia referring to aging and the elderly.

Population ageing is one of the most important problems of the 21st century economy. Similarly, the subject of creating a living space for the elderly, taking into consideration their specific needs resulting from functional disability in the context of the ever growing population of elderly people is one of the key challenges that modern architecture has to face. The aim of the article is to present the physical environment of geriatric care facilities as a system of functional and behavioural stimuli in the context of ergonomic as well as social solutions, which may have influence on the economic development – by stimulating the activity of the elderly, as well as on the development of a number of disciplines connected with old age. It has been assumed that there exists a number of spatial determinants which may become elements supporting the elderly as well as the people involved in providing care for them. Therefore it is necessary to improve the standard of technical equipment and to modernize the architectural space targeted at the elderly.

The aim of this study is to identify the scale of Polish emigration of elderly residents in the twenty-first century. At the outset presented in the literature developed concepts explaining the mechanisms of migration of seniors. Analyzing the actual movement of seniors, the focus was mostly on the scale of emigration, and the main directions of movements. The analysis was based on data on permanent emigration from the country in the years 2002-2013 are available on the Central Statistical Office. The result of the analysis indicate that older Poles are small, relatively stable in recent years, the proportion of immigrants. Migrants seniors are most often those who are married, characterized by a low level of education.

Introduction: Aging is accompanied by several physiological and psychological changes in the organism of an individual (e.g., decreased sense of taste and smell, disruption of satiety, depression), which affect the nutritional intake. Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective study is to highlight the nutritional habits of elderly people. Materials and methods: Extensive review of the recent literature in electronic databases (Pub med, Google scholar) and journals. Exclusion criterion for the articles was the language than the Greek and English. Results: The increase life expectancy is important to be accompanied by physical and mental health, quality of life and, where possible, from participation in social, economic, cultural and spiritual life. Adopting healthy dietary patterns, combined with daily physical activity, and factors such as avoiding smoking, could help considerably in reaching these goals. The physical and psychological changes occurring during aging may adversely affect nutritional status. Instead, a proper diet can positively influence the physical and emotional state of elderly people. Conclusions: Diet and generally nutrition habits of the elderly play an important role in their health.

We conducted a retrospective analysis of medical data of 274 patients admitted to 3rd Department of General Surgery in Cracow between January 2011 and December 2013 due to AA. The elderly group comprised 23 patients aged 65 and above and the non-elderly group consisted of 251 patients. Results. The groups did not differ in symptoms and their duration, type of surgery and its duration. However, time from admission to ED to the beginning of the procedure was significantly lower in the elderly group (575.56 vs 858.9 min; p=0.03). The elderly had longer hospital stay (6.08 vs 4.69 days; p=0.004). In the elderly group the perforation rate was close to reaching statistical significance (26.1% vs 12.4%; p=0.06). No mortality was noted in both groups and morbidity was slightly higher in elderly group (17.4% vs 10%; p=0.26). Conclusions. There was no difference in the clinical presentation between elderly and non-elderly patients group. However, elderly patients presented with a more progressed inflammation of the appendix. The hospital stay was longer in the elderly group, without any mortality and with higher rate of morbidity in this group. The length of the preoperative phase was significantly shorter, confirming the awareness of importance of time in the elderly patients with acute abdomen.

Opis:
Pandemics affect millions of people and cause many deaths worldwide. Undoubtedly, the most affected vulnerable group in the epidemic has been the elderly. The elderly population is a very heterogeneous population with various combinations of geriatric syndromes, comorbidities, and disabilities. According to the WHO report, 89% of the mortality in the COVID-19 virus is seen in individuals aged 65 and over, called the elderly. For older people, the risk of transmission is higher due to the health conditions associated with aging. The weak immune system in the elderly and the advanced state of chronic diseases can cause COVID-19 disease to be experienced more severely. The social isolation measure of the elderly during the COVID-19 process has caused physiological, physical and psychological problems. At the same time, due to the social isolation measure, the routine treatment plans of the elderly were disrupted and they were deprived of the necessary treatment. The aim of this study is to address the physiological, physical and psychological problems experienced by the elderly during the pandemic process and to determine the effects of the pandemic on the elderly.

Opis:
The decision to take responsibility for the care of seniors is largely conditioned by social and cultural factors. In the article, the correlation between collectivism/individualism and taking care of the elderly is described with the example of selected countries. The second part of the article is the analysis of social and cultural factors that have an impact on Poles’ opinions about institutional care and family obligations to elders. In the third part, new trends and social changes that will affect decisions regarding the care of the elderly are presented. There are clear differences between countries with a collectivist culture (where elderly care is the responsibility of family members), and the countries that value individualism (where institutional care is popular). In Poland, there is still social pressure to take care of older family members without institutional support, but the demographic situation and migration will change this attitude and popularize nonfamilial care.

Background. Studies of people aged 50+ undertaking physical activity show the possibility to delay and mitigate the ailments associated with the aging process. The aim of this study was to present the physioprophylaxis of the aging process in people aged 50 and above from the Lublin Voivodeship in Poland and the Ternopil region in Ukraine through physical activity, taking into account health condition, regularity of check-ups, sources of knowledge, forms of activity, age and the level of education. Material and methods. The study group involved 121 people from the Lublin Voivodeship and 102 people from the Ternopil region. A questionnaire designed by the authors was used in the study. Results. In the group of respondents from the Lublin Voivodeship, younger age was correlated with more frequent participation in power walks, dancing, Nordic walking, jogging, active tourism as well as strength and flexibility training (p<0.05). Better health condition was observed in those individuals who reported more frequent power walks, cycling, working on the plot, Nordic walking, active tourism and strength training (p<0.05). Statistically significant regularity of check-ups was reported only in individuals who practiced cycling (p<0.05). No correlations between these variables were reported in the study group from Ternopil (p>0.05). Conclusions. The analysis of the obtained data showed that study participants from Poland more often engage in physical activity and perceive their health condition as good more frequently than the respondents from Ukraine. Age and health status were the factors influencing the frequency and choice of physical activity forms undertaken by the respondents.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. For many years, Europe has been struggling with the problem of an aging society. It is obvious that everyone would like to live longer while retaining good psycho-physical health and social activity. This, however, is influenced by many factors, such as health, which may be a form of limitation in everyday life or in performing social roles in accordance with the norms. Objective. The aim of the study was to analyze the use of scales for functional assessment of basic and complex daily living activities in individuals aged 80+ in various EU countries. Materials and method. Potentially essential articles were obtained through review and analysis of the PUBMED (MEDLINE) database by entering the following keywords: functional activities of daily living, ADL, IADL, complex activities of daily living, basic activities of daily living. Article selection was based on the following inclusion criteria set by the authors and the appointed Advisory Board. Results. Assessment of independence and fitness of elderly persons in the area of basic and complex activities of daily living provides information on the quality of life of senior individuals. Analysis of research data used for comparing functional independence of senior persons on the basis of ADL and IADL scales is difficult due to the discrepancies, which may be confusing for researchers studying this area. Conclusions. The use of different methodologies for assessing functional fitness of elderly individuals makes it difficult to interpret, compare and practically apply the outcomes. Standardization of research methods used for assessment of basic and complex daily living activities in 80+ persons would enable comparing the obtained data in an interdisciplinary perspective.

Opis:
Background. Researchers often discuss the subject of physical activity (PA) of the elderly in theoretical terms, showing, for example, the protective mechanisms of PA for the body, beneficial effects for health and aging, as well as the principles of effective health training. According to the WHO and EU, few elderly people are physically active. This study aimed to investigate the level of PA of the surveyed elderly people at the present time, compared to when they were younger. Potential limitations in PA of the respondents and their knowledge about the dangers of hypokinesia were also investigated. Material and methods. This study assessed 217 people, aged 60-85, living in the northern part of the Lublin Province, Poland. It used an original interview questionnaire. Results. Systematic PA performed by respondents earlier in life involved mainly household and backyard activities, professional work, and participation in physical education lessons. The currently most frequent activities were found to be walking (75.6%) and gardening (66.4%). Women much more often than men participated and reported their willingness to be active in organized PA. Various limitations prevented respondents from being physically active. The greatest number of respondents reported disability, physical weakness, kinesiophobia, and multiple diseases (34.6%) as the main barrier, followed by lack of skills to organize physical exercises (27.7%). Concerning threats of hypokinesia, respondents most often indicated obesity, diseases of the musculoskeletal system, and arterial hypertension. Conclusions. The level of PA of the surveyed elderly people, limitations preventing PA, and low level of knowledge about the delayed consequences of hypokinesia suggests a need for seniors’ health education in physioprophylaxis.
Wprowadzenie. Według WHO i UE niewiele osób starszych jest aktywnych fizycznie. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono wśród 217 osób w wieku 60-85 lat zamieszkałych na terenie północnej część województwa lubelskiego, Polska. Wykorzystano w nich autorski kwestionariusz wywiadu. Wyniki. Kobiety znacznie częściej niż mężczyźni uczestniczą i zgłaszają chęć aktywności w zorganizowanych zajęciach ruchowych. Wśród barier uniemożliwiających ankietowanym aktywność fizyczną najwięcej osób zadeklarowało własną niepełnosprawność, słabość fizyczną, kinezjofobię, wielochorobowość (34,6%). W dalszej kolejności deklarowano brak umiejętności do zorganizowania ćwiczeń fizycznych (27,7%). Wśród zagrożeń hipokinezji badani wskazywali najczęściej: otyłość, choroby narządu ruchu i nadciśnienie tętnicze. Wnioski. Aktywność fizyczna w życiu badanych seniorów, bariery uniemożliwiające podejmowanie aktywności fizycznej i niski poziom wiedzy na temat odroczonych konsekwencji hipokinezji sugerują potrzebę edukacji zdrowotnej seniorów z fizjoprofilaktyki.

Systematic physical activity leads to some physical and psychological benefits for the body, and therefore, it is considered to be best practice in the prevention of public health. This statement is particularly important in the case of the elderly, as regular, individually-designed exercises, give way to an active lifestyle, which is important in the light of the increasing number of the elderly in Poland. The study aimed to evaluate physical activity of University of the Third Age students. The research material consisted of 73 people aged 60–74. Utilized in the study was a diagnostic survey method, with a specially-designed survey questionnaire constituted of 20 questions referring to pro-health lifestyle and physical activity of the subjected group. Based on the results analysis, it was concluded that the subjected elderly lead a healthy lifestyle and systematically undertake physical activity, which seems to be a very positive tendency.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review is to present a broader scope on osteoporosis – both as a medical problem and as a major social burden. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease, characterized by low bone mass, leading to increased bone fragility and fractures. It does not only lead to major medical expenses, lower health-related quality-of-life but also strains the population with significant social burden. As modern science is intensively exploring the problem of osteoporosis, new research articles expanding our knowledge on this disease come out weekly. This growing body of research calls for an up-to-date review of the existing state of knowledge on osteoporosis. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: This manuscript presents and overview on osteoporosis and associated problems such as fractures in the following order (1) Etiology and pathogenesis of osteoporosis, (2) Osteoporosis risk factors, (3) Epidemiology of osteoporosis, (4) Aging of the Polish population, (5) Clinical consequences of osteoporosis, (6) Criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Caucasian women after menopause, (7) Morbidity and mortality associated with osteoporotic fractures, (8) Risk factors related to the collapse of the condition of osteoporotic patients, (9) Bone fragility and falls, (10) Recognizing osteoporosis, (11) Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, (12) Cost of treating fractures, (13) Fracture liaison service, (14) Senior care, (15) Purpose of modern geriatrics, (16) Social inequalities and osteoporosis. RESEARCH RESULTS: The two major determinants of risk in the development of osteoporosis are peak bone mass and rate of bone loss. These two determinants are influenced by a number of genetic (non-modifiable) and environmental (partly modifiable, and modifiable) factors. Osteoporosis is becoming increasingly prevalent with the aging of the world population. Worldwide, more than 200 million people are suffering from osteoporosis, and 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men over 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. About 5% of falls result in fractures, half of which are proximal femur fractures. Out of all falls leading to fractures, 10‑25% result in injury or requirement of specialized medical care. Falls are one of the main causes of disability and the fifth most common cause of death in people over 75 years of age. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: This review provides a concise overview om osteoporosis as a linked medical and social problem. It also identified a number of knowledge gaps necessary to fill in order to progress our knowledge on osteoporosis diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Understanding patients’ preferences and needs will allow to align them with appropriate service models which are likely to optimize patient outcomes.

This paper is a compilation of facts about women who shone in their youth either for their research, their works of art, or their social and political activities, and who remained active in their later years, when they became what are commonly called senior citizens. It was during these years that these brilliant women managed to crystallise and consolidate the work they had done all of their life, bringing about changes in scientific, artistic, cultural and social fields, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge for future generations. A small host of women representing different disciplines has been chosen here, and all of these women were active in their later life. Many others who could have been included will not be found, not only because there is not enough space here to mention all of them here, but also because there is a lack of sources dealing with the millions of senior heroines who are anonymous; elderly women who play a vital role in the development of humanity when they pass on knowledge and values; women who remain active in their later years and who only retire the day they die

Due to recorded growth both in living standards and latest researches in medicine, proportion of people in old age has significantly improved all over the world. Although old age people are several percent of the entire society, number of surgeries within the group does not exceed 40%. Also risk of malignant neoplasms among old age people, significantly grows. Malignant neoplasm of colon appears to be most visible problem in group of people in age over 75 years old. The aim of the study was a retrospective analysis of results in treatment of the sick over 75 years old, suffering from Malignant neoplasm of colon. Therapy was performed in the I Unit of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology in Provinical Hospital in Jelenia Góra. Material and methods. Subject to analysis were 63 patients that went under operations in years from 2006 to 2010 due to the colorectal cancer, who have been divided now into two groups. First group included 49 patients treated as per schedule, and the second stood for 14, who required urgent treatment. Reference group has involved 20 younger patients, treated in urgent and scheduled courses, due to the colon cancer. There are no contradictions to emergencies and scheduled surgeries for patients in advanced years, suffering from colon cancer. Complications after colon cancer emergencies are far more frequent than in case of scheduled surgeries. Death rates among patients over 75 years old are far more frequent after emergencies than after scheduled surgeries. Concomitant diseases occur the same frequent during emergenices as during scheduled operations. During emergencies, it was left side of the colon that occured to be infected with cancer more frequent. Conclusions. There is no significant diversity in hospitalization time frames after emergencies and scheduled surgeries. Dangerous surgical complications within group of older patients, those after emergencies and scheduled surgeries too, are far more frequent in comparison to the reference group.

The process of population ageing is observed not only in Poland but also in other European countries. Physiological processes of ageing  reduces the functional capacity. In particular, associated diseases, progressive weakness and failure of the motor system increases the risk of collapse in seniors. Dangerous consequences of falls, inter alia, injuries, can often cause death, what justifies its classification as a so-called geriatric giant. Health and psychosocial consequences of falls should be noted. Therefore, there is a great need for induction of preventive measures. Many results of studies constantly show, that an effective intervention in preventing falls in seniors should include, first and foremost, multidirectional rehabilitation, which aims to improve balance and increase postural strength muscle. In addition, prevention should include: patient education, pharmacotherapy prescribed by a medical specialist, eyesight improvement, elimination of potential risks surrounding the patient. The introduction of multi-directional prevention of falls can reduce the risk of their occurrence up to 50%

Over the last decades, a trend of population aging has been observed in Poland and across the world. It is a result of extended lifespan, increased quality of life and higher standards of health care. The gradually growing group of the elderly in Poland results in a steadily increasing significance of this consumer market. Services, in particular e-services, may play a pivotal role in the life of the elderly, helping them to better function in the society and satisfy their basic and higher needs. As a results, the group of consumers in question must move from traditional solutions to modern technologies e-services are based on. The objective of the study is to identify the behavior of the elderly (over 60 years old) in the Polish market of e-services. The study is based on secondary resource analysis, questionnaires and the CAWI method. The sample was randomly selected from the panel of users (n = 508). The results of the authors’ own study suggest that the commonly used services are e-trading and e-banking, meant satisfy daily needs more easily. The indicated benefits were, e.g., comfort, saved time and money, easier access to services

Introduction: With the rising number of elderly patients and increasing incidence of colorectal cancer, management of geriatric patients has become the forefront of colorectal surgery. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the short-term surgical outcomes that follow colorectal resection in elderly patients. Materials and methods: A total of 464 patients who underwent surgical resection for colorectal tumor between 2013 and 2017 were included. The patients were divided into a group of the elderly (≥75 years) and the young (<75 years). Clinicopathological data of the patients were reviewed retrospectively. Results: The elderly group constituted 30% of the study population. A greater number of patients in the elderly group underwent Hartmann’s procedure (p = 0.02) and right hemicolectomy (p = 0.029), and younger patients more often received low anterior resection (p = 0.027). The duration of the surgical procedure was shorter in the elderly group (p < 0.01) but they stayed in the hospital one day longer (p = 0.023). Postoperative complications and mortality tended to be higher in seniors (p = 0.088). The younger patients showed a tendency towards a higher rate of distant metastases (p = 0.053). Seniors received fewer preoperative chemoradiation in comparison to the young group (p = 0.014). Conclusion: Older persons constitute one-third of patients treated electively in colorectal departments. Colorectal surgery in geriatric patients is associated with a prolonged hospital stay and a higher potential for complications and mortality.

Demographic changes associated with the aging population mean that surgeons increasingly have contact and make decisions about treating patients from the oldest age groups. The aim of the study was to review the literature concerning the treatment of acute appendicitis in patients over the age of 60 years old. Material and methods. A review of the literature published in the years 2000-2015 has been carried out using the PubMed database. The initial number of results corresponding to the query in English, „appendicitis (MeSH) AND elderly (MeSH)” was 260. Selection based on the titles, abstracts, and eventually whole articles, ultimately resulted in 11 papers concerning the treatment of appendicitis in patients above 60 years of age. Results. Nine papers were retrospective and 2 were prospective. In total, the studies included 82,852 patients. Laparoscopic appendectomy was associated with a lower mortality rate, a smaller number of postoperative complications and a shorter length of hospital stay, which led to it being recommended by most authors. Four of the ten papers demonstrated that the patients who were qualified for laparoscopic surgery had less comorbidity and were in a lower ASA (American Society of Anaesthesiology) category. Antibiotic therapy as an independent method was assessed in one study in a group of elderly people, on a selected group of 26 patients, and its effectiveness was shown to be 70%. Most studies, however, are highly heterogeneous which significantly hindered comparisons. Conclusions. Currently, laparoscopic appendectomy seems to be the treatment of choice in the elderly with acute appendicitis. Antibiotic therapy, as an independent method of treatment of acute appendicitis, cannot currently be recommended. However, further, prospective, and better-designed studies are needed, involving a larger number of patients, and primarily dedicated to the elderly.

Opis:
In recent years, thanks to rapidly developing medicine, it is becoming possible to detect, treat and diagnose diseases that for many decades were considered incurable. Consequently, we are dealing with a significant increase in life expectancy and a rapid increase in the number of the elderly in the society in recent years. As the statistics show, this number will increase even more in the coming years, so there is a need to pay attention to this social group. Elderly people, especially those living alone and suffering from cognitive and memory disorders that accompany Alzheimer's disease, are a group particularly vulnerable to various forms of violence. In Polish literature on the subject and in the media, much attention is paid to the physical, mental and financial form of abuse. Sexual abuse is not mentioned at all in the context of this social group, which does not mean that it does not exist. This situation is often caused by stereotypes according to which, the elderly are asexual and not attractive enough to be victims of sexual violence. This article pays attention to the definitions of sexual abuse against the elderly, the scale of the problem, risk factors for this form of violence or its consequences, including: physiological-somatic, psychological-emotional, sexual and socio-cognitive ones. The last part of the text is devoted to prevention of sexual violence among the elderly.

Opis:
The main objective of this paper is to analyze the informal support for the elderly experiencing problems in everyday life connected with physical, mental or emotional fitness. The analysis covers groups of countries chosen from the participants of SHARE project. The multinomial logit model has been used in order to verify the hypothesis that such problems determine the living arrangements of the elderly. The binomial regression model has been used in order to answer a question if informal support from outside the household obtained by the people experiencing problems in everyday life is determined by the type of the household and by social and demographic characteristics of the individuals receiving the support. In conclusion we state that the occurrence of difficulties in everyday life does not affect the chance of living in a one-person household. For the other types of the households the aforementioned influence turns out to be significant only for selected countries. In all investigated countries, for people experiencing difficulties in everyday life, a significant influence of the type of the household on receiving help from outside the household has been observed. In future research, a closer attention should be paid to elderly people living alone and to incorporating various types of limitations in everyday life separately for men and women. For better explanation of the differences between post-transitional and the other European countries the formal and institutional supports should be introduced.

Introduction. There is a growing number of older people in Poland. This phenomenon results in the need to assess their problems related with functioning in everyday life. This is the first study conducted in Polish society which evaluates the prevalence of disability and limitations in functioning by means of WHODAS 2.0 questionnaire. Objective. Evaluation of the health, functioning and disability of people aged 60–70 years living in south-eastern Poland. Materials and method. The researched material was a randomly- selected sample of 1,000 inhabitants of south-eastern Poland. The study was conducted by use of direct interviews applying the WHODAS 2.0. For the purpose of statistical analysis, measures of descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests of significance were used. Results. Limitations in functioning were reported by 67.00% of participants aged 60–70 years, including 46.20% with a mild disability, 14.50% – moderate, 6.30% – significant and extremely large disability. The highest level of disability occurred in areas related to participation in social life (mean = 20.77), performing activities of daily living (mean = 17.42) and mobility (mean = 17.23). A significantly higher level of disability (p <0.0001)was observed among unmarried people, the elderly and those with a greater number of chronic diseases. Higher level of physical activity was associated with lower disability level in the studied population (p <0.009). Conclusions. Regarding the studied population, it was found that many health problems become worse over the years. The state of health that deteriorates with age causes limitations in daily functioning, which lead to disability, activity limitations and participation in everyday life. The progressive ageing of the Polish population will cause an increasing demand for medical care and on the social services.

Introduction. A factor that conditions the perception of the quality of life (QoL) is having a social network and relationships within it. The quality of life of seniors is assumed to be at a higher level if they are surrounded by those close to them in comparison to those living alone. The aim of the study was to assess differences in the quality of life of elderly rural residents depending on their family status. Materials and method. Due to the random and mixed selection of respondents, the study comprised a group of 588 representatives living in rural areas of Eastern Poland. The differentiated criterion of the groups of senior respondents was their family situation: living with a family or living alone. Assessment of the quality of life was conducted by means of the WHOQoL-bref questionnaire. The Mann-Whitney tests and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to carry out statistical analysis of the data. Results. The respondents who lived with their families differed statistically to a significant extent (p<0.005) from those who lived alone. The former gave a better assessment of the majority of the QoL domains: physical, psychological and social. Obtaining higher mean values for the environmental domain among the respondents living alone (M=14.31) seemed to be an atypical and interesting phenomenon because seniors living with their relatives usually assessed that dimension better than those living alone. Conclusions. The family situation of seniors affected the level of quality of life. Living with their relatives may be expected to be favourable for seniors because it translates into better performance in physical, psychological and social domains. Loneliness, which frequently accompanies old age, leads to the deterioration of the quality of life.

In Europe, the population of people over 60 years old has increased dramatically in the last few decades. Due to the demographic changes, in Poland, the world of marketing seems to discover the purchasing power of the elderly. Seniors become not only the receivers but also the senders of advertising messages. In order to sell a product, ad makers present people who are supposed to be liked, trusted, identified with and finally followed. In a press advertisement, to which an average consumer devotes 1.5 seconds, the picture is of top priority. The present research aims at analyzing the image of elderly women in press advertisements on the basis of their physical appearance, the context of the depicted situation, their clothes, facial expressions, eye-contact, and other visible traits. The survey study was conducted among young people to see the difference in their perception of elderly women in the pictures illustrating press advertisements for different products. The research results show how the positive image of the elderly in advertising can be created.

Introduction: Health is one of the most important and cherished values in the elderly. It has been estimated that among people over 65 years old 80% of people suffer from at least one physical illness. Purpose: To identify the opinions of the respondents on the most common health problems of elderly over 60. Materials and methods: The study was conducted between January 2013 and November 2014 in three study groups: Polish, Belarusian and Greek students. A total of 600 (200 for each group) respondents were tested with the questionnaire created by authors. Results: Respondents indicated that the most characteristic physical features of elderly people are wrinkles (68.7%, n = 412), gray hair (54.3%, n = 326) while cardiovascular diseases are the most common health problem (76.3%, n = 458). The most significant factor in delaying the aging process was active lifestyle (85.3%, n = 512). Conclusions: There is a need for increased education in geriatrics and care of the elderly among students of health sciences, who in the future will be entered in the geriatric therapeutic teams. The perception of health problems of the elderly were different depending on the country of origin of the respondents. This may indicate that the students don’t know the basic diseases and ailments in this age group (for example geriatric giants).

Psychology of old age is a new field that attempts to explain the functioning of the psyche during the final stages of life. Psychoanalysis was initially very skeptical towards older patients, but faced with increasing number of senior adults, the fields of psychology and psychoanalysis had to adapt, searching for explanations and answers aimed at understanding human aging. The goal of geriatric psychotherapy is to assist elderly individuals in their psychological mentalization, including the mental process of mourning their "self," which goes through a difficult period of losses, so that they do not fall into psychosomatic symptoms or depression. Psychotherapy can thus support a positive sense of identity.

Aging and being old are among those phenomena which nowadays are perceived solely negatively. The image of this life stage is based mainly on stereotypes and beliefs created by and for young people, for whom youth is much more valuable. This results in social and cultural discrimination of mature people (ageism). The article, based on analysis of various texts, provides background on involvement and participation of active elderly people in society (age group of 50 years and more) and difficulties they encounter in many aspects of their life due to the negative image of aging and old age. It also points out necessary changes to the perception of this period in human life - both for individual- and society-level.
