Macedonian drama
Goran Stefanovski
East–West
Opis:
Europe on the contemporary Macedonian dramatic stage As part of the topic I decided to speak about the dramatic opus of Goran Stefanovski, mostly for three chief reasons which are elaborated in the paper:1. The thematic constant of his dramatic worldview is to represent Macedonia (namely, the Balkans and its Slavic population) against the ‘big, white western world’ of Europe and the US. This East-West imagological conditionality and juxtaposition of meanings inside Stefanovski’s dramatic worlds provides the basis for the dramatic conflicts in his plays, including those written during the socialist period of his upbringing (Wild Flesh, Tattooed Souls), when Stefanovski resides in Skopje (Macedonia), and writes in Macedonian, and those written after the break-up of the SFRY (Casabalkan, Euroalien, Hotel Europa), when Stefanovski lives and works in Canterbury (England), and writes in English.2. The imagological thematic constant which runs through the European East vs. West in Stefanovski’s opus is something his writing shares with the thematic preoccupations of other contemporary Macedonian dramatists (such as Jordan Plevnesh, Venko Andonovski, Dejan Dukovski). With that, the plays of Andonovski and Dukovski evidently reference scenes from Stefanovski’s works. Along those lines, it’s safe to say that Stefanovski is the paradigmatic (emblematic) Macedonian playwrighter.3. The play-script for Stefanovski’s theatre productions written during the past decade and a half, as integral parts of international theatre projects and productions, have received a wider international acclaim and visibility by the European theatre audiences. His dramatic works allow for the voice(s) of the other, the silenced Europe, to resonate at the center of the European cultural capitals. With that, the interculturality of these theatre projects (performed at all levels of the production), allows for the articulation of the mutual demonization that generates the imagological, ideological and geopolitical difference which exists between Europe and the Balkans.

Published geochronological data, petrology, geochemistry and geological context of orthogneisses in the Strzelin and the Stachów complexes (NE-part of the Fore-Sudetic Block), together with structural observations help to locate the northern extension of the boundary between the East and West Sudetes within the poorly exposed NE margin of the Bohemian Massif. The Strzelin complex, in the east, comprises the Strzelin gneiss, with zircon ages of 600š7 and 568š7Ma, and the Nowolesie gneiss with a mean zircon age of 1020_ 1Ma. The Stachów complex to the west, which forms several tectonic klippen in the Strzelin Massif and in the Lipowe Hills Massif, contains the Gościęcice gneiss and pale Stachów gneiss, both yielding Late Cambrian zircon ages (~500š5 Ma). The orthogneisses in both complexes correspond to peraluminous S-type granites, but have different inherited zircon ages and display contrasting trace element characteristics, indicating different sources and petrogenetic histories. Based on the ages, petrology and overall geological context, the Strzelin orthogneiss is similar to the Keprník orthogneiss of the East Sudetes, whereas the orthogneisses of the Stachów complex correspond to rocks known from theWest Sudetes (e.g. the Izera and Śnieżnik orthogneisses). The Stachów and the Strzelin complexes are separated by the Strzelin Thrust, which may be interpreted as the northern extension of the boundary between the East and West Sudetes, i.e. part of the boundary between the Brunovistulian and Moldanubian terranes of the NE part of the Bohemian Massif.

Opis:
Bulgarian migration to the UK has gradually increased since the country’s EU accession and the removal of barriers to free movement of labour across the EU. The sustained popularity of the UK amongst those dreaming for a fresh start through migration, despite the hostility faced by Bulgarian immigrants, poses a paradox that cannot be explained with the ‘push–pull’ and cost–benefit calculation models prevailing in migration research. This article proposes a more balanced understanding of migration motivations on the basis of would-be migrants’ own perceptions. Drawing on biographical interviews with self-ascribed ‘ordinary people’ with long-term plans for settling in the UK, I shed light on individuals’ imaginings and expectations of life after migration. Firstly, I analyse the notion of ‘survival’ through which my informants articulated frustrations with their precarious financial situation, their inferior social and symbolic positioning within society and their inability to partake in forms of consumption and lifestyle that would allow them to experience a sense of social advancement. I then explore would-be migrants’ imaginings of life in the UK (and ‘the West’) which depict an idealised ‘normality’ of life, in which they conveyed longings for security and predictability of life, social justice and working-class dignity and respectability. These insights into people’s disappointment, desperation and disillusionment with a precarious present help us to understand the continuous construction of an ‘imaginary West’ as an ideal ‘elsewhere’, in the search of which migrants are ready to undergo hardship and stigmatisation. By engaging with the existing debates in migration studies and literature on Bulgarian migration, this article exposes the deficiencies of economic reductionism, which presents migration decision-making as a conscious, rational and calculative act and, instead, demonstrates that, very often, people are led by dreams and idealisations that are reflective of their emotions and life-worlds.

Opis:
This article explores the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) migrants from Central and Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union in Scotland. Drawing on interviews with 50 migrants, the article focuses on the experiences and aspirations which they articulate as being part of ‘a normal life’, and analyses them within broader conceptual understandings of security and ‘normality’. We first examine how normality is equated with an improved economic position in Scotland, and look at the ways in which this engenders feelings of emotional security and well-being. We then explore how more positive experiences around sexuality and gender identity are key to a sense of emotional security – i.e. of feeling accepted as ‘normal’, being visible as an LGBT person but ‘blending in’ rather than standing out because of it. Finally we look at the ways in which the institutional framework in Scotland, in particular the presence of LGBT-affirmative legislation, is seen by participants to have a normalising effect within society, leading to a broader sense of inclusion and equality – found, again, to directly impact upon participants’ own feelings of security and emotional well-being. The article engages with literatures on migration and sexuality and provides an original contribution to both: through its focus upon sexuality, which remains unexplored in debates on ‘normality’ and migration in the UK; and by bringing a migration perspective to the debates in sexuality studies around the normalising effect of the law across Europe. By bringing these two perspectives together, we reveal the inter-relationship between sexuality and other key spheres of our participants’ lives in order to better understand their experiences of migration and settlement.

Opis:
Since the fall of the Iron Curtain 25 years ago, the asymmetric Central European labour market that was cut off by different legal systems gradually disappeared and has now been replaced by a unified migration space, where the costs for migration or pendular mobility and the wage gain which migrants can achieve are the decisive factors in the decision of whether to migrate or not. Official statistics show that, over the past ten years, migration from the new member-states of 2004 and 2007 to the EU15 in general and to Austria – a country directly bordering many of the new EU member-states – in particular, has significantly gained in importance. This new East-West migration is characterised by high qualification, a concentration on employment-relevant age groups and high spatial flexibility. Migrants are moving if wage differentials are significant and employment opportunities are given and they return or move further away if the labour market loses its attractiveness. The new East-West migration can provide gains for the target regions, for the regions of departure and for the migrants themselves.

Great East-West Schism
Opis:
This article above could be called as a supplement to the History of the Church – it has been written not to present in a narrative way the common-known course of the East-West Schism which began in the 11th century, but to give some remarks and to present some little known details, which could be helped to create a new dimension of reflexion, and even of discussion on problems included in this article. The event of the 1054th in modern historiography are treated as absolutely end of the “Church unity indivisibility period”. This point of view does not divide the Author of this article, so he decided to present a new- quality-reflexion, thanks of it the described events could be recognized as the consequence of earlier revealing trends. The Author also shows, that the Church unity is not so clear, because in the Church History you can meet some separatist tendencies. It is but very important, that no one of them could foil the principal ecclesiastical hallmark, the Unity. This Unity could situate the reality of Church in the God’s Plan of Salvation, making it independent from human decisions, disagreement cases or arrogance. The unity reflexion based both on the biblical and patristic analysis, permit us in new way treat the events of 1054th. Their “schismatic” character, especially in context of the patristic texts seems to by rather a heated discussion, in which both interested parts desire in cooperation to respond their epoch challenge. It was, after all, the great epoch of the Gregorian Roman Catholicism reform and of “theological Byzantine golden age”. So it should be better, when we treat the Schism simple as a division, and in the rough Hierarchy’s declarations we find signs of Church responsibility. This way of thinking is justified by creating Normans’ power and increasing problems with Caesaropapism tendencies. The conclusion of this article is clear: in consequence of the 1054th events “Byzantine Golden age” was about to be broken, but the Church Unity remained untouched…

The article discusses main discourses and theoretical approaches towards the phenomenon of modernity in East Asia. The main discourses are identified as: Westernization/ Americanization approach, multiple modernity discourses and the theories of hybridization. The article analyzes main foundations, key premises and functions of the above mentioned discourses within the Asian and non-Asian contexts. Its also traces down advantages, flaws and implications of those discourses with reference to such notions as globalization, West, Asia, culture(s), tradition. The author concludes that rejection of the West/East and tradition/modernity stereotypical divide in the name of a non-essential, multi-casual approach represented by some of the multiple modernity and hybridization theories, may more adequately describe today's Asia and also, possibly, Asia in the future, than the discourses based on such a dualistic divisions.

Research has given increasing recognition to the important role that children play in family decisions to migrate and the significant impact of migration on family relationships. At the same time, the role of emotional labour involved in feeling ‘at home’ and the sense of ontological security and everyday belonging that families develop post-migration can benefit from further exploration. Drawing on data collected with Eastern European migrant families in Scotland, this article explores intergenerational understandings of (in)securities by comparing parents’ and children’s views on their lives post-migration. It shows that, while adults constructed family security around notions of stable employment and potential for a better future, children reflected more on the emotional and ontological insecurities which families experienced. Family relationships are often destabilised by migration, which can lead to long-term or permanent insecurities such as family disintegration and the loss of a sense of recognition and belonging. The article reflects on the ways in which insecurities of the past are transformed, but are unlikely to be resolved, by migration to a new country. It does this by grounding the analysis in young people’s own understandings of security and by examining how their narratives challenge idealised adult expectations of family security and stability post-migration. It also shows that young people’s involvement in migration research brings an important perspective to the family dynamics post-migration, challenging adult-centred constructs.

The article presents various opinions and assessments of Polish society regarding membership in the European Union and its consequences. 2014 marks 10 years since countries from Central-Eastern Europe became a part of the European Union. It is a good opportunity for an afterthought on the role and place of the post-communist countries in today’s world order. The author of the article suggests that perspectives of post-colonial theories or the system-world dependence theory can be a useful tool to help understand the state of affairs in the region. It is also indicated by the research studies which demonstrate that the respondents notice a gap between Poland and the standards of Western European countries in all aspects of their lives. It does not only refer to the social sphere, but also to assess the institutional order or civic self-awareness. In spite of dif culties and crises in such countries as Greece or Portugal within the European Union, Polish society – as shown by the results of the author’s research studies – perceives further European integration to be a solution to its own problems.

The demise of central planning in the former East bloc is a frequent topic of economic and political analyses. Kaliński’s article describes changes in the centrally planned economies of former Soviet satellite states in the context of market trends in capitalist economies. The analysis covers a period from the emergence of the Soviet Union until its breakup. The statistical analysis is accompanied by a discussion of the political and social environment of the time. The author notes that, in the initial period, there was no link between global business cycles and economic growth in the Soviet Union and other Soviet bloc countries. This was due to major political and economic differences and the far-reaching isolation of the region’s centrally planned economies, especially during the Cold War period. The partial opening of Central and Eastern Europe to commercial and financial cooperation with the West in the 1970s led a convergence between the capitalist and centrally planned systems. Negative trends in the global economy, including energy crises and growing indebtedness, had a strong impact on what happened in the Soviet bloc. This situation, coupled with the inefficiency and poor competitiveness of the centrally planned economy and its inability to meet consumer demand, became a significant factor behind the collapse of the system across Central and Eastern Europe, the author concludes.

The authors have conducted state-of-the-art literature review and field surveys for this project. The current research reports the state-of-the-art of rail freight services along the RETRACK corridor in the areas of transhipment technology and systems, information and communication systems, safety and security of cargo, rolling stock and locomotives, human resources, legislative and regulatory status, and command and control systems. The research finds that all of national networks vary in terms of capabilities, competence and capacities in these areas and that the demonstration of a commercial rail freight service on the corridor will be feasible, competitive, and environmental friendly and will help achieving the long-aspired European Commission's (EC) transport policy of modal shift.

Opis:
Values are present not only in law and politics, but also in respective branches of scholarship. Interestingly, already in antiquity even parts of world were con- sidered as value-laden. Already by then, prevailed the bad opinion about the East, represented by Byzantium. As from the ruins of the Western Roman Empire the Europe of Charlemagne emerged, beyond its eastern border a “new” Europe appeared which inherited all the negative features of the East, first of all the economic, moral and legal backwardness. It is the West of Europe, where west- ern civilization and western legal tradition come from. They were assimilated by Poland through its Christianization in the 10 thcentury and through German colonization in the 12–13 thcentury. Poland became in this way a kind of “East of the West”, but the German “bearer of culture” was considered in Eastern Europe directly an advocate of the Occident. Only in two isolated cases Poland overtook Western Europe: the dispute of Paulus Vladimiri against the Teutonic Knights at the council of Constance (1414–1418) and the promulgation of the May constitu- tion in 1791. However, in most cases also within the borders of Europe the West revealed itself unable to learn from the rest.
