    Der Band enthält die Abstracts ausschließlich in englischer Sprache.
    In the mid- eighties, a number of contemporary French writers tried to renew the genre of French novel by a polyvalent stylistic revival. The critics had condemned the novel to death since it was drowned in theories and did not bring something new. The new generation put the emphasis on writing and ignored all other the theory- based approaches. Clearly, the critic started identifying the new phenomena and finally came up with the “minimalist” etiquette for writers of this clan. The novels of Jean Echenoz and Jean-Philippe Toussaint are remarkable examples of this literary movement since they draw all aspects of minimalist art in I’m Off (Je m’en vais) and Running away (Fuir). In this paper we will try to study the resemblances and the differences between minimalism and the important literary movement of the 19th century, realism. We will also spotlight the traces of realism in contemporary writings to point out the maintenance or the rejection of its components in new literary texts.

    Opis:
    Un an and Je m’en vais by Jean Echenoz, two seemingly independent novels, constitute in fact an instance of transfiction, or rather a novelistic diptych, subtly embedded in the common fictional universe by means of various textual elements such as characters, setting and diegetic analogies. Its aim is not only the unusual extension and expansion of the original fiction, based on ambiguous narration, full of understatements and contradictions, which suggests rather than tells a story in a classic way. Both texts show many extended thematic similarities, which further emphasize their structural complementarity and give it a deeper meaning. Referring to selected theories of transfiction, this article explores the way in which Echenoz plays with the conventions of serial literature and uses them to show in two versions the vicissitudes of human affairs.

    The novels of Jean Echenoz are particularly known for their playfulness with which they deconstruct the codes of the paraliterary genres, as well as for a casualness with which they approach the topos of the modernist novel. The production of this author of the last two decades nevertheless testifies of a new direction that slips in the biographical. Like many writers of his generation, Jean Echenoz deals in Jérôme Lindon (2001), Ravel (2006), Courir (2008) and Des éclairs (2010) with the lives of illustrious personalities of our era. We can wonder what the objective of this approach of a writer, who shows his admiration with regard to his characters, is. Is it a simple tribute or need to fill out gaps in history that we will never complete for lack of evidence to support? This paper also tries to deal with the problem of the genre of these texts that lie at the edge between fiction and factual literature.
    Powieści Jeana Echenoza słyną z ludycznego dekonstruowania kodów gatunków paraliterackich oraz ze swobody, z jaką autor traktuje topos powieści modernistycznej. Tymczasem twórczość pisarza z ostatnich dwóch dziesięcioleci świadczy o przesuwaniu się w nowym kierunku – w stronę biografizmu. W tekstach Jérôme Lindon (2001), Ravel (2006), Długodystansowiec (2008) i Błyskawice (2010), jak wielu innych pisarzy jego pokolenia, Echenoz pochyla się nad życiem słynnych postaci naszych czasów. Nasuwa się pytanie, jaki jest cel pisarza, który okazuje swoim postaciom podziw. Chodzi po prostu o złożenie hołdu czy też o wypełnianie białych plam historii, których nigdy nie zapełnimy z braku dostępnej wiedzy? Niniejszy artykuł porusza także kwestię cech gatunkowych tych tekstów, sytuujących się pomiędzy fikcją i literaturą faktu.

    Der Band enthält die Abstracts ausschließlich in englischer Sprache
    14 is a recently published novel by a French contemporary writer, Jean Echenoz. Having the First World War as its core subject, the text covers the main traditional themes of war novels. Its interest, however, does not lie in what it says about the war, but rather in how the war is told. In fact, 14 points out the main horrors of the war, without engaging in pathos. In order to do so, Echenoz resorts to two groups of techniques, whose main purpose is to lighten the dramatic effect of the war scenes depicted. Surprisingly, the result is a text which recounts the crude horrors of war.
