Opis:
Temporal variations (1994–98) in nutrient distribution were analysed in the Polish sector of the Baltic Sea with reference to long-term (1979–98) fluctuations of hydrological and chemical factors. Between 1994 and 1998 the winter accumulation of phosphate declined noticeably in most of the regions with the exception of the Gulf of Gdańsk. The winter peaks of silicate were also reduced in the offshore region and in the waters along the central Polish coast, but continued to accumulate in the bays owing to riverine input. In the offshore region a decrease in the winter accumulation of nitrate was noted in the surface water layer whereas in the bays nitrate concentrations continued to increase. Large quantities of nitrate continue to accumulate in the Gulf of Gdańsk, although at a slower rate than in 1979–93.

Opis:
Between 1600 and 1900 two numerous and ecologically important large marine mammals were extirpated in the Svalbard archipelago. These were the pelagic-feeding Greenland whale (Balaena mysticetus) and the benthic-feeding walrus (Odobaenus rosmarus rosmarus), the initial stocks of which prior to exploitation are estimated to have numbered approximately 46 000 and 25 000 animals respectively. Their annual food consumption at that time is estimated to have been some 4 million tons of plankton and 0.4 million tons of benthic organisms. Assuming that the primary and secondary production of the shelf/coastal ecosystem in the 16th century (before the peak of the Little Ice Age) was similar to that of the present day, the authors have concluded that a major shift in the food web must have occurred after the Greenland whales and walruses were eliminated. Planktonivorous seabirds and polar cod (Boreogadus saida) very probably took advantage of the extirpation of the Greenland whales, while eiders (Somateria mollissima) and bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) benefited from the walrus's extinction. In turn, the increased amount of pelagic fish provided food for piscivorous alcids and gulls, and may have given rise to the huge present-day seabird colonies on Svalbard.

The composition presents a prototype solution (system POTOK) of a complex problem such as advanced assistance for researches in hydrological terms of forest areas. The idea of this system was based on a junction of two technologies: relational database and digital projection of space. The database is a ground of application that allowed creating ad hoc queries accomplished by advanced processing and also gives wide prospects of visualising the results (in 3D). The system could be used in related branches of science.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to analyse the acidity and buffer abilities of selected soils occurring within terrestrial (forest, arable and meadow) ecosystems, under specific form of protection within the Lasy Janowskie Landscape Park. The results of the study indicate that the very acid and acid reaction of the soil environment is the result of natural processes, such as relations between mother rock and plant cover (low pH, high value of hydrolytic and exchangeable acidity, and high content of mobile aluminum), and low degree of saturation of the sorption complex with bases. The greatest buffering abilities showed typic gley soil (Dystric Gleysol), peat soil (Terric Histosol), and accumulation horizons of other soil types.

Opis:
The research was conducted in 1991-1997 on the soils from arable fields situated near Łódź. To the detailed research there were stated four soil profiles which were different as regards their grain composition (two sand and two silt soils, all shallow) and typology (two profiles of brown leached soils, one pseudopodzolic-gley soil and one fallow glossic grey-brown podzolic soil). Qualification of the directions of the alterations in the content of organic carbon and basic macroelements (P, K, Mg) in soil and hesitation of reaction, hydrolytic acidity and content of the exchangeable basic cations in the soil sorptive complex were the main target of our research. The result of the 7-year-long research showed that different changes took place in the features of the examined soils. However, the exact assignment of the direction of these alteractions is extremely complex and does not warrant getting a satisfying answer. It is the result of taking various agriculture actions which are necessary to the appropriate maintenance of the ecosystems.

Opis:
On the basis of results obtained in 2 static experiments conducted on light and heavy soils with differentiated mineral fertilisation, an approximate balance of Cd, Ni and Pb was determined over 20 years of investigations. The experiments included 3 levels of fertilisers and the control plot. Ammonium nitrate, single or triple superhosphate and potassium salt were used for the treatments. Average amounts ofheavy metals introduced with the fertilisers in both experiments over twenty years were as follows: 37-110 g Cd, 63-195 g Ni and 62-202 g Pb ha-1. The balance ofheavy metals over twenty years assumed different values depending on the fertilisation level and soil conditions. However, irrespective of those factors, the balance assumes a negative value. The effect of nitrogen doses on the balance was slight and depended on the site trophicity. On the other hand, increasing doses of phosphorus and potassium treatment decreased the value of the negative balance difference of cadmium and, to a lesser degree, of nickel, but increased the lead balance.

This study was based on tuber samples from the field experiment in 1996-1998 on weak loamy sand soil in a system of randomised sub-blocks. The experimental factors were: ways of nursery and varieties (Swojecka, Kulista Czerwona IHAR, Kulista Biała IHAR). Herbicide application elevated both cadmium and nickel contents in Helianthus tubers as compared to control. Tubers of Swojecka Czerwona cv. were characterised by the lowest accumulation of cadmium and nickel, those of Kulista Czerwona IHAR cv. by the highest content of nickel, and those of Kulista Biała IHAR by the highest level of cadmium.
