The funeral epigraphic material of Elbląg and the surrounding area, relating to the period preceding the XVIth century, remains, first of all thanks to the researches of Polish epigraphists, relatively more explored and introduced into the scientific circulation array. At the same time the Renaissance-Baroque gravestone monument of the XVIth–XVIIth centuries, which is extremely important for the comprehensive study of the reformed Circum-Baltic, often continues to need a detailed research commentary. To the epitaph of the burgomaster of Elbing (Elbląg) Johann Jungschultz (1583–1630), as well as to the Latin text of the funeral Eulogy, associated with this epitaph, composed by the Bohemian humanist Venceslav Klemens, is expected to address in this article. The epitaph of Johann Jungschultz was established in 1630–1640. From the compositional point of view closest to the epitaph of Johann Jungschultz, and almost prototypical for it, is the epitaph of Edward Blemke (1591), in the St. Mary’s church of Gdansk. It allows to speak about the author of the epitaph of Johann Jungschultz as oriented to samples of the Dutch monumental tombstones of the end of the XVIth century, or even as belonging to the circle of Willem van den Blocke (circa 1550–1628), which was the principal mediator of the influence of the Dutch art in the South-Eastern Baltic in the end of XVIth – the first quarter of the XVIIth century. The compositional and decorative solution of the epitaph also has close matches in the works of Johann Pfister (1573 – circa 1642/1645 or 1648).

The following article examines one of the possible word formation methods – the explicit derivation in an Early New High German text. The analyzed evidences show that this language development period was decidedly decisive for the development of the modern, New High German language standard in all respects. The word formation methods used are typical of the epoch and contribute to a better understanding of this language period.
W poniższym artykule przeanalizowano jedną z możliwych metod tworzenia wyrazów – derywację w języku wczesno-nowo-wysoko-niemieckim. Analizowane przykłady wskazują, że ten okres rozwoju języka pod każdym względem miał decydujący wpływ na rozwój niemieckiego standardu językowego. Stosowane metody słowotwórcze są typowe dla epoki i przyczyniają się do lepszego zrozumienia tego okresu w historii języka niemieckiego.

Kapituła Katedralna Elbląska została utworzona 25 listopada 1992 r. Instalacja kanoników miała miejsce dopiero 25 marca 1993 r. Artukuł prezentuje ćwierćwiecze tej kapituły na tle dziejów kapituł katedralnych i kolegiackich w regionie Polski północno-wschodniej (matropolia gdańska i warmińska). Wiele miejsca poświęcono liczebności kapituł i wykształceniu kanoników.
The Cathedral Chapter in Elbląg was established on the 25th November 1992. The installation of canons did not take place until 25th March 1993. The article presents the quarter-century of this chapter against the history of cathedral and collegiate chapters in the North-Eastern Poland region (Gdańsk and the metropolis of Warmia). Much space was devoted tothe numerous chapters and to the education of canons.

From the mid-19th century there took place important changes in the German judicial system including the prison system, which was to lead to the resocialization and returning prisoners to social life. An essential element of those actions was the regular pastoral care, the introduction of full-time chaplains to prisons, teaching and religious education of juvenile criminals, the promotion of reading and the integration of former prisoners with their family and local community. All those actions were consistently introduced from the mid-19th century also in the prison of Elbląg. The article presents the complicated beginnings of the Evangelical prison ministry in Elbląg, the figures of chaplains, methods of pastoral influence and aims and the composition of Verein zur Fürsorge für entlassene Sträflinge im Elbinger Kreise set up in 1873.

Opis:
Elbląg przed drugą wojną światową był dużym miastem, z rozwiniętym przemysłem i społecznością o charakterze robotniczym. W XIX w. szybko rozwijała się dzielnica miasta Kolonią Pangritza, w której osiedlili się ubodzy przybysze z różnych stron państwa pruskiego. Kolonia przez dziesięciolecia pod względem ekonomicznym i rozwoju infrastruktury mocno odbiegała od reszty miasta. Kumulowały się też na tym terenie wszystkie niekorzystne procesy związane z XIX-wieczną klasą robotniczą tj. analfabetyzm, bezrobocie, społeczne wykluczenie, brak opieki socjalnej i medycznej a nade wszystko bieda materialna. Duże znaczenie dla rozwiązywania tych problemów miało przybycie do Kolonii Pangritza w 1887 r. Zgromadzenia Sióstr św. Katarzyny. Zakonnice do 1945 r. prowadziły w klasztorze niewielki szpital, opiekę ambulatoryjną, przedszkole oraz kursy dokształcające i szkołę gospodarstwa domowego dla kobiet. Posługa katarzynek miała duże znaczenie dla rozwoju w Elblągu nowoczesnej opieki socjalnej.
Elbląg was a large city before the Second World War, with developed industry and a working-class community. In the 19th-century, a district of the city called Pangritz Colony developed rapidly, in which poor newcomers from various parts of the Prussian state settled. For decades, the colony diverged sharply from the rest of the city in terms of economic and infrastructural development. All the unfavorable processes associated with the 19th-century working class, i.e. illiteracy, unemployment, social exclusion, lack of social and medical care and, above all, material poverty, were also accumulated in this area. The arrival of the Congregation of the Sisters of St Catherine in the Pangritz Colony in 1887 was of great importance in solving these problems. In the convent, until 1945, the nuns ran a small hospital, out-patient care, a kindergarten, and further education courses, and a domestic school for women. The ministry of the Sisters of St Catherine was of great importance for the development of modern social care in Elbląg.

U schyłku XIII w. zbudowano na północnym przedmieściu Elbląga szpital i drewnianą kaplicę pod wezwaniem św. Jerzego, którą w 1386 r. zastąpiono murowanym kościołem. Świątynia ta spłonęła doszczętnie w 1400 roku. W jej zgliszczach odnaleziono nietkniętą Hostię, co uznano za cud eucharystyczny. Odbudowany w 1405 r. kościół otrzymał wezwanie Bożego Ciała i stał się sanktuarium znanym w całych Prusach krzyżackich. Od połowy XVI w. do 1945 r. kościół Bożego Ciała był własnością elbląskich ewangelików. W jego wnętrzu zachowało się wyposażenie gotyckie i nowożytne. W związku z wkroczeniem do Elbląga Armii Czerwonej, na przełomie stycznia i lutego 1945 roku kościół został zniszczony i legł w gruzach.
At the end of the 13th century a hospital and a wooden chapel dedicated to St George were built in the northern suburb of Elbląg and replaced by a brick church in 1386. This temple burned down in 1400. In its ruins an intact Host was found, which was considered a Eucharistic miracle. Rebuilt in 1405, the church received the invocation of Corpus Christi and became a shrine known throughout Teutonic Prussia. From the middle of the 16th century until 1945, the Corpus Christi church was owned by Evangelicals from Elbląg. Inside,its Gothic and modern furnishings have been preserved. When the Red Army entered Elbląg in January/February 1945, the church was destroyed and lay in ruins.

W 1525 r. przestała istnieć diecezja pomezańska. Dalsze religijne dzieje terenu Żuław i Powiśla związane były z diecezją chełmińską, od 1821 r. z diecezją warmińską, a od 1925 r. także z diecezją gdańską. Artykuł prezentuje uwarunkowania polityczne, duszpasterskie, międzywyznaniowe, obyczajowe i ekonomiczne życia kleru katolickiego na omawianym terenie od XVI w. do zakończenia II wojny światowej.
In 1525 the Pomezanian diocese ceased to exist. Further religious history of the area of the Vistula Lowlands and Powiśle was associated with the diocese of Chelmno, since 1821 the diocese of Warmia and since 1925 also with the diocese of Gdansk. The article presents the political, pastoral, interreligious, moral and economic conditions of life of the Catholic clergy inhabiting the region from the sixteenth century to the end of World War II.

In 1939 the Soviet army occupied Wołyń, devastating there the structures of Catholic Church. A lot of priests from the sites of the pre-war diocese of Lutsk arrived to the diocese of Warmia. Between 1945 and 1987 eight from those priests were staying in Elbląg. Two of them, Wacław Hipsz and Aleksander Iwanicki had a big influence on the social-religious life in post-war Elbląg.

Der Autor präsentiert die Rolle des Diözesanarchivs in Elbląg (Elbing) für die Sicherstellung der sich im Besitz der Pfarreien der Diözese Elbląg befindlichen Archivalien, wobei er sich besonders auf die Matrikelbücher konzentriert. Diese manchmal sehr beschädigten Bücher konnten in Kooperation mit der Stiftung für Deutsch-Polnische Zusammenarbeit konserviert und im Diözesanarchiv sichergestellt werden. Es gelang (in den Jahren 2001-2002), eine beträchtliche Anzahl Bücher aus dem Zentralen Bischöflichen Archiv in Regensburg zurückzugewinnen, wohin sie während des 2. Weltkrieges aus Polen verbracht worden waren. Die Rückgabe der Bücher erfolgte dank der Zusammenarbeit der Bischofskonferenzen von Polen und Deutschland. Infolge dieser Ereignisse gelang es, im Diözesanarchiv in Elbląg 418 katholische Matrikelbücher zu versammeln. Im zweiten Teil des vorliegenden Artikels präsentiert der Autor einen Katalog dieser Bücher.

Opis:
Cyprian Norwid Library of Elbląg includes the collection of the former Elbląg City Library before 1945. Among them are 124 volumes (including 12 bound together), which were once owned by the Library of the Bernardine Monastery in Kadyny. The Bernardine Monastery in Kadyny was erected 18 August, 1683. At the beginning of the eighteenth century it became a known sanctuary of St. Anthony of Padua in the region. In 1826 the monastery was dissolved by the Prussian authorities. Before the dissolution the monastic library stored 1327 volumes. In a separate cabinet, outside the library, the Bernardines had 29 volumes of libri prohibita. In April 1830, part of the book collection of Kadyny was included in the library of the Lower Secondary School of Elblag, and then it was transformed to the Elbląg City Library. An unspecifi ed number of books from the library of the Bernardines in Kadyny, in the nineteenth century, were taken over by the Chapter of Warmia in Frombork, and currently they are stored in the Library of “Hosianum” the Seminary of the Archdiocese of Warmia in Olsztyn. Among the 124 cataloged volumes of Kadyny in the Library of Elblag, by far the most of them concern the subject of theology and asceticism. The oldest book in the analyzed collection of Kadyny is Lombardica historia by Jacob de Voragine, published in Nuremberg in 1501, the newest one is Veritas Christianae Religionis by Idzi Smukalski released in 1788 in Poznań. Overall, 31 volumes come from the sixteenth century, 54 volumes come from the seventeenth century and 39 volumes come from the eighteenth century.

In modern times, Royal Prussia used to be a multi-denominational and multicultural area. Elbląg, one of the three great Prussian cities, had a similar character until 1772. Since the middle of the 16th century, many Poles from Lithuania and the Crown, including Mazovia, came to this Lutheran town. The preserved Catholic metric books and the matricules of the academic gymnasium established in 1535 in Elbląg allow a study of the presence of the Mazovians in Elbląg in the past. In the source material, apart from the personal data, also the place of origin, age and sometimes family and social status were recorded. In total, 66 newcomers from Mazovia were registered in the archives of Elbląg. They did not play any significant role in the history of the city.

Po zakończeniu drugiej wojny światowej rozpoczął się długotrwały proces odbudowy Elbląga i konsolidacji społecznej ludności przybyłej z różnych stron Polski. Istotną rolę w tym procesie odegrał Kościół rzymskokatolicki, a konkretnie parafia staromiejska św. Mikołaja oraz elbląskie duchowieństwo. Odbudowa świątyń w Elblągu oraz organizowanie życia duszpasterskiego w mieście po 1945 r. odbywało się w warunkach narastającej wrogości i prześladowań ze strony władz komunistycznych. W tej sytuacji dwie wizyty prymasa Stefana Wyszyńskiego w powojennym Elblągu, w 1950 i 1958 r., miały olbrzymie znaczenie społeczno-religijne, patriotyczne i więzotwórcze w środowisku elbląskich katolików.
After the end of the Second World War, a long process of rebuilding Elbląg and social consolidation of the population arriving from different parts of Poland began. The Roman Catholic Church, specifically the Old Town parish of St. Nicholas and the Elblag clergy, played an important role in this process. The rebuilding of the churches in Elbląg and the organisation of pastoral life in the city after 1945 took place under conditions of increasing hostility and persecution on the part of the communist authorities. In this situation, two visits by Primate Stefan Wyszyński to post-war Elbląg, in 1950 and 1958, were of enormous social and religious significance, patriotic and bond-building among Elbląg’s Catholics.
